the incredible conclusion to the rescue that kept the world watching and waiting. hello, everybody. here's what people are talking about tonight. victory at camp hope t. last chilean miner is rescued. you are looking at the san jose mine. >> reporter: the last of the 33 miners is finally free. 54-year-old luis was the shift leader who held his men together throughout the ordeal. one by one the miners made the journey emerging into the spotlight after 69 days underground, greeting their loved ones with hugs, tears and prayers. in one case a cheer. >> he has been waiting to meet his baby daughter born while he

was underground. >> today i think that all the chileans have learned a less on, a less on of unity, of courage, a less on of hope. >> reporter: the only mechanical glitch all day came when workers had to fix a broken door latch. one has pneumonia and severally need dental surgery. one of the miners was nicknamed the doctor for taking care of his colleagues underground. the rescue happened live. around the clock the tv audiences around the world. even president obama was watching. >> let me commend so many people of goodwill, not only in chile but from the united states and around the world who are lending a hand. >> pope benedict offered a blessing in spanish. many emerged wearing t-shirts that summed up their feelings, thank you lord. now, no one was prouder of

the successful rescue than a tech company right here in maryland t. trapped miners worry a harness that monitored their blood pressure and their violateses. police are searching for a robber who has struck 5 times in the mount vernon neighborhood. he robbed businesses and people. he had a knife and in one case a gun. police say when he didn't get his way the man stabbed his target. if you recognize him please call police. another unsolved robbery targets a man. police say that the suspect walked right into the building and went into the man's apartment. kelly mcpherson explains how it happened. >> reporter: the man say the man knocking on his door was

working for the building. but instead the man was there to rob the elderly man. on the 12th floor of this apartment building a 73-year- old man was bound by duct tape and thrown to his bathroom floor. he thought he had let in the exterminate or. as you can imagine the victim was shocked. he's given us what he can but at this point we don't have much to go on. >> reporter: police say the suspect knocked on the door saying he was there to exterminate the apartment. the building had just posted this sign saying exterminate ors would be coming around but they would announce the specific time. >> i thought it was extremely safe and i do still feel pretty safe but i'm starting to question. >> every day we hear about questions all getting mugged or robbed. >> reporter: neighbors tell me the man had just returned from his monthly trip to the bank. so they believe the robbers had

to be familiar with this man's routine and had time to plan the attack. >> he then told the victim not to scream or yell for help or he threatened to break his arm. >> you have to be smart but i feel safe in the neighborhood, yes. >> reporter: the apartment building has surveillance cameras but it's unclear if the suspect was caught on video. people who live in the building tell me it's possible he avoided the cameras by taking the stairwell. police say the suspect got away with cash and some valuable family heirlooms. all clear, engineers give the go ahead for -- to go through a tunnel. caught fire in the tunnel last night shutting down northbound through midnight. tonight the tunnel is inspected and while the electrical system

was not available for comment. a baltimore woman steps into the road and is hit and killed by a passing car. it happened this morning in pasadena. 41-year-old was following a group of people, they made it across, she did not. police say there was no marked crosswalk, no indication of speed or drugs to blame. terrifying testimony today from the victims of fort hood. # witnesses told a military court that he prayed out loud in air air a pick and then fired. will determine if there's enough evidence. baltimore police got a lot of money today. reports on a federal grant to help police catch repeat offenders. >> it's not known who pulled the trigger that ended

darrell's life. >> they got on the television and state the crime rate is going down, i don't see how it's going down. >> reporter: but the city's leaders were back before the cameras today. >> overall gun crime is down 15%. but this is not a cause for celebration. it is a call for further action. >> by stepping up a strategy to keep guns and criminals apart. a 300,000-dollar federal grant. >> 50% of all the people we charge with homicide each year in baltimore and nearly 50% we charge with nonfatal shootings have one thing in common. prior gun arrests in their background. we want to keep these guys from refounding again. >> reporter: so far this year, 70 people have been arrested with illegal gun charges.

he later turned the gun on himself. while the search continues for a missing 10-year-old girl, lisa baker is accused of obstructing justice with a fake ransom note. no one outside of her household has seen the girl in a month. the girl's father hasn't been ruled out as a suspect. police are now focusing on. she disappeared on her way to meet her lover at a concert. the heated phone calls between her and her husband who now stands accused. >> turmoil over the affair was on display in court as played phone calls. >> you know what, you need a make a decision.

a 5.1. the strongest earthquake ever in oklahoma. just east of oklahoma city. right there in the plains. around here we have some clouds moving in overnight and looks like a pretty wet day. 48 now with clear skies. the dewpoint is down to 44 and it's a pretty good indication of how chilly it can get tonight. a 48 in oakland and 60 in ocean city. so quite a range of 40s and 60 and the clouds are just beginning to move into southwest virginia. tomorrow they will come back out of the east again and bring up moisture from the atlantic ocean and pick up during the day and tomorrow night. by friday they will be quite strong but shifting to the northwest as the moisture will be leaving us. first we have to deal with a lot of rain. michigan, indiana, now into

ohio. southwest virginia, some showers there. this is all moving to our region. once this energy gets to the atlantic coast it's going to develop a low pressure, probably around jersey and then head up toward new england. we're going to start seeing northeasterly winds coming in off the land bringing a lot of moisture. looking for about an inch to about an inch and a half of rain with the system. most of the heaviest rain would be up toward new york area. 1 to 3 inches up toward new england. the adirondacks and portions of vermont and new hampshire would definitely see some wet snow. for us a wet rainy cool day. by friday it's pretty much gone. it will get breezy and chilly, but we will see some sunshine on friday. it's going to be moving across.
