numbers for us. >> reporter: good evening, don. keep in mind, this is one of many polls to come. but the new rasmussen poll shows that mr. o'bal maly -- o'malley's lead has been cut in half since january. and that is within the four percentage margin of err. >> a new poll shows incumbent democrat martin o'nally's -- o'malley's lead shrinking. 47% to ehrlich's 44%. 2% of the -- want another candidate. 7% are undecided. >> reporter: it foreshadows a race that could be as tight, maybe as nasty as four years ago. >> you can see, that's a pretty consistent pattern. >> reporter: but johns hopkins political scientist matthew crenton says he doesn't have much faith in this particular

poll. >> the rasmussen poll continues to trend toward republicans. and this is not just a short time. it's a long period of time. >> reporter: republicans have seats in massachusetts, and virginia. >> ehrlich's campaign says we have a policy of not commenting on polls. >> i welcome him to this race. >> reporter: o'malley's campaign says he expects the campaign to be hard fought. among women, he holds a 19% lead. among men, it's ehrlich by 17%. and among those unaffiliated with any party, ehrlich is up 40%. >> this, by all accounts, is a bad year for democrats. but it's a long time until november. >> the rematch is on. >> and a lot of people know these candidates. they have very passionate feelings about them. the poll bore that out. as for mr. o'malley.

22% view him very favorably. but 24% have very unfavorable views of him. as for former governor ehrlich, 27% have strong favorable views. and 27% have strong unfavorable views. mr. o'malley will officially kick off his campaign with a series of events. >> thank you very much, mike. we'll give you one more set of numbers. the poll also says 50% approve of o'malley's job performance. 58% disapprove. an anne arundel county officer opens fire. attacking a woman, after a stun gun didn't stop him. the officers came across 21- year-old richard malcheski, jumping on a woman's van. after trying to stop him twice, the officer opened fire. he will be charged after being released from the hospital. bail is denied for two young men, accused of killing a 72-year-old vietnam veteran during a robbery.

his family is relieved tonight. the suspects are in custody. wjz is live at city police headquarters. gigi barnett with more on the suspects for us. >> reporter: after the police search and now two teens behind -- behind bars. the victim's family says this is just beginning. news of because now, they have to attend not one but two criminal chime trials. >> reporter: 18-year-old troy taylor and 19-year-old michael hunter face a slew of charges. among them, first-degree murder handgun position and assault. after weeks of tense manhunt, police found hunter. and taylor turned himself in. they had few leads. but the community rallied to help. >> a lot of people coming forward with just basic information that helped lead us on the right path. >> then they visited bowman's family with the news. >> all i could say is thank

3-year-old nathan fans is in a foster home tonight. the mother is arrested. police are looking for two associates of hers, who apparently left the child at a church unharmed. nathan's grandparents flew in today. they have booked open-ended tickets in hopes of getting custod -- custody of the child. people gather to celebrate the life and accomplishments of archbishop william borders. as mike schuh reports, borders was remembered for his compassion and warmth. >> reporter: this is the archbishop's final mass at the cathedral. his family in from indiana and florida, brother and sister in the front row. arriving outside, his neighbors at the retirement home where he lived. >> nobody had a smile like his. nobody. >> be kind to everybody. talk to everybody. had time for everybody. >> he visited my son when he had a kidney taken out. >> at the mass, leaders from

expect to happen saturday, sunday, maybe even into early next week. tim? >> well, a very large storm system moving intowr direction. -- into our direction. the first sign will be that the clouds will increase tonight into tomorrow. and by tomorrow afternoon, we could see a chance for widely scattered showers. by tomorrow into sunday, we could be seeing scattered showers. the weather advances here. and we start to see some improvement. and the temperatures take a hit as well. bob will have your details in the forecast economic up. at this minute, the second night of the nfl draft is under way. and the ravens are poised to make their first pick soon. after a late-night trade with denver. wjz is live at ravens headquarters if owings mills. stan saunders with a look at some prospects on the ravens' radar. stan? >> hey, mary. you know, a day ago, it was surprise, surprise, surprise, when the ravens decided to go on a different strategy in the first round of the draft.

