rejected, a radical new plan as a baltimore teachers shut down. >> pay on student performance isn't fair -- why some say pay on student performance is not fair. good evening everyone, i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. >> baltimore teachers just rejected a new contract that would have tied teacher pay to how students perform in the classroom. it was a proposal that had both sides up in arms. >> reporter: the union says it's not giving up. a radically different contract proposal brought school officials to vote out thursday night. not enough yes votes were cast, but the district is not

dropping the idea. to base salaries on student performance. >> parents aren't held accountable, students certainly aren't so why are we the only ones ever held accountable. >> reporter: more than 1,500 voted against the idea and 1,100 voted in favor. people say they weren't given enough information. >> every time you ask them for information, they say it's still in preliminary stages. >> when i voted for barack obama who's the president of the united states of america, i did not stand in line this

long. >> reporter: the line snakes through three hall ways all the way to the doors of the school. only 500 people voted yesterday which means 6,300 people have to vote today within three hours. >> we have never ever had that many people come before. so it was just a surprise for us and so we will evaluate that. >> reporter: teachers are working on a contract right now that expires at the end of october. the union president tells me she thinks she can reinform everyone, hold another vote and have this passed by october 28th. reporting live in north baltimore, kelly mcpherson. >> thank you, kelly. the baltimore city school district says in a statement tonight that it will work with the no voters to answer questions about the contracts so it can pass. it's back, flu season is here and someone in maryland has already come down with a

years for fights between the two men. firefighters battled flames on owings mills road. no one was hurt inside. in chile tonight some of the rescued miners are sleeping in their own beds for the first time in more than two months. inez perez has more on where they go from here. >> reporter: the 33 rescued miners saw their newfound fame sprawled across the headlines. still wearing protective sunglasses, the miners met with president sebastian pin era. he said we will never again allow workers to work in such inhumane conditions. doctors say all miners remain tense after their subterranean ordeal. they're being released once medical exams are complete.

last year when it was 79.24%. not all passengers are complaining. >> we've had a pretty good experience here. i think that maybe, i've set the bar so low for all flights any place in the united states. >> reporter: eyewitness news contacted vwi marshall for a comment on its on-time performance. by contrast, vwi marshall's competitors, reagan national and dallas international both rank in the top 12 for on time departures. >> not really surprised at all. i mean i know they have a lot of security and there's weather and stuff like that. so, i take that into account. seattle, portland oregon and salt lake city have the best on time departure rankings. >> kai, thank you. new york's jfk, miami and o' hare rank the worse.

along came a burglar who broke into her home, and ransacked the place making off with several valuable tuffets. fortunately, geico had recently helped her with homeowners insurance. she got full replacement on her tuffets. the burglar was later captured when he was spotted with whey on his face. call geico and see how much you could save on homeowners insurance. it is 48 degrees and mainly clear in central m. maryland tonight. this crash scene near sacramento was the end of a wild police pursuit. authorities say a 50-year-old woman crashed into two homes, two cars and a fire hydrant before ending up underneath a parked car. she was treated for minor injuries then arrested on a variety of charges.

the woman was first wanted on suspicion of dui. two teenagers have been arrested for a fire in a church in the city of oklahoma. several children who were at the church were forced to run for cover. the pastor says none of the suspects or victims belonged to the church. a neighborhood feud in michigan fuels the taunting of a dying 7-year-old girl. jennifer tetof parked a black truck with a black coffin. the couple has apologized but the family has not accepted. -- her family doctor said

so it's going to be a very windy day. particularly in the afternoon, we'll see a picture of clouds and sunshine. low pressure gave us the rain today is continuing to develop off the coast of new england that's going to move up there with heavy rain over massachusetts. southern portions of maine, you can see how things are evolving there. heavy rain entering connecticut, rhode island, that's all moving to the east- northeast. to the west, still an area of disturbed weather and clouds, maybe a brief sprinkle or shower can come to the region during the afternoon tomorrow. because winds will be coming back out of the northwest. generally drying out as they come down the mountains but it's strong enough flow where you can see a brief shower. for saturday and sunday, sunshine returns, very pleasant weather for the weekend. temperatures generally in the

mid-60s all weekend long. paula continues the weekend through cuba. saturday it'll just be a remnant low pressure. winds are down to about 45, 50 miles per hour. heading out to the east at 14. we did have heavy rain in western cuba and the extreme southern keys that's all beginning to move awful to the east. another disturbed weather. this could redevelop into something the next week or so. west winds 20 to 25 knots. and the small craft advisory through the day and into tomorrow. partly cloudy, breezy 44 by morning, so chilly morning. and then tomorrow partly sunny and windy, maybe a quick afternoon shower, low to mid- 60s tomorrow. on the weekend lots of sunshine. 63, 68, 65 and 68 a lot of sunshine. looks like a really nice fall period coming up. denise. >> thank you, bob. check in tomorrow morning
