scene by a 911 call. >> reporter: no one answered the door at the home of here. it's where 66-year-old cecilia mitchell lived and friday, died, unfortunately, allegedly from the hands of her niece. >> she was transported to shock trauma, where regrettable, she has succumbed to her injuries. police got to the house after a chilling 911 call. "my aunt is lying on the floor dying because i hit her with the club." >> the call was placed by the victim's niece, who advised she had beaten her aunt with the club, a device usually used to secure vehicles. >> reporter: according to the charging documents, cecilia mitchell was struck in the head multiple times. d'lana simmons was still inside when they arrived. she said she hit her aunt with a club and there was blood on it.

simmons was in the dining room. her hands were covered with blood and blood spatter patterns were on her clothing and skin. police say simmons, whose name is on a mailbox here, told the 9-1-1 operator, quote, i hurt my aunt and i don't know why. she's being held in police custody on murder charges. >> reporter: and at this point, police are still looking for a motive in the attack. back to you. >> all right, thank you very much, pat warren. >> in tonight's campaign 2010 report. the race for governor has been a close one since former governor bob ehrlich announced he would challenge governor martin o'malley. but tonight, one candidate has an edge. vic has the newly released rasmussen poll. >> tonight, it is a rematch. and tonight, rasmussen research shows that o'malley is leading ehrlich, 57% to 47%. that's the first time the

democratic incumbent has reached the 50% mark since rasmussen began tracking in february. >> in the 2006 election, o'malley defeated ehrlich by a 53% to 46% margin. in economic news, a national panel says the long evaluate recession since world war ii officially ended in june 2009. the national bureau of economic research says the recession lasted 18 months from its beginning in december 2007. previously, the longest post- war downturns were in 1973 to 85. 1981 to 1982. and each of those lasted six to eight months. and news comes amidst speculation that the federal reserve will relaunch its rate- setting program. a september rally extended into its fourth week. here's a look at closing numbers. s&p and nasdaq also posted significant gains. the ravens had a troubled weekend on the field in cincinnati, falling to the

thank you, bob. in tonight's healthwatch, genetically engineered fish from your grocery store, not far from becoming a reality. the fard says they're safe -- fda says they're safe to eat. the administration is now deciding whether the so-called franken-fish should be sold in stores. >> reporter: it is not just a fish story. you could soon be eating genetically-engineered salmon. they came the genetically- engineered eggs can grow full- market sized fish in half the time as a regular salmon. >> we could bring an industry back to the united states and provide americans a safe and sustainable high-quality seafood. >> reporter: the food and drug administration agrees that the salmon is safe. but is waiting before approving the fish for sale. food safety groups disagree.

they call it franken fish. >> we believe the fda hasn't done all of its homework yet. >> reporter: even if the government does approve the genetically-altered fish, it won't be available to the consumers for a couple of years. and many are skeptical. >> you're fooling with nature. and any time you do that, you're taking a big chance, especially when it's something for human consumption. >> reporter: no one seemed anxious to try the new salmon. >> i'm scared of it. >> reporter: the fda hasn't said when it will make its decision. but both sides agree, if the salmon is approved, other ge98ically-modified foods will be -- nenetically modified foods will be right behind t. >> it would be the first genetically-engineered animal approved for human consumption fit passes. there is good news and bad news from the transportation department. what the new numbers show.

it was horrible. >> reporter: students flooded the campus with blue, 14-year- old joey detriment's favorite color. the freshman was killed friday night, while trying to walk across the street. at this point in the investigation, police do not believe it the driver was either speedingor drinking-- speeding or drinking at the time of the crash. >> the crosswalk was prohibiting any pedestrians from walking at the time of this incident because north and southbound traffic had a steady green light. >> reporter: the corner is now transformed into a memorial. countless notes, flowers, and trinkets decorate the sidewalk. he was a popular jv linebacker for the football team. >> he was such a great athlete. to be taken away, it's just so sad. ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: detriment was also a songwriter, a pianist, a

