[ cheers and applause ] . >> reporter: one by one, they're getting a hero's welcome, 69 days in the making. this 34-year-old was the 12th man out. he hugged his girlfriend before going for a check up. so far, all of the miners are -- this one has a history of lung disease, he dropped to his knees in prayer when he made it to the surface.

this was the first miner to arrive. the capsule was 22 inches wide and the trip up, 15 minutes. and the men are pulled to safety faster than expected, quickly and 39 minutes apart. this is the second miner and he passed out souvenir rocks and whipped the crowd into a frenzy. >> reporter: people are cheering for the men. and they estimated 1 million viewers tuned in last night. >> and this is a magic night. >> reporter: church bells tolled in wild celebrations. and the residents know the miners by name. the phoenix will bring in the last miner sometime tomorrow

morning. and rescue workers were concerned it could jam or overheat or they could experience a panic attack, but they're relieved and so far, everything's gone well and they hope to get the last miner out without a hitch. and they've offered six months of psych tray yours truly trick follow -- psychiatric follow up. and all lanes of the fort mchenry tunnel are reopened after a fire on a school bus caused traffic delays. and traffic, as ux see, it's -- as you can see it's moving smoothly, that was not the case yesterday during rush hour when the drivers had to run for safety. wjz-13 is live outside of the tunnel. derek valcourt has more on what caused the chaos. >> reporter: hi, jessica, the

tunnel, now reopened and officials say it's flowing fine and a different picture from yesterday afternoon when the thick, black smoke billowed. >> investigators today worked on repairs inside the fort mchenry tunnel after a bus caught fire during the evening rush hour. >> we've been here quite a while, like an hour. >> >> reporter: there were no children, but a driver and an aide had to make a run for it. >> they were met by two civilians overcome with smoke. >> reporter: the drivers inside the tunnels couldn't see anything and thick black smoke filled the tunnel faster than the ventilation could fill it out. everyone made it out safely. >> the thought of being trapped with the fire was scary, we were talking about that and the

people down there and hoping they were okay. >> reporter: the tunnel is open and there was no structural damage to the tube. and the damage was only to the electrical systems and cosmetic damage as well. we're live in the tunnel. and again, amazingly, no one was injured in the fire. and military court is hearing the testimony in the fort hood shootings. hasan lived and worked in maryland before he carried out the worst mass shooting in an american shooting. and a sergeant blinded in the attack testified this morning and the judge made no mention of the defense hearing of the delay. back here in maryland, the police have arrested a man who stabbed three students in college park. ron matz has an update.

>> reporter: the police arrested a 21-year-old and charged him with attempted murder. he stabbed three outside of the thirsty turtle. the chief of police has requested an emergency hearing and they have the bar padlocked. all victims are treated and released from the hospital. don, back to you. >> and also, they'll face first degree assault charges. the controversial head of the public school system washington, d.c. announced her resignation. she's been the target of criticism after she fired teachers who didn't perform up to standards. she'll be replaced on an interim basis. an announcement as city hall announces they'll release

take a look outside. lots of sunshine and a beautiful afternoon. and we're in the 80s for the temperatures and we're going up to 68 degrees this afternoon. that's on par for afternoon. already, up to 61 in baltimore and 60s out there and 64 in

d.c. and it's drying out significantly and the dew points in the 30s. and the winds are turning to the north east. they're going to pick up as the next storm approaches in the area. and there's one part of it down here. that's going to be the dominant part. there's also energy to the northwest. it will move our way tomorrow and the clouds move our way and the rain breaks up. and it will be heavy tomorrow. and the winds are like a nor'easter here. theren and the other thing is it will lock in the cooler air and trap in the even cooler air and we'll see the temperatures struggle to get out of the 50s tomorrow afternoon. this is not happening here. up state new york and pennsylvania, there's a chance for this to tap into snow. that's the type of storm it's going to be. and there's rain heavy at times and a few showers lingering friday.

and the storm pulls away. notice these lines friday, that indicates the wind and we'll have a cooler day and clouds around and we'll start to calm down towards the weekend. one more thing in the tropics. this is what we have with pall latch moving now, just off to the north and the north east, that's where most of the forecast takes it. and there's a chance it could come close and a lot of the forecast keeping this on top of cuba. here are the forecast tracks. and you can see, it's drifting to the north and most takes it over the season. there's a lot of high mountains to rip it apart. and it will lose the strength and it's something we'll watch for you. we're getting up to 68 degrees and we'll get down into the 40s and the clouds come in and tomorrow, the rain becoming heavy throughout the day and windy and cooler and just about 61 for the high. some aren't getting out of the
