but crews found no trace of the man or his boat. derek valcourt has more on the call for help that has left a lot of unanswered questions tonight. derek? >> the coast guard said they think the distress call was the real deal. >> with one radio call for help, a quiet saturday morning, on middle river, took an alarming turn. >> what is your position and nature? >> i'm in middle river. i've got three kids on board. 42. i'm 45. and the boat is taking on water. >> caller said he was taking on water. and told the coast guard, from the location, he could watch the riverwatch restaurant in marina. >> the boys watched in one. i'm sitting here. i'm trying to get some on. i'm taking on water. there's something leaking in the bottom of the hull. >> reporter: soon after, radio communication went silent. >> reporter: within 10 minutes of that call, a commercial boat was in the area.

they found nothing. maryland helicopters were searching the sky in minutes. and by 40 minutes, boats like this were scouring the water. >> we had a boat in the water. >> reporter: but after more than eight hours of serp -- searching, involving helicopters, boats and investigators on land, no one was found. and more puzzling, no reports of anyone missing. so the search was called off. >> that's why it's so important that if you call a distress call, and if you recover it, you relay the call back to the coast guard and let us know. >> prank calls do happen. but for now, they say this call wasn't one of them. >> reporter: now, the coast guard said they are still waiting for more information on this case. they're asking anyone who has information to call the coast guard. they say for now, it is still an open and active case and will be until they hear what happened. back to you. >> such a strange story, derek. thank you.

prank distress calls can cause you a $250,000 fine and up to six years in prison. police say one man could be linked to as many as five robberies in one baltimore county. denise has more on what we know about the suspect who is still on the run. >> the latest robbery tied to the suspect happened just yesterday on carroll island road in essex. these are surveillance pictures of that suspect. in some of the robberies, he wears a woman's wig. sky eye chopper 13 was over an apartment complex near the scene of the robbery. police believe the suspect was there shortly after the crime. but he's did manage to get away. baltimore county police say the suspect started this string of robberies back in january 2009. >> many of these robberies took place in banks. anyone with information about the suspects is eligible for the reward. a baltimore man is convicted for the 1999 murder of a teenager.

ernist rivers -- ernest rivers fatally stabbed jerrisha burton. rivers was convicted after a one-week trial. he will be sentenced on july 7th. two long-time foes are set for a rematch. governor martin o'malley sets off his re-election campaign. wjz is live in waldorf, where a rally is now under way. political reporter pat warren is with the governor and has more on his message to marylanders tonight. pat? >> reporter: moving marylanded for is the governor's message to marylanders. and he's making his third announcement here in waldorf. >> governor o'malley's visit to waldorf had more of a garden party. scom paired to a fanfare. governor o'malley and first lady katie set the stage for what is expected to be a spirited gubernatorial campaign. beginning with two days across the state to make his presence

known everywhere. >> we're all in this together. and so we're coming to our home bases, if you will, baltimore, where i had the pleasure and honor to serve the people of baltimore, prince george's, where lieutenant governor anthony brown lives, and represented in the legislature. and rockville, where i grew up as a boy. and we're going to be trying to get to as many parts in our state as possible. >> reporter: and it might help o'malley move forward in the polls, which shows a hotly contested race against former governor bob ehrlich. not that o'malley is paying attention to that. >> i don't know. those things go up and down. and i'll let the pundits and the radio disc jockeys comment about that sort of process stuff. i'm focused on moving maryland forward to get us out of this recession and create jobs. >> reporter: it's job creation and opportunities that o'malley will focus on this campaign. >> there are some who run for

it is not clear how long it will take. the death of a young mother at one of baltimore's busiest intersections is calling for action. mike hellgren reports on new steps being taken. more than 35,000 cars pass through this intersection every day. and one lawmaker says something needs to be done. >> little darlin denary plays with his dad. his mom pushed his stroller out of the way. an oncoming pickup truck. as they crossed the intersection. they were trying to get to the crosswalk. police say when the truck hit her, she died a few hours later. and now, chairman john oshevski tells wjz, he's writing letters to the mta and the state's highway administration. >> the bus stop is close to the road. it's just an accident waiting to happen. they could look at ways to take the bus stop, to move them

back, to try to get the pedestrians farther away from the street. >> wjz cameras captured several people running to catch the bus. across several lanes of traffic. >> seems like i'm putting my life on the line. do you feel like sometimes you're taking your life in your hands? >> absolutely. >> i work in whitemarsh. and i come home this way. and it's really bad. >> so even when you have the walk symbol, as i do right now, cars don't stop. that car didn't stop for me, even though i do have the white walk signal. that seems like it keeps going. >> i have had some close encounters. i'm not going to lie. >> the walk only lasts six seconds. >> public safety is one of the most important issues we dole with day in and day out. >> bobby maldonado loves her son. she'll never get to see him grow up. a tragedy that some believe was preventable. >> somebody put a picture here at the intersection. she was just 17 years old.

