for the hawaiian islands. good evening and thanks for joining us. i'm adam may and at this hour as many as 300 people are believed dead in chile. the full extent of the damage remains unclear at this point from the 8.8 magnitude earthquake. >> rescue crews are working feverishly to free the trapped, the injured are gathering outside of hospitals after one of the biggest earthquakes ever recorded rocks central chile. in the capital of santiago, cars were tossed by the force, thousands of homes leveled. stunned residents outside of damaged buildings. >> it was absolutely frightening. i really thought it was the end of the world. >> the 8.8 earthquake caught on this surveillance camera struck in the early morning hours just outside of chile's second largest city, concepcion. president obama is in contact with the chillane government. >> i have reached tout to

president bachelet, to let her know that we will be there for her, should the chilean people need assistance. >> earthquake triggered systems, some aimed at the hawaiian i'lls. hawaiian officials sounded sirens. the deadliest hawaiian tsunami back in 1946 was triggered by an 8.6 earthquake centered near alaska. >> i think people are very astute and careful now and i don't think people are afraid. i think they pay attention to the rules. >> reporter: many residents and tourists watched the waves roll in from high above safe hillsides, a close call according to scientists s at center. >>. meanwhile back here in

maryland tonight a deadly plane crash near lee airport in edgewater. it happened just feet away from two houses. wjz live on this story and we have more on the investigation. >> reporter: this was so massive that eyewitnesses could see large plumes of black smoke from miles away, but now officials have no idea why it happened. a single-engine plane shaters into pieces in edgewater. the pilot is killed. >> a heard a large crash like, a big boat hitting the water from 20 feet. >> reporter: the aircraft landed three or four feet away from this man's rental property. his own house is next door. >> i called 911 immediately. >> reporter: investigators say it first crashed into a set of trees up and caught fire around 4:30 saturday afternoon. the plane just missed the creek. >> there was a sheen of oil on the water. >> i turned the water on and

actually the next door neighbor helped me put out of the fire. i was concerned, because i was afraid the fire was going to ignite the house. >> reporter: amazingly the on damage was to the vinyl siding that melted slightly. mayo and his tenant were uninjured despite the damage to the plane. it was registered to joseph kelly of an indianapolis, of annapolis. mayo says he has seen it happen one too many times. >> this is the third time since i have been here. >> reporter: in 2006 two fatal accidents happened near the airport, the details chillingly similar to saturday's crash. in both cases a single-engine plane hit trees near the runway while trying to land. >> it's a sad situation, especially when the police said he is dead.

it's sad. it happens. >> reporter: federal and state aviation investigators are still trying to fin mip down the cause, but at this point they think weather was not a factor, because it was a clear afternoon. reporting live tonight, weijia jiang, wjz news. thank you sox. another man dead and another in shock trauma after their suv landed on train tracks around 6:30 this morning. police say the driver swerved and lost control. the vehicle then plunged 30 to 40 feet off the overpass onto the mark's train tracks below. anne arundel county police say weather may have been a factor in the crash, since the roads were still wet from the snowfall. there is another twist in a little girl abandoned at a gas station. now tonight her father, 25-year- old dwayne jackson is charged

with killing a woman believed to be that girl's mother. the woman's burning body was found in a park in new york. police larged jackson with child endangerment and he is held on $2 million bail tonight. winter storms bringing wind to the baltimore area. western maryland was hit very hard. the national guard was sent where authorities declared a state of emergency. vehicles will be used to help emergency crews get through the snow. in baltimore a cloudy night in charm city and believe it or not we have got even more snow in the forecast. request we get a break here? wjz has first warning coverage

bernadette woods. >> 43.7" snow alone. oakland about 3-feet of snow, and some of the projections are keeping it open until april with all the snow on the ground. so just incredible for the snow- lovers. for the rest of the people who don't like it as much, nothing like we have seen earlier in the season. i wanted to show you this graphic here. we have that same storm off to the north, spinning around. still a chance for snowshowers, but eventually it will leave us and yes, adam is right, there is a chance for another storm. i have to laugh when i tell you that. i'm not kidding around. a.m. >> thank you, since the heave yes snow first hit baltimore a lot have been wondering when their trash is going to get back to normal. the city aflounced that trash pickups will return to their regular trash locations. baltimore city also says it's

in the process of rescheduling february bulk pick up. you can call 311 if you have any questions and live in baltimore city. maryland now one step closer to a tax credit, encouraging companies to hire unemployed recommends. the senate approved the legislation, that would award a tax credit to employers who hire jobless marylanders. joe creation is key for maryland to bounce back from the recession. today's a super saturday in baltimore county. health officials want to make sure that you don't forgot to get your flu shots for seasonal flu and the h1n1 virus. not only are they worried about another outbreak, but also that you don't become a victim. >> reporter: it pays to advertise. >> we were driving down york road and i saw the bear on the corner outside on the street, and they said free h1n1 shots

and so we pulled in. >> reporter: he brought the kiddies. >> i have heard a lot on the tv that hevbeen saying to come out and get the shots, because they are thinking it could spike back up in the spring. i figured we better get it done. >> reporter: dr. gregory branch couldn't have said it better and, in fact, in case you haven't heard, he will say it again. >> it comes in waves. it comes in a big wave and then kind of subsides and you think that it's gone. then it comes right back with a vengeance. so what we're trying to prevent is that third wave. and so is that that is why it's so important that everyone come in and get their vaccination. >> reporter: baltimore county is providing both seasonal flu and h1n1 vaccinations monday through friday between 10 and 4 and you don't have to be a resident to get one. that is right, while initially

