the desperate search "early" this wednesday morning. good wednesday morning." i'm erica hill. >> i'm chris wragge. it is once again getting hot in here. 7:01 a.m. on the east coast, 84 degrees right now. it's good news -- bad news today. it's going to get up to 99. it was 103 yesterday. they're ramping up the humidity here on the east coast so it will feel hotter today than yesterday. >> it already feels that why. it was that way at 4:30 this morning. lovely. there are some things, good news this morning. we've been talking so much -- you heard that plea from kyron horman's mother, the missing 7-year-old in oregon. this morning wonderful news about a missing 4-year-old girl in missouri who has been found alive. she was abducted monday night from her front yard. she's been reunited with her

parent. we'll get you the latest. this 4-year-old girl found alive. great news to start with today. we do want to get you to the heat, which is, of course, the top story for us. it's where we begin that relentless scorcher blanketing the east coast this week. has killed two people, left tens of thousands without power and relief. cbs news national correspondent jeff glor is in times square with the latest. jeff, good morning. >> reporter: erica, good morning to you. 103 degrees in new york city yesterday. it remains pretty relentless, even early here in the morning. keep in mind, in many of these spots, the temperature's not getting below 80 in the middle of the night. nothing really ever has a chance to cool down. as we enter day four of the heat wave. in boston, tuesday, water hoses were used not just on a fire but on firefighters as risk of overheating. >> when you come out of the building, the cooler temperature is extremely high. you know, you're at the point, i think, you're almost ready to pass out.

>> reporter: in philadelphia, the air conditioning went out at this nursing home and residents had to be carried out. nearby city workers and mail carriers slugged through sweltering temperatures. >> i'm one of those guys the job has to get done, whether it's hot, cold, whatever it is, it has to get done. >> reporter: daily records were broken in cities as far north as providence, rhode island and as far south as baltimore. high of the day at 105. as temperatures rise, so does the strain on the nation's energy systems. in new york, con ed was urging energy conservation. what are we looking senate. >> our outage map. this tells us real time how many customers are out on the con ed system. we're still relying on customers calling us to tell us, hey, i've got -- as soon as they do, that tallies up on this board. >> reporter: there have been some sporadic outages but right now nothing massively widespread, however this heat wave does continue. and as one energy official said,

round one of this prize fight is over but the bell has not rung yet. >> jeff glor in times square this morning. dave price has been tracking the heat wave for us as well. good morning. >> you know what, jeff was talking about the fact that the bell has not rung yet but there is a technical knockout going on. let me explain why. yesterday we just heard about the record set in new york, philadelphia and baltimore, really close in boston and richmond as well. now, keep in mind, as we head through today, what chris talked about at the top of the program, it's going to feel warmer than it did yesterday. so, technically don't stick with these numbers so much. it is going to be that combination of heat and humidity, which is really going to get you up and down the i-95 corridor today. it will feel between 105 and 110 degrees. so, there will probably be more of a demand on energy than yesterday. already this morning, these are the watches and advisories and warnings posted. we're worried about air quality,

heat, excessive heat, cooling centers remaining open but we're not out of this yet. that area of high pressure still sticking by the carolina/virginia border. it is slow to go, everyone. we'll talk more about when this break's going to happen in just a little while. in the meantime, chris, back to you. >> dave, thank you. now to the ongoing troubles for actress lindsay lohan. she broke down in tears yesterday after a judge in los angeles threw the book at her for repeatedly violating her probation from her 2007 drunk driving arrest. cbs news correspondent ben tracy has the report. >> i did the best i could to balance jobs and showing up. i'm sorry. >> reporter: she may be an actress but these tears seemed pretty real. >> the program has done so much to help me. >> reporter: lindsay lohan pleaded with the judge, apologizing for missing seven court-ordered alcohol counselling sessions in the past seven months. >> it's been such a long haul.

i don't want to you think that i don't respect you and your terms. >> reporter: but the judge wasn't buying it. she is fed up with the actress's string of probation violations, including a missed court date while paparazzi video showed lohan at a party in the south of france. the judge threw the book at the 24-year-old. >> 30 days in jail. reckless driving case. 30 days in jail on the first dui case -- >> reporter: 90 days in jail followed by 90 days in a rehab center. the prosecution revealed damaging evidence of lohan's absences from alcohol counseling. the actress did eventually make up the dates and said she missed them only because she was working. >> i was working, mostly in more rackco, the trip i was working with children. it wasn't a vacation. it wasn't some sort of a joke. and i respect your -- i've been taking it seriously. >> reporter: the judge disagreed. >> do you understand the terms and conditions of your probation? >> yes. >> all right.

