south. that rain is going to translate into heavy snow by the time it moves north into our region. because we'll have enough cold air in our region for that to be in the form of heavy snow. because of that, we have winter storm warnings in effect beginning tomorrow all the way through saturday afternoon. the entire region, even has winter warnings because of strong winds snowing and whipping wind. any where from 1/16 to 2 feet or more. we'll be back with a lot more on this storm in just a few minutes. >> our first weather coverage in canton, kelly mcpherson has more with preparations on the way. >> reporter: we just heard from southwest airline, they've cancelled all of their lights

on saturday on vwi and some of their afternoon flights as well. here in canton, this is the epicenter to make sure they are stalled for all of maryland and beyond. salt trucks take over a portion of baltimore as worry of ice increase. >> everybody is scared they are going to run out of salt. >> reporter: all of these trucked lined up for hours to get to this salt. they will fill up and take their salt to some where in the region. >> i'm talking my to sprawls point. >> and then what? >> we'll be here all night. trying to get them ready. >> reporter: homeowners are waiting in line for their own supply. >> i live north west baltimore. and they had two hits, and i came down here. >> and you got one of them. >> i got one. >> reporter: tell me what all you purchased here.

their cars on roads that are snowplowed. >> and for the latest on closings and delays go to wjz.com. we are following breaking news, a shoot out in baltimore leaves a police officer and a suspect injured and a second suspect dead. wjz is live in shock trauma where the suspect was taken. >> reporter: a baltimore city police detective is shot, a suspect is dead. and a new mayor who took her oath of office today handles her first police emergency. >> the baltimore city police department was shot twice in the right arm in the 3700 block of oakmont avenue. where it intersects with white road in northwest baltimore. who departments were responding to a report of an armed suspect

in the area. the detectives made their approach, as they came around the corner to the house, the suspect at least one suspect immediately opened fire with a handgun. >> reporter: police say two days prior to the detective being shot, there was a nonfatal drug involved shooting in the area. the detective who was hit thursday returned fire. police say his partner then engaged with a gunfire with another suspect. >> we know one suspect succumb to his wounds at the scene. the second suspect is in critical condition. >> reporter: the officer served four years in the united states marines, with one tour in iraq.

the new mayor was on the job only a few hours, he rushed to the hospital to thank him for his service. >> i was so happy that he was alert, and things could have been so much worse. >> reporter: the detective's surgeon said those bullets missed mayor arteries. he believes the detective will probably need some repair surgery and also some rehabilitation after this. but he expect it is detective to have full use of his arm. he will be released tomorrow. we will not know the name of that detective until 48 hours from now in accordance with

baltimore police tactics. this time in howard county, a person was struck and killed by a train near the main street crossing. the csx train was traveling from baltimore to cumberland at the time. stephanie rawling drake is a very busy woman just hours after becoming the new mayor. the new mayor spoke about moving forward. mary bubala has complete coverage from city hall. >> mayor, may i be the first to congratulate you. >> reporter: at 12:15 this afternoon, stephanie rawlings blake become the 31st mayor. she signed her name under disgraced mayor sheila dixon. >> none of us asked for this moment. but all of us must accept the challenges and hard work that

come with it. >> reporter: moments after the new mayor's comments, the transfer of power could be felt and seen inside city hall. the official city seal with dixon's name taken down, replaced with one bearing our new mayor's name. rawlings blake admits that the office she's filling needs to regain the trust of the community. after tending to her aunt who had fainted during the ceremony. mayor rawlings-blake went right to work. she says boosting public education is one of her top priorities. >> i want to see the progress, i wanted to see how they were using technology to assist learning. it's an important first stop. >> reporter: has it sunken in yet? what if i call you mayor rawlings-blake, will that help?

>> it's sunken in. once you sign that big book, that's when it becomes real. >> the wheels of this city keep turning and the way they are turning right now i think is well for us. i think people are focused on the job at hand. >> reporter: during the cabinet meeting, the first potential crisis for this administration was discussed. that is the big snow headed our way and how it will be handled. i'm mary bubala, wjz news. dixon was in court resigning her position. during the hearing, judge sweeney told the court, dixon leaves the office in total disgrace. today's hearing was a formality, since the judgment was arrived to last month. she is required to donate $45,000 to the city.

stay with wjz for the city hall transition. an 11-year-old girl tells police that a teacher physically pushed her from inside the classroom into a hall way. she is identified as tracy clay. she is charged with second degree assault and placed on administrative leave. stocks took a dive amidst new fears of the world economy. stocks buckled after disappointing jobless numbers indicating the economy is weaker than expected. at one point the dow dipped below 1,000 for the first time in the month. the s & p slipped 30 points and the nasdaq dropped close to 66 points. new problems tonight for toyota. the world's largest auto maker

it is 30 degrees and cloudy in maryland. the first ten americans are in custody in haiti and charged tonight with child kidnapping. they are members of a missionary group that were trying to take 33 children to an orphanage in the neighboring dominican republic. each kidnapping count carries a sentence of five to 10 years in prison. a judge will consider the evidence and render a verdict. this may include sending the americans home for prosecution.

republican brown is now the gop's 44th senator. that means the democrats no longer enjoy a supermajority and can now have any of their initiatives blocked. brown was the winner to fill the seat of the late ted kennedy. an alabama man faces attempted murder charges for the actions behind the wheel. they say he was angry for having to prepay for his gas. the surveillance video showed mays trying to flee the scene. but officers were able to subdue him with a stun gun. a group of neighbors are upset that their neighbor was holding sex parties in his home. that constitutes a business enterprise in a residential

preliminary, we're looking at any where from 16 to as many as 24-inches across much of if north. some of the mountains could see 24-inches of snow with this. this is a major perhaps even a record breaking snowstorm. just to our south, denise we're talking still eight to 16, some places there could get 18 to 20. east of that, mixed precipitation along the beaches. it all depends if there's any sleet mixed in. the speed of the storm right now looks like it's going to break out between 9:00 and noon tomorrow. it will probably last until 3:00 to 6:00 in the afternoon tomorrow. we're talking about a big big storm. 30 here, to our north 35, 28, 34 in dc. around the baltimore metro, upper 20s to the low 30s right

now. very conducive to snow. here's the storm, a lot of rain with this. i mean tons of rain, when that translates into snow, we're talking heavy snowfall amounts. the main reason is, the low pressure that's developing here is going to make a b line for the carolina coast. this is going to become a major nor'easter. which means the winds start coming around the north and east. they bring in cold air from the north. it's only a matter of time before things moisten up. and we start seeing snow in the baltimore, washington area. it will move offshore by late saturday. sunday, yes, super bowl sunday we'll have sunshine. it'll be chilly and breezy. we will even have blizzard mornings in new jersey and coastal areas. we may even see white outs tomorrow mortgage. morning -- tomorrow morning. that's the worse part.
