shock and surprise. a young girl disappears without a trace on friday. >> today, she's found alive, after four days alone in a florida swamp. >> hi again, everybody. i'm mary bubala. >> i'm kai jackson. here's what people are talking about. a happy ending in florida, after an exhaustive search. a volunteer finds a missing young girl in very dangerous terrain. sandra hughes reports for wjz, the 11-year-old girl, who suffers from an autism-like disorder, has been missing for days. >> reporter: rescuers pulled nadia bloom out of a swamp. and carried her away on a stretcher. after four days missing, she was alive but dehydrated. >> i burst. i went in and told my wife, nadia is in good condition. she has insect bite from head

to toe. no shoes. the paramedic noticed that she had -- her feet were very, very water-logged, as if been standing in the water for a while. >> rescue worker his to wade through the muddy swamp and cut through brush with machetes to pull the girl out. but it was just one man, james king, a friend from church, who discovered nadia. he was taken to headquarters this morning. >> how are you feeling? >> i'm feeling tall. i'm 6 feet and this was short. >> her sister led police to an area where they often play, but it was a difficult search, hampered by dense undergrowth in the swamp. her family believes the girl, who has a form of autism, known as asperger's, just went off. >> she loves to go on the bike. and she stopped and went to

take pictures. >> reporter: nadia and her parents were reunited inside. sandra hughes, wjz eyewitness news. >> nadia had been reading a book about american girl doll laney who has outdoor adventures, when she disappeared. testimony is over in the trial of a baltimore teen accused of shooting a first grader is now in the hands of the jury. vic is live with more on the trial. >> police say 16-year-old lamont davis intended to shoot someone else, but it shot little raven white in the head. the crime was caught on surveillance video. the defense says davis was at home on the time, on gps monitoring and could not have fired the shot. davis admits being outside his home the day of the shooting but denies any involvement in the shooting. >> davis is facing attempted first-degree murder charges. a chaotic scene in college park is now making news across

the country. wjz has obtained video of police in riot gear, beating students with nightsticks. kelly mcpherson is here to explain what is happening. >> reporter: one officer is suspended. and the chief of police is trying to identify all of the other officers who are seen in this video, beating the student. >> reporter: when the university of maryland basketball team beat duke university, a riot broke out in college park. >> there were some people getting ready to pull signs in and stuff. cops were chasing us. it was pretty wild. >> reporter: this video from that night shows an intense police beating. watch the student in light- colored pants, skipping down the sidewalk. this was jack mckenna, who was later charged with disorderly conduct and assaulting a police officer. instead, at least three prince george's county officers beat him. >> you have a person who is committing no crime, who is

completely defenseless. and who is beaten. >> reporter: another student was charged when he says in reality, police beat him, too. these are the injuries, including staples on jack's head. both students plan to sue the police department. >> i think that if they were like hurting in any way, i think they definitely should. i don't think the police had the right to act the way they did. >> reporter: the beating caught on camera happened right here on knox road, in a busy area off campus. and the video was shot by a student who was watching from a dorm room across the street. >> you can see he stopped. the police don't give him a single order. he doesn't say a thing to the police. and they jump him. >> reporter: the chief of police has suspended one officer and says he is trying to identify the other. >> i'm outraged. i'm disappointed. again, that is not the type of professional conduct that i condone here in this agency. again, that type of excessive force will not be tolerated. >> in the past few days,

charges against both students have been dropped. >> they attempted to charge the students in an effort to cover up their own misconduct. >> he does not know how many officers in total will be identified. back to you inside. >> right now, the prince george's county police chief is holding a brief investigation. wjz is there. a live update at 5:00. two engines collide this afternoon. all four firefighters were treated on the scene and taken to shock trauma for further evaluation. a maryland center wants to keep airlines for charging customers for carry-on luggage. weijia jiang is here to explain the bill. >> senator mary landrove, cosponsored the bill that would prohibit fees.

