we begin with the celebration out west and the los angeles lakers are the nba champions again. it's their second champion in a row, their 16th overall. they beat the boston celtics in game seven of the nba finals 83-79, thanks to a fourth quarter rally. after the game, rowdy lakers fans took to the streets near the staples center, fights broke out, bonfires were lit and several people jumped on cars attempting to leave the staples center. there have been at least nine arrests. we'll have much more coming up in sports. this morning recovery efforts are under way in minnesota after a string of powerful tornadoes ripped through the state. the twisters touched down in southern minnesota but the hardest hit area was the northwest where at least two people were killed. this is a massive storm that hit south of minneapolis, one of several that struck the state. the town of wadena was hardest hit yesterday. a ten-block residential area was torn apart. dozens of homes were flattened. the high school was damaged and

the community center is gone. about 20 people were injured. >> all you could hear was crash, crash, crash and you honestly thought it was going to come through the basement. >> the floor joists were moving and dust was coming down. i thought, get between the door frame because it felt like it was going to drop in. >> one of the victims was a grandmother. the storms lasted for hours. during his first appearance before congressional committee, bp ceo tony hayward called the gulf oil rig explosion a complex accident. hayward faced angry lawmakers for hours but maintained he knew nothing about the decisions that led to the disaster. tara mergener in washington has more. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, bianca. hayward faced hours of intense questioning yesterday. the hearing produced a lot of drama, but little new information. congress drilled for answers but came up dry. >> i'm not prepared to draw

conclusions about this accident until such time as the investigation is concluded. >> mr. hayward, you're not taking responsibility. you're kicking the can down the road and acting as if you have nothing to do with this company >> reporter: bp ceo tony hayward faced the wrath of lawmakers thursday, demanding more details into the worst oil spill in u.s. history. he offered his deepest apologies for the disaster. >> i am very, very sorry. >> reporter: but his refusal to answer question after question infuriated the panel. >> i had no prior knowledge. i'm not stone walling. i'm afraid i can't recall. >> those of you at the top don't seem to have a clue about what was going on on this rig. i'm sitting here thinking, i could be a ceo of an oil company. i hear it pays a little bit better than being a member of congress. >> reporter: hayward claimed he hadn't heard about the well until days before the accident. he maintained safety is his and his company's top priority, but lawmakers weren't buying it. >> i, like everyone else here and everyone else in america, is

thoroughly disgusted. >> reporter: they accused bp of putting profit over safety after a company e-mails showed a series of cost-cutting measures that apparently made the rig more dangerous. >> bp had no reckless behavior? that's your position? >> there is no evidence of reckless behavior. >> reporter: as for the well that's been gushing for 60 days, hayward says there's only one way to kill it. >> we have to rely on the relief wells. >> reporter: the good news is those wells are slightly ahead of schedule, though they could still take weeks to complete. meantime, more oil skimmers may be headed for the gulf. the coast guard has requested another 55 of them to help clean up the mess. back to you. >> tara mergener in washington for us this morning, thank you. this morning texas republican joe barton is taking heat from both democrats and republicans for comments he made during thursday's bp hearing. barton apologized to bp after he accused the white house of

shaking down bp to set up a xhengs fund. >> i'm ashamed of what happened in the white house yesterday. i think it is a tragedy of the first proportion that a private corporation can be subjected to what i would characterize as a shakedown. >> barton later said his remarks had been misconstrued. gop leaders called his comments wrong and are considering disciplinary action. ronnie lee gardner was executed by a firing squad in utah early this morning. gardner was already facing a murder charge when he shot and killed an attorney at a utah courthouse in 1985. gardner was strapped into a chair with a target pinned to his chest. he was shot to death by five marksmen armed with rifles standing 25 feet away. gardner's family waited outside the prison. >> i don't agree with it. i don't agree with murder, legal murder. i don't agree with what he done, i don't agree with what they

done, but i'm relieved. i'm relieved that he's free. >> it was utah's first execution by firing squad in 14 years. suspected times square bomber faisal shahzad is due in court monday after being indicted for the botched terrorism attempt. shahzad was indicted thursday on ten terrorism and weapons charges. he was arrested two days after his suv was found in the heart of new york city loaded with a homemade gasoline and propane bomb. prosecutors say shahzad received $12,000 in financing from a taliban related militant group. on the "cbs moneywatch," another mixed day for asian stocks. ashley morrison is here in new york. good morning. >> good morning to you. well, asian markets were flat as worries eased over europe's financial stability. japan's nikkei was down a fraction while hong kong's hang seng was mostly higher. on wall street investors shuged off disappointing reports on manufacturing and jobs to finish higher. the dow gained 24 points for the

week. the brea blue chips are up 20% and nasdaq added one. u.s. automakers beat foreign brands for the first time when it comes to quality. according to the latest j.d. powers survey. ford broke into the top five for the first time in the study's 24-year history. toyota's ranking dropped from sixth to 21st after recalling 9 million vehicles earlier this year. spaghetti-os has a mess on its hands. campbell's has recalled 15 million pounds of the product. the meatballs may have been underprocessed and could be unhealthy. the recall affects cans dating back to december of 2008. conagra foods is recalling all pa recalendar brand cheesy chicken and rice frozen meals. they have possibly been linked to a salmonella outbreak in 14 state. the product was distributed to retail outlets nationwide. spirit airlines' flying again after reaching a deal with its striking pilots.

