coming up exclusively at 7:00. it has been another bloody and deadly weekend in baltimore. several people are dead, several more injured in a number of shootings. wjz is live, derek valcourt with more on this search for bloodshed. >> reporter: in the long term, police believe the decrease in murdered is working, but this weekend, it was marred with murders. sterling palmer stabbed to death in his own home. his wife discovered his body. >> the only thing i would say is please don't do this to me. and when i looked down, i saw a lot of blood. >> reporter: also killed daryll hood, shot in the head and left to die in an alley just block from the home he grew up in. >> i have no idea why somebody would do this to my son. >> reporter: police now believe another man was shot at that

same location. but that man was found in an alley. detectives working leads in those cases and three others, but the violent weekend led the police commissioner to evacuate what happened. >> kind of like setting sail, you're going to have to position the ship. >> reporter: so far murders are down. police say weekend violence is down 16% compared to 2009. >> the past six weekends have been relatively quiet. i'm not waving a flag. i'm not declaring victory but we do want to put this into perspective. >> reporter: but the perspective feels a little different to the family members of murder victims like daryll hood. >> you get on television and say that the crime rate is going down. i don't see how. >> reporter: so far no arrests in these weekened murders, but police say they are working

multiple leads. live at police headquarters, derek valcourt. >> police are asking for the public's help. anyone with information is urged to call crime stoppers. a family is desperate for answers tonight into what caused the car crash accident that killed their 18-year-old son. they say it's taken days just to get basic information from police. mike hellgren takes you inside the tragedy and situation. >> reporter: this is where andrew mccoy was thrown from his friend's suv. it somehow collided with a cadillac driven by an off duty annapolis police officer. you see the memorial here. andrew's family simply wants a fair investigation. mccoy's mother and stepfather met wjz at the saw mill skate mark. a home away from home for their 18-year-old son. they want to know what happened when he died a week ago at the

intersection of poteet. >> i was shaking because i was scared. i knew something bad had happened to him. >> it's a bureaucratic snafoo. >> reporter: for days they got little information from police. the mta took the case initially. the family did not know an off duty police officer was involved until four days after the crash when they read it online the morning of their son's funeral. >> we certainly realized that investigations of this type take time. we know it's going to take time for them to do everything. but just to not even have any basic details about the accident was very frustrating. >> reporter: baltimore city police are now taking the lead. >> one of the key things will be to get the blood from the hospital. >> reporter: that has to be subpoenaed and they have to physically get the results back from the lab. sawiers served 28 years in

baltimore city before retiring >> we are not making any allegations, but it makes you wonder. >> reporter: they are desperate to get andrews personal belongings back to help them grieve as they wait for closure. >> i want his wallet, i want his cell phone. he's always taking pictures. always taking videos with his cell phone. and i want to see what he saw. >> reporter: and you're looking live at the wreath that andrew's stepfather placed here at the intersection. this all could come down to who ran the traffic signal at this intersection. but that could take weeks, maybe months to determine. reporting live in south baltimore, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. all right thank you, mike. andrew's mother says her son's close friend who was driving the suv doesn't remember anything about the crash. an accident causes major headaches for commuters on interstate 70 tonight.

sky high chopper was at the scene. it happened in howard county. a vehicle rolled into the shoulder of the road. at least one person was rushed to the hospital. the back up was several miles long. the ravens are running wild all the way into first place in the division. sports director mark viviano is live now with more from the team and reaction from fans. >> reporter: the ravens have assumed the top perch atop the division. and why stop there with a 4-1 record they are tied for the best record in all the nfl. baltimore continues to be one of the best homes in the league. they never lost at home to denver, once again it wasn't even close. on a weekend of surprises and upsets, the ravens stayed on course and delivered a decisive win over the visiting denver broncos. nothing fancy, just straight ahead running. the ravens rolled to a 31-17

victory using four rushing touchdowns. the longest by mcgahee in the fourth quarter to put the game away. baltimore takes over first police in the afc north division tied for best record in the nfl. and they avoid any let down after the win a week ago at pittsburgh. >> our guys talked all week about following the big win with a win. that's really important. you know if you don't follow it up with a win it negates the big win. because it just counts for one a piece. that was the cause for the win. >> we have to work harder to progress and do some better things out there week to week. i think that's what we're really showing right now. >> with our wjz fan cam we asked you what you think about the ravens offense and what will it take to win at new england. >> flacco is back on his game. he did a great job. love ray lewis.

