captions by: caption colorado, llc (800) 775-7838 e- mail: we're digging out. >> the cleanup begins after a another winter storm hits maryland. hello again. i'm don scott. >> i'm jessica kartalija. >> several inches fell across the state causing several school systems to close, others just to open late. anne arundel county students have the day off. this morning, some were out helping their neighbors shovel. people had to take extra time to clear snow off the cars before heading to work. let's take a live look outside right now from sky eye chopper 13 up over bel air and harford county.

the roads are clear. the state highway administration is warning drivers to be cautious out there in the sunshine. and we are live with first warning weather coverage. ron matz is updating conditions on the roads. first bernadette woods and tim williams are tracking the snowfall totals and updating the forecast. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. the woord we've been using is a mablable snowstorm. we're able to tell you and equip everyone. the snowstorm has moved out. we're setting our sights on what's ahead. satellite radar composite, we'll give you an idea of what is moving on. we are looking at snow and rain to our south starting to move on out of here by this morning around 3:30 or so. you are left with the clouds and totals. the totals for us, these are some of the totals around the area. some of the highest toward clarksburg 6 inches. edgewood 5 inches of snow. columbia at 4.3. we did see baltimore city reported 4 inches in pikesville

and baltimore county at 3 inches of snow. 4.9 the official total. westminster, beltsville and craw all downward from 3 inches. we are now looking at this melting down and moving on out. we're now setting our sites on what is coming in our direction. for a little more on what's happening, we send it outside to bernadette woods. we talked about the 4.9 at bwi, putting us almost smack in the record books again. >> with that added to our season total, we are now 13th place for snowiest snowfall season. we're creeping up that list right now, and this weekend could add to that. i want to show you down to the southwest, the next storm's already taking shape, bringing a lot of rain to texas. that storm will track across the south and then move in our direction. for us, we think it could be a sleet/snow combo in the beginning and southern parts of

the region, more of a rain mix. so we could see a little bit of everything at the beginning of the storm then changing over to snow. it could be a significant snowfall accumulation starting friday continuing into saturday. now, as far as the numbers go, i want to show you the timing here with this storm because it is going to creep our way during the day friday, moving in probably during the evening hours, then continuing right through the day on saturday. the details of the storm still a little sketchy, but we'll keep you up to date on this and it looks like a significant snowfall accumulation. we'll have that coming up shortly in the forecast. >> bern, thank you. first warning weather coverage continues with ron matz in mother baltimore. good afternoon, ron. >> reporter: good afternoon. we're just off falls road. the sun is shining and the snow is melting after another dose of baltimore's winter of 2010. the plows. the salt.

the shovels. familiar scenes of the winter of our discontent, but this one came and left right on schedule. from york road in towson to boston street in canton, an easy morning ride. >> okay. i came up from the city. so it's been absolutely fine. the roads were fine. i came up 83. >> well, i drive for a living. there's nothing about it. the roads are clear. the side streets are damp. it's all right so far. doctor so far, you may call at the time dog days of winter. tucker talked about his drive. >> picked the trailer up and headed down to petersburg, virginia. >> reporter: how far of of a ride is that? >> about three and a half hours. today probably about four, four and a half. >> reporter: the city is already preparing for a possible bigger storm this weekend. >> our crews are getting ready. we're getting our equipment replenished, salt replenished. of course we want all of our employees to get some rest

resign. this is video from her final board meeting this morning. her resignation is part of a plea deal to allow her to expunge her record and keep her annual city pension in exchange for leaving office. the mayor was found guilty of embezzlement in december and last month pleaded guilty to perjury. >> i move on, and i believe that the city is in a good place to make tremendous growth and progress for the future. thank pup [ applause ] -- thank you. driving them immediately. joe brown reports on the announcement. >> reporter: toyota's troubles just got worse. the transportation secretary says toyota's plans for fixing sticky gas pedals may not be enough to stop the sudden acceleration in its vehicles. testifying here at the capital, transportation secretary ray lahood delivered an urgent message to drivers. stop driving now. >> my advice is if anyone owns one of these vehicles, stop driving it, tyke take it to the toyota dealers because they believe they have the fix for it. we need to fix the problem so people don't have to werery about disengaging it. >> reporter: lahood says they are investigating to see if toyota's electronics systems are safe. more than 2 million vehicles have been recalled in the u.s. alone. there's another headache around the bend. drivers of the popular prius are now reporting problems with their brakes. lahood says he's calling

