virginia where the latest briefing has just wrapped up. >> reporter: good morning. and we're told it should take two, maybe three hours for rescue workers to get to the place where they think four missing miners might be. >> right now we're in a full rescue. >> reporter: early this morning, four teams, 32 people total, boarded underground railcars and started the search for the four missing miners. >> riding as far as they can and then going by foot from that location. >> reporter: until early this morning, poisonous gases had been keeping rescue crews from heading back into the mine. a team of emergency workers drilled a series of holes more than 1,000 feet down to vent the toxic mix. officials are hoping to reach an air tight refuge center stocked with enough food and water to last four days where they hope to find three miners. they believe the fourth miner is no more than 1,000 feet away from them. >> we're hopeful that we can go

in and finish this mission, but if we encounter conditions that preclude that, we'll make adjustments. >> reporter: at a candlelight vigil last night, people wore miners uniforms in tribute to those lost and those they hope will still be found al hive. eula wright thinks her nephew is one of the four missing and will be found alive. >> i won't accept it until they go in and let everybody know. i picture him still ricky. >> reporter: on monday, the same day as the explosion, massey energy, the owner of the mine, was cited twice by federal authorities for safety violations, but a top federal mine official says he's confident those violations had nothing to do with the explosion. maggie? >> jim axelrod in know made, thank you. joining us now, governor mansion. good morning.

>> good morning. how close do you feel we are to having an answer about the fate of those four missing miners? >> we believe we'll have that answer today and it will move very rapidly. at 4:55 this morning, we had four teams go into the upper big branch portal. and that's 32 rescuers and they're progressing pretty rapidly. they're on a man trip on the rails and they'll be able to use that until they have to stop because of the conditions. with you they have to be very cautious not to get ahead of any danger, so they'll be monitoring and assessing the complete conditions of that mine and then h they'll have to do the rest of the way by foot carrying all of their gear in. we're in a total rescue mode right now, maggie, until we are able to go in there and find the four miners that we haven't been able to locate. that means that we'll be in a total rescue mode. if for any reason, and i can tell you the desires of the

family, if for any reason that we get to a certain point and we can't get back to where we know that we have not located three of those, the families' desire and we'll see if the conditions will allow will switch to a dual role of rescue and recovery so that we can start bringing our loved ones, our loved miners and family members, out and do our recovery as we're still doing our rescue. but right now, totally rescue and rescue only. >> in other words, as long as it's safe, these 32 rescuers will not turn back until they find these miners one way or the other, whether a rescue or a recovery. >> that's correct. that's correct. and we pretty much know where they should be. we have that sliver of hope that if anybody was able to make it to the chamber that we haven't baby ab been able to check, if they can get back into that, that's where

they could not get before and they had to be stopped because of such bad conditions in the air. we'll see if we can progress back into there, we call it they'll be in a free air, fult, operating without any apparatus. if they have to go to the apparat apparatuses, you can only go so far. but the families' desires and wishes are if they have to wait until they can finish that part of the rescue, please at that time they've asked to start the recovery and bring the loved ones out. >> we certainly salute the efforts of those re could you sayers and hope for a good answer later today. governor mansion, thank you so much. >> we're still praying for that miracle. now more breaking news overnight, that terror scare in midair. a middle eastern dip will he matt was detained by air marshals last night after smoking in an airplane's restroom and joking he was lighting his shoes on fire. bob orr is in washington with

the latest. >> reporter: well, it was as you say quite a scare. for about an hour or so last night, there were reports that another shoe bombing had been attempted on a u.s. passenger plane. firt jets were scrambled and it was only after the jetliner landeded in denver that we learned what really triggered the alarm. he's described as third second to the kuttary embassy. he was on a flight bound for denver. firnls say he at some point left his first class seat and went to the plane's bathroom to apparently smoke a cigarette. when he emerged, two air marshals also in first class stopped hip and sat with him for the remainder of the flight. one passenger told his wife it was handled quickly and quietly. >> he called and said there's been an stiincident, some guy g

