are clogged up. what we do know at this point a charter bus going north on the 270 spur off of the beltway went off the sky ramp fell onto 70. we know one person has died. four people were trapped inside and had to be extricated by montgomery county fire department. two of those people now have life-threatening injuries and have been transported to area hospitals. firefighters and rescuers are using ladders. the maryland state police tell us adults and children were onboard, and we believe there are 12 patients. it's unclear if the bus landed on other cars when it fell or -- they do know the ntsb is head together scene to

investigate the cause of this crash. denise? >> wjz has complete coverage of the bus accident. captain mike perry, you have a good view. tell us what you know. >> reporter: we see at least a dozen pieces of fire apparatus still on the scene. you see that in the foreground. they will be using that to lift that bus over the jersey barrier and back onto the highway once they clear the scene. at this point if the ntsb is involved, i have not heard that they're on the scene and we have not seen them at the moment. the maryland state police still being the lead investigator. because this is a tour bus possibly from another state, there is a strong possibility the ntsb could be involved because it's commercial

transportation. just the gridlock roads is the main thing. the scene is status quo. there are a dozen pieces of fire apparatus on the scene. >> we have more with sharon with how the accident is affect the road. >> it's causing gridlock in d.c. and the montgomery county area. it will be causing problems for hours. even once they get this cleared up it will take time for traffic to filter. the accident is on 270 on the spur to i-270 merge in the northbound direction of the merge and the northbound spur is closed to all traffic. all traffic still must exit at dem cra sift the 270 spur is shut down at the 495 split. all traffic must take the now now. as far as delays, the inner

through earlier. take a look at radar down to richmond. that's where we're seeing moderate to heavy rain. that's moving in our general direction. let me take you way down to our south. look at all the rain. it's a ton of rain across the carolinas, even thunderstorms embedded from norfolk to raleigh. it goes all the way down to the florida keys. all this rain continues to keep moving in our general direction. that means heavy rain is expected later tonight and during the day tomorrow. because of that, they've already issued flash flood watches and for the southern bay and coastal areas a high wind watch with winds as high as 40, maybe 45 miles an hour. meteorologist bernadette woods as more on this massive system and how much rain we're going to get. bernadette? >> it has lost its name. the hurricane center has decided it doesn't have the tropical character rest ticks.

the storm is still there and already affecting us and will continue through tomorrow. all of the rain getting funneled in our direction. it will be round after round of heavy rain. also some wind gusts interior areas up to 30 miles an hour. as far as rain goes, this is our biggest concern. we're thinking in this swath right in here is where the heaviest is going to fall. the thing is we could see localized amounts up to six inches. a couple inches of rain is possible. we'll have a lot or coming up. >> thank you. we continue with derek valcourt. he has more on the local preparations. derek? >> reporter: emergency management officials all over the state will be keeping a very close eye on rising water levels over the next day or so then they say they are

preparing for this storm. they say so should you. in neighborhoods like this, frequent flooding and residents know it can get tricky quickly. >> a couple of my buddies basically got their cars completely destroyed because of the rain. i try to stay away from here if i know it's going to rain. >> so you keep a close eye on it. >> you have to. >> clogged and overgrown drains can cause flooding. with more than 50,000 drains, the city needs the public's help. >> if you have an inlet in front of your house, the biggest weapon you have is really a broom. just go out there. sweep that material up and put it in the trash can. >> reporter: concerns are high. crews in anne arundel also trying to prevent problems and asking marylanders everywhere

the bed bug invasion continues. weijia jiang explains the push to protect your house. >> reporter: the bad news here is health authorities say you can't really prevent bed bugs because they will crawl into even the cleanest house. they say the key is to find them and get rid of them because they reproduce very quickly. many people who live in baltimore are feeling -- >> itchy, crawling, nervous. >> i feel like something's on me. >> reporter: health leaders announced bed bugs are infesting every area of the city. >> we don't know why we're seeing an uptick but we do know they my great. >> reporter: authorities held the first of several forums. adult crawlers are the size of an apple seed and leaves bite marks. they hide in mattresses,

curtains, collecting -- clothing and pillow. they get around easily. all they need is a space as wide as a credit card. >> they're nocturnal and secretive. they're not going to be hanging out on your coffee table in the middle of the kay -- day. >> reporter: without an exterminator you can rid them with steam washing and drying on high heat but the challenge is finding them. a female lays 500 new ones, 32,000 in six months. it has reached epidemic proportions in some parts of the country. >> i hope not. >> we don't have any in this house,. >> no, no, no. >> reporter: these neighbors live in butcher hill, the hardest hit area so far. they haven't spotted the bugs yet but researchers say no bugs are immune and they're scratching the surface.

