good evening, i'm jessica kartalija and here's what people are talking about. a 4-alarm fire breaks out in downtown annapolis and the firefighters rush todd -- rush to the business. suzanne collins has more, it happened as a huge crowd was assembling a block away. >> reporter: the fire started to burn as hundreds were passing by for a festival. this was on maryland avenue and luckily, no one was injured including tenants and clerks who worked below. >> reporter: in the shadow maryland state house, a fire breaks out and a clerk realizes it's not something to ignore. >> someone said, there's smoke on the street.

he went and grabbed the extinguisher and sprayed in between the two buildings. the firefighters are concerned because of the void between the two structures. >> when the fire gets there, you can't see it until it burns through and with the structures, it will be several buildings long. >> a woman is brought to tears and another woman comforts her. >> the historic district is so beautiful and when a fire happens, it's so tragic. >> reporter: a similar fire took place several years ago and it's in a void space and that ruined buildings and the firefighters were concerned about this one and they got it under control quickly. back to you on tv hill. thank you, to you, suzanne,

overnight, five separate shootings broke out. all of the shootings happened between 11:00 last night and 2:00 this morning. this is the scene of a double shooting in west baltimore around 11:00 last night. one victim is dead and the other is in the hospital and expected to survive. among the incidents, three were fatal and two related to home invasions. >> we do know that none appeared to be related to each other, but three are related to illegal drug activity. we have good leads in a few of the investigations and we've identified a person of interest. >> and the shootings took place in several areas of the city including east and northwest baltimore and they're increasing the police presence in the area. andean new development -- and a new development of a

principal found dead. he died of a gunshot wound and tonight, they found his car on 4th street in south east washington. he was the principal at shaw middle school for two years. a giant cloud of scroll -- volcanic ash has halted flights for two days so far. and terrell brown reports for wjz on the number of people affected by the ash. >> reporter: the volcano just keeps spewing ash. it's not expected to stop any time soon. and the huge plume is forcing countries all across europe to extend to fly restrictions across the weekend. the clouds could be

catastrophic to jet engines. >> it's unprecedented in england and london to find ourselves affected by vol cane nor, it's unusual. >> reporter: all around, the story's the same, canceled flights and exhausted travelers. three or four more days on the travels and it's a big disruption. >> reporter: pro can't a-- president obama can't avoid the problem. he'll remain in washington after canceling his trip to poland for the funerals. and airlines and travel agencies are working overtime to deal with the hundreds of thousands of stranded passengers and what's complicated it's not clear when it will end. hundreds of europeans going to run in the marathon monday may miss the events. >> they're either sitting in the airport now and their flight was canceled out right.

>> reporter: this is the worst disruption other than times of war. though president obama wasn't among them, 100,000 joined together in poland honoring the 96 people killed in last week's plane crash. [somber music] >> the coffins of the polish president and his wife were placed side by side while their daughter and the president's twin brother mourned. the names of the 96 lost were read. hundreds of russian adoptions may be on hold. this after a mother sends her 8- year-old son back all alone. >> can i have a juice box,

mommy? >> reporter: this family is full, there's a 9-year-old, a 7- year-old and a 6-year-old and a 5-year-old. their parents adopted them from russia nearly three years ago. >> what are we doing. you kind of calm down and you get a feeling like, is it the right thing. now, they want one more, the 15- year-old sister who's still in russia. we can't leave her there and the teens age out and they're kind of just sent on their way and their out look is grim. >> reporter: and the option may not be smooth. some are calling for a freeze in all american adoptions after an 8-year-old boy was sent back to the country by his american mother. next week, state department workers are going to russia for talks and some agencies are concerned. >> familys are concerned as to whether or not they'll be able

to proceed with the plans to adopt from russia. i understand the concern and have been giving them frequent updates as to what we're hearing. >> they haven't received specific words about the adoption and they're proceeding with the paper work. >> she knows that we want to come and get her and she was very receptive and that was good. and now it's a matter of time. >> before they're together again. according to the russian education ministry, 1800 children were adopted in the u.s. last year. and it's been a cooler weekend so far with plenty of breeze. taking a live look outside right now, it's only going to be chillier as we move into tonight. tim williams is live with an updated look at the first warning weather radar.

>> well, hello, jessica, good evening, we had a comfortable day and the sun was out and it was comfortable. we had chilly air settling in over the region, this is what we had across the state. we had 53 degrees and the temperature is -- well, we had west wind at 23 miles per hour and the showers are to the north and the front that moved through overnight brought us thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and evening and into this morning in some parts of the morning. what we have is red flag warnings in effect. the national weather service issued this and the winds are high and the grounds are dry. it creates the potential for fire hazards spreading quickly. as for all of the areas down along southern maryland and the eastern and western shore of the bay. that's something we'll deal with until 9:00 tonight. we'll talk about the forecast and how long the temperatures stay this cold in a few

minutes. discovery is heading home from the international space station. it undocked this morning after a week and a half long mission to replace supplies. and only three shuttle flights remain and the discovery crew relished this flight. they'll return on monday. a brutal beating -- chicago police officers come under fire after assaulting an unarmed man and how the department is dealing with it. a young boy pays for his own heart surgery and they're off, an unusual start at pimlico. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

police officers are under scrutiny after another officer is caught beating an unarmed man. one is beating the man 15 times after he surrenders. it happened last month in steamwood, illinois. the officer faces charges and he's telling the officers always assume everything they do will be taped. two iraq war veterans get into trouble at home after allegedly fire bombing the army reserve head quarters in pennsylvania.

the suspects both 20 years old and members of the national guard threw cocktails into the armory. they had recently refused to be drug tested and they were arrest after the fire. now, they face several charges. a 9-year-old boy in georgia paid for his own surgery by selling autographed copies of his story on ebay. he needed money and he posted the stories on ebay and he's sold almost 1300 copies. and he made a speedy recovery and he'll return to school next week. the idea of spring cleaning is ancient. it's a time to get your house in order inside and out. now, as mike schuh is

the flag is flying out there and we have winds at 35 miles per hour today. steady at 23 to 25. it's been a breezy, windy day. it's comfortable and the temperatures are in the 60s. down from 83 -- 84 degrees yesterday. it knocked the temperatures down 20 degrees yesterday. and the average for this time of the year is 65. we were just a tad below that. nowhere near the record of 93

set in 2002. clicking a little too fast. 57 in d.c. and 61 in ocean city and 53 at the airport. winds at the airport and the winds at reagan national at 20 miles per hour and easton as well. double digits around the entire state around the northwest and that's bringing in cooler air settling in for us over the next five days or so. it will take a while for the temperatures to reflect a shift in the wind. we'll be below average for the weekend week and the wind gusts over the next hour or so. 33 miles per hour wind gusts and 21 in oakland and 26 on the shore. we're tapping into cooler air around us. 45 around detroit and 57 in chicago and these are areas where the temperatures were 20 degrees highier. that's allowing the colder air

to move in and this time of the year, it's chilly and the front is clearing the area and the rain to the south and east. we're seeing more and more clear skies and we'll see more clearing tonight. we have a bit of cloud cover tonight and we have the low pressure system from the north and north east and that will funnel in low pressure from the area. that disturbance is keeping the clouds in play. we'll start to see temperatures gradually climbing into the week. we'll be warmer, but not like the last few day. winds on the bay in the northwest to 10 to 15 knots and the next high tide at 9:34. flosh tonight, 39 degrees and colder. and we'll call it colder and
