oocialght look right now. we understand his wife has been there waiting. it takes about 20 minutes or so for the capsule to be pulled out of the mines with 20 minutes to go down. and 20 minutes to come back up. and as we continue to take a look at the images here. you can see the joy and inhalation. and the president of bolivia has also been out here. awaiting these miners as they come up. a number had medical conditions. initially, there was a great deal of concern that perhaps the chilean government was not going to allow the images to be seen out of support for them. but they did it because it was such a pos event going on. let's hear the story now of this amazing rescue. miner after miner, after miner. rescuers keep pulling miracles

to the surface. by midday, more than half of the 33 trapped men had reached safety. and reaching loved ones they hadn't seen in 69 days. after the 17th miner emerged. crews spent the handle. crews sent it back down the narrow hole. it has been a remarkably small glitch. >> all of the people around the world have learned a lesson. a lesson of unity, courage, a lesson of faith. a lesson of hope. >> chilean officials issue sending this live video. >> so far they all appear in good health. mario gomez hugged his wife and dropped to his knees and prayed.

what we're looking at here is a vehicle apparently struck in the rear then spun around and driven into the guardrail. the vehicle in front was rescued. the driver was just rescued a few moments ago. the chesapeake bay is a blocked. at this time, there is no word of seriousness of injuries. but as you can see, the entirety of the bridge is closed in both directions. and the backup extends, at least over onto the queen anne's county side. we'll stay on scene and keep you updated. other big story. a 7-year-old girl, sexually assaulted while walking home from a playground. mike schuh has details on the search for the four men responsible. mike? >> mary, there are a lot of

questions police can't answer about what happened to a 7-year- old girl as she was walking home from the playground in columbia yesterday. she was playing here outside her apartment. around 7:00, she went to leave to go home. it's here that her path crossed that of four men. >> she told hur police officers that as she was walking through a field, she was approached by four men with dread locks. they grabbed her and sexually assaulted her. >> they held her down and sexually assaulted her. >> the three of them left on motor bikes. one was sort of on a motor scooter. >> knowing how to investigate crimes against children and sexual assaults. >> her description to the officers was that she didn't know them and hadn't seen them before. >> they're described as black with dread locks.

thinking that prevented a disaster. wjz is live at the tunnel. derek valcourt has more. >> crews at work now repairing the electrical systems inside. police say the tunnel itself is safe, despite yesterday's dramatic fire. this is the charred remainders. bus that caught fire monday night. the driver and an aide were forced to make a run for it. >> thank goodness we don't have this situation every single day. captain cory stuck behind the bus in the tunnel. >> and police say it worked exactly as planned, clearing the smoke quickly. >> we had no issues of smoke- related problems associated

with the fire because of the exhaust system. >> it snarled traffic for hours, on and near 95. >> trying to get home. >> and here i am. look. near the tunnel. >> once the bus was towed out, inspecting the tunnel for structural damage became top priority. engineers worked throughout the night, by morning, giving the all-clear to open it back up. >> it is structurally sound. and traffic is flowing through it. i can see myself going on the way to work. no worries. >> repairs will take a few more days. cosmetic tiles will be worked on through the week. most of that will be worked on through the middle of the night. so most drivers won't even notice. >> reporter: cameras inside the tunnel captured the accident. that video has not been released. sky eye chopper 13 was over the crash area at the

intersection of fort smallwood road and candidatal road. that's why a woman was hit by a car, walking before 6:30 this morning. she was dead at the scene. with maryland's november elections, just weeks away, there's word that state senator ulysses currie is no longer running unopposed. denise is in the newsroom. >> bell is running as a write- in candidate against senator currie. a federal grand jury indicted curie on mail fraud and extortion. he is accused of using his benefits to influence a grocery store chain. he has pleaded not guilty. >> curry has stepped down until the case is resolved. a murder trial under way in baltimore county. although the victim's body was never found. tonight, the jury hears the

heated conversations between tracy tetso and her husband that shed light into the rocky relationship and a possible motive. mike hellgren is there and has details from the courtroom. and you will hear the graphic conversations in a moment. prosecutors also brought in a cell phone expert who wfnlt to went to the area where tracy tetso was believed to be bench she disappeared. >> you don't want to [ bleep ] me over. >> well, you need to act like an adult. >> you need me to act like an adult? you need to act like somebody who [ bleep ] and [ bleep ] >> dennis is accused of murdering tracy in march 2005,