in the weather center with the updated forecast. >> hello to you. we did see temperatures go up to about 85 degrees. the average is 69. we went well above the norm. just as quickly as they rose. heir going to event tkhul -- they're going to eventually change. just a little bit of rain activity down toward la ray and virginia. because of that front that stalled in pennsylvania and up into new york, we have to keep a very slight chance of showers and potentially thundershowers in for our region because it's just so much activity around us. we are losing the heat of the day. and that's going to help kind of take some of this energy out of the atmosphere without that energy. you really don't have a lot of chance for thunderstorms. that's a good thing. we have the complete forecast coming up. vic and denise. >> we're going to put the energy back in the atmosphere at 7:00. you will see it. still to come.

a college party in washington state turns into a nightmare as dozens of students suddenly turn ill. police suspect drugs were slipped into their drinks. >> at this modest vacation home, the evidence of friday night's party still litters the lawn. >> it was crazy. there was loud music, more going on. >> reporter: more than more students knew, until the party took a fright turn they say after two or three drinks. >> all of a sudden all the girls were puking everywhere. >> they were falling down, the drinks were going everywhere. >> the girls were outside on their back. people were so drunk they didn't know what to do. >> one of those girls ended up at this near by grocery store unconscious. someone called 911. >> they found about 50 college

students, most of them drunk. many of the women incoherent. >> our immediate suspicion was that some sort of drug had been introduced into their systems. >> 11 women and one man ended up in the hospital. police say they were drugged by someone who may have spiked their drunks but they don't think the host of the party was involved. one student was found having sex with a nearly unconscious woman who turned out to be his girlfriend. >> we know that the majority of our victims were female. so the assumption is that these individuals were targeted for some reason. >> reporter: many of the women were drunking premade drunks out of red cups which seems to be the source of the drug. while the type of drug is still unknown, a type of drug called ruffies are deadly when combined with alcohol. >> girls were grabbing up. and we were like, you have to get up off the ground.

>> they were like zombies. they really couldn't function. and north bounds traffic is getting by in the center lane. bank it for thousands of dollars or throw it away. until today those were the only two options for women who gave birth in maryland when it came to their umbilical cord. as weijia jiang reports in tonight's health watch report. a third option in one hospital could save thousands of lives. >> you're doing your happy dance. >> reporter: when 21 -month-old mason shaffer was born, his family went through the agony of how long he would survive. >> he was in so much pain, his

eyes was going out. >> reporter: mason was diagnosed with a disease that was taking his life. with the donation of umbilical cords saved his life. on monday, mercy medical center announced maryland's first public cord banking program. all moms have the option of donating their umbilical cords instead of having to bank it privately. when it comes to private banking, it costs $2,000 to start so without the option of donating, they said many women were simply discarding their cord all together. >> the very people that need it the most have been prohibited because of cost from getting it. >> reporter: the cord blood has been used to treat more than 90 life threatening diseases including many type of cancers and disorders like sickle cell disease. mercy's program will help many

colors out there. i guess we're starting to get really in the mood now with the summertime temperature for summer type activities. but we're going to be getting a shift here really quickly. we'll be putting our sweaters on by the end of the week. the average high for this date is 69. so we were well above that. not quite near but almost in that range of the record of 89 degrees set back in 1954. we were actually closer to the record here than we were the average temperature and that's going to be shifting here over the next few days. we'll get closer and closer to those averages as temperatures start to drop. right now we're still enjoying temperatures closer to 80 degrees. 85 at reagan national, 68 in oakland. look at that change just over the mountains. 89 over in the cumberland valley. the winds are coming in from the southeast now off the water at just about 5 miles per hour. we're getting a bit of a

