yesterday. >> all right. admiral, thank you so much. now here's maggie. and now to wall street and the debate over financial reform. senate democrats plan to hold a test vote on monday for a package of new regulations while yesterday in new york city, president obama urged bankers to support reform. and he criticized some of the ways they do business. >> a free market was never meant to be a free license to take whatever you can get however you can get it. >> let's bring in cbs news chief washington correspondent and host of "face the nation" bob schieffer. good morning, bob. >> good morning. >> tmd it would seem the democrats have all the leverage. the public is fed up with wall street and the investigation into fraud involving goldman sachs has fueled that. do democrats have anything to lose by going for a vote on monday even though the republicans have said they'd like a little bit more time to work on a compromise? >> no, they have absolutely nothing to lose. they want to get this out and get it on the table as quickly as possible. they think this is the time to
7:09 am
picture republicans as trying to protect fat cat bankers as it were. you know, it's one thing to oppose health care reform, but on this case, i think most people would agree that doctors are more popular than bankers, especially at this particular time when you've had this lawsuit filed against goldman sachs. so democrats want to move on this as quickly as they can. there's a lot of politics on both sides in this. let face it, you and i, we look down at our wrist watch and it tells us what the time is and what day of the month it is. on a politician's watch, there's only one date on there, and that is election day, november 2010. so they're all thinking about that. i think that the democrats will be able to get the votes to stop a filibuster next weekend to begin debate. a lot of things will happen between that and getting a final vote on all of this, but i think
7:10 am
they'll be able to get it. they just need one republican vote. i think in the end they'll probably do that. >> but they're reportedly so close to reaching something that they both can agree on. why not hold out just a little bit longer to give the public the sense that for once this is a true bipartisan bill? >> well, i think there are reports that they're very, very close. but, you know, these things have a way of -- they'll be 99% done but then there's that 1% that is always the crucial thing that's so hard to get. i think leader reid thinks he has nothing to lose politically by trying to do this now. republicans will take the same tact. but again, i think maybe not monday, but sometime next week, they will be able to clear the way to at least start this debate. >> at least one republican john mccain said he doesn't understand why the senate is debating derivatives trading when so many people are in danger of losing their home. do you think that a lot of
7:11 am
people will buy into that argument? >> well, i think it all kngoes back to overall reform. this whole house in crisis and what happened in that had to do with derivative trading. obviously most of us who are not involved day to day in financial dealingses s s on wall street deal with credit swaps and all that kind of thing, but this is part of the problem of what's wrong here and i think the congress will act on that. john mccain we also have to remember is involved in a very difficult primary campaign against a candidate backed by the tea party out there in arizona. so that may have something to do with what he said. >> looking down at the watch and seeing election day. i got it. bob schieffer, thank you so much. and we will look forward to more discussion on financial reform and the economy this sunday on "face the nation" with bob. please check your local
