solumn graduation, members of the graduating class honor love. we begin tonight with that emotion story. a usual day of celebration brought many to tears. today love got her diploma as students kept her memory alive. >> a cousin of the cockyville

native receives the diploma. >> by awarding a posthumous degree of bachelor of arts. >> reporter: many who graduated has white ribbons pinned to their gowns, honoring love. >> there's no reason that she shouldn't be here. >> reporter: yardley's exboyfriend now faces murder charges accused of beating love to death. before the murder, while a student hughley was arrested for assaulting two police officers. now university officials are pushing for a new student criminal record notification law. that would have informed them of the incident. >> how can we make things better. how can we improve campus safety. >> reporter: but enforcing that

law could be difficult. this week love's death is the front page of people magazine. we're learning more tonight about the death of an infant in anne arundel county. inside they found a 6 -week-old baby dead after someone alerted the next door neighbor who called 911. investigators say they have reason to believe the death may be suspicious. >> circumstances that officers discovered at the scene. the house was in disray. we're not sure if there was a struggle there that occurred prior to the child's death, before that or everyone if it was related. homicide detectives are now investigating and anyone with information is asked to call anne arundel police. we also have an update tonight to a police involved shooting. that's where police say an off duty officer heard a car alarm going off outside of his home only to find out it was his

vehicle. the officer shot the would be robber in the knee. he's expected to be charged with auto theft and other crimes. the officer is a ten year veteran of the police department. new at 11:00 tonight, a large vehicle plows into a group of people walking in a baltimore city sidewalk and two people are hospitalized. you can see right here where the suv jumped a curb right outside the day care. witnesses say there was a dog on the sidewalk at the time of the crash, sadly that dog did not make it. well, you can't hide anymore from baltimore's speed cameras. that's the message to drivers from city transportation officials tonight. wjz is live, derek valcourt reports on something new you should be looking out for. >> we are all particular on these cameras. they are permanent fixtures, locked into place. starting tomorrow, new portable cameras may be rolling into a

school zone near you. tim jeffers and his kids live near a school zone. >> i see a lot of vehicles early in the morning flying. they have to be doing at least 50. >> reporter: complaints like his have sparked people to install 48 school zone signs. >> knock on wood, thank goodness no one has been hurt. >> reporter: but signs like these will soon be rotating at different school zones around the city. >> we will have posted signs to indicate that a speed enforcement device is in place at that particular intersection. >> reporter: that sounds just fine to parents like leslie jackson. >> maybe people will be more cautious. >> reporter: the city believes it's helping. >> you don't receive a lot of repeat offenders. that's the whole point of the program, to make sure we don't

have repeat offenders. >> it would be a high number, i can tell you. i would like to see them do it. >> reporter: okay, so this portable speed camera ticket just like the regular speed camera, $40, no points on your license. the city says they are going to roll those cameras out tomorrow in the northeast area of baltimore. but they say, they will be all over the city throughout the course of the next year or so. derek valcourt. drivers are warned, derek, thank you. and the school will get a list of where those cameras will be each week. for a list, you can go to our website, we will put it there on www.wjz.com. the cordish company wants to build a slot club at the mall. the cordish company is suing

the elections board. switching gear to the gulf post. that's where that oil spill is now killing birds, turtles and a number of other animals. to make matters worse, bp's underwater siphon is barely making a dent in the problem. joel brown reports, that the state of louisiana is now taking this oil spill into its own hands. >> reporter: wave after oil soaked wave keeping pounding the coast of louisiana. and there's no end in sight. the louisiana governor says bp has done little to protect his state. >> we will not say simply, let the oil come to louisiana, we'll clean it after the fact, that's not enough. >> reporter: they are counting on these boons to keep the oil from coming on to shore. there's nothing to keep the oil

from invading this wildlife preserve. the last new effort to stop the spew could come as early as tuesday. engineers plan to shoot mud then cement into the hole that lies a mile beneath the surface. >> in terms of not trusting bp, there's nobody that's more devastated by what has happened and nobody that wants to shut this off more than we do. >> reporter: but ken salazar publicly questioned bp. >> i'm angry and frustrated that bp has been unable to keep this well from leaking and to keep the oil from spreading. >> reporter: salazar has promised to push bp out of the way if they cannot stop the oil leak. the justice department

officials have been at the gulf region gathering information about the spill but they are not saying whether or not there is a criminal investigation at this time. here in maryland, nothing the prettiest sunday weather wise. let's take a live look outside and we have more rain on the way. bernadette woods has the updated conditions. >> reporter: we have more clouds than there were showers. let me show you live doppler radar, there's not a whole lot going on right now. there's a few spotty showers. you're seeing a lot right around here. there's that radar site. we are going to see fog form tonight. notice when i put it into motion, those are the showers left. and there's one little one making it way from dc. so things are calming down a little bit. we are eventually going to get rid of this storm but we will soon get rid of it. the rain did not stop the maryland half marathon. it is the halfest growing race

