still shut down. that is where the fire happened. we just spoke with the baltimore city fire department smoaksperson, -- spokesperson, kevin cartwright who updated us and said this is now here. and the fire is under control. as you can imagine, during rush hour, there were a lot of people impacted during this fire. >> there were a great deal of vehicles inside the bore at the time this fire actually broke out. and apparently those occupants just left their vehicles and tried to find a way out of the tunnel, which they were successful in doing so. fortunately, none of them suffered any effects of the heavily charged smoke. >> two people were inside the school bus when the fire broke out. and we do know that two people walked out of the tunnel. and they suffered smoke inhalation. they're being treated. but they did not have to be transported to a hospital. right now, again, traffic is severely delayed going northbound. and this is being shut down for
6:01 pm
about two hours. so significant delays here. but they are trying to get things back to normal. reporting live from southeast baltimore, kelly mcpherson, wjz eyewitness news. >> all right. thank you, kelly. and our complete coverage continues with sky eye chopper 13 and captain mike perry, with an aerial view of the situation. any smoke still coming out, mike? >> no. at this point, all of the smoke has been taken care of. the fire was placed under control. now, 5 to 10:00 this even --ing. we know fire officials have completely evacuated bore number 4. they were attacking this fire from the fourth bore, the one mark is pointing out now. that is the one to the right. they were attacking from the side. this is that heavy dense, black smoke. this occurred about 4:30 this afternoon. that's the smoke that never really managed to work its way out through the tubes themselves. these vents carried the majority of that smoke out, allowing those folks to escape
6:02 pm
that tunnel, without any significant smoke inhalation. that was a pretty good thing that occurred there. what you're seeing there is the traffic that was stuck behind, the 100 people or so standing at the mouth of the tunnel of bore 3. they are getting in their cars. and backing them out of that bore 3. they are allowing them first priority to go through bore 4 to continue on their way. because they have been here the longest. or waiting the longest. now, once they have cleared all of these cars out, the transportation authority police will move in. and they will get that bus. that burned hulk of of a bus that remains just inside the fort mchenry tunnel. we heard fire officials say there was very heavy smoke damage to the inside of the tunnel. and possibly some heat damage from the bus coming from the heavy fire on the bus. transportation authority police and transportation authority workers are going to have to inspect this bore number 3 before they reopen it. so we know that in about a half
6:03 pm
hour or so, bore number 4 of the fort mchenry tunnel will be open to all northbound traffic. you can expect major delays because the backup extends well back into baltimore county now. this is after they allow all of this traffic that was sitting behind the fire bus itself to get out of the way. once that traffic continues to move onto open bore number 4, things will slowly start to return to normal. looks like they still have one southbound bore also closed. we really have significant traffic interruptions, both north and southbound. at the fort mchenry tunnel now. only half of its capacity now is capable of being used at this very moment. and as you can see, the delay extends well back into baltimore county. the harbor tunnel throughway is your alternate but that only carries about half the traffic that the mchenry tunnel can carry. this is going to last well into the evening tonight. back to you on tv hill. >> thank you, captain mike
6:04 pm
perry, in sky eye chopper 13. let's hear more about the traffic delays and the impact from sharon gibala. >> as you can imagine, the delays are significant at this point. it happened around 4:15 when the bus fire started around 4:15 in the northbound lanes of the fort mchenry tunnel. at first, hay closed -- they closed down four lanes. then the left tube. and the southbound tube, one of the tubes there as well. so we're looking at significant delays. at this point, most of the traffic has been removed from the tunnels. however, traffic is backed up on 95, beyond 395. pretty much back to caton avenue at this point. traffic is being detoured at mccollma street. but you have to wait in a long line of traffic to detour there. you're going to really want to avoid 95 if possible. some alternates would include 895 northbound and the harbor tunnel. but keep in mind, you will find a lot of bailout traffic there. eastbound, another alternate.
6:05 pm
but keep in mind, you will find some delays. but not quite as significant as you're going to find now on 95 northbound. hopefully they'll get this cleared shortly. back to you. >> and of course, wjz is following this story. and we will keep you updated all evening. in less than an hour, the rescue operation official began to save the first of the 33 trapped miners in chile. here's a live look at the san jose mine, where the men have been trapped for months inside a room the size of your living room. wjz is following this developing story. sandra hughes is the latest for wjz. >> above ground, it looks like business as usual at camp hope, where relatives of the 33 trapped miners are waiting. the tension is building. because the rescue is just hours away. officials say the first miner could be pulled out by midnight in this newly tested rescue cage. the shaft surrounding it held firm during a test. though there are fears about the integrity of the mine's roof. the plan, one by one, the miners will make the trip 2,000