now they have, shortly after 6:00, they'll be having opportunity to make their top picks during today's second round. now, normally, after the first round, you know, ravens farns are talking about -- fans are talking about how this was the first pick. but there was no first pick this year, as the ranks have decided more is better later in the draft. >> reporter: while the first round draftees get all of the attention in the headlines, the backbone of any successful team revolves around the lower pick. ravens' all pro fullback ron mcclane. and ray rice selected in the second round. now, this year, the ravens have two second round picks, after they dealt their first round selection to denver in return for a second, third, and fourth round pick. >> with our team, as it is right now, and the way the board is stacked. i think we have been sitting here, saying, let's get more picks. >> draft picks are a little more like currency. and we have more money now to play tomorrow. so i think that, yeah, we're

excited. it's just there's a little bit of uneasiness. because we don't know who we're going to get. >> reporter: with those picks, rob gronkowski as the apparent heir. washington and ladairis web are recovering. ravens fans are confident that the team is making the right choices. >> given that they've studied the game and taken into account for what they have. i think they'll do a god job with it. >> it's a little anti-climatic. you want it to go around so you can see what they would do with it. but you trust what they do. >> as long as we get another defensive lineman, cornerback, wide receiver, i'll be pretty happy with the results. >> reporter: well, barring any more trades and never rule that out. ravens have three picks tonight. and four tomorrow. so apparently, there are some guys in the later rounds that are maybe just as good as first rounders. so we'll see what happens.

>> one way to show that faith and science are not opposed. >> reporter: maryland scientists signed on. research will determine if it works. alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> while the university of maryland will be the lead research. senator barbara mikulski says she is not going anywhere. i'm not retiring. i'm here today to announce my candidacy for re-election to the united states senate. >> that was earlier today, as she announced, she is running for another term. she will have to fend off four challengers. she was first elected in 1986. and this would be her fifth term in the senate. the metro system has come up with a plan to close a $150 million budget deficit. metro is scaling back on proposed service cuts.

fares will jump 15 cents during the more peak travel times. bus fares and parking fees will also see some hikes. it is just the news consumers want to hear with summer approaching. starting in june. bge customers will see an almost 10% drop in their power bills. andrea fujii explains, even more cuts may be on the way. >> ronald stewart just paid his $400 bge bill. starting june 1st, he and other residential bge customers will see an 8.4% drop in their rate. >> it will put gas in my truck. >> that means a typical customer who uses 1,000 kilowatt hours per month, with $150 billion will instead pay $145. >> bge says wholesale energy

costs. >> because of the declines and the way bge purchases power, customers are beginning to see those declines reflected in their bill. >> reporter: the rate reduction will continue through may 31st, 2007. -- 2011. last october, customers saw a 2% reduction. and bge says they expect further cuts. we certainly do believe that prices will continue trending downward. so certainly there is the possibility that our customers will see even more decline. >> still, some customers are skeptical. >> it sounds good. but i know they'll get it back somehow. >> reporter: but most agree in this tough economy, any little bit helps. >> andrea fujii, wjz eyewitness news. >> bge says its 1.2 million customers could save a total of $160 million with this latest cut. which is great news. >> for all of those energy tips. >> everybody out there has been

beautiful, friday evening. overlooking. it looks like the new developments in harbor -- bell lasher -- harbor, along key highway. >> you're not going to hear complaints about today. it's autopsy around low pressure and warm front approaching. from the west and southwest. i expect to see light rain in the region. not a lot but light rain. take a look at temps around the area. 70 here. 74 in hagerstown. ocean city, the coolest spot. 58 for the winds off the water. and 68 in pax river. dew points very low. right now, winds continue to be out of the north. bringing in continued dry air.

overnight tonight, probably going to stay on the very, very dry side. it's going to take a while for those clouds that are moving in from the southwest to moisten up enough to give us any showers that will reach the ground. the radars may show some rain tomorrow afternoon. may take a while because it's awfully dry out there. as i said, even though that system will be approaching us from the south/southwest. there you see it, lined up with clouds from north carolina westward into indiana, illinois, into the low pressure that is sitting over kansas. to the west, cold air coming back on the west side. snow in the rockies today. some areas picked up as much as a foot of snow. just west of denver. some of our northwestern suburbs, around 8,000 feet, pick up wet flakes as we speak. further south and east. warm, summery conditions. moisture moving off the gulf of mexico. warm air. dryer air. and because of light showers. it's just light stuff. and overnight tonight, generally clear.

more than a dozen top staffers were looking at pornography instead of keeping an eye on the nation's troubled financial system. joel brown reports for wjz from washington, with more on what was uncovered. >> reporter: the securities and exchange commission workers were being paid to police the financial markets. instead, some spent hours surfing for hard-core porn on their government computers. >> our country is in a shambles. and they're dog -- doing their own thing. >> reporter: 17 people caught were senior staffers, making as much as $220,000 a year. worn manner attorney spent up -- one attorney spent up to eight hours a day, watching porn. he burned the porn onto dvds, and stored them in his office. and an s.e.c. accountant was blocked more than 16,000 times from visiting explicit websites. the report says he still found a way around the s.e.c.'s web filters. snairs being ask -- >> they're being paid to do a

job for the people. and when you lose sight of that, they have to be dealt with appropriately. >> the agency says it's already suspended or fired some of the staffers. one has resigned. and another is serving a two two-week suspension. >> reporter: in a statement, republican congressman darrell issasaid they were distracted when they should have been overseeing the growing problems in the system. >> anan s.e.c. official said some of the zit simp -- criticism is overblown and unfair. that less than 1% of staffers were to blame. but a public agency in the midst of a scandal isn't helped when a few of their employees were not using their computers to watch the market.

