may have had those stents implanted unnecessarily. that has led to one of the largest malpractice suits in maryland history. >> lawyer j. miller stands next to the massive pile. 100 lawsuits he filed on behalf of 100 parents at the medical center. accusing mark meday of negligence and fraud. he believes his clients all had unnecessary stents put in place to clear the blocked arteries. >> these patients are willing to be very reasonable. it's just not simply a battle over money. i can't get them to even consider paying what's reasonable. >> he said he filed after settlement negotiations to settle down. >> they are not willing to share responsibility. and they're not willing to take care of the patients they said they would take care of. >> the hospital strongly denies that.

saying they want patients to know the door remains open to productive, reasonable and serious discussions with their attorneys. >> dr. medee's attorney said his client had done nothing wrong. >> he says dr. medee's story came after this came about. the hospital told wjz in those cases where sjmc has appropriate medical information, it will continue to seek a fair and satisfactory resolution with its patients. but declined to comment on this. >> it may take 101 different jury trials. but if that's what it takes to get each of these patients justice, then that's what we're willing to do. >> there have been a handful of other lawsuits filed in the past year. and several lawyers are trying to get class action status for their clients. lawyer miller, who you saw in that piece, objects the overuse of stents is a nationwide problem. and he calls this just the tip

deliberations. and so far, no verdict. and today, the jury asked the judge if they could examine the actual bullet that killed ken harris. defendants face a long list of criminal charges in connection with the september of 2008 murderer. baltimore city councilman ken harris. on that night, harris physicalled -- visited the haven lounge. but he walked in on a robbery. tried to get away and was shot in the back. prosecutors told jurors the dna on key evidence like gloves and a halloween mask used during the robbery links the three defendants to the crime and they showed surveillance video that prosecutors argue puts it at the crime scene. today, the jurors asked to examine more evidence themselves. and asked to see testimony transcripts which are not yet available. defense attorneys believe a jury taking their time could be

life behind bars. he plotted to kill dozens with a bomb in new york's times square. now, a judge has ordered faisal shahzad to spend the rest of his life in prison. shahzad has no regrets about his actions. >> reporter: faisal shahzad smirked when he was handed down a sentence. he told the court he felt no remorse for his failed may 1st bombing attempt. he said, quote, i'm happy with the deal god has given me. he also told the court, we are proud terrorists, and we will keep on terrorizing you. >> we will range an attack inside america. >> shahzad became a u.s. citizen last year. he received explosives training at a pakistani terror camp and says the taliban gave him money to carry out a terror attack in times square. prosecutors made a case to demonstrate what would have

happened if shahzad's bomb had gone off. >> reporter: shahzad told investigators he hoped to kill 40 people here inside times square and was hoping for another attack two weeks later. >> reporter: the judge said shahzad's sentence should be a warning to anyone who hopes to follow in his footsteps. she told him he should spend time behind bars, thinking carefully about whether the koran really advocates killing people. >> shahzad was a former budget analysis and lived in connecticut. new insight in maryland's most talked-about race. the latest poll shows o'malley with a lead over ehrlich. the latest rasmussen poll shows o'malley with 8 points ahead. rasmussen has now classified the race from a tossup to leaning democratic.

europe on high alert. and tonight, there's a hunt for people behind a terror plot. intelligence agents believe the suspect behind the plan are british and german. american forces are taking aim in this northwest region in pakistan, hunting for those in europe. a suspected u.s. drone strike killed a group of militants monday. they believe german and british nationals are at the heart of the terror plan. but it's unclear if those killed in the terror strike are connected to the plot. in france, police are also cracking down on suspected islamic extremists. so far, investigators are not tying them directly to the

but the flights have fallen by more than a third in the past week. a crash on i-95, creating some traffic problems in howard county. let's check in on the roads now, with sharon gibala. she's live with wjz traffic control, watching that and others. >> the good news is, it's been a pretty quiet commute, with the exception of this crash. you can see we have an overturned vehicle. on 95 southbound. the accident is blocking two left lanes with emergency vehicles there. you can see the overturned vehicle is off the road. you're looking at a six-minute backup at this point, to route 100. with an average speed of 17 miles an hour. meanwhile, another crash. there's a look at drive times and the speeds on the beltway. still looking at delays on the inner loon.