they would also require airlines to disclose extra fees for specially-checked items ahead of time. they it would still determine baggage rules. and to decide the numbers of carry-ons per person. >> weijia. so far, only one airline has a charge for carry-on bags. senator cardin says the law is needed now before other air carriers try to do the same. the 2010 general assembly is over. and a lot was done in the session's final minutes. political reporter pat warren has more on the bills the governor signed into law today. >> 2010. an election year session, with little controversy. and lawmakers basically on their best behavior. >> the end of the section means little use. last night, governor o'malley

astronauts on the shuttle discovery made their third and final spacewalk on their mission today. astronauts spent more than six hours installing a storage tank and made preparations for the next shuttle visit. they relish their last glimpse. discovery is due back on earth monday. an incredible rescue. a family's car flips into a raging canal. and an elderly woman is inferly swept awe by the rush -- away by the rushing water. >> witnesses could only watch as 74-year-old janet hogan battled a current float to stay in a canal, located east of san francisco. she had already escaped a car crash that killed her husband and son. >> i can't really answer any questions specific to the cause, whether the car was accelerating, whether he lost control. >> heavy rain transformed a

walnut creek waterway into a raging river. moving nearly 20 miles per hour. hogan was carried three miles from the crash site. she managed to stay afloat long enough for a california rescue crew arrive. the team moved in quickly after spotting hogan go under. and on the second try, pulled her unconscious body from the 50-degree water to safety. >> hogan's husband's body has not yet been recovered. 79-year-old james hogan was last seen floating downstream before his wife was rescued. can the dow stay above the 11,000 mark? tuesday appears to be another good day for the markets. dow was up 13 points. s&p up almost a point. nasdaq up 8. let's go to new york right now. where farnoosh torabi has

tonight's cbs money watch update. >> washington mutual's former ceo is defending the bank's practices before it fell. they argued that wamu had enough money and should not have been seized by the government. washington mutual has been the biggest bank ever to fail. americans shot more for foreign goods. high demands for imported tvs and clothing outweighed exports, causing the u.s. trade deficit to widen to roughly $40 billion. overall comiftds like the news, because is means consumers are spending more. and there say don't-buy warning. the suv has a high risk of rolling over during certain turns. it is the latest news to hurt toyota's reputation, after recalling millions of vehicles due to faulty gas pedals.

first warning doppler radar. it is making for a chilly one out there. and this is where we're seeing the rain pick up. for pretty much an an evening commute. these areas are headed southeastward. where you see it heavy, it's going to pick up in the direction of frederick, mount airy and libertytown. and that same idea south. we have light rain all the way from bel air down through crofton and annapolis. that is going to pick up with that next batch. also rain in southern parts of the eastern shore. that is heading southeast ward. so it's picking up at this point. and that's going to continue down. overall, this is what it looks like earlier today. the clouds came in overnight and the rains started to pick up. and we continued to see it coming down from the northwest. it will continue pushing southward, as we head into tonight. and tomorrow, it will be gone. and sunshine is going to return. but while we have this rain around, the winds are also out of the northeast. that is pulling in pretty

chilly air. 49 degrees in baltimore. we've only made it to the low 50s so far. 59 now in d.c. and this is a warmer day. we do have that wind coming off the water as has been the case the past couple of days. so not much of a fluctuation there. but for the rest of us, much cooler than it has been lately. here's the front, off to the north, slowly trying to push south of us. and when it does, it's going to bring all of the rain and the cloud the with it. clouds with t. so maybe still some clouds by tomorrow afternoon. sunshine returns as high pressure settles in. the other thing you notice, there is another storm off to our north. that is going to swing by on thursday. starting to bring in warmer air. we jump back into the 70s. 70s again on friday. but at that point, again, there is a chance for a few showers that will continue into saturday. so overall, when we put it together for a forecast, looks like this. winds out of the east tomorrow, eventually turning around to the south at about 5 to 10

happy 100th birthday to the patterson park branch of the enoch pratt free library. old and new patrons celebrated the milestone. >> ♪ happy birthday >> reporter: this is a birthday party 98-year-old margaret yassy wouldn't miss. >> i was so attached to this frant. -- branch. i lived in this neighborhood until i was married. and i just felt it was my home away from home. >> reporter: the patterson park branch of the enoch pratt free library, turned 100 years old. and margaret remembers what she used to borrow when she was 7. >> louisa may alcott wrote "little men" and "little women." they were my favorite. >> reporter: young people continue to come here, many right after school every day. >> i read nonfiction books over here. and i really like it. >> i like fiction books. and black history. >> reporter: the library has

meteorologist berb det wood -- bern did bernadette woods is tracking the rain. >> this has picked up in intensity. elsewhere, a whole lot of rain and lighter drizzle out there. except in this area. that's where we're seeing the yellow and orange pop up. that's where there is a heavier rain at this point. and it's making its way down to the southeast. it's going to pick up also. now, a little farther south and east of that. columbia, starting to pick up a little bit, too. and even this past half hour, we've seen it dark in columbia and annapolis park. there is rain and drizzle out there. and that's making for a chilly afternoon. we were only in the 40s right now. we have changes coming. we'll have that forecast coming up in a bit. let's check in on the roads now with kristy breslin, wjz traffic control. a like ride and a very busy one out there. as far as accidents and delays go on the west side outer loop. the liberty on-ramp.