>> about 6,000 men admit to looking at online porn while at work. according to a survey. moments ago, the coast guard called off its search for 11 missing workers, missing since the explosion earlier this week. the oil rig, located about 15 miles off the louisiana coastline in the gulf of mexico, exploded into flames on tuesday. yesterday, the rig sank into the gulf. crews are monitoring the rig to be sure nothing spills out in the future. montgomery county police say at least two people were involved in the killing of a washington, d.c. middle school principal. brian betts was found dead at his silver springs home last week. detectives believe more than one suspect may be involved in his death. his suv was found after his death in washington, d.c. and investigators believe the apparent theft was related to the murder. an eastern shore pastor is charged with sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy. 39-year-old jerry bartly of chestertown was arrested and

charged with six counts of sodomy along with sex abuse and child abuse charges. police say bartly had been abusing the boy since christmas. he's being held on $500,000 bond. former vice presidential candidate sarah palin. testifies in court against a man accused of hacking into her personal e-mail account. >> hello. how are you? >> reporter: sarah palin testified against a 22-year-old man on trial for allegedly hacking into her personal e- mail account. >> it's not right. it's not legal. it's not fair or decent. >> reporter: with her husband by her side, the former vice presidential candidate traveled to the courthouse in knoxville. the suspect was accused of hacking into her e-mail account while she was campaigning with john mccain in 2008. palin said the intrusion forced her to stop e-mailing her family. >> a mama wants to communicate

with her kids, especially when she can't with with -- be with them. so it was a big darn deal. >> reporter: the accused hacker revealed bristol palin's cell phone number and she testified that she got harass said. some say it was no more than a college prank. >> i don't think an illegal action like this was a prank. when you consider how impacting it was on a presidential election, it went beyond a prank. >> he faces up to 50 years in prison if convicted on identity theft and mail fraud. but palin says it's up to the court to decide the punishment. >> reporter: palin's husband may also be called to testify. ford motor company announces a recall but not for safety reasons. ford is recalling 33,000 midsized vehicles and suvs to fix front seat recliners. the recall affects some

>> reporter: it may look like a mint and taste like one. but this isn't candy. camel orbs are dissolvable nicotine tablets. and while they are sold only in the tobacco section of stores, parents are still fuming. >> i think it's wrong for a cigarette company to do this. to make anything that will resemble candy to make kids want it. >> reporter: this young mother says her 3-year-old tried to grab her pack of orbs. >> the fact that it's nicotine and i don't know what it could do to her, we rushed to the hospital. >> reporter: they are test marketing the product in portland, oregon, indianapolis, and columbus, ohio. cigarette makers may be turning to new products, drips and toothpick-like devices. a new school looked at a variety of these products, which can cause unintentional tobacco poisoning in children. it warns, in light of the novelty and potential harm of

dissolvable nicotine products, authorities are advised to study these products. >> even one milligram or one pellet can sicken a child. as much as seven or 13 pellets could cause severe toxic effects, including potentially death. >> reporter: r.j. reynolds disputes that and points out the majority of child nickpine poison -- nicotine poisoning still comes from consuming cigarettes. >> adults should ensure that young children do not have access to tobacco products, including dissolvable tobacco products. >> reporter: orbs are sold in child-resistant packages. but keeping children away from something that looks like candy may be easier said than done. >> and harvard researchers say even though the packaging is made childproof, adults may still leave packages open where children can find them. controversy behind some ads

music hall. hi, stan. >> hello there, ladies and gentlemen. let me tell you, the second round of the nfl draft 2010 is under way. and the ravens have not chosen yet. but i can tell you right now, oakland is on the clock with the 41st choice. and so far, eight players have been chosen. now, there's still a lot of good, available players on the board. in fact, one of them is tight- end rob groncow ski -- gronkowski. the ravens have this catching behemoth. and he could be heir apparent to todd heap. we don't know who they'll pick. but this this is one guy to keep in mind. meanwhile, we'll have the update as soon as it comes with the ravens. and fantastic workouts in february. passed over in round 2. and right now, he's also still one of those who is available at the moment. so we'll give you an update on what happens with bruce, coming up at 11:00 tonight.