see the long shadows? their sun goes down a little before 7:00. gets pretty dark by 7:00. let's take a look at temperatures around the region now. it is kind of a great night for football. 58 here. but check out oakland. they have been stuck at 39, 38, 40 all day long. the hot spot, if you call it that, 61 in washington. 59 in pax river and ocean city. and 52, it's been really chilly the last couple of days. our normal high is around the 70-degree mark. we're going to get back to that in just about two days. right now, west/northwest winds around the region. kept us on the cooler side. and the breeze maymade it a little chillier. here in the east. it came in. might remember last friday. low pressure up across portions of minnesota. came across the great lakes. and got stuck in our region. it keeps spinning around and around and around. and they brought this atlantic moisture in the region. it was over to the south by sunday night. and monday. that gave us the rain now, it's

they say violently stabbed the person to death inside his own home. a commotion wakes several people, including paulette johnson. >> they were rattling my walls. >> around the same time, police were called to the home of steven hobson. they believe he was stabbed to death but call the murder a mystery. they did not recover a weapon, nor did they have any leads. >> one reason detectives are having a hard time putting pieces together is because they say there are no visible signs of forced entry in hobson's apartment. a motive remains unclear how this occurred or why. she said she is moving. >> that make me move faster.

>> god hates america -- >> is it freedom of speech? or pure harassment? the u.s. supreme court will make a major decision in albert snider versus the westboro baptist church. seven members was kansas base church protested 300 feed away from the entrance of st. johns catholic church in westminster. the group targets marines who have been killed,; albert's son wasn't gay. but he was targeted. >> it's hard enough to bury a child. but to have this go on, too. it's like somebody kicking you in the face. >> snider sued the westboro baptist church for causing him extreme emotional distress. a baltimore jury awarded him millions. he thought the church would go

a funeral. >> 14 groups, including u.s. searntsz in 48 states in maryland are backing albert snider's cause arguments begin tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. in the morning. i will lead our coverage. toyota says it has fixed nearly 4 million vehicles in the united states as part of the company's massive safety recalls. the complaints have fallen considerably since april. toyota has been working to rebuild its reputation after recalling more than 10 million cars worldwide. the white house is going green. white house officials say there are plans to install solar panels atop the white house's living quarters. the pants will be installed pie spring of next year and will heat water for the first family as well as supplies for the electricity. it is not new to the white house. former president jimmy carter installed panels that were later removed by the reagan administration.

well, if you have had a computer that takes forever to start up, help is on the way. starting next year, most new pcs will come with an updated piece of software that could allow them to boot up almost instantly. it has been a long time coming to personal computers. the software being replaced has been in use for almost 25 years. each day, 4,000 smoked their first cigarette. that's according to the fda. in healthwatch report maryland has been more successful in getting people to quit. wayne boggs took his first puff of a cigarette at age 17. under the pressure of his friend. >> you have your friends give this. >> at 39, he wishes he could quit. turns out many marylanders are doing just that. in 1998, over 22% of

marylanders were smokers. a decade later, it has dropped to just above 15%. >> our rate of decrease in adult cigarette smoking has occurred at twice the rate of the national average. the number. smokers did go down every time the tax on cigarettes went up. especially when a dollar a pack was added in 2008. the ban on smoking in the workplace has discouraged smoking, too. and there's an increased social sig stigma. but it took the death of a friend with lung cancer to get chevelle morgan to quit. she first had lung cancer. then it spread to the brain. >> reporter: maryland offers a free hotline on how to quit. including a supply of patches and gum. >> the fda has given about $550,000 to enforce the law that says miners -- minors cannot be sold cigarettes. and retailers can expect to see young, undercover agents to come into stores in the next week. >> they are now training officers to carry out the

joe flacco is not the only raven gaining notice on the nfl. the guys on defense are getting their due. sports illustrated has listed lineman haloti nata as a candidate. the big man was a monster. 11 tackles, including a quarterback sack on the steelers first possession. he is 6'4," 340 pounds of force. haloti nata is playing as well as any on the defense. ask there's no denying it. i'm proud of him. he's a great guy. nobody works harder. he's a good family man. he's just the kind of guy you route -- root for. >> another is cornerback lardarius webb. the ravens are home on sunday to face the pass-happy denver broncos. you can see that gime here --

game here on wjz. coverage kicks off at 1:00. ravens will hit the road in new england. to face tom brady and the patriots. they destroyed the dolphins in the monday night game in miami. brady threw this to danny. but the brunt of the damage was done by the patriots' special team. patrick chung blocks this. tarries it all the way for the score. new england wins, 41-13 with three special teams touchdown. miami fired its special teams quarter. and for the 13th street year, the orioles are nonparticipants. few players on the roster have even experienced the post season before. not one of them is luke scott. he was in the play-offs with the houston astros. scott and the o's did have success this season. i asked about the existing potential to get baltimore in the play-off position someday.