>> reporter: for the past month, lohan has worn an alcohol monitoring bracelet around her ankle. it goes off after she drinks. after the mtv movie awards last month the bracelet went off but her attorney says it malfunctioned. >> she's been thumbing her nose at the judicial system. the judge says, the only way to get your attention is to have you go to jail. >> reporter: now the next act for this once promising actress is to surrender at the courthouse in two weeks. ben tracy, cbs news, los angeles. >> joining us now in los angeles is attorney chief correspondent for "inside edition," who was inside the courtroom yesterday. good morning. >> good morning. was this a jaw-dropping moment when the judge hands down 90 days when the prosecution was only looking for 30? >> yeah. you mentioned on the intro that the judge threw the book at her. i think that's really what she did. the judge was just fed up. she said, enough is enough. i've listened to your excuses over and over.

and i don't want to hear them anymore. this is what you're going to do. it is sad, though, i have to say, because it's clear that lindsay lohan needs help. even her own father said, send her to rehab. i think that's really what she needs. i think one of the problems is, she's not turning herself in until july 20th. if she needs help, which she clearly does, she has all of this time now to get into trouble. >> her father was on this show yesterday and said, rehab would be beneficial for her. didn't necessarily want to see her go to jail. but do you think this is a way of the court saying, you know you think you haven't disrespected the court, have you disrespected the court by not obeying any of the guidelines? >> look, the judge sets the ground rules for their courtroom. the judge had it within her power to do this. i respect the judge's decision. i do think that in this case -- this does remind me a lot of the robert downey jr. situation. where you have a very talented actor who seems to be on a self-destructive path and needs help.

and we saw robert downey jr.'s redemption and hopefully we will see lindsay lohan's redemption before something horrible happens. >> judge sentences her to 90 days. how much of that time does she really do? is that one of those, you're in for 84 minutes and you're out or will she serve time? >> the sheriff's department said women typically serve 25% of their sentence. you're looking at probably 25, 30 days. that time is going to be separate, much like paris hilton's incarceration, because lindsay lohan is a celebrity. because of that, she's a target in jail. so, she will be kept essentially in solitairy confinement. >> not to be too graphic but reports say she had a little something written on her fingernails in nail polish. can you elaborate on that a little bit? >> it was an expletive. you can only see it -- i didn't even notice it yesterday. i saw her. you could see it on a telephoto

lens. look, she's 23 years old, turning 24, tonight is her birthday celebration, believe it or not. i don't think it was done intentionally to thumb her nose at the judge or the system. >> you really don't think that was done intentionally? sounds ridiculous. >> i don't know that she was trying to send a message to the judge. i really believe she was shocked yesterday. i believed her tears. she's an excellent actress but i don't think she was acting. i think she was stunned and contrite. >> a not so happy birthday. thank you for taking the time. we appreciate it. >> my pleasure. >> now here's erica. the frantic search for a little girl in missouri ended successfully. 4-year-old disappeared on monday but she was found alive overnight. tara mergener reports. >> reporter: shortly after this vigil, prayers were answered, 4-year-old alyssa maier was found 70 miles from the

frontyard where she disappeared on monday. she was believed to have been abducted by a stranger, described as a 20-something white man in a beat up dark sedan. the only witness, her 5-year-old brother. >> she's a really good girl. always smiling. >> reporter: neighbors told cbs news of a chaotic scene monday night with alyssa's grief-stricken mother sobbing in the street and heading off in her own vehicle in pure suit of her child. she and her brother were alone outside only minutes as her parents went into the kitchen to prepare dinner. but she was gone in seconds. an amber alert was issued immediately and 75 to 100 police officers from both missouri and illinois were quickly joined in the search by at least 50 volunteers and 30 fbi agents. >> this is a little girl that's missing. >> reporter: alisa's disappearance affected everyone in town, up to the chief of police. >> i don't personally know

