breaks in this area. the latest is on coldspring lane. and from the chopper 13, you can see just when the break happened, just after 12:30 this afternoon. it was a mess here. crews are on scene now and the reason why this is such a traffic headache is because the 12-inch main broke on coldspring lane which was a detour lane for ar gone drive. and it is shut down because there is bridge construction. so people are being detoured yet again to echodale which is in the other direction. so traffic around here on a friday during rush hour is quite a mess. so voiding -- avoiding this area is the best advice. and as far as repairs. bpw said they are repairing but paving this road again is going to take the most time, which means this will continue to be a traffic delay for quite sometime. reporting live in coldspring lane, kelly mcpherson, wjz news. >> traffic control will have an impact on your commute in a few

minutes. mother baltimore city leader headed to trial. this time it's one of the city council members. and denise has the latest on councilwoman holton. >> she was indicted last year on charges she violated campaign limits and conducting campaign activity outside of the campaign violation. a judge will hear her case october 5th through october 8th. mary. >> denise, thank you. prosecutors argued this month that the dismissed bribery charges against holton should be reinstated and her defense team argued that the campaign finance charges should be dropped. no word on when a rule -- ruling will be. cardinal gibbons is set to close for good in a few days. tonight students, teachers and

parents are preparing. gigi barnett is following the emotional final days at the school. gigi. >> reporter: well students, parents and alumni vowed to fight to keep the school open. but as the days get closer to closing, that fight might be extinguished. the campus at cardinal gibbons catholic school is quiet tonight. teachers are finished packing. the next step for students is finals week and then graduation. after that, gibbons is gone for good. >> it's heartbreaking. it's our last day. it's the end of a legacy. >> reporter: back in march the baltimore archdiocese slated gibbons and others to close. it is the only high school on the shut down list. and it's babe ruth's alma mater. ed win o'brien blames low enrollment and high operating costs at catholic schools nationwide.

>> some of our schools have 70% seats vacant and more empty seats than students. >> i was here for the 10th through the 12th grade. >> reporter: and for alum, disbelief and anger still lingers. >> i'm done. i am a catholic, but i do not believe in the archdiocese. archbishop o'brien has broken so many hearts. >> reporter: in an open letter to student this is week, o'brien explained. he said i am not from baltimore. my fathers and brother did not attend cardinal gibbons or any other catholic high school in this area but this does not prevent me from understanding your loss and great sadness. and all of the students here are hoping find a replacement within 3-5 miles of this school. most of the students say they have been placed at orange schools so far. back to you. >> gigi, thank you. tonight is gibbons prom.

the last one ever at that school. some new details about a deadly crash in anne arundel county. it happened around 10:00 last night at route 100. charles drew, jr., was the passenger in a car when the driver pulled over. the 30-year-old then tried to cross 97 when he was hit by an oncoming car. he was talken to shock trauma where he believed. police believe he was drinking prior to the accident. anger in the gulf states tonight as thick black crude hits beaches. joel brown reports for wjz. video of the spill is fueling outrage. >> reporter: live pictures of the massive under water gusher are feeding anger for gulf coast residents. bp now concedes more oil is flowing from the well than previously disclosed. >> certainly a lack of information that we think that is coming out. >> reporter: there is also growing frustration over why a contingency plan wasn't in place to handle such a massive leak. bp is addressing the media

every day to counter the criticism and allegations of a cover-up. >> this team has been working cooperatively and openly from the start. >> reporter: scientists say that the spill is probably larger than the exxon valdez spill in alaska more than 20 years ago. they fear it could spread to the florida keys and up the east coast. the coast guard is finished deploying booms in alabama, mississippi and parts of florida. the oil is not expected to reach those states for at least the next 72 hours. >> soaplessen -- so please enjoy your weekends. >> reporter: the next effort to stop the flow is call aid top kill. crews will inject mud and cement into the well and that could get underway on tuesday. joel brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> a month's worth of leaking oil could fill enough gallons

of milk jugs for 11300 miles. that's the distance from new york to ben os eyes, argentina and back. and temperatures reaching the mid-80s today. wjz is live with first warning weather bob turk and meteorologist bob williams. and we're going to start with bob. >> it's still there. except close to the water. we do have a few clouds drifting from the region from the front to the west and to the east. those indications to the west, very light sprinkles maybe popping up. there. most of the activity staying to the we have. and it's been breaking up. a lot more rain and showers yesterday. most of this is heading up toward michigan. just some widely scattered stuff across the mountains. so tomorrow and into sunday maybe a few widely scattered showers. certainly not a washout this weekend. but it will be cooler. tim has a look at why that's going to happen.

