severe weather, m.d. braces for a tropical system. high winds are next and it's already raining. >> hi, i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. there the tropical system is slowly arriving and in hours, we'll see the heavy rains and high winds. nicole dropped several inches of rain in florida flooding roads. bernadette woods and bob turk are tracking nicole. >> take a look at the radar we're tracking the rain all the way to cuba. you can see i the rain from the south all the way down to the cuba and florida straights. that will continue to effect the east coast and throughout the entire day tomorrow. because of the amounts of rain we're expecting, we'll have watches that will go into effect tomorrow.

a flash flood watch for the area and in the southern portions of the bay, a high wind watch as well. it will be a nasty day. bernadette woods has more on the storm and how much rain we'll get. well, this is the latest on nicole, the tropical storm became a tropical storm at 11:00. it's moving to the north, north east at 10:00 miles per hour. and it's skirting over the atlantic. you notice, it stops at this point. it's important, because, it doesnt' mean it won't effect us, it will just get extra tropical. the rain is still moving our way whether you see that spot or not. the flooding rains are a possibility and the winds will pick up as the center gets closer to the day tomorrow. in the region in here, over the appalachian to the bay, we'll see the heaviest of the rain. and there's the potential for a

few inches and in some cases, up to 6 inches of rain and there's a lot moving our way and we'll have the forecast coming up shortly. >> the first warning weather coverage continues shortly. wjz is live in anne arundel and derek valcourt has more on how maryland's preparing for the floods and high winds. >> reporter: local and state emergency management officials are sending out warnings. they're getting ready for the storm and so should you. >> reporter: in neighbors like fells point, subject to frequent flooding. >> every time there's a high tide, it floods there. >> a couple buddies got their cars destroyed because of the rain. i try to stay away if it's going to rain. >> reporter: you keep a close eye on it? >> yes, yes, you have to. >> and there's fast flooding in baltimore streets.

and there are more than 50,000 drains in baltimore, the city needs the public's health. >> and you have it in front of the house and it's near the house. the biggest weapon you have against the fight against flooding is a bloom. go out there and sweep the material out and put it in the trash can. >> crews in anne arundel county are trying to prevent problems before the storm and asking marylanders to be prepared. there's flooding and there are torrential rains of 6 to 8 inches or more. have a flashlight and a radio and nonperishable foods. >> and emergency workers are using this as a opportunity to remind people, if you come across standing water in the road over the next day or so. turn around, don't go through it. we're live in anne arundel county. all right, derek, thank you.

polled say they'll vote for o'malley. and jimmy carter will spend a second night in an ohio hospital. the doctors wanted to observe the former president following an overnight stay. a hospital spokesperson says he's in good spirits. he's 85 years old. and mr. carter became ill on an airplane promoting his book. there's been another emergency landing of a commuter night and joel brown has more. this is similar to another incident that happened last weekend. passengers heading to milwaukee heard an ominous sound as they prepared to land. >> you could hear them put the landing gear down. the announcement no traveler wanted to hear. >> they came over a loud speaker and they couldn't get a

gear down and we had one gear up. >> they braced for impact and they landed the plane safely. the faa and the ntsb are investigating. the incident was similar to another emergency involving a plane made by the same company just last saturday. >> heads down, stay down! >> that emergency landing, the right wheels of the connection flight were stuck in the up position. >> brace for impact. the planes ring dragged along the runway and sending showers of sparks in the sky. all 64 made it off safely. >> both were from the cr-j series made by a canadian manufacturer and they're not the only incidents. according to the documents they've been involved in six other landing gear merge sis in the last five years.

the rain is racing way out ahead of the storm. it's over south florida and down towards the keys. we're already seeing the rain connected with it. the first warning doppler radar, the rain moved in this afternoon. we're seeing the bands of rain out bind it, too. they're making their way up towards annapolis. and that's the heavy rain. this is the beginning of what we'll see. and we'll show you the sunshine out there we had out there earlier and the rain quickly followed and that's what we're dealing with now. the rain will continue on and off into the day tomorrow. we have the flash flood watches in effect for the entire region. and it was a big story earlier. turn around and don't drown. don't mess around with roads

covered in water. it is not worth your time for it. it may take you longer to get home, but it's worth it. they'll pick up into the day tomorrow. the wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour in the storm. we've been in the 60s all day and maybe get into the 70s tomorrow. here's nicole. it's down to the south, still. it ends over the water. that's because the national hurricane center thinks it will be extra topical. it loses the characteristics, but it won't stop. it's already moving in. it's the jet stream and the storm track, it's funneling all our way. we'll get rounds of rain moving up to a couple of inches. and that's connected with the tropics and the jet stream. it will continue to come our way. and the computer models take it into a few different directions.

as we said, regardless of if it has a name, it's moving in our direction. here's the indication of the rain, it comes in and sticks around and the winds pick up tomorrow. . and quickly, it will get out for friday. at this point, the winds will be gusty, maybe up to 30 miles per hour and bringing in dry air and cooler air. and over the weekend, the coolest air mass so far this evening is coming our way. we'll be into the 30s for the low. there's a lot going on now. senators the waters on the bay, the big concern is -- we'll look at the high tide at 11:47 p.m. there's a chance for a push of water with this as we head into the day and as the winds turn around behind the storm, they'll push back down. there and rounds of heavy rain and leaving a thunderstorm or two and the winds will pick up and the thunderstorms get out of here and it will be chilly

