gus: clemente turns the corner, steps back. he feeds the post. [whistle] kelly, and a hand-checking foul coming up. what a game here in salt lake. we're tied at 74-74 in overtime. kansas state-xavier. we've had eight ties, 11 lead changes. len: curtis kelly on the line. only 1-4 thus far. he makes that one. and this game has been about subtleties in the game. down the stretch, frank martin makes a calm. has to be able to foul before xavier can get off a three. first foul not called. the second is called. durrell hole -- terrell holloway knocks them down and that's why we're in overtime right now.

gus: bounce pass love. rejected! what a blocked shot by kelly. his third of the game. len: jason love misses the first one and then kelly comes out. he probably wishes he could have kept it inbounds. gus: jackson the inbounder. crawford pulling out. len: he'll pull up from there. gus: crawford looking for creases. down the lane. batted around. out of bounds. and kansas state will get it again. sutton. kelly inside and the foul.

and that was samuels posting up and he's fouled from behind. len: nifty play inside. you get your point guard curling off to see if the big men would help. taylor does help and he realized what was going to happen so he pulled samuels down. gus: samuels 2-3 from the line and he gets the first. 77-74. and now a sub getting ready to come in for xavier. it's brad redford, who hit two big threes in this game. and he goes to get andrew taylor. len: xavier is putting some firepower out there from beyond the arc, both with redford and

jackson. both of them 40% or better from beyond the arc. catch and shoot guys. that means you look for holloway maybe to try to penetrate and threaten start kicking. gus: second free throw he gets the roll. four-point game. here comes holloway with crawford. len: so you have three outstanding three-point shooters for xavier. gus: redford on the floor. crosscourt to crawford. len: and two good penetrators in holloway and crawford. gus: holloway three. oh! bam! he rattled it home. 78-77. len: and i know xavier expected holloway to deliver it but maybe not necessarily like that. maybe off the bounce and kick it to the three-point shooters but you take the opportunities as you find them. gus: samuels.

kelly. left hand jump hook, sweet! the big boys have shown up tonight. 17 for kelly. three-point game. len: how about the footwork inside for kelly to get in position? gus: holloway again. hesitation! he has 21. len: fast break martin wondering where's the defense. critical juncture. a guard shouldn't be able to walk down the heart of your d without somebody coming up to contest from the weak side, from the help side. gus: kelly. inside. samuels. [whistle] and one! len: you talk about toughness, that's what's going to win this basketball game. look at samuels inside. locate the defense, makes the move.

crawford tries to strip. if you're going to do that you have to make sure he doesn't get that ball above his chest. put him on the free-throw line. gus: samuels with 10 points, four rebounds. misses the free throw and that's a foul on sutton. it's a push in the back and i believe sutton has fouled out of this game. yes, he has. len: we talked about the foul trouble. two of their best defenders. samuels and sutton. particularly dominic sutton. he's a defensive expert, usually assigned to the top perimeter player of the opposition. he's gone as well and jamar samuels, a big 12 sixth man of the year, another defensive specialist still out there for kansas state. gus: so at the end of

regulation the score here was 72-72. 1:18 to play in overtime. kansas state hold on to an 82-79 lead and jordan crawford goes to the line to shoot. len: 77% free throw shooter. and the ante is up when you're playing for a chance to go to the elite eight. gus: and he's shooting two. both teams in the bubble bonus. -- double bonus. and he gets a pair. one-point game. 1:18 to play. overtime. the win ere advances to the elite eight and will have a shot at the final four against the butler bulldogs.

clemente inside. and a foul. len: tell you what, kansas state dodged one that time. good body position because this is not a good angle to feed that post right there. taylor, had he went after it with his left arm, turned his body around he might have been able to deflect that and create a foul. instead he created contact. kansas state gets the benefit. gus: samuels 4-6 from the free-throw line. down the stretch, kansas state hitting their free throws. len: i'll tell you this. i am so impressed with both of these teams. throughout the season we lament how free throw shooting is a lost after the, not practiced. it doesn't even seem that young men care about shooting it.

this is where it counts and for every guy sitting at home that longs to be in this tournament at this stage, you better work on your free throw. gus: samuels gets them both. three-point gale. 84- 1. holloway. redford back on the court. holloway turns, flies, oh, he made it again! any time in any form. wow! len: i guess you can work on that too, huh? gus: yes. clemente, pullen. drives, to the bucket, got it! k-state up by a deuce. and the shot clock turned off. 86-84. here comes holloway. crosses over. for three. no. and the rebound by

merriewether, who's quickly fouled. len: you had a feeling it was coming. terrell holloway feeling it. trying to end it. took a three maybe when he didn't necessarily have to. with his breakdown skills could have gotten to the basket. gus: but he did take it at a time in which xavier will get another crack at the basketball. len: they knew they'd have to foul regardless. you it's a two-possession game if per -- merriewether knocks down these two. gus: 73% free throw shooter. len: different kind of ballgame for a guy who's only averaged eight minutes a game throughout the season.