northwesterly flow in cumberland at 13. that could change heading into tomorrow. we got a good bit of cloud cover out there but the sun always managed to come through. that's what you saw courtesy of sky chopper 13. there are clouds around, they are adding to the dramatic effect. we still have a lot of sun out there. we'll see more and more cloud cover as we head into the overnight and tomorrow. we have a low pressure system helping to throw some moisture in our direction from the west. that's out about kansas city. but mostly we are looking at this front that's draped across the great lakes and right across the northern tier of pennsylvania and up into new york. it is all of the energy here that could possibly sink down into the region. high pressure in control helping to pull some of that cool air around. we're all into the zone where all of that air can clash and collide. we will see the potential for showers and thunderstorms.

it is just before 6:30. 78degrees and mainly clear. good evening thanks for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. dazed from daylight. the first of those trapped miners in chile could be brought to the surface as early as wednesday. all 33 could be free and reunited with loved ones by the middle of the week. >> reporter: chilean rescue workers say they finished installing the last of 15 giant steel tubed. they are designed to reenforce the top of the shaft used to bring up the 33 trapped miners. the next step, building a platform across the shaft.

this will help support the capsule when it's brought up. officials say they hope to start the actual rescue as early as thursday. the low ground, the men have been preparing for the big day with a special diet. it includes a high calorie chocolate drink to boost nutrition. they've also started taking aspirin to prevent blood clots. each of the men will have to endure a twisting 20 minute 2,000-foot ride to the surface in a rescue capsule. after more than two months, workers were finally able to breakthrough to the miners on saturday. >> it was just unbelievable. i mean the feelings and emotions that everyone was going through was just undescribable. >> reporter: family members say they are just waiting for the moment when they can see their loved ones. she said, i know i'm going to hug him, but i know at that moment i will not do anything, i will just cry and scream. >> reporter: and the miners

will be slammed with movie officers and book deals. but for now, everyone is just awaiting for a safe return as the men see sunlight for the first time in months. >> and it will take about an hour each time for the rescue capsule to make its way down and then back up. state police are working for a bank robbery suspect who tried to strike again over the weekend. take a good look at this surveillance picture of the suspect. on saturday morning, police say he tried to rob the bank in austin. but employees recognized him at the robber who hit the bank last month and locked him out. the suspect pointed the gun at employees before leaving. mary is live in the newsroom with the latest on the case against mayor nedal hasan.

referee: hasan faces 32 counts of attempted murder. he faces also an article 32 hearing in military court used to determine if there's enough evidence to proceed with the trial. survivors of the rampage is expected to testify about what they saw last november when hasan opened fire as soldiers were getting ready to deploy over seas. he was upset with facing another deployment and viewed the wars in afghanistan and iraq as wars against islam. hasan once lived in maryland and received his medical degree from bethesda. an american was gunned down near the mexican-the texas border while yes, jet skiing with his wife. don teeg explain, two of those gang members are now suspects.

>> reporter: falcon lake has been called a hornets nest of criminal activity. the powerful and fierce mexican gang that's not shy about letting its presence be known. >> it's happened before. we're out here patrolling and we've seen individuals coming up with machine guns. >> reporter: authorities have not released pictures of the two. but the two are wanted for several other crimes. including homicide, kidnapping and arson. >> i'm a little hopeful. i hope it's going to bring david home. hopefully they can tell us where he is. >> reporter: there had been doubts about tiffany heartily's account of what happened. that her husband had been shot and killed while the couple was jet skiing and taking pictures

of this shun sunken church. where was david's body, where was the jet ski. this is video shot from a police dash cam. it shows the couple being pulled over shortly before getting to the lake, jet skis in tow. >> where are you headed? >> up above. >> to falcon? >> yes. >> just to ski for the day. >> yeah, a little bit. >> it proves that they were together. that they were in rout to falcon lake to enjoy the day. >> reporter: even though mexican authorities now believe tiffany, david's father doesn't believe in mexican law enforcement. >> i think that, that lake will probably be david's head stone. >> reporter: mexican officials insist they will keep searching for david heartily's body. don teag, cbs news, dallas. now the texas department of public safety says the lake is notorius for mexican drug pirates and has warned people not to leave the safety of u.s. waters. three weeks until the midterm elections and the

