judge's personment -- punishment for that man. >> reporter: it's too graphic. so we blurred the image of this 4-year-old miniature pincher beaten to death with a pipe. in august, he was charged with several counts of animal cruelty, after an officer found the dog tied up in a garbage bag in the bed of a truck. >> this is a case we thought called out for punishment. >> reporter: the head of baltimore's task force was upset to learn that this week, a city judge agreed to drop the case if he spent 50 hours volunteering at the maryland spca. the stunned head of the maryland spca says no way. >> it is our job to protect animals. and we want to make sure our staff and volunteers are safe. so this volunteer service will be denied. >> we were just incredibly frustrated that the state's attorney's office chose not to prosecute a case where there

was just overwhelming evidence to convict the perpetrator. >> seems there is always monday morning quarterbacking. >> reporter: pat jessamy blames police for failing to properly advise him of his miranda rights. she says that they have not enough evidence to prove that chambers beat his dog after it bit his wife. >> we have to do and follow the law. and in this case, we knew we could not prove this case beyond a reasonable doubt. >> you would never order a child molester to go through community service with the boy scouts. we don't think it's appropriate for a person charged with animal abuse to do community service at an animal shelter. >> again, the spca says they will not allow this man to do any community service volunteer work here. so that means chambers and his attorney may now have to go back to the judge and ask for a new sentence.

gusts over 30, 40 miles an hour. and brief, heavy downpours and lightning as well. another batch in pennsylvania. that might move into northern maryland later tonight. we have an advisory for the possibility of still more thunderstorms. until about 10:00 tonight for the entire region, west of the bay. and you folks in eastern shore and delaware, until 11:00 tonight. severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect. denise? thank you, bob. security concerns prompt changes at baltimore's oldest mall. tonight, police are working with stores at mondaw min mall. police already have two suspects in custody. >> reporter: at mondawmin mall since mid-july, there have been three robberies. even a shop that sells perfume has been hit. police say they are working with store owners to security. >> meeting with merchants on their store surveillance equipment.

and the placement of certain cameras. >> over the weekend, elite gold and diamond was robbed. and the manager tells wjz today, it's the second time in a month they have been hit. >> reporter: people outside the mall today say it is a concern, especially since guns were used in some of those holdups. >> it does bother me. because i come out here with my daughter. so i'm kind of standoffish now. >> the mall says it continues to work closely with western district police to provide a safe environment for its shoppers and merchants. as well as policemen patrolling the center. police believe there are three separate groups committing the crimes. >> two of the suspect groups displayed false weapons. another group pretends to buy a watch and pulls out a handgun. police identified two suspects so far and are searching for them. this woman says she was a

victim just outside the mall. >> my pocketbook was snatched right here. they have a police station right here. and it happened right at this bus stop. >> reporter: in west baltimore, suzanne collins, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, police say they want to stress, despite these mondawmin holdups, commercial robberies are down in the city. captain mike perry with more. >> reporter: it wasn't clear initially what firefighters had here. a large column of smoke could be seen in the sparks area. firefighters dispatched to the feign,000 block of yoho road. off of belfast in northern baltimore county. excuse me. firefighters arrived on the scene and found a container burning here. apparently it is unknown what was burning, but firefighters were able to knock down the smoke and flames rather easily at this point. they have several pieces of equipment. this is on a farm in the area. and at this point, it's unclear what sparked the fire.

a maryland soldier is among those killed in a helicopter crash in afghanistan. >> brendan loony was a former lacrosse player at the naval academy and lived in silver springs. loony graduated from the naval academy in 2004 and became a navy seal. he was one of nine u.s. military personnel killed in the crash in southern afghanistan. there is no word on the cause of the crash. but early reports say there was some sort of mechanical failure, not enemy fire. vic, back to you. >> his body is expected to arrive at dover air force base tomorrow. he called himself hitler. a white supremacist who attacked an african american fisherman in a popular baltimore park. just a few moments ago, calvin lockner pleads guilty in the case. mike schuh has more on the reaction. >> reporter: you can call calvin lockner a lot of things. aryan brotherhood member, and now convict. >> reporter: a year ago, james