in rosedale, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. >> and police say wayne casaldi from essex stopped to help her and her son. charges are pending the completion of their investigation. the storm clouds are gone. and we have some sunshine back in maryland. lots of clouds there. outside tonight as well. live look outside right now. dry and breezy afternoon. as we move into a cooler night. but we are moving closer to a big warmup. wjz is live with first warning weather. bob turk and meteorologist bernadette woods have our updated forecast. we'll start with bob. we've got about a 36 to 48 hours. cool temps to deal with. and then we'll talk about the warmup. radar now. we have clouds around. down to the south, a couple of sprinkles along the coast. they have finally cleared out. for the most part, areas are going to clear out tonight. and because of clearing skies, low to a point. dry air. we do have some advisories that will be going into effect. bernadette woods in the outback

with a look at what we expect to happen. perhaps overnight. bernadette? >> that's what we're looking at for tonight. i want to show you the graphic. frost advisories go into effect from 2:00 to 9:00 a.m. and that is for a good portion of the state here. far west, we see a freeze warning out for allegheny county. and the cool air is going to linger into tomorrow. sunshine in the day. and clouds building up in the afternoon. the thing is, temperatures only topping out in the low 60s. that is before the warmup kicks in. by thursday, we're up to 70 degrees. 80s for the end of the week. and we'll have that forecast coming up in a bit. right now, back inside. mississippi tornado that claimed the lives of 10 people has also had a devastating impact on survivors. don teague reports for wjz on the rebuilding process that is proving to be physically and emotionally challenged. >> heartbreak in yasu city, where sherry carpenter still can't believe how destructive

the tornado that shredded mississippi on saturday really was. >> the kid his a trampoline somewhere. >> reporter: carpenter's three grandchildren were in this house when the tornado picked it up and smash today to the ground. -- smashed it to the ground. [ crying ] >> oh, my gosh. >> the boys survive. because their mother, 30-year- old nikki bradshaw carpenter, covered them with this mattress, then laid on top of them to protect them. she was found dead, still on top of the mattress. >> she saved those kids and gave her life. you know? but she was -- that was nikki. because those kids came first. >> reporter: they're is so much loss in yasu city. sharon moore was supposed to move in this week to her first home. >> everything is demolished. >> reporter: now she and many others will have to rebuild, devastate bide what forecasters say was an ef4 tornado.

with winds more than 160 miles per hour that left a 97-mile- long pathful destruction, lost homes and lives. >> she was just the best mom ever. i have no doubt. she saved those boys. >> the national weather service said tornado winds measured at 160 miles per hour, along much of the path. put that into perspective, the scale used to measure hurricane intensity, tops off with the worst storms at 155 miles per hour. >> well, still ahead on wjz's eyewitness news at 5:00. government chaos. airgs -- eggs thrown. smoke bombs. not a riot. but a meeting of parliament. what sparked it all. one of the retail areas targeted claims a sex discrimination against wal- mart. buckle up. i'll show you the latest attraction. it is all about the latest need for speed.

wal-mart has been fighting a mass sex discrimination case. yesterday, a ruled the case could move forward. this could be the biggest discrimination lawsuit in history. >> a class action lawsuit against the retail giant can proceed to trial. the suit filed in 2001 by six former employees on behalf of hundreds of thousands of women, argues that the company is guilty of gender discrimination. >> i've seen a lot of good women get promoted over. i've seen bad men get promoted. >> reporter: wal-mart employs more than 1.4 million people at

803 stores across the u.s. it also keeps exhaustive records, which were used by the plaintiffs to boms tertheir case -- tbols tertheir case. -- bolster their case. >> and those records show that while women are two-thirds of the employees of wal-mart, they only hold one-third of the management jobs. >> reporter: wal-mart is an excellent place for women to work and fosters female leadership. while attorneys for the women say they still face an uphill fight, monday's decision was a victory for them. >> this case will show it doesn't matter how big you are, you still have to follow the law. >> wal-mart says it will appeal the decision. the case which has been going for nine years could possibly end up in court. here's sharon gibala live at wjz traffic control. >> the good news is, we've finally cleared up that accident. unfortunately, we still have a

bit of a delay. there's a live look on the inner loop. it's still slow between 895 and 70 on the inner loop. about a 16-minute delay there. average speed of 23 miles per hour. as far as an accident goes. some of them at pulaski highway. reisterstown at clark. west fayette at mlk. and west baltimore at north mlk. mlk not doing so well. meantime, one in an accident. and 95 north and southbound delays now there in the southwest side of the beltway. you can see the sensors there at 9 and 32 miles an hour. there's a look at your speed sensors. your drive time on the west side of the beltway, you can see, as slow as 31 miles an hour. there's a live look at 95, running a little slow there on the inner loop. everything running smoothly on 95, closer to the beltway, and the west side, slow to 895 to 70. remember, wjz 13 is always on.

