blair is calling it quits as the director of national intelligence. he told his staff friday, one day after an oval office meeting with president obama. two top aids say blair walked out of that meeting knowing he had lost the president's confidence. but the administration spokesman stopped short of confirming that. >> the decided to make a -- the president decided to make a change. i'll let that speak for itself. >> reporter: he spent months coordinating intelligence agency but a senate investigation show he missed key clues that could have helped them stop the plot on an airline over the christmas holiday. the president has spoken with a number of candidates to fill the job. they are not yet ready to stay who is on the short list but they do expect the president to

make a decision soon. despite showdowns between the president and other top aids, there were records of praise for his work. >> this is an extremely difficult job for any person to do. and we think that admiral blair did a great job. >> reporter: blair's resignation takes effect next friday. his top deputy will take over until president obama picks the next person responsible for coordinating intelligence. kathryn brown for cbs news, washington. >> one of the leading candidates to replace blair is james clapper, a pentagon official who heads up the military intelligence gathering operations. more information about the removal of a jet blue pilot from his flight. after confusion about whether the pilot had a medical issue or was a threat to himself and others. mary is live in the news room with what is being said. >> reporter: vick, investigators said the pilot was due to a medical emergency. later a police source said a flight attendant would used to date the pilot had received an

email indicating he was distraught. investigators say the pilot had threatened to harm himself in a spectacular fashion. prior to the flight a weapon was taken to the pilot. police did not charge the still unnamed pilot with illegal possession of a firearm. action suggests he may be part of a group of pilots allowed to carry weapons on board. back to you. >> jet blue officials say at no point did passengers face any threats. the report was reportedly hospitalized. a maryland second grader who earlier this week got a visit from the first lady said she would like to visit the white house. the 7-year-old put a human face on the issue of immigration on wednesday when she told the first lady that her mother was an undocumented resident. the moment caught by television cameras moved calls for immigration reform. a push for more fuel official vehicles on the road. the president signed a memorandum calling on the auto industry to push for more fuel-

efficient cars and trucks. the president said the fuel efficiency standards could help reduce u.s. dependence on foreign oil, cut transportation costs and help spur job growth. a baltimore county road has a long history for pedestrian dangers. tonight a man is in critical condition after trying to jay walk across liberty road. weijia jiang has more from the problem area. >> reporter: there are more and more people rushing into the middle of the road, completely ignoring the crosswalks at every insection -- intersection and that could be deadly. crews rescued harry keane after a car strikes him and from the ground the witnesses describe the horrific scene. >> as he was running, the car came, straight up, he went in the air about four feet, hit it on his head and this was just all bloody. >> he was transported to shock trauma where he's currently in critical condition. >> reporter: investigators say he was trying to cross liberty road near milford mill without

using a crosswalk. the area is said to be notorious for jay walking. wjz found many pedestrians jay walking and one man used the crosswalk but not at the appropriate time. >> people will hit you. they don't stop. >> reporter: but police say the drivers are usually not doing anything wrong. county stats show in pedestrian related accidents it's the pedestrian's fault 82% of the time. in fact just two weeks ago county authorities gathered right here on liberty road to raise awareness about pedestrian county. >> in baltimore county you are far more likely to die from a traffic accident than as a victim from a homicide. >> reporter: to police urge pedestrians to stop doing this before it's too late. >> i've learned my lesson. after my friend got hit before, i'm like i'm crossing in the crosswalk and that's it. >> reporter: baltimore county

police will stop issuing warnings but start giving out citations. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> police say the driver involved in last night's crash will not face any charges. a coalition of 11 states is asking to upgrade amtrak. they have proposed that the federal railroad administration launch a study on possible expansions and improvement of the service from washington, d.c. to boston. states warn that failure to upgrade will lead to further highway congestion and airport delays. time for a look in tomorrow's edition of the baltimore sun. more on the clean up of swan park that opens on saturday. leg mason's plan to find a successor to the money imaginer. and coverage of the ncaa lacrosse quarter finals. for these stories and much more read the baltimore sun.

a high-speed chase in phoenix, arizona, ends with a woman thrown to the ground as he tried to escape from police. the chase started 100 miles earlier and reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. when the car stopped the woman driver got out and ran after trying to carjack another driver. a half dozen officers had to subdue her. a violent fight during gym class set a southeast texas school captured by a student's cell phone camera. the fight involved several male high school students. two brothers involved in the fight say they were targeted and the assault sent them to the hospital. the family plans to file a lawsuit. firefighters are making significant progress against a grass fire raging in california. it started just after noon yesterday along a dry creek bred. investigators sate the fire was caused by a spark when a

tractor plowing weeds struck a walk. the fire is now 70% contained. bono is hospitalized in germany. the manager of u 2 said the group front man underwent emergency back surgery. he was injured in munich. the first show was to be in salt lake city and that has been postponed and the rest of the dates are still being decided. it is said he never told a lie but george washington was not prompt about returning library books. the books had been overdue for 221 years. person who signed them out was none other than the first president of the united states. the overdue fees were calculated at $300. good luck collecting. >> but would turned them in? >> i don't know. who is a historic book. >> maybe he's not dead. katie curic has a preview

he three hits last night and this one a run scoring double. over the last nine games his batting average is over .500 and he is batting 5th against washington starter scott olson. he's emerged as one of the nat's top hitters unbeaten in the last five starts. the opposite is true of david hernandez who has yet to hearne a victory this season and could be a candidate tore demotion if he continues. and he's facing a washington team that is better than the o's. the nats play the best at home. they have won 12 of 21 games there. game time is 7:05. see the o's and nats on masn hd. when it comes to coaches, the nba is into recycling. the 76ers have hired doug collins. thiss the fourth -- this is the fourth team he has coached.

brian vickers will miss the rest of the season for nascar. he is suffering from blood clots in his legs and lungs which requires blood thinning. casey mears will take his place. the terps are the top seed in the tourney and take on penn in college park tomorrow. a win puts the ladies one step closer to a possible championship. >> it's getting so close. i think that's the hard part, trying not to look too far ahead because every team in this tournament is so good and has so much talent. >> maryland beat penn 12-6 during the regular season. we'll see how far they can go. >> thank you, mark. we'll be right back. ,,
