primary day. voters head to the polls and candidates scramble for every last vote. >> a closer look at the races expected to go down to the wire. hello again, i'm jessica kartalija. >> >> i'm don scott. today, they're campaigning up until the last minute. the top candidates for baltimore city state's attorney met with the voters before they cast their votes. er wjz-13 and andrea fujii are live at cross country elementary. that's one of the polling stations. >> reporter: good afternoon, jessica and to everyone. some are calling this the race to make the city safer. some voters are casting their ballots as to who they think will do the best job.

voters turned out early making a final push for the city state's attorney candidate bernstein and outside of this middle school, jessamy greeted voters. we think we've run a professional campaign. >> i was talking about the issue and continue to talk about the issues because that's what's important to the voters. >> reporter: both have received last minute endorsements. jessamy has support from city ministers and bernstein has billy murphy on his side. >> there have been so many disasters in that office and failed opportunities. it's time for baltimore to get something better than that. >> reporter: each has their idea on who will make the city safer. bernstein stresses jessamy hasn't been tough enough on repeat offenders. >> >> people are frustrated and

what to see a change. >> we've done a great job, of course, over the last years, we've reduced crime. we'll continue to do that. in the end, voters have the final say. >> reporter: and among other endorsements jessamy is endorsed by elijah cummings and bernstein has the support of the police union. >> and polls will stay open until 8:00 tonight. and another race. the democratic primary for the baltimore executive. bartenfelder and kamenetz are battling it out. they've faced off on the radio to reach 800,000 people and the economy is a popular topic of decision for them both. we talk about the economy and that's on everyone's mind. they want to make sure they're working and they have income to pay their bills.

show that is baltimore leads the nation in rape reports dismissed by the police. before the sun investigation, the number was down 15%. and today, a hearing is taking place to discuss how the police departments across the country report rape cases. a search is underway for a 5-year-old boy who may be with a man facing federal drug charges. the boy was taken by tony robinson. he's been in a custody battle with the boy's mother. when he found out he was not the boy's biological father, he ran off with the child. a nightmare is almost over for this american after 14 months in a prison in iran. minutes ago, she boarded a flight out of iran.

>> reporter: iran's english channel news channel announced her release. >> one of the three citizens detained in iran has been freed. >> reporter: they were arrested and jailed while hiking along the border between iran and iraq. they were charged with spying. after days of conflicting reports, the tv said this morning she was released on $500,000 bail and her mother is already waiting for her nearby. yesterday, her family asked for the bail to be reduced they said they didn't have the money. >> reporter: the u.s. governments don't have relations with iran so the swiss are handling it. officials told cbs news they didn't want to comment until after they left the iranian air space. her mother says she has serious medical factors and the others remain in custody.