lawyers say the exchange could take place tomorrow. a gun belonging to security detail for israeli prime minister netanyahu is missing this morning. netanyahu met with president obama yesterday at the white house. the missing gun was in luggage that was supposed to be routed from new york to washington, but ended up in los angeles. it's unclear if the missing firearm, a 9-millimeter pistol, was stolen or misplaced. chairman of the republican national committee, michael steele s in hot water with his own party after speaking out against the war in afghanistan. some are calling for his resignation. you may be surprised who they want to replace him. cbs news senior white house correspondent bill plante has more. good morning, bill. >> reporter: good morning, betty. would you believe, sarah palin? that's right. there's been a buzz in republican circles suggesting that sarah palin should take over the republican national committee. >> i know that you want us to get to washington, d.c., to shake things up.

dr. jennifer ashton is here with a disturbing few trend. >> what will these teens do next? with the cost of health care rising, susan koeppen has information on how you can cut your medical bills by haggling. talking them down. first, though, we want to get you the latest on the little boy who has been missing now for more than a month, kyron horman. his mother making another desperate plea, an emotional desperate plea for kyron's stepmother to cooperate with police. cbs news correspondent john blackstone reports. >> reporter: kyron horman's mother looked into a tv camera with a message for her missing son. >> kyron, we love you and miss you. we remain here working hard every day to get you home. >> reporter: desire and her husband, tony young, a medford, oregon, police detective, says the day he was missing he was supposed to be coming to visit them for the weekend. >> i was supposed to take him

out on my boat fishing that day, the saturday following, so that didn't happen. obviously. and that just kills me. >> reporter: desiree young appealed to terri horman to tell everything she knows. >> please cooperate with investigators and the attorneys to help bring kyron home. >> reporter: terri is the last known person to see kyron. on june 4th she dropped him off at skyline elementary and snapped this photo during a science fair. according to school officials, kyron never made it to his first class. when he didn't step off his school bus later that day, a 911 call launched the largest search in state's history. last week kyron's father kaine filed divorce papers and got a a restraining order terri when it was alleged she approached a landscaper to murder her husband. she has not been named a suspect

in kyron's disappearance but his family is now clearly looking to terri for some answers. >> to terri, you need to do what is right. >> reporter: john blackstone, cbs news, san francisco. >> and joining us now is criminal profiler casey jordan. good to have you with us this morning. >> great to be here. >> that simple statement we just heard from desire young, kyron's mother, terri, you need to do what is right. what do you think the police have shared? sdwlee we know in the last few day this is murder for hire plot has completely changed the flavor of things. and believe desire knows more than terri is saying but probably under police advice they've been strategizing keep your friend close but enemies closer. they are hoping terri close. now they have the murder for hire plot and she's lawyered up, it will be more difficult for them to get more information for

missing kyron. >> for folks who don't know, there was news she allegedly approached a landscaper about helping to kill her husband. >> yes. >> now we're learning this morning -- in fact, the oregonian is reporting that detectives deem that plot credib credible, they send the landscaper back with a wire and undercover officer and he offers him $10,000 or threatens to go to police. she shut him down. the fact that police sent him back to talk about, hey, possibly killing your husband, that's a pretty big development. >> it's huge. it raises the most obvious question, is that related to the missing 7-year-old. . she was plotting to get rid of her husband, how does that go with getting rid of the hospital child? the problem is now that they have the evidence with a wire that she really did try to hire this landscaper, it makes it even more difficult to get to the root of the problem of, where is kyron.

>> you mentioned keep your friends closer, enemies closer. working with authorities. a lot is orchestrated as to how and when the parents speak out. why have them wait for so long in the beginning? it was really weeks until mom and dad came forward. >> i think it was a strategy that may have backfired. it's always a gm bell. presenting that united front with the four parents there, all strate strategy. i think desire has been full of rage against terri. since the beginning she's been a suspect. now that they are some evidence, it really is going to wind down. now she has no interest it talking at all. >> she hasn't officially been named a suspect, of course. so, what kind of evidence or what kind of information would authorities need to have to change anyone in this case or to name them a suspect? >> obviously, you need to find the child. sadly, dead or alive, that will give you evidence because he'll either have a story or he'll are forensic evidence. really what i think they're hoping and why they get desire to go out and do emotional pleas, she's not talking to