mad and had a tantrum. >> reporter: he reportedly made a joke about trying to light his shoes on fire, a reference to the shoe bomber richard reid. and that set off alarm bells. two f-16 fighter jets were scrambled from buckley air force base in colorado and escorted the boeing 757 for the last five minutes of its flight. the plane carrying 157 passengers and a crew of six arrived in denver at 6:50 mountain time. the ambassador to the u.s. defendeded him. he was travel to go denver on official embassy business on my instructions and he was certainly not engaged in any threatening activity. the facts will reveal that this was a mistake. in the end, we have to say no explosives were found, that investigators determined he would not be charged with any crime. but we have to say the incident has again jank gelled nerves coming as it did just 3 1/2 months after the attempted christmas day bombing in detroit. >> bob, when authorities when

all is said and done authorities look at this as an act stupidity? >> reporter: that's good way to put it. a numb top officials, nobody was laughing. this was serious business. it's just fortunate that nothing worse happened here. >> bob orr in washington this morning. thank you so much. tim burney was also a passenger on flight 663 sitting just in front of mohammed. and he joins us this morning. >> good morning. how are you? >> i'm well. what an incident last night. did you notice any odd behavior or anything strange going on on this flight last night? >> you know, i didn't. it didn't become apparent that there was a problem at least not to me until we had landed and that we'd pulled off the runway and everything started to go pretty fast and then i realized that there was a problem. >> so you were not aware, for instance, that this guy had been smoking in the restroom or that marshals had basically taken him back to his seat and had him in

quotation marks in custody on the flight? >> no, i wasn't aware of that as i said until we had landed. everything seemed normal to me. i got to admit, i was working on my computer until we were in our final approach, but as we landed and pulled off the runway, the pilot came on and indicated that we need to stay in our seats, we were obviously far away from the gate, and it seemed odd that we would park that far away waiting for a gate. and then the flight attendants came on and told us to stay off of our cell phones. and then it turned out to be the air marshal in front of me was talking on his telephone and i could hear some of the things he was saying at that point. i saw lights outside and you could tell that there was something going on. and it was focused on the seat behind me. >> so the air marshal is right in front of you. what were you able to ascertain from their conversation? >> well, i'll tell you, i heard -- i was in the third row

by the window. and the air marshal that was directly in front of me a little bit to the side in the aisle seat as well as the air marshal that was sitting next to the person they took off the plane was sitting behind me and on the aisle and i kind of heard both conversations. the person in front of me was talking to what i believe is a superior and was getting instruction, was relaying some information. i heard him talking about that. and then i started to pay attention to the conversation behind me and i heard the air marshal behind me indicate to the passenger to tell the truth and just relax. and they appeared to have everything under control. could you tell there was a heightened sense of awareness, but it certainly appeared they had everything under control. gr. >> so i guess if you're an air marshal you're making sure that this guy is who he says he is and what he has allegedly done is just that, just smoking a cigarette in the restroom. >> as i said, i wasn't aware of the fact that he had been in the restroom.

but, again, they had it under control. it was clear that the action was behind me with this individual passenger, but they had it under control. the pilot was communicating to us. the flight attendants were communicating. so i look back on it and certainly it was almost surreal, but they handled it so well, i think they helped us all remain calm as passengers. >> very interesting stuff. we do appreciate your time. thank positive sharing your story with us. >> you bet. thank you. betty nguyen is at the news desk. >> let's check in at 7:12. good morning. well, it is a new start for the united states and russia. in prague this morning, president obama and the russian president signed a major nuclear arms reduction treaty that slashes the number of strategic nuclear warhead hs. here's a live picture of that. chip reid is traveling with the president. >> reporter: well, it was almost exactly one year ago that the

president came here to prague to call for a world without nuclear weapons. the president says the treaty signed today is progress in that direction. president obama arrived in prague thursday morning to sign what the white house calls a historic agreement with russia on reducing nuclear arms. white house advisers say a full year of intense negotiations has also helped foster better relations with russia and with president dmitry medvedev. today's meeting was the eighth time the two leaders have met. >> together we've stopped that drift and proven the benefits of cooperation. today is an important milestone for nuclear security and nonproliferation and no u.s./russia relations. it fulfills or common objective to negotiate a new take strategic arms reduction treaty. it includes significant reductions in the nuclear weapons that we will deploy.

