a woman will serve no additional jail time for starving her child. the mother of a woman who starved her child to death will be released from jail. suzanne collins is on the scene. good afternoon, suzanne. >> reporter: she's been in jail for two years and she did successfully testify against the cult members convicted of murder. today, she gets a suspended sentence and she must complete a treatment program. >> reporter: it's a bizarre case involving a cult. a young mother doesn't protest when the cult leader says her child should be dehighed food. the boy died of starvation.

now, the prosecutor changed her mind, she believes that the mother was also a victim. >> in the beginning, i think i shared the view of a lot of people, we should just lock her up and throw away the key. any mother allowing her child to starve to death must be a cold and unfeeling person. >> reporter: she testified against the cult leader and they were convicted of second degree murder earlier this year. after two years in jail, she'll get out on five years probation. >> she's been brainwashed and these three are manipulative murders and she's realizing, she was sucked in and duped by these people. >> reporter: she'll be going to a live in treatment facility that's christian based out of state. if she competes this, she won't have to return the treatment. her mother is unable to speak

with her while in the cult never gave up on her daughter. >> it's my child and everyone would say the same thing. she shouldn't be in there. you know, under the circumstances and everything, but the law is the law. >> reporter: there's an od condition of her probation, that's something that she asked for, that's if your child is resurrected from the dead, the conviction will go away. from the courthouse, back to you on tv hill. and the judge is going to call her back to court in july. baltimore county police are investigating an armed robbery. six or seven robbers kicked in a man's home yesterday. he says one had a gun and the rest were armed with knives. they stole a play station game console and several had red

bandannas. the family members of a fire cadet who died during a training will move on with a lawsuit. >> reporter: she was with the firefighters for three months when she died. she was unable to get out of the house and the situation deteriorated. the lawsuit alleged that -- she did not have an adequate evacuation plan. her clothing and breathing apparatus didn't protect her proply. >> and the fire chief resigned after that exec size -- exercise. >> her mother is asking for $35 million for her two children. an afternoon of fun at the patuxent river turns fatal for a teen.

the dive teens recovered the body of a 15-year-old. the witnesses said he was playing with friends near the river and he dove into the water and never resurfaced. 11 are missing after an explosion off of the coast of louisiana. the coast guard is searching the gulf of mexico hoping to spot a lifeboat. >> reporter: grounded no more. planes over europe are grounded no more. the ash cleared -- >> well, i'm sorry, that was the wrong story. the oil rig is under fire and now to the air travel story, it's getting better this noon. 20,000 flights were given the all clear from take off. and the cloud of volcanic ash

a rescue as a fishing boat sinked off of the coast of alaska. another crewman died before the help arrived and the three surviving crew members suffered hypothermia. no word on why the 75-foot vessel began sinking. for the first time, the pope publicly commented on the sex abuse scandal. he traveled to meet with eight who said they were abused by priests. the pope says he shares the suffering of the victims and the vatican says they'll do all they can to bring abusive priests to justice and protect the children. a school employee involved in a web cam spying says that

the coast guard is still searching the gulf of mexico

hoping to spot a lifeboat. the coast guard are searching for 11 workers. the deep water is rising over 50 miles off of the coastline, it was still burning after the blast that happened 10:00 tuesday night. officials say it's too early to say what caused it. >> it's leaning badly, the coast guard is don certain -- concerned it will fall over. there were 126 people on the drilling flat and most escaped safely and some were air lifted to land and environmental teams are standing by, ready to get the cleanup work once the fire's out. the deep water horizon was built in 2001. it's owned by a drilling company and it's under contract to bp. joel brown, cbs news. and at this point, no one can say lounge it will take to