it was the big biggest ones i've seen. >> donna was lucky, after a water main broke flooding streets. basements were flooded and needed to be completely pumped out. >> it was horrible. you know? some people had bedrooms in their basements. some had just fixed their basements up for family rooms and stuff. and they got wiped out. >> never. i never saw something -- thought something like that. frances ebert's basement was a total loss. >> i had to get people to come and get all of the water out of my basement. >> residents say one year later, their neighborhood is back to normal am but they live with the fear it could happen again. >> it's always possible it could happen again. certain insurance companies,

of foul play. igor, still a force to be reckoned with. bermuda saw wind gusts up to 90 miles an hour. >> reporter: igor's eye passed just 40 miles east of bermuda. this monser storm was downgraded just dawn on monday. but it still packed a punch. >> they whipped trees and power lines to almost 20,000 people on this island of only 6,000. the streets were under several inches of water and littered with tree branches and other debris. residents of bermuda, long used to tropical weather, left the streets desserted. >> safety first. we can always rebuild. as bermudans, we already know how to rebuild. >> reporter: in fact, there are strict building codes.

for the most part, it was the tourists who ventured outside to witness the hurricane. >> i'm not scared at all. i think it's an awesome force of nature that if you can experience once in a lifetime, it is amazing. >> reporter: officials will be out in force to assess the damage. but so far, there is no word of any serious injuries. the remnants of igor are expected to affect the east coast through tomorrow. its waves are already being weighed. that despite the fact the storm is still out to city. but it's been sitting out in the atlantic. it's about 450 miles east. still a category 1. still winds at 75 miles an hour.

bridge in new york city, could cause even more problems for commuters this rush hour. the dramatic flames came from under a lift bridge, which carries all metro-north trains. train service had to be halted for several hours this afternoon. as firefighters worked to put the blaze out. once the fires were put out, firefighter his to check the bridge for the all-clear. new services for the man accused in a series of stabbings across the state. elias is now facing four counts of attempted murder. he previously had been charged in one case. the attempted murder of a 26- year-old man. police say he attacked more than a dozen people in michigan, ohio, and virginia. he's being held without bail. a registered sex offender, wanted in the death of a daughter of a police chief is arrested. investigators say the body of valerie hamilton was found saturday night in a storage unit in southeast charlotte. a warrant was issued for

michael harvey, who police believe was the man seen leaving a bar last week. police found him asleep at a friend's house in niagara falls and arrested him without incident. tragedy in texas. a popular high school football player dies after collapsing on a field during the game. it is the third such death in just weeks more on steps being taken to keep players safe. it seemed like a regular friday light under the lights. 17-year-old reggie garrett was leading the them to victory when tragedy struck. >> i was like, i don't know what's going on. >> the 17-year-old collapsed on the ground and was pronounced dead before the game was over. >> it's just really hard. you think of all of the good times you had with him. >> garrett was -- had a history of seizures, but was screened

and deemed healthy to play. 13-year-old and 15-year-old both collapsed and died after practice. and hayward dennison, a 17-year- old oregon high school player, was saved by a nurse who was in the stand, after he suffered a sudden heart attack last week. brian robinson from the national athletic trainers association says there is one question every parent has to ask. who is taking care of my kids? >> high school football still tops the list of most dangerous sports for serious injury. 12 football deaths were linked to high school last year. and compared to other high school athletes, football players are 10 times more likely to suffer heat-related illnesses. >> all of these things are a matter of education. and i think that we are making progress. if we still have a ways to go. now, despite the increased awareness, the requirement for

medical screening still varies from state to state. paris hilton strikes a deal with prosecutors this morning. the 29-year-old heiress pled guilty. she now admits she lied to police when she said the drugs weren't hers. under the terms of her plea deal, she must serve a year of probation and avoid a felony charge. hilton was arrested in august after the winn resort after a small bag of cocaine was found in her purse. it's the 200th anniversary of cho pin's birthday. and some were treated to a celebration. an outdoor show in front of buck rest's parliament attracted fans, young and old. organizers hope the new event will bring a new audience to the event.