>> well as bob just mentioned, it will be cooler and that means temperatures closer to normal. we'll start warming up right into next week and near next week near to 90 degrees ago. and the low going up toward the great lakes so we'll experience a bit of rain through the weekend. but not as warm. well that's not a problem because again temperatures are not getting too cold. they'll just be in the mid-70s which is where we would typically be this time of may any way. bob will have your complete updated forecast in a few moments. oysters may have hard shells but their numbers are weak in the bay. they tand at 1% of historic levels. alex demetrick reports that to bring them back needs sweeping change. >> reporter: oysters are an appetizer for most of us. but for some, they are a way of life. clinging to it isn't easy. not with oyster populations

decimated by disease, poor water quality and overfishing. >> there is about 1200 licensed in our county. surcharges were down to about $125. quite a decline. >> reporter: to bring the industry back maryland is betting on change. >> we can create jobs in aqua culture and help this resource grow. >> reporter: right now there are only a handful of oyster farms in maryland. >> massive room for expansion. i would say maryland is probably decades behind most of the other countries in the world and at least 10-15 years behind virginia. >> reporter: to catch up. they plan to lease acres for aqua culture and protect and restock 25% of the state's oyster bars. >> we have to find areas where we can protect them from harvest and allowing the survivors to continue to grow and reproduce and create the next generation. >> reporter: many tried and

been burning since about 3:00 this afternoon. now there are fire personnel still on the scene here. the big issue is northbound i- 90 was closed for a period of 0eu79 97 -- i-97 is backed up and it's extended from croton. so expect major delays as this fire situation continues. and the fire is still burning but apparently it's not a danger to traffic as it goes by. back to you. >> captain mike, thank you. caught on tape, several marylander face felony charges for recording their arrests on camera and others have been intimidated to shut cameras off. that's touched off a legal controversy tonight. wjz is live at city police headquarters. mike hellgren has the fierce debate and what you should do to protect yourself. >> reporter: one state lawmaker has just notified the attorney general that he wants clarity on this issue. it comes down to this.

you can't go into someone's home and record them without their knowledge. but many believe you should be able to record a police officer, a public servant, performing his public duties. >> get off the motorcycle. state police. >> reporter: the man being arrested on this video faces felony charges from maryland state police for recording it on camera. this video of an arrest at the preakness quickly made a play online despite an officer issuing this warning to the person who shot it. >> you need to turn that off. it's illegal to tape anybody's voice or anything else. that's the law in the state of maryland. >> reporter: but is he right? can police stop you from recording their actions like this beating at the university of maryland college park. the aclu says no way. >> for the government to be saying that it has the power to prevent citizens from doing that is profoundly shocking, troubling and in the case of maryland, simply flat out wrong. >> reporter: under maryland law conversations in private cannot

a baltimore county road with a dangerous history. tonight a man is in critical condition after trying to jay walk across liberty road. wjz is live near the scene of that accident. weijia jiang has more on the area. >> reporter: more and more people rush into the middle of the road, completely ignoring the crosswalks and that could be deadly. sky eye chopper 13 shows you emergency crews rescuing 49- year-old harry keane after a car strikes him and from the ground witnesses described the horrific scene. >> as he was running, the car came straight up, he wept in

the air about four feet, hit it on his head and this was just all bloody. >> he was transported to shock trauma where he's currently in critical condition. >> reporter: investigators say he was trying to cross liberty road near milford mill without using a crosswalk. police say the area is notorious for jay walking. cameras captured several walkers charging into traffic and this man who uses the crosswalk when the significant nat said not to. he even puts his hand up to drivers. >> people need to watch themselves, people will hit you. they don't stop. >> reporter: but police say the drivers are usually not doing anything wrong. county stats show in pedestrian related accidents it's the pedestrian's result 82% of the time. >> reporter: two weeks ago county authorities gathered here to araise awareness about pedestrian safety. >> in baltimore county you are for mar likely to die from a traffic accident than as a victim of a homicide. >> reporter: is police urge

