from the hospital late last night in what continues to be a picture perfect rescue. for more than two months, we witnessed a scene of harmony among them. there are reports from deep underground that there were uglier moments we did not see. according to a freelance journalist, the first 17 days before they were discovered was extremely intense. there was fighting among them that came to blows. even feelings of despair. evenaa fear of cannibolism. that is all in the past as they continue to celebrate their freedom. the only bolivian of the 33 had worked in the mine five days before the collapse. he said to the crowd, i'm very thankful and long live chile.

he was welcomed home still wearing sun glasses to protect his eyes. but already getting a glimpse of the spotlight. after worrying about their rescue for up to 70 days, day 71 brought the chance for recovery. relatives of the youngest trapped videotaped their reunion for cbs news. the 19-year-old told the camera he is doing well, but doctors worried he seemed withdrawn. his uncle had been dreaming of this day. >> most of the miners appear healthy, but doctors are thinking about the longer term psychological effects of being in the mine. do you worry about jimmy? >> translator: of course, i think with all of the support from his family, he will be fine. >> reporter: it appears the men from the mining community in northern chill e is starting to change -- chile is starting to

change. seth doan, cbs news. >> the men plan to hire an accountant and share all of the moneys from books or movies. 38-year-old david craig was killed in anne arundel county. craig was in a new wing when the building collapsed. the accident is under investigation. a 6-month-old baby is murdered. weijia jiang is in the newsroom with the latest on the story. >> reporter: timothy lewis is behind bars charged with killing his 6-month-old daughter. lewis confessed to choking the child. he called 911 from the home in northeast baltimore wednesday night saying he found the baby any the crib not breathing. -- baby in the crib not

breathing. the medical examiner say the old wounds do not contribute to her death. lewis is charged with first- degree murder. >> thank you. we will have more from police and neighbors coming up at 5:00 in a live report. no new contracts. city school teachers turned out in record numbers to vote on a new proposal to change the way they are paid. they rejected it. in the school watch record, we explain what happens now. >> reporter: the baltimore teachers union negotiated for eight months on the contract. now it is back to the negotiating table. after a two day vote school teachers say nothing will change in the contracts. thousands of the teachers voted. >> i'm voting against it because i feel i did not receive enough information about the new contract. >> it is a great way to show

respect for the teachers. it is a smart way to do it. it is not blindly throwing money away. >> reporter: it will do away with the way the teachers receive current raises. the better a teacher and student performed, the more money they received. the school superintendent supported the idea. >> our teachers should not be thought of as missionaries. they are professionals. we wanted to make sure she got compensated as professionals. >> reporter: education experts nationwide watched how teachers would respond because the new contracts would not give them more say in how the schools are operating. >> the schools have unique challenges. we need to make sure that is a large -- that there are a

hospital's policy of automatically testing women who come in. >> a skilled medical review officer can tell the difference between street drug use and poppyseed use. >> reporter: she got her daughter back after getting an immediate drug test which was negative and going to court. she told her story at an aclu event. >> i understand that they were doing what they had to do, but they should have investigated it more. i had to drive by that place every day when i go to work. i cry half the time. >> the hospital says it is now comparing its drug testing procedures to other hospitals to make sure mistakes don't happen in the future. the news to end the week on wall street. the dow is down, but the other indexes were up. the dow was down 32.

the s&p up 2. let's go to new york for the stock watch update. >> federal reserve chairman ben bernanke says the central bank will take steps to jump start the economy. bernancke said the fed is planning to buy up treasury bonds to keep the interest rates low. during the recession, the fed brought up $1.7 trillion of mortgage securities and bonds. the new program is likely to be much smaller. americans have been spending more money on cars and furniture and hardware stores. it lifted retail sales for the third straight month .60%. consumer confidence fell in october. persistently high unemployment has people pessimistic about

all right. tim said yesterday we will get winds and they are coming in. will they get stronger than this? >> they leveled off at the strongest at this point. what we have been dealing with is not horribly destructive winds. that is a good thing. all of the rain we had over the last few months and a bit of rain yesterday at bwi. you don't need much wind to start knocking trees over. that wind is up in the 20-mile- an-hour range today. that is where we will be. look at first warning doppler weather radar. i'll give you the culprit. the nor'easter. in definition more than in character. in definition, it did everything that a nor'easter did. it came across the coastline and moved up and created winds from the northeast. it did not give us torrential rain for any long period of time. it did not give us destructive

wind. it has made its impact. with the rotation around this low pressure system up to the top of the screen, we are seeing the moisture streaming from the great lakes. that is why we have clouds out their right now. besides that, we would have clear skies for the rest of the evening. when that disturbance is moving to the south, we are looking at a nice week. the conditions will be gorgeous. we have temperatures at 60 degrees. still below average at 67. relative humidity at 43%. winds from the west at 15 miles an hour. 29.65 is the barometer. temperatures close to the northwest flow around that high. cooler as you would see in oakland. 55 degrees in cumberland. 41 in oakland. 64 in washington d.c. south and east of the metro area, you are seeing temperatures leveling out milder near the water and farther away from the northwest influence. winds are still in the double

jet skiing on the texas-mexican border. you have two american tourists who stumbled into a bad area and pursued when the shooting occurred. the tragic event could have been set in motion by the mexican license plates on hartley's truck. on thursday, the security expert told the early show how the plates could have given the pirates the wrong idea. >> they were identified by the spotters. these are individuals that are posted as lookouts to keep an eye out for undercover agents from u.s. law enforcement or mexican law enforcement. i think a set of dominoes started to fall when they went on the water. >> reporter: neither hartley's body nor his jet ski has been found. thursday, mexican authorities suspended their search. we are looking into new strategies. up until now we have not been

by an employee over an unpaid tab. the officers only arrested the homeless man for credit card abuse. dallas police say the employee could still face charges. he is still in jail and suffering suffering severe bruises. opening statements today in the pennsylvania woman accused of masterminding a bank robbery plot. >> reporter: opening statements started this afternoon for 61- year-old margie armstrong. she is accused of masterminding a bank robbery where she forced a pizza delivery man to rob the bank while wire a bomb collar. armstrong hatched the plot to get money to pay someone to kill her father. her attorney says he expects his client to testify during week three of the trial along with her psychiatrist. back to you. >> thank you. she maintains she was framed

for the plot. a washington woman is facing charges for stabbing another woman in an anger management class. the suspect was complaining about the video shown in class. when the victim told her to give the class a chance, the woman lunged at her and stabbed her for times with a knife. she says security changes need to be made so this doesn't happen again. three people are injured after a news truck collides with a truck in florida. the truck was carrying three and flipped on its side after colliding with the truck. so far, there is no word on what caused the collision. a station in iowa covers breaking news on their door step. police got a call from kcci at the start of the overnight shift. employees told the operator that the man in the parking lot was shooting at them. the police arrived finding the suspect. he shot a station photographer
