crude oil. the get away islands closed as hazmat crews tried to clean up. off its shores two porpoises swam into more oil which keeps washing in. in the fragile marshes off southern louisiana, the thick ooze is covering the grass. >> the good mornings are not working. >> reporter: the spewing well at the bottom of the gulf prompted president obama to form a national commission to examine the accident. >> the purpose of this commission is to consider both the root causes of the disaster and offer options on what safety and environmental precautions we need to take. >> reporter: the oil has already killed birds and other wildlife. scientists fear the environmental impact will deepen now that the oil is coming ashore. bp conceded much more is flowing into the gulf than the previous estimate and it's prompting scientists and researchers to descend into the gulf coast with their own ideas to help.

and seattle demonstrates his own nontoxic solution. and this doctor showed us another problem engineered to absorb the crude. >> we can manufacture it down here locally. >> reporter: bp's prime concern remains plugging the massive oil leak. they have a difficult procedure engineers call a top kill, something that's worked above ground before but never been tried 5,000 feet below the sea. in haven't its, louisiana, joel -- in venice, louisiana, joel brown, reporting. >> and now they want to set the marshes on fire to burn that oil. rescuers are weighing the pros and cons of that. we have a lot of rain moving across the state. let's take a live look outside. looks like a break around the city but we're not done yet.

bernadette woods has a look at first warning live doppler radar. >> that's right, it's still the storm that will stick around for tomorrow. this is a lot more of this out here because in the middle part of the state, it's making its way into southern maryland. we don't only have rain but a couple of rumbles of thunder with it. hagerstown, frederick, back through hancock. that's moving eastward. all of that will pick up over the next 15 to 20 minutes. spotty showers out ahead to towson. cambridge out there and south of la plato, more of a solid rain. out ahead of that band, still light. a few more bands come through and we'll be dealing with this tomorrow. i'll have the forecast coming up, adam. new at 11:00, police in

ann arundel county are investigating the suspicious death of a 6 week old baby. police found the baby boy dead inside a home in laurel. homicide directives are asking -- detectives are asking anyone with information to give them a call. a well-known businessman is murdered outside his tavern. tonight, baltimore county police are searching for two suspects. that brutal shooting happened outside of dundalk right after closing time. wjz is live tonight. suzanne collins has emotional reaction from the friends. >> reporter: the owner was shot nine times multiple times before dying. tonight his employees and friends are mourning that violent death. >> reporter: a young woman is very upset by the death of the bar's owner. he was shot nine times in all. he was found by police early this morning after closing up shop. two men were seen fleeing the scene. >> if you ever had troubles or

needed anything, he'd always help you out no matter who you were. he always helped me out and my mom after my dad pass add way. he's just a really big father figure. >> reporter: tonight, the tavern is dark and friends say his widow is in mourning in the home next door. this man says lee was his best friend, and he tried to comfort the victim's two sons 15 and 16. >> to be there to talk to them was not an easy thing to do because they loved their dad. they looked up to their dad. and he was a good father to them. >> reporter: police say they don't know the motive for the murder of lee martin. the 40 year was still breathing when rescuers arrived but he died later. he was known in the dundalk neighborhood where he grew up. he took over the bar three years ago from a relative. he owned another business, an

appraisal business. >> answer i turned 21, i came down and he gave me a job. >> reporter: baltimore county police are asking for any information on this murder, any tips. adam, back to you on tv hill. >> thank you. there is also a reward being offered through metro crimestoppers. if you have any information, call 1866-7-lockup. police are still searching for the killer of matt markmiller at locust point. martin disappeared in early april and just last weekend, his body was found partially buried in the woods of the state park. the medical examiner has ruled his death a murder. a beloved member of baltimore's theater community is killed in a hit and run accident. julio gonzales is struck on may 13th by a drive who're just kept going. his co-workers had been keeping

a vigil at the side of his death trying to you arech that driver to come forward. >> i understand the police department is checking all of the cameras in the area. sooner or later, they will catch you. we're asking you to do the right thing and turn yourself into the baltimore city police department. >> reporter: gonzalez''s co- workers want to have some other method to slow down the traffic there. we have an update tonight to the human remains that washed up along the beaches of ocean city. police say it belongs to greg miller of shelbyville. he disappeared on february 9th, the night before a big snowstorm. the medical examiner will determine the cause of death. tonight, we also know the name of a little boy who died in a stream near his home. the harford compoundy sheriff's office says justin wilson was skipping rocks with a friend when he fell into the creek less than a mile from his