pedestrians to stop doing this before it's too late. >> i've learned my lesson after my friend got hit before. i'm like i'm crossing notice crosswalk and that's it. i can't deal with -- it's too dramatic. >> reporter: and baltimore county police say they sent a warning to jay walkers and will start issuing citations. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> police say the driver involved will likely not face any charges. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check on the roads. sharon, we should probably talk about that fire -- that truck fire down in anne arundel county. >> it's been there for a while. and sky chopper 13 flying above it right now. that's 97 northbound at 648. all lanes have been blocked for quite sometime. tractor-trailer fire that went into the woods. at this point there is just smoke. so the main fire is out but it doesn't look like it will be cleared up any time soon. all traffic is being detoured

at route 100. there is quite a backup there. going back beyond benfield boulevard, route 2 richie highway would be the best alternate. now another vehicle fire causing problems on the top side inner loop, just approaching 83, that's blocking. it was blocking two right lanes. but a 34 minute delay back behind that to baltimore national pike. four accidents is the city, he had monson at wheeler, south charles, hartford at montebello tear is. and at waterloo and a crash 29 at route 40. water main break in the city blocking eastbound lanes of cold spring, detour at echo dale there. and slow from 216 to 100. 12 minutes on 95, 95 slowing between eastern and the beltway. a six minute delay there. there is a look at your beltway drive times. north side tough today after two problems in the same area. a 14 mile-per-hour average with a 32 minute drive time between

a warm end of the week with a lot of sunshine. that is about to change. we do have some clouds that will start moving in tonight and they'll be with us a lot over the weekend. we'll see some sun but also probably see some scattered -- widely scattered shower activity. take a look at temps in the region. warm. 86 in the baltimore area. much cooler, ocean city at 72. and oakland at 70. of course up in the mountains, 81 in cumberland and 83 in washington. 84 over in hagers ton. and easton up a little from yesterday in the dew point, at 47 yesterday. winds have come around more to the southeast and tomorrow they'll be predominantly out of the east southeast.

that mean its will be cooler tomorrow. only in probably the low 70s. low to mid-70s. out to the west, the low pressure sitting over kansas and oklahoma with the severe weather has moved up toward chicago. it's kind of strung out and weakening quite a bit. during the day today, a lot of the activity you saw to the west has broken up and we have some clouds and widely scattered showers. most of the activity out west. we do have a risk, as you can see, there is active knit kentucky -- activity in kentucky and across the carolinas. maybe a pop up shower tomorrow. mainly west of the city. maybe the city, baltimore area, d.c. annapolis, maybe after 6:00 or 7:00 a better chance of a shower. and on sunday with the system getting closer, a better chance of showers on sunday. but not a washout all weekend. and it will get cooler on saturday and sunday. and then it warms up again by early next week. temperatures back up into the

it is just after 5:30. 86-degrees with a few clouds outside. happy friday and thank you for staying with eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. the race for hartford county executive is suddenly altered after one of the candidates is killed in a car crash. suzanne collins reports, steven right -- steven wright's death has shocked the community. >> reporter: the fatal one-car crash took place on a winding country road east of bel air.

stephen wright's suv ran off the road and into a pole. wright, who was running for county executive, was en route to a campaign appearance. >> this man had so much potential. he was brilliant. he will be missed. >> reporter: stephen wright was a member of the hartford county central committee. he started the route 40 republican club and another one in north hartford county. he was a conservative republican and a constitutionalist. >> he had very conservative ideology. he believed in christian principals, family first. he was a hard-working business person. >> reporter: according to a wright supporter, the accountant was headed to two events when he crashed. a right to life meeting and a republican delegate fundraiser. >> reporter: according to police the suv never broke and didn't curve and ran right into the pole. >> drugs and alcohol were not cause of the accident.