gus: one more for merriewether. and he gets the bounce. 87-74. 1.1 to go. holloway has shown a flair for the dramatic. holloway kicks it out. crawford. eight. he's got to hurry. oh! clemente. clemente fires! len: crawford takes matters into his own hands. he doesn't care where he is on the floor as long as he's behind the line and the guy averaging 27 1/2 points coming into this game in the tournament. gus: 87-87. we're going to double overtime. let's check in with greg gumbel. greg g.: all right, gus. again, what else would you expect from this tournament. we'll get you back for overtime. let's go for the final minute and eight second in syracuse. kentucky by 12 over cornell. once again dick enberg and jay bilas. jay: they just came into the season expecting to win and certainly did. beat st. john's. alabama on the road. [whistle] dick: patterson rebounds dale's miss and kentucky will go to the other end for the free throw. and bledsoe is stopping the

difficulties with four straight connections from free throw territory and dale goes out with five fouls 17 points to lead this big red team and what a career for louis dale iv. not recruited, out of birmingham, alabama. went to ithaca, to cornell. second leading scorer, 12 1/2 a game. 17 tonight but not much offensive help from the big red in evening against kentucky. he'll get a big hand as he comes out. he's had a great career, this young kid. reality starting to sink on this terrific senior laden team. greg g.: greg gumbel in new york. let's get you back out to salt lake city. they're about to start the second overtime there. xavier and kansas state tied at 7-87. gus johnson and len elmore. gus: what a game it's been.

double overtime. we were tied at 72-72 at the end of regulation. now after one overtime, tied at -- 7-87. the winner advancing to the elite eight to take on butler. samuels, pullen, mer merit -- merriewether, clemente, kelly for k state. here's clemente down the lane. rebounded by love. crawford, crossover dribble. 15-footer. and they're on! this kid is turning out to be a motor city madman. 89-87, crawford with 28. len: this is going to turn out to be a game of attrition with the foul problems kansas state has, with the fatigue that both teams are feeling and certainly the pressure will facilitate that fatigue here in the second overtime. but jordan crawford is hungry, feeling it and he thrives in

the spotlight. gus: kelly. he has been terrific. 19 points for curtis kelly and he ties it at 89-89. holloway in the corner. crawford again. love. and samuels with the rebound. now pullen quickly into the frontcourt. down the lane. the runner. kelly with the big-time finish! crawford. inside, knocked away and stolen. len: got himself in trouble in the short corner. tribble teamed. pullen. gus: oh, he fumbled it out of bounds. len: kansas state didn't stand there and celebrate on the kelly dunk right here. instead they got back quickly on defense, triple-teamed crawford and forceed that turnover. gus: and kelly ask is injured.

len: oh, man, what a huge, huge turn of events for kansas state. curtis kelly, just a tower of strength inside. looks like he's severely injured that right hand. gus: 2130eu7b89s, eight rebounds for kelly on 9-17 shooting. 91-89, k-state. holloway to jackson. love, crawford. and taylor. len: as much as he complained about it here he comes back to the scorer's table. gus: crawford -- crawford to the basket. painted it in! crawford, ranked 24th in the nation and scoring, has put on a show. he has 30 and he ties it at 91-91. len: and kansas state hopes they get a break in the action to make -- get kelly back in

the ballgame. it wasn't his hand. he was bent over with with fatigue. gus: fall against xavier's andrew taylor. len: terrell holloway kept xavier in the game during regulation. it's been jordan crawford who in both overtimes has stepped up, not to take anything away from holloway, particularly in the first overtime. but crawford is feeling it right now. when kelly us walked off the floor he was holding that hand bent over but it just seems as though he's as tired as anyone out there. i talked about this being a battle of attrition. whole lot of foul trouble out there. just one away from somebody being disqualified among the key players. gus: luis colon missing the first. 42% free throw shooter. and he missed the pair. len: he's not the guy that

frank martin would like out on the floor. kelly can't get in the game because there's no stoppage of the clock to allow it. gus: redford back in the game for xavier. we're tied at 91-91 in double o.t. pullen guarding crawford. and chris mack, the head coach in his first year wants a time-out. len: he might have done kansas state a favor.
