the oil has hit more than 65 miles of the louisiana coast and nearly five weeks after the accident, the obama administration says it's not confident bp knows what it's doing. tara mergener is in washington with details. >> reporter: well, with every passing day, pressure is mounting on the white house to help end this ordeal. but the administration admits only the company and the oil industry have the know-how. members of the obama administration may not like what they see when they fly over the gulf of mexico this morning. for 34 days now, a blown out well has been spewing millions of gallons of oil into the water. and more and more of it appears to be washing up among louisiana's beaches. >> i'm angry and frustrated that bp has been unable to stop this well from leaking and to stop the pollution from spreading. >> reporter: ken salazar blasted

bp officials sunday and threatened to push the oil giant out of the way if it can't clean up the mess soon. a mile long tube has captured more than a half million gallons of crude in the past week, but it began sucking up oil at a slower rate over the weekend. we'll have a series of attempts to kill the well for good. >> reporter: bp's next try has been postponed until wednesday. it involves pumping heavy mud into the well to clog it. but louisiana isn't waiting for bp or the federal government to help. the state's governor told reporters sunday he's taking matters in to his own hands. >> it is clear the resources needed to protect our coast are still not here. >> reporter: governor bobby jindal says the state has begun building sand barriers to protect the coastline and its fragile wildlife. as for local residents, they don't care who or how. they just want the water clean. but many experts believe that won't even be possible until crews dig a relief well at the bottom of the gulf and that could take months.

and the white house says the justice department has been gathering information about the oil spill, but won't say if a criminal investigation has been launched. michelle, back to you. >> tara mergener in washington. thanks. during an interview yesterday, former republican vice presidential candidate sarah palin suggested the obama administration is too close to big oil. >> if there's any connection with the contributions made to president obama and his administration and the support by the oil companies to the administration, if there's any connection there to president obama taking so doggone long to get in there, to dive in there and grasp the complexity and the potential tragedy that we are seeing here in the gulf of mexico. >> the white house says the government has been doing all it can and bp will be held accountable. >> my suggestion to sarah palin would be to get slightly more informed as to what's going on in and around oil drilling in this country. >> president obama has appointed

a commission to investigate the oil spill. former democratic senator bob graham and former epa administrator william k. riley will serve as co-chairs. turning now to the latest from north korea's alleged torpedo attack, this morning south korea's president says the north will pay for the attack which killed 46 south korean sailors in march. he also vowed to cut off all trade with north korea and take the issue to the u.n. security council. overnight, the white house said u.s. support for south korea's defense is unequivocal. secretary of state hillary clinton is in china this morning, north korea's main ally. she calls the situation highly precarious. clinton is pressing the chinese to reign in north korea and support a u.n. resolution condemning the act. she's in china for high level economic talks. she's scheduled to visit south korea on wednesday. jamaican security forces are battling armed supporters of a reputed drug lord.

a state of emergency has been declared in the capital of kingston. there is heavy gunfire and a police station has been set on fire. christopher coke is charged in the u.s. with arms and drug trafficking. the u.s. has issued a travel alert. the iranian interior minister says it may be possible to exchange three american hikers held on espionage charges. last week iran allowed the americans to be visited by their mothers. their mothers returned home to the u.s. disappointed they had to leave their children behind. >> the pain we felt at having to leave tehran without our children is almost more than we can bear. our greatest hope was to bring our children home with us. where they belong. >> the hikers were captured ten months ago. iran says they were spying. their families said they

crosseded tcrossed the border by accident. on the cbs "moneywatch," most stocks rebounded after last week's losses. >> reporter: most asian stock markets gained ground despite more concern about europe's financial stability. the hang seng finished up more than half a percent while the nikkei was off a fraction. today wall street gets the latest on the housing market. friday a late day rally pulled stocks higher after a very ugly week. the dow gained 125 points. the nasdaq added 25. british airways cabin crews have gone on strike. it began after last ditch talks failed. the airline said it should still operate more than half of its flights, but those between here and london are expected to see cancellations. so call ahead. top executives at aig will not face criminal charges. the justice department had been investigating the insurance giant for misleading investors. aig nearly went bankrupt in 2008 and needed a taxpayer bailout to

survive. the s.e.c. is still investigating and could bring civil charges. it will soon cost you more to cancel your iphone contract with at&t. starting june 1st, the carrier will charge $325 if you want to get out of your contract early. right now, they charge $175. the announcement comes amid speculation apple will soon offer the smart phone through other wireless carriers. and shrek is not as green as he used to be. the fourth movie in the animated series "shrek forever after" had a weaker than projected opening with $71 million, but that was still enough to win the weekend box office. heroic and wonderful act. white house press secretary robert gibbs responded on cbs' "face the nation" calling awlaki a murderous thug. >> we're trying to find him and many others throughout the world that seek to do our country and to do our interests great harm. >> reporter: the obama administration admitted in april that awlaki is on the cia's list of targets for assassination despite his american citizenship. >> because he's so visible. it would be very important to get him because it would send a message to radical islamists and jihadists around the world. >> reporter: this is awlaki driving on the streets of america and preaching in an american mosque. before he went into hiding in yemen after the ft. hood shooting. in spite of the religious freedom he enjoyed here, awlaki is now at war with america. he made it clear in this latest video that it's a religious war calling president obama the leader of the war on islam and

leader of the crusader campaign. in a commencement speech at west point just hours before the video was released, the president embraced american muslims. >> extremists want a war, but muslims are part of our national life including those who serve in our united states army. >> reporter: asked in the video about muslim groups who disapproved of the christmas day airline plot because it targeted civilians, awlaki had a chilling response. he said those who might be killed in a plane are merely a drop of water in the sea. lara logan, cbs news, washington. former "survivor" producer bruce beresford-redmond who is suspected in his wife's murder is back in the u.s. his attorney says he returned from mexico to be with his children and to tend to family matters. he did not have permission to leave. his wife's body was found in cancun last month. investigators have said the victim's body showed signs of asphyxiation.

here's a look at the weather in some cities around the country. new york, partly cloudy at 71. miami, 87. chicago, sunny at 88. denver, windy at 67. los angeles, 63. and time now for a check on the national forecast. latest satellite picture shows clouds scattered across the northwest. it's a nice morning around the northeast and ohio valley and it's cloudy across much of the mid-atlantic states. now, later today, scattered showers will be developing across the northern and central rockies. it will be heating up across the southeast. scattered thunderstorms will be popping up across the plains and much of the ohio valley and northeast enjoy a comfortable afternoon with plenty of sunshine. turning how to sports. the suns win at home against the lakers in the nba playoffs. omari stoudemire had 42 points to lead phoenix over los angeles 118-109. that cuts the lakers' lead in the nba western conference final

to 2-1. game four is tuesday night in phoenix. in baseball, a weekend of inter-league play and the mets beat the yankees. the mets' jason bay hit two home runs for the early lead and they held off yankee rallies for a 6-4 win. the loss drops the defending world series champs six games back of tampa bay. with the score tied in the bottom of the 10th inning, washington's josh williams homered to left for a walkoff win over baltimore. it was washington's first win in four extra inning games this year. and in kansas city, an embarrassing loss for one player. colorado rocky center fielder dexter fowler chases a long drive and loses his glove over the wall. the bowl bounces away for a triple and fowler had to climb the wall to get his glove back. the rockies beat kansas city 11-7. when we return, we'll take another look at this morning's top stories. and fergie under fire.