a high-speed crash claims the life of 16-year-old brothers and two other teens from texas. police say the boy's vehicle collided with a pickup truck, after they drove through a red light. detectives have not determined which boy was driving. vatican unveils a new policy for cases of sexual abuse. >> reporter: from a catholic church in crisis, mixed message from officials.

on a trip to the vatican from chile, he said among reporters, i have been told recently that there is a relationship between homosexuality and pedo feelia. i read it in a document written by psychologists. so that's the problem. that prompted outrage from gay rights groups, including the human rights campaign, which told cbs news, quote,a reputable studies have prove and common sense bears out, there is no connection between gay people and pedophilia. when the church makes gay team the scapegoat for pedophiles, it leaves one problem and creates another. >> they have not admitted to the cover-up. they are in constant denial. >> father james gahill, a long- time critic, blasted the church's hierarchy. >> if, by the slimmest of

with the burning liquid and suffered severe burns. the 14-year-old is charged with second-degree assault. a woman in texas experiences a mother's worst nightmare, when someone steals her vehicle with her children inside. the woman pulled over to look at a home for rent and left the engine running. another woman then jumps in her suv and took off with her 5- year-old. police arrested the suspect after she dropped the children off a few blocks away. they were reunited with their mother a short time later. a sheriff's deputy in florida is accused of using a weapon on his coworker. and it's all caught to tape. >> police say the male deputy tasered a female deputy inside a county jail. surveillance video shows the coworker talking on her cell phone. that's when the male deputy reaches for his taser and rushes to the other side of the room. the deputy says he was just joking around. but he did receive what the department calls a final warning. vic, back to you.

>> and it really wasn't that much heavier earlier today. but it has picked up in the last couple of hours. let's show you doppler radar. we're going to take you on a tour here and show you what we've got going on. in the city, it is that lighter rain and the sprinkles. just off to the south, in annapolis, starting to pick up. you can see that by all of the yellows popping up now. to the northwest of that, this band continues. and it's heavier rain. just to the south of thurmont, around hagerstown, heading into frederick, it's really picking up in mount airy. and columbia. now, west of that, not quite as heavy. you about still some rain lingering. and on the eastern shore, southern parts of maryland. cambridge east, not heavy yet. but that is going to change over the next 15 to 30 minutes. we'll switch it over and show you this is the lighter rain and drizzle. clouds came in overnight. there's that rain and it picked up in the last couple of hours as the front is sort of on top of us. now, at the same time, we have some really cool air in place. the winds are out of the

northeast. tapping into even cooler air that is off to the northeast of us. and we are sitting in the 40s for most of us this afternoon. we only topped out in the low 50s. it's 50 degrees now in d.c. 46. and 48 degrees in baltimore. quite a swing from yesterday. when we open up, you can see this is a big storm out to our west. this in between, with the stalled-out front that is starting to break apart. as it does, it's going to allow the runoff to the south. and tomorrow, sunshine will return during the afternoon. high pressure is going to settle in behind that at the same time. you know, the storm is going to get closer. ahead of it, we will warm up. tomorrow, we jump back into the 60s. on thursday, we're back in the 70s. and friday also in the 70s. by friday, though, this storm comes a little closer. and once again, we have the chance for some showers. and that is going to linger into saturday. now, out on the waters with this going on, winds on the water at the east. eventually turning around to

ioing outrange. tonight, the video of the attack, raising questions about the actions of the officers. hi, everybody. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. chaos erupts. now, amateur video of a student being beat by a police officer has maryland leaders reacting strongly tonight. mary, that happened about half hour ago. the police chief said he has not been able to identify all of the officers involved at this point. however, he has identified one of those officers, a person that he is not naming at this point. and that person has been suspended. outrage has spread
