they are breathing fresh air for the first time in 65 days. as ty chandler reports, the operation has been going faster than expected. [ applause ] >> reporter: miner after mainer, after -- miner after miner. rescuers keep pulling miracles to the surface. by midday, more than half of the 33 trapped men had reached safety. embracing loved ones they hadn't seen for 69 days. after the 17th miner emerged, the door handle on the rescue capsule broke. crews spent minutes making repairs. it was a minor glitch in what was a remarkably smooth operation. >> people around the world have learned a lesson. a lesson of unity, of courage. a lesson of faith. a lesson of hope. >> reporter: chile is sending

live video of these extraordinary reunions around the world. >> so far, the miners all appear to be in good health, including the oldest. 63-year-old mario gomez. he hugged his wife and dropped to his knees and prayed. the fittest of the miners, florenceio, made the journey to the surface. mario sepulveda passed out rocks. all of the rescued men are being taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. these miners were trapped underground longer than anyone on record. rescuers hope to have them all out by tonight. ty chandler, cbs news, new york. >> and here again is a live look at the rescue operation at the san san jose mine. they have researched invitation to presidential manors and tv

invitations. the discussion between tracy and dennis tetso. sheds new light. mike has the latest from the courtroom. >> reporter: vic, most of these very graphic and very turbulent conversations revolve around tracy tetso's affair, with a man named christian sunot. he will not be testifying at this trial. he died just a few months before it started. >> reporter: turmoil over the affair that tore apart dennis and tracy tetso's marriage, unfolded in court. as prosecutors played phone conversations and heated arguments just weeks before tracy's disappearance. >> you know what, you need to make a [ bleep ] decision. >> about what? >> about us. that's what you need to do. >> i think i have. >> have you? >> you just don't want to

listen to it. >> dennis found out he was on her way to meet a lover. her body was never found. although police found her car, seen on surveillance video, pulling into a motel in glen burnie. more surveillance showed her going into a walgreens. tracy was angry that he tried to get a restraining order against her lover. >> i hate your [ bleep ] guts for that. and this is why i don't feel well is a need to try to mend had because i don't think there is any need to mend it. >> their marriage turned rockier. >> you're not my keeper. you're not the person who runs my life. you are not god. you're not god. >> but dennis never threatened his wife in the recordings. >> if i hated your guts that much, i wouldn't even [ bleep ] sleep in the bed with you. i wouldn't even want to carry a conversation with you. but i don't hate your guts. one day you'll figure that out. >> they already said in opening statements it is a circumstantial case.

there is no evidence. >> you made your [ bleep ] bed. lie in it. >> good. then get out of my house. >> he looked at christian sunot's cell phone records and found out he was not in the areas where tracy tetso was last seen before she disappeared. however, dennis tetso was at the harbor and near the area where she was near her car. >> and dennis tetso made bail shortly after his arrest last year. he is currently on home monitoring. we want to update the breaking news we told you about. a major accident tying up traffic on the bay bridge. >> and denise, there are still major backups on the bay bridge now. sky eye chopper 13 was on the first on the scene. three vehicles are involved in this, shutting down the westbound side. it happened while there was two- way traffic going on. police are still working to clear the scene right now. last check, traffic remains backed up past the kent narrows

bridge. denise, back to you. >> one person was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. travel through the fort mchenry tunnel is back to normal. a different picture from just 24 hours ago. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene now. at this time last night, it was shut down because of a bus fire. wjz is live. derek valcourt with the latest on the investigation into the bus fire. >> reporter: the tunnel reopened just after the morning rush hour. today, police say it is structurally safe. despite that dramatic fire. >> reporter: this is the charred remains of the bus that caught fire during rush hour tuesday night. though no children were on board the buzz, operated by the durham school bus company in rosedale, the driver and an aide were forced to make a run for it. >> thank goodness we don't have this situation every single day. >> reporter: captain cory mckinsy, in response to the

fire, which forced police to shut down the tunnels and evacuate cars stuck behind the bus in the tunnel. >> and police give some credit to the exhaust fan system inside the tunnel, which they say worked exactly as planned, clearing the smoke quick lei quickly. >> we had no issues of smoke- related problems. >> because it snarled traffic for hours on or near 95. >> trying to get home. and here i am, stuck near the tunnel. >> reporter: inspecting the tunnel for damage became top priority. engineers began working throughout the night. by morning, giving the all- clear to open it up. >> it is structurally sound. and traffic is flowing through it. i did see myself on the way to work. no worries. >> electrical repairs under way right now. those could take a couple more days. and hen some cosmetic repairs need to be done to the tile inside bore 3. that work will be done mostly

