eyewitness news. things are dry in our area. in fact, we're close to breaking a record high temperature, or at least trying it. with all of the rain in the midwest, we could sure use it. out to the west, that front that gave those folks all of that rain has pretty much dried up. almost nothing along that front now. it all moved into portions of canada. a little rain there. but for us, temperatures this afternoon, at 95 degrees. and that ties the all-time record. there you go. on this date set back in 1970. so far, the low today. 70, our normal high is 76 degrees. and i guess the good news is, today may be our last 90-degree day. we've got much cooler weather headed our way for the weekend. mary? >> is that good news or bad news, bob? i'm not sure. all right. moving on at this hour, a

frightening school bus accident in harford county today is under investigation. denise has more. >> the accident involves a school bus, suv and a car. sky eye chopper 13 was over the scene. you can see, the impact of the collision was violent enough to push the bus onto its side. the driver was suv was taken to shock trauma. six students on the bus and the bus driver have minor injuries. the driver of the third vehicle was also injured. mary? >> all right, denise. thank you. route 155 is now reopened. five months after her tragic death, baltimore county native, yeardley love is on the minds of thousands in virginia today. the day of dialogue features a series of discussions in a resource fair. the 22-year-old was found dead in her off-campus apartment. her ex-boyfriend, george

huguely, also from maryland, is charged with her death. a young woman from maryland, who nearly died in a bombing in uganda continues. emily ker stetter is at johns hopkins hospital, where she's had nearly a dozen surgeries. her friends are holding a fundraiser tonight. the charity concert at our lady of perpetual health, starts at 6:30. 18 rock bands will perform. all monies raised will go directly to kerstetter. it is back to court for lindsay lohan. a judge refused bail after she refused drug-mandated drug testing. >> reporter: she entered in the essential hollywood starlet style, short skirt and high heels, dark sunglasses. lindsay lohan did not speak or cry during a brief court appearance. then she was led away in handcuffs to begin processing for her new look, one she's

worn before, jailhouse orange. >> she's going to go through the same physical and mental evaluation. she'll be housed as what we call a keep-away, because of the celebrity status that she has. lohan is back behind bars, after she violated probation on her 2007dui and drug arrest. she will remain there until a probation revocation hearing on october 22nd. >> legal analysts believe the judge was sending lohan a message. wake up. that's why he didn't allow bail. >> no bail means she won't be released early like last time because of jail overcrowding. while she had admitted her mistake on twitter, it appeared the immediate go-to-jail ruling surprised everyone. >> i don't think anybody there was suspecting that the judge

would remand her. >> her mom dina was in court. as was her father michael. >> she hasn't gotten the right help yet. she doesn't know better. >> reporter: what seems obvious, it will be difficult for lohan to keep working while her legal drama continues. her role in a movie on the life of linda lovelace will likely have to be put on hold. >> lohan has been sent to jail three times for the 2007 drug and drunk driving case. twice she was released early because of overcrowding. a baltimore county woman is killed in a single-car accident in the parking lot of whitemarsh mall. baltimore county police say 22- year-old lauren nicole turner was caught shoplifting. employees took her name and let her go. she was then seen driving her vw beetle erratically. turner was ejected from the car and pronounced dead at the

police believe an explosive device was strapped to the employee. the robbers never even entered the bank. the suspects got away. and the teller is okay. well, a new bill would require pipeline operators to report gas leaks and oil spills within one hour of an accident. emergency officials have been under pressure since a natural gas explosion killed seven people and destroyed dozens of homes in california this month. the house is expected to vote on the bill later today. back here, getting children to drop the video games and focus on books. well, that's the goal of the ben carson reading project. andrea fujii explains in today's school watch report. the 50th carson reading room opened today in baltimore county. celebration for the ben carson reading room. >> i think it's really cool. >> 665 brand new books in a

child at a time. andrea fujii, wjz eyewitness news. >> the ben carson reading project hopes to get a reading room in every school in the country. it has been a great end to the week on wall street. stocks shot up after the opening bell and just kept going. the dow is up 198 points. s&p up 28 points. nasdaq up 54. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. >> the september rally rolled on, after a new report showed businesses appear to be spending again. firms invested more on computers, communications equipment, and machinery last month. the report suggests manufacturing is still a bright spot in a weak recovery. sales of new homes were flat in august, matching the second lowest level on record. builders are competing with millions of foreclosures. and they're unlikely to increase construction until those are cleared away, and demand for new homes picks up.

gold prices climbed yet again, briefly touching $1300 an outrageous. target is hoping the ipad will bring in holiday shoppers. beginning next month, they will sell six models of ipad. target will become the largest retail chain to sell the device. looking for a little wall street nostalgia. this month, sotherby's in new york and art will sell from lehman brothers. the sale is expected to net about $10 million, which will be used to pay off lehman's creditors. for more, go to cbs money watch.com. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. a british government fund received an inquiry from an unexpected source. queen elizabeth. the queen was interested in a fund that is intended to provide subsidized heating to low-income families.