kyron, she's talking to terri. a confession would be the fastest way to get to the root of the truth. >> these two women have a history. they were very good friends. terri helped take care of kyron when desire had medical procedures in canada, when he was a very little boy. does that change things when they were such good friends? >> i think the sense of betrayal on behalf of the biological mother is very complex. i think she did hold out hope until the eleventh hour that terri was not involved. i think in her heart, thing weren't fitting into place. none of her story has worked out. it has to be dim. a, she's missing her child. b, she has to face the fact that her former best friend may be responsible for her son's demise. >> great to have you here. >> good to be here. >> dave, another check of the weather. >> let's go to the maps and see what's happening across the country. clear and

than biting your friends. >> that's right, you would think so. this is kind of the modern day version of the hick y but we have to remember, any time there's a break in the skin, especially when you're talking about the human mouth, it's loaded with bacteria. that can be an entry for that bacteria to get into the skin. you can set up for potentially some serious skin infections. >> it's one thing if this is kind of a playful nuzzle but these kids are actually drawing blood. >> yeah. this is a human bite. again, any parent will tell you, a lot of toddlers and babies go through a biting phase. that can be not only disturbing ee possession alley but physically and painful and can cause some damage. this is now creating a soft tissue injury with either blood, teeth marks or just a significant bruise in the area. and it can be potentially serious. >> this has tetanus shot written all over it. >> right. >> let's talk about how you can tell if it's serious. >> first, the area where the injury occurred, if there's any

swelling, redness, pus coming from the wound or pain that persists. also, where the injury occurred. anything on the face, near the eye or over the hands and feet, which means a joint is involved, potentially much more serious location. and then in whom did the bite occur? anyone who has a potentially weakened immune system can be much more susceptible to a significant infection. >> how do you treat a human bite? >> well, first, you want to wash the area very well with soap and water. you don't want to use anything like betadine or peroxide. in severe cases you might need oral antibiotics or in worst cases hospitalization with inva venous antibiotics. >> is this a trend strictly brought on by "twilight" and all of these vampire tv shows? >> we don't know. not only obviously are there

you hear a number like that, your chance for your marriage politicking up by 75% if it's happening around you. i mean, is that realistic? >> it's a little high but it's representing a psychological phenomenon we see, which is con t -- idea that people who do things around you, like people who drink, hang and drink together, and sometimes people want to get a divorce when they see people getting a divorce. >> this is a serious step in a relationship to be that influenced by something, ian, seems like a fairly significant, if this marry measures out. >> i think if you have a weak marriage, you're particularly vulnerable when one of your friend gets divorced. so, i think we are influenced. i think it introduces the what-if factor, the doubt factor, like, oh, my god, they had such a perfect marriage and suddenly he went off and had a cries and had an affair. could it happen to me? should i be snooping on my partner's e-mails?

in that sense, the doubt, the what-if, the anxiety, that's the contagious part. >> that does -- >> that happened with tiger woods as well. people had this conversation, could this be happening to me? maybe i should be looking at snooping around to see what's going on because if it's happening to her, could it be -- could i my husband be cheating and i didn't know? >> there's interesting numbers when you look at people around them and their influence. if you have a divorced sibling -- we have some of these numbers -- your chances for getting divorced are actually 22% higher. a divorced coworker, this one struck me, 55%. and then a friend of a friend who's going through a divorce, you'll see your chances increed by a third, 33%. a divorced coworker, is that because we simply spend, ian, so much time with the people we work with? >> i think people in your life become influencers. i think throughout life in any situation you have to think about who do i hang out with, are they advocates of marriage? are they enemies of marriage? and you have to pick the people you hang around with.