. the show goes on at seaworld today on a few days after a veteran train ser tragically killed by an osha. hundreds filled the amphitheater to watch the first killer whale show since the attack. trainers were notice allowed in the water, meaning that some spectacular stunts were missing from the show. at the end, it was a tribute to the 40-year-old veteran trainer, dawn brancheau, visitors described what it's like to be at that show today. >> i just wanted to be here for this show, to make sure that it continued. it's so professional and it touched so many lives and i

don't think there was a dry eye in the stands when they mentioned this was a tribute. >> the medical examiner says brancheau died from drowning and multiple traumatic injuries. friends of brancheau say she loved her job and knew what she was doing when she choose her career. >> osmond's son has died. osmond didn't provide any details about the 18-year-old's death. entertainment tonight is reporting that he jumped to his death from a downtown los angeles apartment building on friday night. la police did respond to the suicide last night, but the victim has not been identified. michael was one of the osmond's five adopted children. one of the students shot outside of a littleton, colorado school spoke out. he was one of two students shot in deer creek's middle school apartment.

he was shot in the chest and currently recovering. the 8th grader talked about that day and what he remembers. >> i saw people like running, so i decided to run also. i got my skateboard and my books and i started running. then i got shot. >> matthew and his family say the support, praise and gifts from others are playing a big roles any recovery and he also says he is ready to go back-to- school. a well a couple in columbia, south carolina opened their mail and got quite a shock at what they found inside. they found a dead duck inside a mangled package that they had shipped over from japan. the two just returned from a trip there were they arranged for several gifts to be shipped back. the post office is investigating that incident. the white house is showing their support this black history month. president obama signed a new executive order and says the order strengthens the white house initiative to support

historically black colleges and universities and says the schools have specifically felt the pain of the recession, because they enroll a higher proposition of lower and middle- income students. tonight gigi barnett explains the university's new state-of-the-art facility is for neighbors, student and alumni. >> inside coppin state's new arena are 4100 seats, large windows and a gymnasium floor that shows and. >> the fact you can walk around and still be in the gym. >> reporter: had a that with is what the university tried to achieve. athletes spent more than two decades into the old facility, until the university asked the state to build a new ascene. >> this weekend coppin opened the indoor/outdoor sports complex when most alumni were on campus. >> when people come to this

campus and they see this, oh, god, it will make young people feel better about themselves and it will raise a generation of people who have greater expectations. >> reporter: now this isn't coppin's first gym. it's the newest with a pricetag of $136 million and 24 of,000- square-feet, the first basketball games begin this week. >> it's much-needed. >> she is a two-time coppin state graduate and most excited about the physicalid fitness classes that the university plan as to offer in the new gym. hicks says the sports complex is a coppin connection in the community. >> i'm glad to see it. >> we had a fitness center, but it closed about a year-ago and people had to really scramble for a place to go. so everybody is really excited and looking forward to the fitness sister opening up.

gigi barnett, wjz, eyewitness news. new facility. well, the sports complex also features a tennis and softball complex and an outdoor track. wow, three-and-a-half feet of snow in western maryland. >> that is what we have been talking about. >> unbelievable amount of snow. >> they are saying this week alone, 40" and for this season,233". >> that is skiable. [ laughter ] >> watch the skis. it's a great time to get out from. >> a lot of people are fedup with the snow, but unfortunately it's not out of forecast. we're getting closer and closer to spring. these are very light, but you can see when i put it in motion, how they come down from the north and fizzle out and build back up again. i will show you the general moment how this has been

working out and it's coming out of the northwest. it mixes with a little bit of greensboro so a few sprinkles in addition,s to the flurries and that is because temperatures are are above freezing, 33 in ocean city and 36 in baltimore. it's 23 degrees in oakland and the winds have courtroom down significantly since the last few days, but they are still up today, although they died down again to tonight. wind gusts over 39 miles per hour today and with these winds out, it's still come down. a few more inches of snow are expected. here is our storm spiring offer to the north and the store of wobbly around, but it still has snow on the western edge and it's sort of building up and dying down as we head through the evening hours and that is because this storm has already peaked. it reached its highest intensity a day and a half ago.

but by monday, this finally gets out of here. we get a break in the weather for the first day of march. then, it looks like the clouds come back in tuesday as yet another storm system comes our way. this bun is going to cut out of the rockies and across the south. this one, does to make a bigger turn to the coast or scoot by and then head out to sea? irregardless, it looks like there is a chance of a little bit of snow tuesday night into wednesday with the storm. if it does come closer to the coast, we'll be talking more snow. so that is something that we'll be watching and keep you updated on small-craft advisories in effect. tomorrow we go up to 43, but take a look at monday. here is the day that is the warmest. 49 degrees and sunshine a chance for snow tuesday into wednesday and cold behind the