the rain is moving up the east coast and copious amounts of rain for us. because the rain amounts we're expecting, we'll have watches in effect all day tomorrow and coastal flood watches and in addition, a high wind watch for the reach your for the -- region for the day tomorrow. we'll have the information on the massive storm. >> well, here's the latest on nicole. it's down to the south and making its way over south florida and it stops. and it's going to interact with a big jet stream and rip the center of the storm apart. but, it doesn't mean we'll be finished to the storm when we get to the point. the rain will continue to funnel in our direction because of the track and we'll get around the heavy rain. and winds will pick up and it won't be the winds around here. it may be around 30 miles per hour. as far as the rain to the south

of us. over ten inches of rain is possible. here's the heaviest ban right here. and generally speaking, there's a possibility of getting up to 6 inches worth of rain out of this system here before it gets out of here. the thing is, it's already in place and we're starting with the storm and we'll have more later. >> back to you guys. and thank you, we'll invite you to stay with wjz-13 for the instant forecast and the look at the radar on wjz.com. we have breaking news from montgomery county. a school bus crash, kai has more. >> reporter: that's right, it happened on i-270, democracy boulevard. we're going to show you this. it's a school bus off of the sky ramp and one person may be pinned and there are several injuries. this is a heavily traveled area and it's around rush hour.

it's creating heavy traffic and this is a serious accident. rescue crews are there and we understand there are at least 15 injuries and one person is pinned. as we get more information, we'll bring it to you. >> the thank you, kai, from the news room. >> and the time square bomber planned on striking again. for the man that admitted to trying to bomb time square boasted it would kill about ho people. the government incolluded details on the court ruling and that's sentenced next week. he faces life in prison. security officials have intercepted a terrorist plot in britain, france and germany.

now with sharon gibala with more on a serious bus accident. hi, we're continuing to follow the incident. we have a live picture of the seen. it's on 270 at democracy, it's south of the split on to 270. it's involving a bus and you can see, it's off of the road. we're hearing about 15 injuries at this point. the traffic is effective and this is well traveled area. if you head south into montgomery county, this is going to be there for a while. we have plenty of other problems including an accident on lock raven on the left shoulder. another on the westside at 70. watch for an accident on hospital drive and there's a crash there and u.s. 1 and one in ellicott city and long gait parkway and thereto in the city there and wilkens a blue dale. and 95 northbound, that's going to be slow.

we want to update the breaks news from montgomery county. a bus crashes off of the ramp. >> that's righting they're still getting the information in. a bus went off on the sky ramp to north 70 on old georgetown road. 270 is a major artery that connects the beltway. one has died and we have learned. two are critically injured and there could be more. a massive triage unit was set

up outside of the bus accident. we understand it's a vehicle, we don't know initially, it is a commercial vehicle. there and we know there are people trapped on board and the fire rescue crews are racing in and trying to get the people out of the bus. the bus collided with several other cars and traffic is totally shutdown in the area. it's a busy area during rush hour and this is going to complicate the situation. we'll have more at 5:00 and 6:00. thank you, kai. and two students are facing criminal charges after they beat up a boy who joined a cheerleading squad. this 11-year-old wants to be a cheerleader in college and when he he joined the team, he started getting harassed. two boys attacked him and he suffered a broken shoulder. he plans on getting back to

what he loves. a birthday party for a 3- year-old ended in a brawl. a group of 150 people were gathered to celebrate and the child's father was asked to leave. five were hurt by flying beer bottles and they're facing charges in connection with the fight. there's a search on an american hot air balloon crew. >> denise, the two pilots participated in a race in europe to see who could fly the furthest on the limited amount of gas. they went missing off of the coast of italy and the conditions were rough. for the balloon was having radio issues throughout the flight. several are searching the area for the missing americans. thank you, and a person's

looking outside, we have a few drizzles on television hill >> well, really, this is like an ice burg, the tip of the ice burg is into maryland and sections of the region. south of this, that's the whole ice burg. look at the radar, there's a ton of rain moving in and it goes way down, all the way down the coast of florida and there's miami. they're seeing up to 3 inches of rain and it's moving up the east coast and just a minute ago, the weather service dissipated nicole and now, it's an elongated moisture. and take a look at the temperatures. it's calm out now. its way up there, 67 degrees an dew points at 56 barometer and beginning to fall.

and 71 up at elkton and 54 in oakland and 71 in ocean city. we'll get the arm what, tropical air in tomorrow. it will be more like a florida afternoon. and the humidity will be around 95%. during the day tomorrow, the moisture is moving up from the south. there's a good bit of rain on the eastern shore and steady, light rain now and it will get worse. overnight and into tomorrow, periods of heavy rain anywhere from two to four or five to six inches of rain. because of that, the entire regions in the acception of western maryland are under a flash flood watch and also, a coastal flood watch for the region. the winds from the south will push the water on the western side of the bay and there's flooding. en and on the southern bay, even though it's not windy now, the southern bay will see wind gusts over 40 miles per hour.

and that's why they have a high wind watch for those folks. there shall the low pressure is coming from the south and brings all of the moisture with it. that's until late thursday and a cool front will come through and dry us out. friday, a lot cooler and a lot of sunshine heading our way. the storm factors taking a big dip and that's picking up the moisture and moving up towards eastern canada over in next 12 to 24 hours. there's a small craft advisory in the bay and bay temperature around 75. there's a wind moving in and breezy and 65 is the low. tomorrow, rain, heavy and maybe a thunderstorm and gusty winds and maybe up to 25 to 35 miles per hour winds. we're talking about power outages and that's if we get the heavy rains. we'll have a narrow band and it's 75 miles wide where we hit the rainfalls.