toyota's president personally to talk about his concerns. joel brown, cbs news, washington. . >> according to the national highway traffic safety administration, there are more than 100 complaints involving the prius model, two involved crashes involving injuries. and an investigation following a home invasion in anne arundel county in the 500 block of williamsburg lane in odenton around 9:00 last night. two people were hurt and taken to shock trauma for treatment. it's not known how badly they are injured. police ask you to call if you have any information. maryland's law that bans driving while texting may go one step further. it's currently illegal to write or send a text while driving. james malone wants to make it illegal to read text messages while behind the wheel. violators face fines up to $500. and still to come on wjz's "eyewitness news" at noon, pending charges involving

the nation's intelligence director is warning that an attempted terror attack is certain within the next three to six months. intelligence officials believe al qaeda is deploying agents inside the united states ready to launch new attacks from within our borders. cia director leon panetta says he believes the terrorist group will carry out smaller attacks that require little training. charges could come as soon as today against michael jackson's physician. prosecutors say dr. conrad murray administered the powerful anesthetic propofol and two other sedatives the day jackson died. a law enforcement official says prosecutors will charge the physician with involuntary manslaughter rather than seeking an indictment by grand jury. his lawyer says the doctor is ready to turn himself in. the hubble telescope

let the sun shine. >> let it shine. it stays around for a while. we seem to be on this pattern of all of the storms happening on the weekend. i don't think the weather will disappoint this week. we're looking again at another system moving in and explain why we're kind of not giving big numbers just yet. let's talk about your numbers

right now. first warning weather is showing you the temperature at bwi marshal. 36 right now at the airport. 30 now that i'm over herep. relative humidity at 98%. winds from the west at 6 miles per hour. the barometer reading across the state, temperatures are in the 30s well enough above freezing that we're going to melt down much of what did start to fall and what did fall last night. 28 in oakland. 38 in ocean city. around the immediate metro area, everyone above freezing that with the help of the sun and treated roads. we'll not have many problems early on. if you have sidewalks that have not been treated, you'll want to treat them before the temperatures drop after sundown and get down below freezing again. winds are coming in from the west primarily. that's going to be a drying wind. the westerly wind will also keep us moderate today and tomorrow with temperatures around 40 degrees. our average this time of year is right around 41. the system that moved through

last night and into this morning is moving out of here now. breaks through the clouds, a, a lot of sunshine. look at the entire cloud deck here money this is a large storm that's bringing in tropical moisture. then it will start tracking acotion the gulf of mexico. two separate areas of moisture feeding that storm. tropical first from the pacific, across the gulf and then our thought is that it will start to make its run toward the eastern seaboard then make its way across right on up and down really the northeast. it could be a bona fide nor'easter. a lot of moisture with the system. as high pressure moves on out, it will allow for the storm to move in. we'll continue to watch that as it gets closer here tomorrow. we're looking at a very nice day and the storm approaching coming in on friday afternoon. 29 right now is our daytime

in today's wjz healthwatch, new research shows nearly half of all cancers could be prevented. kellye lynn joins us with more. hello. >> hi. this is encouraging, isn't it? the first thing that comes to mind is lung cancer. this new report shows that 40% of all cancers worldwide could be avoided if people would just protect themselves against infection and change their lifestyle. researchers say that health officials need to make better use of cancer-preventing vaccines like the cervical cancer vaccine and liver cancer. this report lists nine infections. the nicotine patch will work better when used longer. smokers who wore the patch for six months instead of the recommended two were more likely to quit. it lasts oak as long as the treatment. so smokers may need longer term or even ongoing treatment to kick the habit for good.