in the middle of the night. so most drivers will never experience any of the delays or backup as a result. at the fort mchenry tunnel. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> and cameras captured the accident. that video has not been rely -- released. a 49-year-old woman was struck and killed. it happened just after 6:00 had this morning on fort small wood roads and kendall roads. police say they tried to follow this. police say there is no indication that alcohol or excessive speed were factors in the accident. howard county police are investigating a disturbing attack right now. a 7-year-old girl says she was sexually assaulted by four men near a playground near columbia. and mike schuh has more. mike? >> reporter: police have concerns about what happened with the victim being 7 years old. that makes her a first or a second grade er. and there are a lot of unanswered questions. >> reporter: she was playing here, outside her apartment.

around 7:00, she went to leave to go home. when she crossed an open area. it's here that her path crossed that of four men. >> she told our police officers that as she was walking through a field, she was approached by four men with dread locks. they grand her and sexually assaulted her. >> they held her down and touched her. she remembered this telling detail. >> the three of them left on motor bikes. and one of them, it was sort of a motor scooter. and the other on a bicycle. >> a special squad is working this case, knowing how to investigate crimes against children and sexual assaults! her description to the officers was that she didn't know them and hadn't seen them before. >> they're described as black with dread locks. police aren't sure of their ages. residents here are alarmed. >> the neighborhood is quiet. but you got a lot of people moving around. but stuff like that do happen. and it's surprising in this area, it's sad. it's sad. it is. -- t is sad. >> reporter: with the weather so nice. there are a lot of kids still

>> well, the storm going to start strengthening. and it really bombs out when it hits new england. that thursday night into friday morning. when that happens for us, the heaviest of the rain is going to be gone. but winds start to kick up. we could have wind gusts 30 to 35 miles an hour. that will tap in. our highs by friday afternoon, may not get out of the 50s. good news is, it looks like this will keep moving on as we head into the weekend. we'll have that forecast coming up. right now, back inside. >> thank you, bernadette and bob. maryland's major political party turn their attention to voter turnout. both democrats and republicans have plans for getting out the vote on november 2nd. >> your presence is no longer required. but your ballot certainly is. >> absolutely critical. critical for both parties. >> as maryland's top democrat and republican demonstrated here, when taking advantage of early voting to cast their september primary ballots, you don't have to go to the polls on november 2nd, as long as you

take advantage of one of the other options open to voters this year. >> we'll be doing all sorts of things. primarily what people are learning about now is early votes. we're stressing that. both by mail. >> we have been encouraging people to request absentee ballots if they're traveling. if they're unable to get to the polls. and also going early. >> don norris says while turnout is important, he doesn't expect early voting to have much impact. >> other states use early voting. there has been no evidence that it increases or decreases vote being. it's simply another way to make voting more convenient for people. but it doesn't affect turnout! it gives an edge. with both parties putting a lot of energy into baltimore county. >> because it's got so many votes. many democrats. and many, many democrats who vote republican.

short time ago. the 26th miner was pulled to safety. now leaving only seven men in the underground bunker. count on us to update you throughout the evening, as the rescues continue. here in maryland, chaos near the university of maryland campus. several students were stabbed during a fight. weijia jiang reports from college park with more on the suspect in custody. >> police say the men they arrested not only stabbed three university of maryland students, but also his own brother. >> reporter: 1:30 a.m. tuesday, chaos spilled into college park, after three university of maryland students are stabbed outside a bar. early wednesday morning, police arrested 21-year-old leonardo ramos, who they say is the attacker. >> that he left the scene. he ran from us. he hid for a number of hours from us. he changed his appearance. >> ramos faces several charges, including many counts of attempted second-degree murder. police say the violence started

inside the thirsty turtle, where underaged students started drinking. they were all thrown out when ramos pulled a knife. detectives also a ramos stabbed his 23-year-old brother roho zay -- jose, likely by accident. the bar has been cited for trouble. he says the bar is infamous for serving to underaged. >> they are served. and in many cases, they are overserved. >> reporter: meanwhile, many nearby businesses say they -- their reputations are harmed as well. >> we come because we know there is a lot of partying. and with the academics. we need our social bars. we need our lives. >> reporter: calling for an emergency hearing to reverse the thirsty turtle alcohol license. >> if you have an establishment