for traffic information any time, you can always log onto wjz.com. back over to you. >> thank you so much, sharon. breaking news. sky eye chopper 13 over the scene. captain mike perry with more. >> we have a fire at westview mall. this is at the roz store -- ross store. a large electrical panel in the rear of the store in the exterior, caught fire, as you can see the smoke and flames scorched the side of the building. the fire did not extend inside. there were no injuries at this point. fire crews requested bge. there are no injuries. back to you. a new boat tour at the inner harbor is going to get your attention. the sea dog cruise line is launching this week in baltimore. and today, the captain took me for a spin. >> reporter: buckle up. that's what the captain of the sea dog 3 told me before she gunned it. >> whoo! this is pretty amazing. >> i'm buckled in and holding

on for dear life! >> the open-air speedboat, which seats over 100 passengers is a 70-foot vessel, equipped with turbo-charged engines. it is the latest tour venture to hit the inner harbor. when it slowed down, i talked with the captain. >> how fast does it go? >> 132 knots, which is almost 40 miles an hour. >> that's pretty fast. >> it does. without a windshield it's really fast. >> the sea dog cruise originated in chicago in 1986. baltimore's sea dog speed boat offers 50-minute sightseeing tours leaving the inner harbor. going past fort mchenry. going all the way to the key bridge and back. along the way, tourists get to leave the site. >> how great is this? do you love it? >> it's great. it's going to be great for baltimore. >> why do you think? >> well, i think it's going to offer something fun and exciting for not only the source here in baltimore am but

that will be a nice, cool day to go. right now, it's pretty chilly out there. with a mix of sunshine. only in the upper 50s to the low 60s. except out in oakland. it's a chilly 47 degrees. but you think it's chilly here? right now at mount washington, snowing and 26 degrees. up in northern new hampshire, it's winter still. northwest winds here. 10, 15. as high as 20. down to 3 in ocean city. and 9 in oakland. so the winds will be calming down tonight. we've got the winds because the low pressure offshore now. and it's turning the winds back to the north/northwest. high pressure building. we have a pressure gradient in between. also a pressure moving through the air. southern ohio. that movessed through this afternoon. with clouds and rain down there. it just missed us. got to norfolk area. ocean city, got a couple of sprinkles and showers. there's the snow we talked about. there it is. northern vermont. st. lawrence valley.

getting snow as we speak. northwest winds, cleared out nicely. and later tonight, as we cleared out, winds should die down. and because the winds will be dying down, low dew points, dryer air. certainly a possibility. northwest of the city. of scattered frost and that's why we have advisories north and west of the city. otherwise, kind of breezy again tomorrow. a lot of sunshine. thursday begins the warmup. the winds go back to the south and southwest. big jump in temperatures. believe it or not, we'll be in the 80s this weekend. yeah. northwest winds, 10 to 15. gusts to 25 knots on the bay. and a small craft advisory tomorrow afternoon. bay temp stuck around 58 degrees. that water is nice and cool. tonight, then generally clear. tomorrow, sunshine. kind of breezy. and this time of year, 63. still running 5 or 6 degrees below normal. we'll call it cool. but pleasant afternoon.

it is 5:29. 58 degrees and partly sunny out there tonight. good evening, everybody. thank fist are staying with wjz eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. a baltimore high school student heads to capitol hill. she is lobbying for a cause that could improve the lives of many teenagers. she's asking congress to support the fight against teen pregnancy. >> catonsville high school senior zoe camp is calling on

them. she says more teens are getting pregnant suddenly. >> i'm not here to support a crad cal change -- radical change. i'm just trying to bring attention. it's just a matter of getting people aware of the issue. >> reporter: the girls are student leaders on a group that is intent to reducing teen pregnancy. >> these teenagers that we have, they know their stuff. and they bring their personal experiences to bear. they know the issue inside and out. and i think they do a fabulous job. >> reporter: zoe camp talks about two girls she knew who got pregnant as teenagers and couldn't graduate with the class. only 30% do, and only 4% graduate from college. >> you can't get pregnant if the girl is her period, that you can use plan b instead of

