the chilean mine where 33 men are trapped. when we could see the first miner emerge in this incredible story of survival. hello everyone i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. >> it's happening right now. we begin with the rescue. crews are waiting the first arrival of the miner. you see the wheel turning there to the right, that's the cable bringing the first miner up from the surface to the surface from down below. he was loaded into the pod some time ago. a rescuer went down, loaded him in there and right now he is on his way up to the surface. sandra hughes reports for wjz on the amazing progress being made right now. >> reporter: the long awaited rescue operation got under way with a mining expert entering the capsule for the long ride down. his job will be to prepare the trapped miners. the men of the first few miners

have been released. florencio avalos, mario sepulveda and carlos mamani who is from bolivia are believed to be the most skilled in the group and will be brought up first to help with any problems during the remainder of the rescue. tuesday the chilean president arrived. >> i hope that today, tonight this long journey will end with a very happy ending. this story that started as a possible tragedy, i hope it will end as a real blessing. >> reporter: the miners will be rushed to a medical triage even before being reunited with their families. the last miner out is expected to be the shift foreman luis arzuia who's been crediting in helping to save the entire group when they were completely closed off from the outside world for the first 17 days of the disaster. sandra hughes, cbs news. from start to finish it's expected to take up to 36 hours

for all of the miners to be rescued. most of the fort mchenry tunnel has finally reopened tonight after a school bus caught fire and forced riders to evacuate. kelly mcpherson has more. >> reporter: we just learned that the bus was on its way to rosedale. once the bus got to the tunnel, smoke and flames started pouring into the bus and there was no option other than to stop and wait for it. >> i'm exhausted. i was on the roof all day and can't wait for this to open up. >> reporter: cars were waiting for the fort mchenry tunnel. >> we've been here very long, for like about an hour. their answer to traffic is when something goes wrong in the tunnel is to sit on 95 and wait

versus rerouting the traffic. >> reporter: a school bus caught on fire inside -- the tunnel ventilation system pulled out thick black smoke for about an hour while it burned. people walked out of their cars and sat on the median of a typically busy highway. >> the thought of being trapped in that tunnel with the fire is pretty scary. so i was concerned we were talking about that, about the people that were down there and hoping that they were all okay. >> they were actually met by two civilians walking out of the tunnel who were just slightly over come with smoke. >> firefighters say a school bus driver and an aide escaped the flames on their own. northbound traffic didn't move for two hours. >> yeah, a little bit. i'm going to be missing my daughter's soccer game. >> reporter: mta worked together getting commuters out of their way through the adjacent tunnel. the accident will keep the

tunnel closed probably through the morning commute. >> reporter: engineers have okayed the tunnel structure. so it is safe but there's a lot of damage for a good portion of the tunnel from the heat and the smoke from this fire. a lot of electrical work has been ruined. so crews are in the tunnel right now working on it through the night in hopes of opening up again for the morning commute. but it does not seem likely. reporting live from southeast baltimore, kelly mcpherson, wjz eyewitness news. kelly, therefor morning commuters should remember northbound borg three should be close ed at this hour. major nedal hasan lived and working in maryland. his defense as requested that the hearing be pushed back to november 8th. hasan is charged with 36 counts of premeditated murder. police at the university of

maryland want a club padlocked after the stabbing of three underaged students. kai jackson has more from police. >> reporter: police are not just going after suspects in this case they are also going after a business in college park. >> police presence is heavy and visible in college park prince george's county. it followed the monday night multiple stabbings near the thirsty turtle bar. students are upset. >> i was concerned about the safety of the area, even though nothing like that has ever happened to me but sound like they are taking care of it. >> reporter: the problem apparently started inside the thirsty turtle. >> is it ever rowdy? >> there's the occasion little cscruf inside and nothing too serious. >> reporter: the three got into

