criticism as the oil spills spread through the wetlands. hello, i'm don scott. >> and i'm jessica kartalija. hoosh about 65 miles of -- about 65 miles of louisiana coastline are covered in oil. check out the live look at the oil head. today, there's more frustration and anger. bp can't figure out how to stop that. here's joel brown with the latest. >> reporter: about 65 miles of the louisiana coast is covered in oil. bp is going to try top kill to stop the spill. they'll jab mud into the well and it's never been used in waters this deep. >> if it works, it will work wednesday and if not, we have other options. >> reporter: with patience running low, cabinet members are touring the gulf region for a progress update. >> i'm angry and frustrated

that bp has been unable to stop this well from leaking and stopping the pollution. >> reporter: the ruptured well spewed 6 million-gallons and the crude is seeping into the marshes. >> and you can see the oil on the pelicans and you can see the oiled birds not able to fly or swim. >> reporter: at least two areas where the pelicans nest are covered in crude and there's more oil covered birds in passing days. >> the worst nightmare has come true. >> reporter: the workers are building sand barriers to hold off the oil and they're pressing the government for more help. wjz, eyewitness news. and today, the university of maryland researcher predicts that the mid-atlantic beaches should be safe unless there's a hurricane and other strong storms. a big push from the school leaders to curb the bullying and this afternoon's report,

the districts have help from maryland's first lady. gigi barnett has the details. >> reporter: good afternoon, jessica and everyone. first lady katie o'malley says that the number of bullying cases in maryland and around the nation are alarming. that's why she's taking a week to fight it. >> reporter: in massachusetts, this 15-year-old committed suicide in january and police arrested three students for bullying her and in florida, a 5th grader hangedherself. in baltimore city, students were suspended after bullying. a little girl was beaten by three students. >> you can't put a band-aid on it -- you have to fix it >> reporter: the next step is preventing it. for that, the maryland first

lady signed on to help and marked this week as bullying awareness week. -- all kids know what it is and getting them to be aware of what to do about it. >> reporter: last school year, 1700 cases were reported around the state. some school leads fear that could be highier because the students are too afraid to come forward. >> it's not a serious thing and you have to deal with it. >> reporter: he's a 6th grader and he's seen it in the hallways and he says that cyber bullying is the worst. and students use the cell phones and internet. >> because of that, all of the texting and bad messages. they're stressed out all of the time. >> reporter: and mrs. o'malley sent the letters to the school district and that's the 24th district asking the teachers to set aside time this week. jessica, back to you inside.

thank you, and she'll plan on focusing on the bullying again in the fall. the police identified the 6 week old boy found dead over the weekend. today, the detectives are awaiting autopsy results. there were no signs of trauma, but the apartment was found in disarray. an emotional graduation at the university of virginia as yeardley love was awarded a posthumous degree. [ cheers and applause ] >> a cousin of the lacrosse player accepted her degree. she was discovered and found dead earlier in her off campus apartment. there >> a developing story from los angeles where the husband of britney murphy was found dead

five months after she died. ron has the details about the circumstances surrounding his death. good afternoon, ron. >> reporter: well, hi, jessica. the l aapd says that his death is from natural causes and the firefighters responded to the emergency call before 10:00 last night. the coroner's office took over the investigation after the detectives ruled out criminal activity. the 39-year-old buried his wife and actress in december. the coroner ruled her death accidental caused by complications from pneumonia. jessica, back to you. he's credited as executive producer of the 2006 film "factory girl." britney murphy was in several movies. and the battle over bringing slots to the area is in the courtroom today. the opponents got the

well, this storm is losing it's hold and it could come back into play. here's how it looked. you can see the rain rotating through and then, drizzle around for the morning hours. and then, you'll see the yellow, that's where the clouds are beak up -- breaking up. we have a flood warning for the river and it will lower itself over the next 6 to 12 hours. winds are out of the east and they're picking up a little bit out there. that's going to mix up the atmosphere and allow the sunshine so break out.

we're going to rise a few more degrees today. it's muggy, the dew point is 62 degrees and we'll stay muggy into tomorrow. 70 in d.c.. and so, we got this hoped up. i want to show you what's going on. the storm pushes off to the south and it will head out over the ocean and it could combine with another storm out there. this could take on a tropical formation and come into play in the forecast. and now, while that's going on, tomorrow, the sunshine is going to break through and then, on wednesday, we'll expect to see a hot afternoon as a new front comes down from the north. there's a chance for a thunderstorm later on wednesday and a better chance thursday and friday with this next front coming down from the north. otherwise, cooler air for the weekend behind that front. i want to show you how it looks now. here's the storm and notice the clouds offshore. that's the low being monitored