the condom. that you if you -- that if you jump up and down after having sex, you won't get pregnant. >> reporter: the organization is triting to reduce numbers by getting funding from programs that are proven to succeed. >> reporter: next wednesday, the national day to prevent teen pregnancy, teenagers all over the country will participate in awareness activities. and they can also take an informative online quiz. >> reporter: one day, the high school senior hopes to work on an issue that will affect woman, like teen pregnancy. >> reporter: and the group has a web page with more information about teen pregnancy for a link. log onto our website, wjz.com. the murder conviction has been thrown out for a man accused of killing someone over a cell phone. andrew o'toole of the annapolis was convicted in 2007. prosecutors allege that o'toole spot a man to get his-- shot a man to get his cell phone back. right now, police are

searching for a couple involved in the murder of a homeless man in new york city. the man was left to die on the sidewalk as several pedestrians ignored him. jessica is live in the newsroom with the latest in this disturbing case. >> reporter: police say the homeless man saw a man and a woman arguing last week. the man stabbed him and then a couple ran away. surveillance video shows that man stumbling to the ground. several people walked by over a 90-minute period. but no one stopped to help him. someone did stop long enough to take a picture, though. another person rolled his body over but then turned and walked away. it's still unclear whether any of the pedestrians noticed the man's injuries or any blood. vic? >> police say it's not clear who finally called 911. but by the time emergency crews arrived, it was too late. an update we first brought you at 4:00. an international flight from paris to atlanta, carrying 233 people, has been diverted to an

airport in maine. federal air marshals are currently interviewing a passenger who claimed he had a fake pass port and explosives in his luggage. although investigators believe his had passport was authentic. the delta flight landed safely at maine's baiptionor -- bangor international airport. moments of chaos caught on tape. a night bra fight break -- fight breaks out. as lawmakers throw fists, smoke bombs. the jury was sparked by a controversial deal. charlie d'agata has more. >> reporter: ukraine's parliament erupted into a bench- clearing brawl. sfists flew in every direction. eggs rain down on the speaker of the house who could only crouch for shelter and a couple of members of the bodyguard.

to stay in the ukrainian court. they say it's a betrayal of the national interest. and want to kick russia out when the lease expires in 2016. she says the day would go down as a black page in the history of the ukraine. they exchange for a 30% break on natural gas prices. before the punchout in parliament, putin said he was surprised there would be any opposition. >> nobody was objecting on the extension of the stay, he said. the only question was how much we could pay. but opponents call it a sellout at any price. the clashes in kiev spread outside of ukraine's parliament, too. it's a battle being waged both in the hulls of power and on the streets outside them.

charlie d'agata, wjz eyewitness news. >> and analysts say it will trigger a deeper split. the russians seeking east and south and the western region, where nationalist sentiment runs strong. there's been a significant drop in the rate for student payments of loans. transunion says the number of private student loans, 90 days or more past due fell in 2009, reversing a five-quarter trend. the average debt for a target student loan account is about 17,000 -- $17,700. senators on capitol hill grill executives from wall street powerhouse goldman sachs. they say the company bet against its clients in order to profit from the mortgage meltdown in 2008. goldman sacks execs say that

wasn't the case. >> they grilled the executives. >> you're trying to sell a [ bleep ] deal. and it's your top priority. >> reporter: the deal focused on strategy with mortgage investors. the bank took sure positions on -- meaning they made an investment in the value went down. for the conflict, there were no apologies. >> regret to me means something that you feel like you did wrong. and i don't have that. >> reporter: one of the witnesses was the trader at the center of the fcc civil fraud case. fabreese tour is accused of investing in a market that was designed to fail. >> i deny categorically the fcc's allegations. >> there were moments when senators accused the witnesses of dodging their questions. and from both democrats and republicans, judgments against the bank were harsh. >> there's no doubt their

behavior was unethical. >> you had less oversight than a pit boss in las vegas. >> e.l. lloyd will also testify. in his prepared statement, he calls the day the sec accused goldman of fraud one of the worst days in his career. he denies the allegation, but acknowledges to the general public, wall street looks out of control. in wall street, joel brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> meanwhile, the senate is still trying to overhaul the nation's financial regulation system. it hopes new laws will prevent another mortgage crisis from ever happening again. the granddaughter of etiquette expert emily post has died. elizabeth post died at age 89 in florida. post once said, quote, etiquette is meant to smooth the path for people to better relationships. if you've ever drowned your sorrows in chocolate, you're not the only one. a new study finds a link between depression and eating chocolate.