i think, you know, the workplace especially, you know, sitting around lunch, talking about coffee, i think that that is sort of a viral atmosphere. certainly for gossip and certainly for other kinds of behavior. >> that does turn into the office gossip, right? if so and so is getting divorced, it's not like people aren't going to talk about it. >> you look at their life and you say, how similar is my situation to that? if this is the wags they're choosing, maybe this is a viable solution for me as well. >> sometimes divorce really can come as a shock to everyone, except for the couple. and perfect case in point was al and tipper gore. they had just celebrated decades of marriage. and then all of a sudden we hear they're getting divorced. not long after their daughter karenna comes out and says, my divorce is ending. they didn't look at the relationship between parents and kids, but could there be a connection f your parent are getting divorced it comes through with the kids? >> your parents are certainly

models for how divorce and marriage should work. a lot of times when your parents get divorced, you get divorced. chances are they didn't necessarily time this together but i'm sure they talked about it. like i said, when you talk about how marriages work and what's going on, a father would have a huge influence about how well you could manage your current relationship. >> when it comes to couples with children, ian, they notice that those couples are less influenced by people around them getting divorced. >> yeah. well, first of all -- i have two kids. we're too busy to do anything but think about the kids so forget the relationship. we'll deal with that in 20 years. i think parents do, when you have children, you tend to stay together for the children. i think it's to surprise that so many parents choose to get divorced once their kids are off to college. i think parents feel a responsibility to stay together for their kids. so, they are going to be less vulnerable. that doesn't mean they're any more happy and it doesn't necessarily even mean it's the right choice always to stay in a marriage because of the kids,

"early show" style contributor katrina is here with us this morning. great to see you. how are you? >> very good. >> does the heat pose challenges for the fashion folks out there? >> it does. summer is supposed to be the most fun and simple time to dressed but with temperatures over 100 degrees it's more challenging getting dressed in the morning but not impossible. >> dark color suit, did i go with the right call or -- >> absolutely not.

i was thinking dave with the weather forecast, he was right on. go, dave. >> this makes it obvious for some, but let's reiterate. >> it's important to keep in mind. dark colors are going to make you feel hotter and a lot of us know that but actual colored clothing can reflect heat and sun away from your body and help you maintain a more normalized body temperature. synthetic or manmade fabrics like polyester, rayon, those will keep heat closer to your body. they won't wick away the national moisture. tight clothing is not going to allow the air to circulate. summer's all about being breezy and comfortable. >> let's talk about suits, with the exception of a birthday suit, guys have to wear suits to work. what's the best option out there? dark was not the right thing to do. >> as we said, dave price did it right with a light-colored suit. i also love a seersucker suit this season. this is great for any guy who needs to wear a suit to the office but you want to keep the fabric in mind.

you want to look for a lightweight cotton. find something that is unlined. and you really want to keep your colors light. the white shirt underneath. wear it with something fun like a boat shoe. if you're not a guy who wants to go for all this, think of something simple. a basic khaki suit. >> thumbs up or thumbs down, mr. model? you like the look? what about something more business casual. in my line of work it would be tough to pull that off. >> you can keep the blazer, wear a pair of khaki shorts, go bermuda or wear a crisp short sleeve shirt and a pair of nicely pressed khaki shorts. >> the shoes, not a big fan. >> those add a little flare in the morning. come on. >> let's talk about the ladies, what they can and cannot get away with at the office. let's start with the don'ts. >> it's hot. we to want wear as little as possible but it's important not to wear sleeveless at the office. it seems like, i have this great

dress that's sleeveless, it's not appropriate. you can layer it underneath a blazer or sweater, that work works with the air conditioning. flip-flops, always a no-no. and too much skin is important. >> it's all about work at hand. are shorts appropriate? >> shorts are appropriate. it's very important to choose those shorts wisely. choose something a little more tailored. these have a built-in built, longer, have a cuff. perfect alternative for shorts -- sus excuse me, for a skirt. also pairing it with a blazer on top, that's the way to do it. on the bottom you say summer. on the top you say appropriate. >> these are shorts but since this young lady is about 5'11", these could be long pant for some. >> yes, a floor-length version. >> what's some of the other options we do have? >> also what you want to do, this outfit we're loving this top from loft, the an pal print is great. also, you want to keep it covered up a little bit, so if you're showing too much skin on

bottom, you want to keep it covered on top. >> appropriate for the office? >> absolutely appropriate for the office. some dress codes will just say no to short. >> some other options to stay cool? >> for the weekend, one of my favorite looks is the maxi dress. that is something that you can wear with flats. it's comfortable. it's breezy. cassidy looks great in this one from victoria's secret. what i love about it, there's nothing tight. it's not -- but you can also sit down, with your legs crossed at a picnic it's comfortable, the ultimate summer look. >> this is the more casual look? >> casual look for the weekend. instant glam. you're not lopy. >> we don't have any models with hats, but would you recommend something ala kentucky derby? >> it does help keep the sun off of your head and off your face but it still does trap heat. in extreme temperatures, stay away from hats. >> you have to look out for some, too, because some may not look too hot. let's talk about shoes.