in baltimore county and part of wjz's continuing community commitment. each runner there had a story, gigi barnette reports. >> reporter: at the starting line of the baltimore half marathon, pace is important, time is too and each runner has a goal. to finish it. the half marathon supports the university of maryland cancer center. the money raised goes toward research which is key to keeping cancer at bay. >> in hopes of recruiting, bringing in some of the best doctors in the country. we've built a tremendous staff now. >> reporter: from the sidelines there's encouragement for runners. >> there were some really neat signs going up at some of the hilly course. it would get difficult then you

would see a sign that said, this is much easier than fighting cancer. >> i'm still going through treatment tonight. >> reporter: each runner over the finish line makes way for swift recovery. >> it makes me feel great. like people care. >> reporter: last year the half marathon raised more than $250,000 for the cancer research center. this year they hope to leave that number in the dust. at the maryland state fairgrounds, i'm gigi barnette, back to you in tv hill. and vic gelfen's ride is coming up. it's all to benefit the susan komen foundation. the ride is june 5th and 6th and they have a lofty goal this year. >> this is year number 10, we

take a look at this video of a scary double disaster in china. rainy weather triggers a landslide then it's slammed into a passenger train. the accident killed at least 19 passengers and injured more than 70 others, eight of the train's carriages were forced

off the track. a former member of the former royal family is a part of a police sting. they have a recording of ferguson trying to sell access to her ex-husband. now right now ferguson is not accused of breaking any laws, but the dollar amount they were talking about in that video was more than half a million dollars. ferguson's reps add that her ex- husband had no knowledge of the meeting. >> and in baseball, lima has died at the age of 38.

his cause of death is said to be a heart attack. and there's a new standard to rid of drop side cribs. 32 infants and toddlers have suffocated or died of strangulation in drop side cribs over the last 10 years. now a u.s. senator wants the government to implement an all out ban. >> one death is too many. this legislation will force the prohibition of selling any drop side cribs any where in this country. now the legislation could be introduced later this week, if approved the ban would outlaw the manufacture sale or resale of all drop side cribs and ban them from day care centers and hotels. in health watch, the large east pediatrician group are relaxing their stance on

swimming lessons under the age of 24 months. now they say that some studies actually do indicate that swim lessons from as early as the age of 1 may prevent child drownings. here in maryland, environmental injuries are at war. this battleground right now is prince george's county. >> reporter: it is an unwelcomed visitor to our state. and it's man against bug in prince george county. now the environmental agency is joining several states and canada to wage a war. this is the problem, the emerald ashborge beetle. >> the cost of eradicating the emerald beetle is in the

millions. >> reporter: it was rediscovered two years ago. one recent strategy to eliminate it's ash tree food source in counties before the beetle spreads and quarantine any firewood from leaving the area which could transport the bug. this bug originates in china but made it to states in wood crates. the latest tactic, purple sticky traps in your neighborhood. >> 4,000 of these traps are going to be placed in maryland this season. and with hopes of collecting any ash, any emerald ash borge that have spread out of our quarantine area. >> reporter: about 10% of baltimore's trees are ash. the wood is also used for baseball bats. if experts can't stop this army

down. okay, the winds out of the east air coming down tonight. and with them coming down and the moisture around, we are going to see fog tomorrow. temperature wise is also pretty warm out there 69 degrees still in baltimore. take a look at the dewpoint. it is way up. so it is very muggy out there tonight. and it will be again tomorrow. temperatures as you see, pretty much in the 60s across the board right now. it tops out close to average at 75 degrees and the average is 76. started out warm at 66 degrees. now here is the storm when we open it up. notice again this ban as we describe here. that's the center of the storm drifting off to the south. all the showers are climbing down. it's starting to come down tomorrow, we will have clouds around, a few peaks of sunshine then a chance for a few showers. then after that the showers head to the south. on tuesday, it goes back out into the ocean. there's a chance this could

take a tropical formation when it's over the ocean. if it does, things get a little bit different as we head toward the end of the week. if we could just get rid of this storm, we could have a couple of dry days before this next front comes in. if this does form into something tropical, it's going to stop up off pattern. it could stop this storm and it could draft back in our direction later in the week. so what we're thinking, still a chance for a shower tomorrow. we clear out tuesday into wednesday. but then it's a big question after that, whether it be this storm or this one. so that's what we're going to keep you up to date on as we head over the next few days here. today when we head through the overnight hours, 54, fog tomorrowing, possibly some drizzle. still the chance for a couple of showers around here. but take a look at that, we're back out into the 80s tuesday and wednesday. then thursday and friday, when the big question starts to come