it cuts our delivery vehicles by roughly half. it includes a comprehensive var any indication regime which allows us to further build trust. >> reporter: the new treaty calls for reducing arsenals from 2200 warheads to 1550. the president says this treaty is an important step in the direction of a world without nuclear weapons. a long term goal he proclaimed here in prague in a speech just over a year ago. top white house officials say they're hopeful the treaty will be ratified by the senate later this year by a large bipartisan majority. experts say the nuclear threat from russia is not what it once was. >> i have to say i don't lie awake late at night worrying about a russian nuclear attack, but i'll still feel a little bit better and i think americans will be a little bit safer when there's less russian strategic weapons that can be pointed at the united states. >> reporter: also high on the agenda for discussions between the two presidents, what to do about iran. sanctions to try to get iran to stop its nuclear weapons

tiger back playing golf and i think the chairman, he does this every year, he has a state of the union for golf, if you will, on the eve of the tournament. he touches on a whole lot of different topics and tiger was just one of the things he talked about. and chairman payne is a very bold and daring leader and he's also a man who writes his own scripts and speeches and very eloquent and i think he put it into appropriate words there yesterday. >> you have been able to see, we have all been able to see, a lot of tiger over the last couple of days. what do you think, do you see -- what do you think when you see him out there? >> i see -- i definitely see a change, harry. he's interacting with people a whole lot more. i was monday night calling the championship game in independent map police and i had to scoot down here first thing tuesday morning and just by chance the first player that i ran into was tiger by 10:00 in the morning on tuesday. and of course this was pot for some sort of sit down interview, this was just out casually walking the golf course and i ran into tiger on the 11th hole.

learned a lesson. they needed his real part. but i don't think anyone expected him to plate daddy ded card. >> and i don't know if tiger is a brilliant actor, but he's on the verge of tears. it looks like he's almost admitting without saying a word that he let down his father. >> with the big puppy dog eye, it's scar scare troy to look at. but it's the church of the holy swoosh is giving him abc solution and exonerating him so they can move on. they want to get this over with, address it in some way indirectly, so that they can start selling clubs and pants and shirts and hats again. and they feel like this was the best way to address it, although it brings up another irony in that the reputation of his father. >> that's the thing. because if you're somebody who revered and respected your dad as much as tiger did, you might say, look, some things are sacred, leave my father out of

and we move forward or does the story hang out there for the rest of the year oond maybe for the rest of his career? >> i think that every time we see tiger, the story loses a little bit of its sizzle as the week goes on on. he had his mea culpa on february 19th and everybody was like i have to look what he looks like, what he sounds lime. and then his interviews a couple weeks back and wasn't quite as-of-everyone wasn't quite as awe struck. and then there's been coverage of help playing here monday, tuesday, wednesday. every single day, it kind of loses a little bit of the luster. but it's a case by case basis. everyone has a different opinion. if he wins, there will be a lot of people that won't be won over ever, but there are people who just want to isolate on the goflder and have the forgiveness in their heart to move on. so there's not one answer to that. >> i guess you're right.

security council for, quote, strong sanctions on iran. also this morning, rescue crews have re-entered a west virginiian coal mine in search of four miners missing since monday's explosion. cbs news national correspondent jim axelrod is in naoma with details. >> reporter: good morning. it's four teams of rescue workers, 32 overall. they've been inside the mine now since just before 5:00. they need to travel somewhere near five miles or so, which is a trip that could take two to three hours. they'll make the first part of it in these underground railcars. debris is not an issue. it's a question of getting rid of some of these toxic gases which the officials were able to do and now the rescue crews are able to get back as the governor of west virginia has said, they are advancing as quickly as possible. but joe mansion, the governor, even acknowledged the long odds the rescue workers are facing in