really cool spot. because the temperatures have spiked the last few hours. we're now tied for the record high this date. 95 degrees. the only good news is the dew point has dropped way down to only 59 degrees, which means the humidity is a lot less than it was yesterday. believe it or not, 95 with a dew point of 59, actually feels like 94. so we're doing good. that number. 37% humidity. winds south/southwest at 10. nice breeze, too. barometer holding steady. dc up to 97 degrees. i think that's a new record for them. 81 in oakland. 95 in hagerstown. 97 in pax river. 84 at ocean city. a bit of a breeze off the water. just a little bit there. but once again, the dew point has come down. it is not as terrible as it certainly could be in the middle of summer. and the dew point could be in the mid-60s. and it would feel like about

100 to 104 degrees. records are 95 and 39. and the average, the average high today is only 76. and the average low now down to 53 degrees. southwest winds. that's keeping us in the heat at least for a few more, maybe 18 to 20 hours. by noon tomorrow, the winds go back up. to the west and northwest. and a cool front will across the region. there you see it. this afternoon and morning. it had pretty good showers with it. all of the rain in minnesota. flooding up there has now pretty much gone. the front has very, very little activity with it right now. just the southwest breeze with all of the heat. the front had some good showers last night. but as it moved into the ohio valley this afternoon, it's -- i mean, barely showing up. a few isolated showers. i don't think we'll see anything east of the mountains tomorrow. we will see the winds shift. humidity will come down. it's going to get a lot cooler by sunday. once the front comes through, it's going to kind of stall out across the south.

95 degrees, with sunny skies. hello. thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. he is best known for mocking politicians. today, he had to face them in congress. steven colbert was the attraction when a house subcommittee was working on a subcommittee for illegal workers on a farm. >> the hearing room was packed. it was clear something big was up. >> i haven't seen this many chairs since i don't know when, mrs. chairman. >> maybe it was impeachment. >> reporter: congresswoman loftgren asked me to share my vast experience, spending one day as a migrant farm worker. >> reporter: television comedian steve colbert spent time in front of the house panel. he had spent a day working on an upstate new york farm for his show. >> please don't make me do this

her abductor fathered her two children. the accused kidnapper of jaycee dugard appears in court. to the dismay of defense attorneys, a grand jury hands out an indictment against phillip and nancy garrido in the kidnapping of jait jaycee dugard. this means a preliminary hearing won't be necessary. that in turn means jaycee and her two daughters may not have to testify in open court next month. grand jury charges supersede the 29 counts of kidnapping and false imprisonment charges. attorneys say the couple is upet is -- upset that jaycee has not brought her daughters to jail to visit them. >> the city settled a lawsuit of $20 million that garrido, a sex offender, was poorly supervised. clinical trials are under way for an experimental treatment.

randall pinkston reports on the minimally invasive treatment. >> reporter: 62-year-old steven brooks has battled prostate cancer twice. the first time, he was treated with radiation. but when it reoccurred -- recurred, brooks got into a clinical trial. >> 0.1 cancer free. >> brooks lowered the psa. credits it to high food treatment. which stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound. >> it's more accurate, delivering high energy to the affected area, without hurting the surrounding areas. >> it has fewer side effects. like surgery and radiation. >> what about incontinence. >> no. never had incontinence. >> reporter: the clinical trials for for patients whose prostate cancer has come back.

bob ehrlich pretends to be for the working guy... but he's not on our side. i thought i knew bob ehrlich, but then i found out... he raised property taxes on every maryland family... and business. he increased college tuition... by 40%. 40%. and i thought i knew bob ehrlich. he was against raising the minimum wage. made $2.5 million... working for a lobbying firm. $2.5 million? he's not really on my side. with this tough economy, we really need a governor on our side.

warm day involved, bob. but hasn't felt that bad. >> the humidity actually dropped a lot today. but the temperatures went up. 5 degrees warmer. 6 degrees warmer than it was yesterday. got to 89 yesterday. yesterday afternoon, the dew point was 66. right now, it's 95, but the dew point is down to only 59, which means humidity is down. although it's hotter than yesterday. it is actually quite a bit dryer. south/southwest winds at 10. the barometer, 29.95 inches. 92 elkton. upper 90s to our south. 81 in oakland. and 93 and 95. yes, unusually hot for this time of year. that's why 95 degrees ties the record. and that was set back in 1970. the average high today, if you can keep this in mind, is only 76 degrees. beautiful. the average low is 53 degrees.