an altercation with a man. at some point the bouncer threw everyone out. >> that's when the suspect produced a folding knife and stabbed and or sliced four victims, three students, one nonstudent. >> reporter: university of many maryland police chief david mitchell calls the thirsty turtle an attractive nuisance. now he's urging the liquor licenses officials to shut it down. chief mitchell sent this letter requesting a hearing. >> certainly the students that were injured last night in this fight, those were underaged. they had been served at the thirsty turtle. >> under aged drinking is a problem? >> i wouldn't say it's a problem but it is present. >> reporter: those stabbed range in age from 19 to 23. the students stabbed were treated for minor injuries and

there's no word when the water will be restored. the future for baltimore city teachers hangs in the balance tonight with the vote less than two days away. some teachers are trying to hold out a teachers contract until both sides know what stands. >> reporter: city teachers asked to approve a ground breaking union contract. >> this is a lot of what teachers ask for. >> reporter: teachers president says the reforms in the new contract eliminates pay raises, the contract includes raises but not everyone is thrilled. so far 135 teachers have signed an online petition to postpone the vote. >> i'm not asking to take it off the table. i'm asking for a delay. >> reporter: petition organizer

robin bingum thinks the contract includes many pluses but feels the contract is being rushed. >> reporter: union leaders believe most teachers spoát the contract after attending informational meeting, though the teacher evaluation process, english insists there's nothing to fare. >> we're going to help shape that so that it is there for teachers. so that it just not has test scores. >> i think at least a month should be given to really have a serious community wide discussion about whether baltimore wants to go in this direction or not. >> vote early if you can and vote yes on thursday. teachers can vote early on wednesday over at the union headquarters, but the official voting will happen on thursday from noon to 3:00 at

moments ago. you are not seeing him there, you are seeing very excited rescue workers. but he was just released to the surface. he is the first of 33 miners to be rescued. it's going to take about 30 hours for all of those miners to eventually reach the surface. but that is their first great celebration. moving on, a terrible scene in fargo north carolina as an apartment fire leaves 150 people homeless. no one was injured in this fire. the flames could be seen for several miles. fire officials suspect a grill started the fire in the three story building. three firefighters had to be rescued after the roof collapsed. the building is thought to be a total loss. the mexican police commander who is investigating the reported shooting of david heartily has been killed. a texas sheriff says the severed head of rolando florez was left in a suitcase at a

mexican army post. threats from gangs have flooded the area. tracy tresso vanished on her way to a rock concert. now her husband is on trial for her murder. mike hellgren has phone recordings. >> reporter: this newly released surveillance video from a walgreens shows the last known images of gesto alive. in recorded phone calls played in court, he confronted her after learning she was cheating with a coworker, she told him she wanted to end their marriage. she was supposed to meet that lover the night she disappeared while on the way to a motley

dennis he was too controlling and jealous, always accusing her of cheating. her body was never found. this is one of only a handful of cases ever tried in maryland without a body. they thought they were going to die at sea, but tonight they are all with their families. the coast guard towed a disabled boat. the boat was taking on water when the coast guard found them. the reason for this one is new, a local band stopped the truck in the middle of the 101 freeway in los angeles and played a few songs. they left in another vehicle leaving the truck locked and parked. police had to get a tow truck to move it. the stunt wasn't music to the

start building in. it's getting some moisture from the gulf of mexico. we already have showers. this area of low pressure is going to translate into a developing low pressure by early on thursday. and by late in the day, it's going to get stronger. it'll get down to new england. a pretty strong storm, it's going to start bringing a lot of moisture from the atlantic ocean. maybe a half inch to 3/4 of an inch of rain here on thursday. so tomorrow, a nice day with high pressure, but that low pressure as it zooms up to our east, northeast cool breezy conditions. look how tight those iso bars are. that means a lot of winds, very, very tight pressure grading. the the rain should be out of here by thursday. some of for us it'll get chilly and breezy but lots of sunshine coming in our direction. a real quick look at paula.