>> reporter: maryland is benefiting. in january the automaker said electric motors will be produce duesed in whitemarsh. gm will invest $23 1/2 more to manufacture a new electric component. that adds 11 new jobs. >> it's a big financial investment and this is the beginning. this is the downpayment. this is about not jobs today but jobs tomorrow. >> so we got to work every single day to save jobs, create jobs and improve conditions that allow us to make the transformation. >> reporter: earlier this year it was announced that this part would be made at gm transmission. today they are making -- they say they're making another component but they wouldn't say what it is because it's a trade secret. gm said this has a good

relationship with the union and the plant remains competitive. a worker who survived two gm plant shutdowns -- >> if we stop the line, we fix this immediately. the people have more hands on, control of the product. >> reporter: when gm's new equinox starts production, maryland hopes it can get in on that action, too. >> and the first electric motors are expected to be produced in whitemarsh by 2013. >> and they only go up to 70. >> i don't need this go faster than 70. who does. >> a lot of rain on the way. right now it's pretty quiet. not rainy at all. 66. no wind. the barometer holding steady. come back and stake a -- take a look at that rain moving our way. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

let's take a look at radar, a little rain earlier. norfolk area, eastern carolinas.

that's moving from south to north as you can see it. it's keeping us dry but this moisture is destined to come up. it goes all the way down to the florida coast. it's a matter of time before we start getting the rain filling in. all the tropical moisture overrung the cooler surface, and it's causing the rain to break out and some of it has been heavy with heavy thunderstorm activity. right now we're stuck in the 60s, which is okay. tomorrow we get back in the 70s. tomorrow it will be tropical in the low 70s. out to the west not too bad, chilly. 70 at ocean city. that warmer air will start moving in, just a surge of tropical moisture. winds are light and particularly tomorrow and particularly in the southern areas of the bay where we can see wind gusts along 40 miles

an hour. tomorrow flash flood watches and coastal flood watches, alberts, st. maries and along the beaches. that's where you'll see the highest winds. the low pressure that was nicole has become an area of low pressure. there's no nicole per say. also, we have an area of low pressure developing. that will change over and pull that moisture new our direction during the night and tomorrow. we have to look down to florida. all that moisture from south to north. it's just like an invasion. temporarily a break. this is all moving in our general direction. clouding up, there will be rain in new york, boston. so a very wet scenario for the entire east coast beginning

feet onto interstate 270. kelly? >> reporter: this happened near the mall. it went off of the skyramp and fell 45 feet, landing on top of 270 below it next to a jersey wall. it's unclear if any other car was hit when the large bus fell. what we do know now is that one person has been killed and that montgomery county firefighter had to pull out of the rubble four people who were trapped inside. two of those four on the bus do have life-threatening injuries and have been transported to the hospital. fire crews have been using ladders to get inside and reach people and help rest cow them out. this appears to be a tour bus from a company that's based in pennsylvania.

the maryland state police tell us adults and children were onboard. it's unclear how many people were onboard but the number we can confirm is there's a total of 12 patients who have been treated here. we do know the national transportation safety board is heading to the slain to decide if it -- scene to decide if they will investigate. it's very congested. we're on 270 north now. it's a crowd moving at five, 10 miles an hour. denise, back to you. >> thank you. our complete coverage of the bus crash continues with captain mike perry. he's above the scene. mike? >> reporter: you can see a k9 dog from the montgomery county police department has been searching the hillside. they still want to make sure that no one was ejected from this bus as it rolled down the hill. montgomery county firefighters still remaining on the scene.

conditions. the coastal town has been pumping water from storm drains since monday. outside right now there's light rain falling in parts of the state. it's expected to get heavier over the next several hours. meteorologist bernadette woods and bob turk are closely tracking the system and how it will affect us. >> take a look at radar. we had a little rain early on and some heavier showers to the south, quiet across much of maryland. look down to the south. all of the rain across the virginias and carolinas is all moving up the 95 corridor. so probably after 9:00 or 10:00 we'll see moderate rain. after midnight heavy rain. we can also expect to see heavy rain. because of the rain coming our direction we have advisories that will go into e fact late -- effect late, late tonight.

we have flash flood watches out and from the western shore from aa county to st. mary's. we have a high wind watch, but it may get wind gusts over 40 miles an hour. bernadette joins me now with a look at this massive storm. as of 5:00 this is downgraded to a nontropical. it's still moving our way. ignore the fact that it's this but don't ignore the fact that the rain continues to follow in our direction. we just started dealing with it today. the heavier arounds are expected tonight and tomorrow. wind gusts, interior areas possibly up to 30 miles an hour. thises is the zone with the heaviest rain we expect all up and down the coastline. yes. it is possible that some areas could get up to six inches of rain. a couple inches of rain are possible. that's why flooding is a

not be an isolated incident. planes from the same manufacturer have had six emergencies. last saturday a delta plane had a problem. all 64 people mon board made it off safely. both planes were from the series, small jets. investigators will take that into account. >> regional jets are used for short haul transport. so they may take off and land multiple times a day, which puts increased stress on their landing gear. >> reporter: in a statement bombard deair said they have logged more than 22 million

takeoffs and landing cycles and said quote they are very good and reliable. in washington, joel brown reporting. >> there have been no injuries in the landing gear emergencies over the last five years. two police officers are wounded and one man is dead after a shooting at another u.s. hospital. >> the shooting happened in omaha. the first call came in about 9:20 this morning and the hospital was placed on lockdown. the gunman opened fire near the cafeteria. two officers shot the suspect who died from the injuries. back to you. >> investigators are looking into whether the gunman was involved in another incident with police just hours before this shooting. in our nation' capital police have arrested a man in connection with a shooting at a busy intersefntle two people