>> reporter: what do you think it was. >> individuals at scene said he appeared to have some medical issues. >> reporter: he is 50 and survived by a wife and three daughters. suzanne collins, wjz eyewitness news. >> incumbent hartford county executive david craig said he grieves over the loss because the two men were friends for decades. a man who crashed a stolen plane back in december gets some good news from a judge. calvin cox had been living in a tent near the frederick municipal airport in frederick county where the plane was stolen. the 51-year-old was ordered to pay only $40 in restitution to the plane's owner. prosecutors say insurance paid for most of the damage except for that deductible. cox has served half of his nine month sentence for stealing the plane. sentencing today for the woman involved in the kidnapping of elizabeth smart. vick joins us from the news room with the judge's decision

in this case. >> reporter: today the suspect said she was sorry. she was sentenced to 15 years in prison. she'll get credit for the 7 years already served and she will testify against her now estranged house brian mitchell. smart was discovered with them nine months after she was abducted. >> vick, thank you. elizabeth smart is now 22 years old and currently serving on a religious mission in paris. another rollercoaster day on wall street. stocks bounced higher as investors put aside concerns about europe's money troubles. >> reporter: the stock market took a bunkie jump with the dow plunging below 10,000 and then bouncing up. traders sell the recent selloff might make it a healthier market. >> it's like pruning a rose bush. it's necessary to have it trim back. >> reporter: investors followed

the news when there was a bailout for shaky european economies. greece was the first to accept help. but the government has fought the efforts to control spending. business leaders say the resistance has to end. >> i think the greek society has now realized that this is a dead end road. and unless we turn 180 degrees, we're facing doomsday. >> reporter: if greece irons out it's troubles that would bring some comfort to wall street. jitters about the european economy have fueled a losing streak that took stocks down 10% this last month. president obama's push to reform the financial industry has added to investor concerns. the question is whether a crackdown on certain risky and complex investments will cut into bank profits. the house and senate have each approved their own versions of the overhaul and are now working on a compromise. >> we believe the public is correct in insisting that we not leave them vulnerable. >> reporter: congressional leaders believe the bill will be law by july 4th and traders

mandatory testing for concussions. john melanie plays lacrosse and tells me he hit the mat face first. >> everybody told me i was stumbling. >> reporter: he suffered a concussion but the howard county concussion testing program did. >> every time it showed i was still slow to reaction and i didn't come prehend the questions. >> he went through testing and it was three days later and we expected him to fail and the second one when he faild it we were shocked. >> reporter: starting this fall howard county is the first school system in the state to require mandatory concussion testing on every athlete in a contact sport. >> this program is designed to make sure that all our kids who do suffer a concussion don't come back too early and run the risk of serious injury, even death. >> reporter: starting this fall the students will be given the -- concussion test before they

are getting ready to lace them up on sunday morning. bob matz has more on the second annual maryland half marathon. >> reporter: and they're on. on sunday people instead of horses will be running at timonium race track. it's a benefit for the university of maryland's cancer center. >> we decided to give back. to make the half marathon a premier event and also to make it a premier fundraising event for the cancer center. >> reporter: michael helped found the race last year. his mother is a cancer survivor and his father donated $10 million to the center in her honor. >> it allowed them to bring in world class researchers and now the institution is ranked one of the top in the country and has the national cancer institution designation and they have been doing tremendous

to pedal rather than drive today. >> it's bike to work today. >> reporter: this is the 13th year maryland has participated in the national event but it's nothing new for the 1% of marylanders who bike to work regularly. >> it makes the environment better and us healthier and our quality of life better. >> reporter: and the federal government is trying to make it even more cost effective. last year congress passed a bicycle commuter act. the law allows employers to give employees who bike to work every day $20 a month. employers can then write off that cost. organizers say studies show biking to work every day rather than driving saves on average between $6,000 to $10,000 a year. >> water is cheaper than gas. >> reporter: in the past three years the city has added 15 miles of bike lanes. >> baltimore drivers can be tough and mean-spirited but you learn to deal with it. >> reporter: many say the benefits far out weigh any risks and hope this event sends a positive message. >> it's really telling people