priv at and his wife went fishing here. this man and two others approached. >> asked them if they had any food or water. they said no. >> the men didn't leave. but miss privet did. and her husband was right behind. >> the individuals attacked him. they punched him, kicked him, and beat him with a stick. and eventually took his car and left. >> reporter: the prosecutor says that calvin lockner told police, that they never would have beaten and jumped mr. privet, had he been white. >> the first to see the 67-year- old, a security guard. >> i was like, oh, my god, are you okay? and he was crying. and there was blood everywhere and his eye was hanging out. and he said the boys came from behind, and were just baking him -- banging him, knocked him on the ground, and kicked him. took his keys and took off. >> calvin lockner has a tattoo

of hitler and underneath the picture says "he lives ." he is accused of carjacking, assault, and the assault of of a corrections officer. >> this is a plea agreement we feel good about. because we're going to get this person off the street for 31 years. >> reporter: mr. privet and his family are expected here on monday to give a victim impact statement. and then the judge is expected to accept his plea and the 31- year sentence. reporting live downtown, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news remember. >> there are two other defendants in this case. one is a minor who went to juvenile court. the other defendant's trial was supposed to begin on monday. but it's expected there will be a delay as his attorney is in the middle of councilmember ken harris's murder trial. a maryland state trooper, gunned down, working security to make extra money. tonight, new details on what led up to his murder. kai is live in the newsroom with more. at a preliminary hearing today, a police detective testified that a man escorted out of an appleby's restaurant,

later returned and killed trooper wesley brown. it happened in forestville, prince george's county. cyril williams faces first- degree murder charges. the detective says that williams waited near a tree and shot at brown as he left the appleby's restaurant. a second man, anthony milton, also faces charges in the case. police say the gun used in the murder was united states found in -- was found in his backyard. >> and trooper brown who you just saw a moment ago, was just 24 years old. hundreds of family and friends turn out for the family of a funeral of a popular harford county high student killed in a tragic accident. joey dentriment. and weijia jiang has more on the service. >> during the service which lasted about an hour, nearly 2,000 friends and family members came together not only to remember joey dentriment but to celebrate his life. >> reporter: at the mountain christian church in joppa, tears spilled, hearts ached, friends comforted each other.

on wednesday morning, some 1500 people poured into the funeral service for 14-year-old joey dentriment, who was trying to cross the street at bynam and red pump road. >> number 1 thing i always remember about joey is his smile. no matter what. and his hugs. and he was always there for everyone. no matter what. >> members of the football team wheeled his casket in. the captain of the jv defense, dentriment, number 30, thrived on the field. but loved ones say his true passion was playing and singing music. at the service, his mentor sang songs and lyrics they wrote together. >> it was like, you wrote this? you never see that from a 14- year-old, ever. like things you talk about when you learn when you're 30 years old. >> reporter: we talked to many of the friends who say the past few days, have been difficult. for many of them, it's the

they waiting sure. this is affecting route 136. west of white ford. harford county. time now to check in with bob. >> we tracked that storm and wind gusts. take a look at radar. and up to the north of us now. a couple of small cells across northern baltimore, northern carroll county. that also just popped up. thunderstorms moving in your direction. and that one cell. just in fact, around pretty boy dan area. just moved through the manchester region. because northern baltimore county, and portions of carroll county, off to the east of millersville now. and also little batch has moved into northern delaware. one shower to the east of portions of washington, d.c.