lakes. these combine into one area of low pressure as it jumps to the atlantic coast. it will become basically like a nor'easter. it will be pretty strong. a lot of wind with it. a lot of rain to the north. 1 to 3 inches across new england. looking at anywhere from half to an inch and a quarter of rain during the day on thursday. ending late thursday night or friday morning. during the afternoon, friday. may see a brief sprinkle or shower. as the backlash from this brings chilly air to our region to the north. there's a good chance of higher elevations. they'll see wet snow on friday. yeah. first of the season really. low pressure. there you see it. as it heads across virginia. really wraps up off new jersey. that's when we get the winds. chilly conditions for friday. but the sunshine will be back for the most part. paula downgraded now to a one. it's going to continue to weaken as it moves across much of cuba there. and now through the end of the

it began just after midnight today. they have been trapped for 33 miles underground after that cave-in. people have been watching from president obama to the white house to pope benedict xvi. he said he has watched their ordeal very closely and is inspired by their unity. one american astronaut has a unique perspective on the astronauts. he was trapped for 132 days, following a fire. he says the biggest obstacle the miners will have to overcome is their loneliness. >> i think it's the greatest day of their life, when i came back from space after five months of tough circumstances out there. it was a glorious moment to get back on earth, the fresh air, the green. just everything about the elemental things of the earth that you miss. and they're down in a hole for the last 68 days. >> at least they had each

other, though. no one in recorded history has survived as long, trap underground, as these men. and at first, it was feared they would not be rescued until christmas. but, denise, they will be with their families this christmas. back to you. >> absolutely. thank you, mary. a gruesome discovery after the disappearance of an american. the key mexican investigator has now been murdered. >> reporter: the search for the body of david hartley took a shocking turn. it's been almost two weeks since his wife reported he had been shot while the couple was jet skiing on the lake, on the border of texas and mexico. but now comes the news of a murder of a police officer involved in the case. >> we got word that one of the investigators in the case in mexico had been delivered to an army headquarters.

>> rolando was the leading investigator. he reportedly gave information about the case to the media. and for that, it is believed he was killed. his head delivered in a suitcase. it was another blow to hartley's widow, who says she is struggling through her grief. >> we're going through this, too. and i cannot express how much i ache for him. and his family. >> reporter: the area where hartley was reportedly shot is part of a turf battle between drug cartel, which have used beheadings in the past to send messages. terrorism experts who suspect zeta cartel is behind both murders. the gang is notoriously violent and extremely territorial. >> what they were trying to do is let everybody know from the u.s. government to the mexican authorities that this is their geography. this is their gateway into the very lucrative north american market. stay out. >> reporter: the governor of texas says investigators should not back down because the worst thing would be to let the

terrorists start calling the shots. sandra hughes, wjz eyewitness news. >> mexican authorities say the search for hartley's body is expected to continue. although they say it's becoming more and more unlikely that his body will ever be found. dramatic testimony from survivors on the worst-ever shooting allegedly by a psychiatrist. major nidal hasan is charged in the attack that left 15 people dead. and a hearing today. an army sergeant wounded in the assault said he heard hasan say, and i quote, god is great in arabic before opening fire. the court will determine if he should stand trial on murder charges. alex demetrick reports, efforts to reduce violence received a cash infusion from the feds today. >> it's not known who pulled the trigger that ended 22-year- old darrell hood's life, one of

five in baltimore this past weekend. >> the crime rate is going down. i don't see how. i mean, with the murder rate the way it is. i don't see how it's going down at all. >> reporter: but the city leaders were back before the cameras again today. >> overall gun crime is down 15%. but this is not a cause for celebration. it is a call for further action. >> reporter: by stepping up a strategy to keep guns and criminals apart. a $300,000 federal grant is being added. because many of those murdered by gunfire in baltimore die at the hands of those who have held guns before. >> 50% of all of the people we charge with homicide each year in baltimore, and nearly 50% of all of the people we charge with nonfatal shootings in baltimore have one thing in common. prior gun arrests in their background. we want to keep these guys from reoffending again. >> reporter: so far this year, 700 people have been arrested. and police have seen 1800 guns

in baltimore. the department's gun reg tree unit also keeps tabs on 463 offenders. 75% of whom have not been rearrested on any charge. >> we've increased the monitoring of bad guys in the city. >> reporter: the goal is to stop murders before they happen, by keeping as many guns as possible out of the hands of criminals. a goal too late for some. we can only hope now for justice. >> i have confidence to try to find out who killed my son. >> alex demetrick, wjz eyewitness news. >> now, besides helping the to fund the gun registry program, it will go towards a johns hopkins study of how effective it is. the chesapeake foundation is calling on maryland lawmakers. the five steps include doubling the so-called flush tax on monthly sewage bills and requiring tree buffers along streams statewide. it's all part of an effort to