24 men have been pulled from the mine. we are awaiting number 25. avalos is 29 years old. the men have spent 69 days underground. and we will check with the rescue effort under way now in just a few minutes. the joy in chile is in sharp contrast to those in baltimore who have seen loved ones gunned down. efforts to produce the violence received a cash infusion from the feds today. >> it's not known who pulled the trigger that ended darrell hood's life. one of five murders in baltimore this past weekend. >> the crime rate is going down. >> i don't see how. with the rate the way it is. i don't see how it's going down at all. overall, gun crime is down 15%.

but this is a call for action. >> a $300,000 federal grant is being added. because many of those in baltimore die at the hands of those who have held guns before. >> 50% of all of the people we charge with homicide each year and baltimore and nearly 50% of all of the people we charge with nonfatal shootings in baltimore have one thing in common. prior gun arrests in their background. we want to keep these guys from reoffending again. >> so far this year, people have been arrested with charges. the department's gun registry unit also keeps taps on 463 offenders. 75% of whom have not been rearrested on any charge. >> we've increased the monitoring of bad guys in the city. >> the goal is to stop murders before happening. by keeping as many guns as

5:30. 64 degrees and clear right now. good evening. thank you for staying with eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. an arrest in the stabbing of three students near the university of maryland campus. the violence raises more concerns about a popular off- campus bar. weijia jiang has more details on the investigation. >> reporter: police say the man nay arrested not only stabbed three university of maryland students but also his own brother. >> 1:30 a.m. tuesday. chaos spilled in after three university of maryland students are stabbed outside a bar. early wednesday morning, police arrested 21-year-old leonardo ramos. >> he left the scene. he ran from us. he hid for a number of hours from us. he changed his appearance.

>> ramos faces several charges, including many counts of attempted second-degree murder. police say the violence started inside the first, where the underaged student was drinking. the victim started fighting. they were all thrown out when ramos pulled a knife. they also a ramos stabbed his brother, likely by accident. chief david mitchyle say -- mitchell says the bar is partly to blame. he says the bar is infamous for opening doors to the underaged. and wants to padlock it for good. >> they're served. and in many cases, they're overserved. >> reporter: meanwhile, nearby businesses say the turtles' reputation is hurting their reputation as well. but they say shutting it down is too extreme. >> we know there are a lot of partying and the academics. we need our social side.

the miners are being pulled out, wearing protective glasses, until their eyes can adjust to the daylight. the weakened immune system can also make them vulnerable to viruses. in addition to the physical problems, it's important to each -- that each of the miners meet with counselors who look for emotional symptoms, such as nightmares, panic attacks and attacks and anxiety. a stepmother faces charges that she interneared -- interfered with investigation. >> >> she is the only person accused in her stepdaughter's appearance. baker admitted she wrote a fake ransom note to throw off the investigation. investigators now believe someone killed 10-year-old zera baker. in court today, bake are's attorney said he -- baker's attorney said he would file a motion to have bond reduced. next court appearance is

civilian michelle harper recounted hiding under a desk in terror. her dramatic 911 call tape is played. in it, she pleads for help over and over again, saying, hurry, hurry, hurry, please. the operator replies, they're on the way, suite heart. >> during -- sweetheart. >> during the tape, you can hear the pop, pop, pop of gunfire. >> reporter: harper was overcome with emotion after hearing the tape. >> it was very hard. you could tell it was difficult for her to be there. she was reliving it. >> reporter: hasan may have spared the life of another worker. denise williams said that hasan told her to leave the room. when she did, he opened fire. >> hasan is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the november 2009 attack. you have been getting sticker shock on your mobile phone bill, those days may be over.

federal authorities want all carriers to notify people before they run up calls. the proposed regulations would require wireless carriers to send either voice or text alerts, as customers reach their monthly usage limits. the last of free airlines meals has taken off for good. continental announces that they are no longer sending meals under six hours. they were the last to offer free meals. they will now begin to sell food on all of its flights. changes at starbucks may have you waiting longer for your mocha grande frappuccino. they want them concentrating on making no more than two drinks at a time, as opposed to a whole batch. the company says it will lead to fresher and hotter drinks.