just noticed that thing right down there. we'll keep tracking this. still a chance of activity tonight. until maybe about 10:00. take a look at the watches. the entire state actually under severe thunderstorm watch until 11:00 eastern shore. 10:00 west of the bay. that stuff could still create strong activity, later on this evening. right now pretty quiet. except for the few isolated cells. 94 in hagerstown now. 91 in washington. they get up to 94. 77, ocean city. and a 79. dew point is way up, compared to where it was. actually feels like 96 degrees out there. we got to 91. south winds keep us in the warm air. at least through the end of the week. looks like no big changes. tomorrow, slightly dryer. and a little cooler. because this front to the north may just get through the baltimore region with the showers tonight. it may just kind of lay across northern maryland. so to our north, it will be

it is just after 6:30, 88 degrees and partly sunny. good evening. thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. on the hot seat, congressional lawmakers are grilling executives from two egg companies at the center of the massive egg recall this summer. joel brown reports from washington, they also heard from people sickened by the tainted eggs. this 77-year-old colorado grandmother went into septic shock and nearly died, after eating a salmonella-tainted egg in july. >> it was fever, vomiting, diary a. >> reporter: carol lobato is one of the 1600 victims of the

salmonella outbreak. it sparked a recall of a half a million eggs. now, congress wants to know what went wrong. >> americans should be able to have their eggs "over easy," without having to worry about the eggs making them queasy. >> reporter: the owner of one of the egg farms at the center of the outbreak has a history of safety violations in three states that goes back 20 years. >> reporter: when fda inspectors visited hillendale farms, they found live rodents and mice at both sides. -- farms. at wright county egg, they found manure so deep, it was leaking through a foundation. and both locations, they found maggots and flies. the owner offered apologies for the victims sickened by his eggs. >> i have prayed several times each day for all of these people, for improved health. >> reporter: but carol lobato wants more than apologies. >> clean up his eggs.

clean up his chicken farm. he knows better than that. >> reporter: lobato and other victims urge congress to push through even tougher regulations for food safety. in washington, joel brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, no deaths have been reported due to the outbreak. but for every case reported, there may be 30 unreported. stunning allegations against the prominent pastor of a mega church near atlanta. >> reporter: two young men have filed lawsuits against bishop eddie long, claiming they were coerced into having sex with them. long's attorney calls the lawsuits a shakedown attempt and denies all of the allegations. the men who filed the suits were 17 and 18 years old at the time. and say long abused his spiritual authority by seducing them with cars, money, and expensive trips. this is at the church, which reenforces how absolutely

with the drug that delays the progression of m.s. until now, all treatment options involved shots. but wednesday, the fda approved a new drug that is ingested daily. gelenia is the first approved bill to treat the disorder. >> someone comes to me and says, i can't stand these injections, i just won't take these injections any longer, then they're perfectly suitable for the pill. >> multiple sclerosis causes the immune system to attack the bane and spinal cord, producing problems such as numbness and pain. >> side effects could include a lower heart rate, resistance to infections. >> there are changes in the back of the eye, in the retina that have to be monitored. and it can affect liver function. we have to watch for all of those. >> reporter: daggett is going to check with his doctor for possible side effects. but he says he is ready to try

it. >> it's easy to take it in a pill form. it's much more comfortable than jabbing yourself with a needle. >> they are hoping to make it available soon. randall pinkston, wjz eyewitness news. gelenia might not be the only pill on the market for long. the fda is expected to make a recommendation on another oral medication for m.s. as early as december. also, a new study shows playing video games improves vision for adults with lazy eye. researchers found better perception. until now, there were few treatments with adults for lazy eye. bigger adult entertainment at the hippo drom theater. andrea fujii tells us what is new. the blue man group is just one of the many acts, coming to the hippodrome this fall. but that's not all.

at least 13 people dead, dozens more missing after a powerful typhoon slams into that nation. china's national weather center says typhoon is the strongest storm it hit the nation this

year. strong winds and torrential rains are expected to continue to batter china for another few days. at least 350 homes have been damaged. a new book by journalist bob woodward reveals deep divisions in the obama administration about the war in afghanistan. in the book "obama's wars," the president's top aides were deeply divided over what to do. it also reveals afghan president hamid karzai was diagnosed with manic depression and was prescribed medication. the fire in harriman was 50% contained. and some are being allowed back in their homes. at least flee homes were destroyed. no one was injured. could the titanic tragedy have been avoided? that's the premise of a blockbuster book.