battle for governor in new york reaches a boiling point. carl paladino is backtracking after his controversial comments about children being brainwashed about homo sexuality. his opponents seen here, democrat andrew como says that his comments are homophiobia. and republicans look to make a big gain when americans vote next week. president obama is taking a big role. >> reporter: democrats are fighting an uphill battle. president obama is criss crossing the country. trying to raise cash and interest in next month's election. the democratic party released a new ad claiming that the u.s. chamber of commerce is spending

foreign money to support republican candidates. the gop striking back with its own commercials, they are targeting democratic candidates in 21 states with nearly 30 new ads they released over the weekend. >> barren hill supported the stimulus package that created renewable jobs in china. >> reporter: republicans are counting on anger in washington to help them retake congress. john banner was in florida monday campaigning for a republican candidate for congress. just hours before the president arrived to rally democrats. president obama will do the same in maryland. joel brown, cbs news, washington. the president will travel to massachusetts and ohio.

british authorities are investigating whether an american was killed by her rescuers. >> reporter: u.s. soldiers may have killed british aid worker linda norgrove in their attempt to rescue her. taliban drivers ambushed norgrove car. the region is under u.s. control. so british commanders gave troops commanded the rescue mission. a u.s. special forces unit staged a raid to free her. >> linda could have died as a result of a grenade detonated by the task force during the assault. >> reporter: when british officials first announced norgrove was killed, they blamed a suicide bomb triggered

by one of the captors. >> reporter: the british prime minister says that petraeus brought him new information. a new investigation is under way. >> ultimately the invest of linda's death lies with those who took her captive. >> reporter: but now british officials wonder if american forces could have done more to assure her safety. norgrove was 26 years old. she was in afghanistan working on a u.s. funded project. officials say somehow the plane clipped a power line and clipped into a moving combine before hitting the ground. the combine driver said he

what we can expect. >> we expect temperatures to stay very close to normal. we are so far away today we won't duplicate this very many timings. tomorrow we'll be closer to today for one more day. we'll have a bit of cloud cover and showers on and off through the day. everyone thunderstorms in the afternoon. then we start to temperatures drop after the rain moves out of here. we go down to 68 which is a normal temperature for wednesday. then 69 on thursday with another chance of rain. temperatures start to drop one more day on friday but then we clear out. 63 on saturday with the return of the sun. an unusual punishment for a texas man convicted of stealing money from a crime victim. a judge ordered daniel morales carrying a sign admitting he is a thief. alex must hold the sign for five hours every weekend for the next six years. he stole $250 from the harris county crimes victim fund. ray rice and the ravens flying high. mark has the latest coming up next in sports. ,,,,,,,,,,,,

i guess we've gotten beyond jinxing it on how good they are. >> the ravens are faced constant questions about the development of young quarterback joe flacco. the team has answered but adding passing. nothing gets the job done like the run. the ravens got it rolling from the ground from start to finish. the ravens scored four touchdowns all of them on the ground putting a running lesson on denver. 41-17 the final. coach john harbaugh defends the issue that the team has to be a singular identity. >> i'm not sure why anybody won't say that your identity is

he played five seasons here in baltimorebefore he was released in august. in baseball, the play off series between the braves and giants. they're going to play tonight. these are highlights of last night. problems for brooks conrad. he had three errors in the game. and the first one would cost the braves the first run. three, now the worse comes in the 9th inning with this ground ball right through his legs. brooks conrad said afterward he wanted to dig a hole and climb in it. they play tonight at 7:00 and the winner takes that series. and the winner of tonight's game has a date in philadelphia to take on the phillies in the national league championship series. they are champaned soaked the phillies are. baez among the relievers last night when philly completed a convincing three game sweep of the reds. these guys are used to this. they have earned a third straight trip to the league