great to see you. >> great to see you. >> i love what you've done with the place. it looks fantastic. >> it's just like being at the beach at home, right? >> i feel like i'm there now. >> i can tell by your tan you have been at the beach. >> i've spent a little time there. >> that's great. every wednesday this month i'll bring you a staycation. for tonight's dinner you're going to the beach. we're going to start off with one of my favorites, a fried fisherman's platter. super yummy. get whatever looks good at the fish market. it's simple and easy. i think a lot of people are intimidated by fried food but it's easy. >> simplicity is key. what fish do we have here? >> well, we have some blue, oysters, shrimp, calamari. our batter, you probably have everything in your pantry already to make this. all-purpose flour, cornmeal, which will give it a nice crunch. garlic powder -- >> the whole thing?

>> the whole thing. put it all in there. some black pepper. and paprika. and then there's salt. and a little baking powder. the baking powder will make that batter puff up a little bit and it will look really nice. let's get it all in there. super simple. the key to not making this messy is to have one hand for the wet and one hand for the dry. so, i'm going to take the fish into the milk did -- >> just regular milk? >> regular milk. put it in the batter and turn it with my dry hand. >> kind of like french toast. >> exactly. goes right into the fryer. i have this at 375 degrees. same with our shrimp. you want to do a couple since -- >> scallops, squid -- >> delicious. i love fried seafood. it makes me think of summertime. you know, the great thing is that it only takes about two or three minutes in the oil to get nice and brown. and then these are great tools to have around, these spiders, to put everything out. >> you literally have to if you're doing this, correct?

>> you have to. >> how long -- >> about two to three minutes. >> basically a nice browning -- >> look at that. the shrimp is actually already done. my oil's so hot. doesn't that look delicious? >> it does. doesn't look too, too fried. that's another thing that probably scares people as well. >> right. it seems greasy -- >> it's hot. do i want a lot of fried food? >> it's delicious. if you're doing a beach dinner, play beach boy music, bob marley and get the feeling of being there. for our fried seafood we'll serve it with a couple of traditional sauces, cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. these are easy to make. you probably have everything right in your refrigerator. for, cocktail sauce -- this is frying. i'm going to get this out of there. you take those out. for the cocktail saucist just chili sauce, ketchup and horseradish. the tartar sauce is mayonnaise,

pickle relish, lemon juice. very easy and delicious and tastes so much better than what you would buy at the store. you can mix in different ingredients, like chopped artichoke hearts if you want an artichoke tartar sauce, a little hot sauce to bring it some heat. >> may i? >> go for it. of course. i love it when you eat. how do you like it? >> it's great. >> great, right? it tastes really light, even for fried food. >> that's what i meant. you wouldn't think of it as being fried unhealthy but it tastes really good. >> corn on the cob at its peak, it's summertime. you have to enjoy that great corn from the farmer's market. i'm putting my mine on the grill and making a mixture of mayonnaise and cheese with chili powder, comes out like that. >> you didn't do anything to the corn beforehand, did you? >> a little oil. i love you're eating corn on the cob on tv. >> i love corn on the cob.

>> it's delicious. you can't have a staykrchlgt a at -- staycation. this is traditional in the caribbean. a little spiced rum. >> a little bit? >> well, two ounces. orange juice, pineapple juice so we're feeling really fruity, and coconut milk. this will make it have that nice, tropical flavor. just shake it up. there we go. and into our cocktail glasses. i think i feed -- i was going to say, i need your man power. okay. so, fill up our glasses. the key to this is a little dusting of fresh nutmeg, freshly ground. put a little in there. garnish with some pineapple. >> and an orange. >> an orange slice. >> we put that umbrella on there. >> yeah, make it nice and tropical, if i can get it. i'm having trouble today, chris.