pau gasol. party o in south carolina democratic party officials upheld the surprise u.s. senate primary win offal vin greene, rejecting challenge by greene's opponent. greene is unemployed, faces a felony obscenity charge and did not bother to campaign, yet he won 59% of the primary vote. so he will be the democratic candidate in november facing incumbent republican senator jim demint. it was tauted as a female viagra, a pink pill. designed to boost sex drive in women. today the fda will ask a panel of experts to comment on the safety and effectiveness of the drug. but the agency reports that two independent studies found that flibanserin fails to boost women's sexual desire and there are side effects, including depression, fainting and dizziness. now to a story with a scary

chicago, thunderstorms, 89. denver, sunny, 88. los angeles, sunny, 80. and time now for a check on the national forecast. the latest satellite picture shows a large area of clouds moving into the great lakes region. in the southeast, scattered clouds are beginning to break apart. skies are clear over the northeast and southwest. later today, the ohio river valley could see some severe thunderstorms moving in from the west. the southeast will see isolated storms. and the southwest is hot again with temperatures into the 100s. in sports, it was a thriller of a finish in los angeles. lakers versus celtics. the biggest rivals in basketball. and as kobe bryant struggled, boston led it at the end of the third quarter. bryant heated up scoring 23 in the game. ron artest added 20. and l.a. surged ahead in the fourth. seconds before the buzzer, lakers' pau gasol got his 18th rebound.

lakers claim their 16th nba championship and the party began. bryant was named series mvp. >> the physicality of their team, how smart they are, extremely well coached, you know, they -- guys made big shots. it was tough. they weren't going to beat themselves. we had to beat them. >> and while the champagne sprayed in the lakers' locker room, outside the fans' celebration got a bit out of hand. police reported several injuries and arrests after the game. and now to baseball and the national league beating up on the a.l. central. in cleveland, the mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. in the eighth speedster jose reyes hit a triple to drive in new york's sixth run. the mets won 6-4, their seventh straight victory. in minneapolis, the colorado rockies' jimenez pitched eight innings as rockies beat twins 8-1. jimenez leads baseball with 13

in the town of wadena dozens of homes were destroyed. and ronnie lee gardner was executed by firing squad this morning in utah. gardner was shot to death by five marksmen for killing a lawyer in 1985. it may not be until august that the massive gulf oil leak is stopped. but as bad as things are now for the waters and coastline, it could go even worse. john blackstone explains. >> reporter: on top of the huge oil spill, the gulf of mexico is now bracing for what could be a near record hurricane season. >> this is going to make a disaster movie look like a rehearsal. >> reporter: while hurricanes regularly do terrible damage, this year they will wreck containment booms, force clean-up crews off the water and delay drilling of the relief wells that are now the only hope to stop the leak. there are even fears hurricane-driven rains could be black with oil. >> the oil does not get into rainfall.

it would not rain oil. >> reporter: but a hurricane storm surge could push oil many miles inland. >> we saw the katrina, storm surge went 20 miles inland. so, if we bring the oil inland, it will pollute water supplies, destroy wetlands. it may be an oily mess for people cleaning up. >> reporter: there is also a possibility hurricanes could actually do some good by buy by difficuluting the oil. >> it's like a giant mix master may help alleviate the situation to some degree. >> reporter: there has been one other similar spill in the gulf. in 1979 about 140 million gallons poured into the water off the coast of mexico after a drilling rig blowout. a hurricane disrupted effort to cap that well. but the storm also dispersed the oil, diminishing its effect. forecasters say predicting a hurricane's impact is a bit of a guessing game. >> we have to deal with the idea that in a hurricane there are a lot of events that turn random because of the power of these

storms. >> reporter: even after the oil stops leaking, the millions of gallons already in the water will continue causing harm long into the future. figuring out just how bad the worst case really is will take years. john blackstone, cbs news, san francisco. a sailor is finally back home after a record-breaking voyage at sea. reid stowe docked his schooner in new york city after sailing for 1,152 days without touching land. believed to be a record. one of the first things he did was kiss his girlfriend soanya and meet his 23-month-old son who was born when he was at sea. reid and his girlfriend started a trip together but ten months in, she was too sick to continue, suspecting she was pregnant. >> the most challenging was letting soanya go. but the physicality of it, that's a whole another issue. i just touched on it when i said, this is a marathon beyond all marathons, evolved athleticism. reid, his girlfriend and their son plan to live on the ship and tour the world.
