elderly man left stabbed to death lying in his home, how his wife found him and a plea from police. good evening, thanks for joining us everyone. elderly woman leaves her husband at home for some saturday errands. less than a half hour later she returns and finds him dead. we are live at city police headquarters. suzanne explains police need help from the public to find the killer. >> reporter: that's correct. palmer was enjoying his retirement after four decades after a bus driver. in the middle of the afternoon friday those golden years came to abrupt and violent end. when evelyn palmer came home just 20 minutes at the grocery, she called for her husband sterling, but no answer. >> she kept going back there whining. i turned the light on and there he was at the foot of the step. >> reporter: she found her husband on the basement floor of

their home. >> i tried to give him mouth to mouth resuscitation. he wasn't doing anything. the only thing i would say is please don't do this to me. then when i looked down i saw a lot of blood. >> reporter: police say sterling palmer had been stabbed. >> we're asking for the community's help. here we have a 78-year-old man, someone entered the house, stabbed him several times and as a result of his injuries he died. >> reporter: earlier in the day he did have money in his pants pocket. his wife knows that because he pulled it out to give her some to buy a sandwich. when he was discovered dead he didn't have any money in his pockets. relatives and friends are consoling the widow. >> my heart is broken because someone took him away from us. >> reporter: as the family gathers on saturday police arrest someone right next to the home, but it turns out it's not the suspect. >> there's nothing he wouldn't

do for me. i don't know how i will make it without him. >> reporter: now, police do not know if it was robbery. the family says his cash was missing, but he did have on a lot of gold jewelry. thank you. if you saw anything suspicious in the 2600 block of edison highway yesterday you're asked to call police. less than two hours ago a shooting victim is found steps away fromdowns hopkins university. police were called to home wood terrace. when they got there they found an adult male shot in the chest. there is no word on his condition tonight. two men are recovering from a stabbing at the maryland state fairgrounds tonight. it happened around 6:30 right after an october fest beer festival. police say both men were rushed to the hospital and both are expected to survive. a third man was arrested at the scene, but police have not said who he is or why he was

arrested. an annapolis high school student charged with sexually assaulting a classmate faced similar charges months earlier. that is prompting police to change policies. the school said it was not notified that troy reed was charged in the rape of a classmate back in june. then in late september reed was arrested on new charges of assaulting a second girl. police say they will change their policy and notify schools at each stage of criminal investigations. most people love dogs, but when it comes to pit bulls you can get some mixed reaction. today the controversial breed tried changing its image at an event called give pets a chance. some call pit bulls dangerous. unpredictable and unfriendly. half a dozen animal rescue groups are trying to change that image. >> we're trying to break the

website. fire sends one person to the hospital this weekend. firefighters rushed to the 200 block of south gilmore street before 7:00 this morning. they found flames in the two story home. one person inside was taken to bay view hospital with nonlife threatening injuries. arson investigators were also at that scene. in tonight's campaign 2010 report the race for governor is getting hotter. they have agreed to a third debate. the candidates will debate on the radio station wold october 21st and then again just agreed tonight on wtop on october the 22nd, but first they will go face to face right here on wjz, the only televised debate. our prepsz are well underway for monday's showdown. we have been reading questions and gearing up for the meeting. you can watch it this monday at 7:00 only right here on wjz 13. an advance traffic reporting system now reserved for state

highway workers is on the way for all drivers stuck in rush hour. tonight we explain you can start using it as soon as next fall. >> reporter: traffic tie ups can waste time for drivers in a rush. >> when accidents happen or road construction, that's when it gets to be an issue. >> reporter: by this time next year commuters will have another way to check on the morning drive or evening rush hour. this is it. by dialing 511 drivers can hear realtime traffic information at any time. or they can log onto the safe highway administration website to see the jam ups. >> this will be one stop shopping for travel. >> reporter: valerie is a spokeswoman, she said the state approved a nearly $5 million price tag for the 511 line and there's already another test system helping drivers in new york.

temperatures going up from there. thank you. a frightening morning for marylanders on board a mega bus to new york city. the bus collided with a flock of geese on the new jersey turnpike, sent the glass into the eyes of the drivers. the driver amazingly managed to bring the bus to a safe stop despite injuries and no passengers were hurt. inside a chile mine, a drill finally broke through the underground chamber and getting out of the mine however could take a little bit longer. >> reporter: rescue crews broke out champagne and family members celebrated after drillers broke through to the trapped miners. a half a mile down the 33 men watch says their path to freedom opened. they have been living in the cramped hot space for more than

verizon as early as sometime at the beginning of next year. right now it is only available through at&t. it could significantly boost sales. for 150 years dru id hill park has been the recreation center of baltimore city. this project is promising renewal. mike has the story. >> reporter: along with central park dru id hill is among the oldest public parks in the nation. built on land purchased with a penny tax on horse carriage rides it is 150 years old. planted today a tree for every year of its existence done by 200 volunteers. >> trees planted, basically the left side of the park right now.

the last say 12 hours or so. it is moving on through, it is really going to be of no consequences to us. it came through very dry. it will lift back into the area as a warm front and that's going to help facilitate showers heading into the beginning of the week. we will talk about that in a second. 57 degrees as the front pushed through, temperatures dropped quickly this afternoon. we did get up to 81. 51 the dew point, 80% relative humidity. barometer still high at 30.00. 57 in cumberland. everyone pretty much in the mid to upper 50 range. then 67 down toward dc. all of us falling right around that 60 degree range. overnight lows typically average right around 46 degrees. we're going down into that range tonight. it will be with a comfortable, light wind. still able to put windows up,

keep the ac off for now. we will be watching as this low pressure system in the west along with the front we just mentioned has drifted down just south of the region. that will pull back up. that disturbance in the west will ride across the country and we're going to start to see a combination of both of those by monday into tuesday. we will start to see clouds thicken by monday evening. pleasant conditions stay with us, as the front drapes over us we will see chances of showers into tuesday. no washout of plans. temperatures will take a bit of a hit going down to 60s by the end of the week. temperatures stay in the 70s until about wednesdays or so. sunrise tomorrow is at 7:11. south wind on the bay, no advisory. 66 degrees your bay temperature. tonight going to 47 degrees, clear, again with temperatures right around the average and then if you're going out tomorrow, 76 degrees. we want to mention if you're going to be out with the ravens