house. an early morning police- involved shooting sends one man to shock trauma. this is the fourth police- involved shooting this year. adds gigi barnett explains, the number is dropping. >> reporter: police on east chase street saturday afternoon, baltimore detectives say it's where an off duty city officer shot a man traying to steal his personal car. >> alcohol was not a factor in the shooting. >> reporter: the officer was in a restaurant when he heard a car alarm going off. he went out to investigate and found out it was his car. >> the suspect had broken the driver's side window, went into the vehicle. when the officer approached the suspect, he was inside the car, exited from the rear passenger side. >> the officer gelled out, telling the suspect to stop. that's when the man allegedly

lunged at the officer. >> later in the suspect's clothing we found a screwdriver. >> reporter: city leaders say the number of police-involved shootings is down. so far this year, there have been four compared to the same time last year when there were eight. >> a lot of the previous ones we had involved officers losing their weapons. as of late, we focus on better training. here we are in a 50% reduction in police-involved shooting. >> reporter: i'm gigi barnett, webb "eyewitness news." >> homicide is investigating the shooting. that's standard procedure in any police-involved shooting. moon while, that suspect will face assault charges. a scare for shoppers at the towson town center. the macy's was forced to evacuate after white powder was discovered. tonight, fire officials say the source of the powder residue was a fire extinguisher that

a plane crash in india leaves more than 150 people dead tonight. eight people survived the crash. according to officials, the plane was trying to land on a truckie hill top airport when it overshot the runway and plunged done a cliff. survivors say they heard an explosion then saw flames break out. the crash is india's deadliest since 1996. a detroit community says good-bye to a little girl tragically shot during a police raid. friends and family gathered to remember 7-year-old aiaya jones. the officer's gun discharged after making physical contact with the girl's grandmother. the reverend al sharpton gave a

tacks in afghanistan in six days. the mornings of three american hikers are arrested in iran last year returned home without their children today. the three women returned to new york after spending ten hours of the last few days visiting their children. sarah shroud, shane bauer and josh fattal were arrested along the iraqi border in july. they claim had he were hiking. the women say their children have been treated well but are devastated they could only turn home without them. >> the pain we felt in having to leave without our children is almost more than we can bear. our greatest hopes what to bring our children home with us where they belong. >> iran has accused the americans of espionage. they were hiking and crossed the border on accident the family says. the u.s. pressed release on

moves or way. it's going a few different rounds of rain. this is the current one we're kohl dealing with. we had lighter stuff move through earlier. then a couple of thunderstorms build up over bel air. frederick and hagerstown earlier. those have moved on. this is the next one we see out there. cascade, hawingerstown, rain coming down heavily right now. it will pick up shortly for westminster and all of this is moving off to the northeast. i also want to show you when we open up a little bit that there are showers on the eastern shore and in delaware. maybe just a faw light showers in baltimore county. perry hall, edgewood with a few showers out there. across the south, we have a new round making its way along that line. ing see see few showers around cambridge. salisbury, heavier showers just off to the west. now let's switch it over and show you how this is all

scattered around. clouds thicken up during the day. here's the second round making its way through. the winds have been out of the song east and that's feeding more moisture into the system. the dew point's in the low 60s. that's why if was muggy out there today. temperature-wise, i feel warm with the clouds in place. it's 69 degrees in baltimore. 68 in easton. we did manage a high of 79 degrees earlier today. it's above the averagep 76. we started out today at 66. we're still above that. tonight we're off a little bit and will not go up all that much. that's because it's going to be on top of us. you can see really dry air out to our west. this is the storm that's disconnecting itself from the jet stream. nothing really to push it along. with it along, we'll see a few rounds continue to form and spiral throughed day tomorrow and then on monday, it sort of drifts off to the south and close enough we could see a couple of showers mainly across

southern parts of the state and clouds around from it. then it will fizzle out over the southeast. at the same time, a real big question mark coming in with the forecast here. there is the potential for a tropical system to form after the atlantic. if this happens, this will stop up the weather pattern and affect our weather. until that happens, we'll keep you up to date. this is the forecast we'll go in here. tonight, rain around for thunderstorms and 61 for the low. tomorrow, we get up to 72, still the thunderstorms around. that keeps the chance around on monday. tuesday is out of here. again, big question mark in the time frame here. adam? >> thank so you much. stay with us. stay with us. sports is coming up next. ,,,,,,
