two pistols. also a recording from a radical cleric, an war almalacky. gruesome animal abuse, charges leveled against a west baltimore man. derek valcourt has a rundown of the charges for us. the allegations are not pretty. police suspect a third dog may have been in this. police were called to the home by concerned neighbors. according to complaints, coleman told officers that when his pit bull first started attacking, he tried to stop them with boiling water. when that didn't work, he used a 2-by-four, when that didn't work, he pulled out his

shotgun. police are also investigating another dog they describe as clearly emaciated. >> that pit bull did not survive its wound. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. and coleman is facing 11 different counts of animal cruelty. is. jessica cart altia joins us with more. >> it was a joint operation. these two men were arrested. take a look. police found more than 400 starter plants. and they were growing partner inside two homes in south baltimore. the men told police they were worried about getting got. the two homes have been converted entirely into an

indoor marijuana farm. each man faces a number of charges. a mont montgomery county man is charged with drunk driving. police say 49-year-old phillip vu of silver spring ran a red light and struck the side of officer kirk brown's cruiser. some say it's just as dangerous as driving under the influence. texting while driving. more than 5,000 people are killed every year in distracted driving accidents. andrea fujii explains, a maryland couple wants to change that in their daughter's memory. january 2008, in orlando, florida, when heather herd was killed. she was on her way to meet with her wedding planner. a tractor-trailer was texting while driving his car. >> how could somebody take

a lot of dry weather to the west. and that's leading to sunshine. we are up to 62 degrees already this afternoon. we'll have your forecast when we come back. mary? >> all right, bern. thank you. let's check in on our roads now. here's sharon gibala. they are busy pretty early this afternoon. a bunch of accidents to talk about. on 95 northbound. just past route 100. speed sensors in that area. 42 miles an hour, the slowest spot. watch for an accident also in fallston road at whittaker road. another at stater hill. on southbound 24 at 95, there is an accident there. and another right nearby in joppa on 152 at 95. in the city, pedestrians struck at north conkling. another struck. and ellicott city, watch for a crash there at bethany lane at baltimore national pike. taking a look at speeds on the beltway, in the 40s and 50s. not so bad on the beltway. but we can take a look on the delay at 70.

but other commodities are also rallying. since commodities are priced in dollars, a weaker dollar means foreign buyers get more of a bargain. chevron is buying the natural gas producer, atlas energy. it's a deal worth $4.3 billion. the buyout gives chevron its first move into the rich gas fields into the eastern u.s. the economic outlook for most americans is improving, but not enough to give the all- important holiday shopping season a boost. a new report shows people's stress levels about money are down from september and significantly lower than a year ago. but the survey also finds that fewer people plan to shop for the next 30 days, which could mean a slow start to the holiday shopping season. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. she has been a wheel of fortune fanatic her whole life. but nobody could have seen this coming.

tow boats are headed out to bring them to land. none of the passengers or crewmembers on board were injured. not expected to reach port until wednesday night. once passengers are dropped off, the splendor will be towed back to long beach, california. and that will take several days. a mystery missile. even the pentagon doesn't know who sent it into the sky. marcelo lee has more from california. >> in a spectacular. it takes people's breath away. >> reporter: launched this missile and why, remain a mystery now. >> it was around sunset. the location of the missile, west of l.a., north of catalina island, and approximately 35 miles out to see. >> a navy spokesman says it wasn't their missile. there was no navy activity in

that region. >> reporter: on friday night, they launched this delta 2 rocket. but a sergeant at the base tells news 8, there have been no launches since then. >> it's not a tomahawk. >> reporter: he said we should wait for definitive answers to come from the military. but when we asked him what he thought it could be -- >> i'm just speculating. >> reporter: he said maybe, just may be, with president obama in asia, this could have been a show of our military missile. >> it could have been a test firing from an intercontinental ballistic missile, from a submarine, underwater submarine, to demonstrate mainly to asia that we can do that. >> they said it was done to demonstrate power between the soviet union and the cold war.

making life a little more turbulent for people on the water in spain. strong winds are creating monster waves. officials say some of the waves are topping 60 feet high. no waves are reported, however. two were killed in an explosion in a small mine in the chilean desert. one was hospitalized. another four more were injured. they spent more than two months buried in a tunnel. parents of text-happy teenagers may want to look out for more serious troubled behavior. >> reporter: researchers say teens who text more than 120 times a day are more likely to have sex and abuse drugs and alcohol. researchers are not saying that hypertexting links to that behavior, but allows teens to

be heavily influenced by that behavior. studies also found that teens who text that much are more likely to have permissive or absent parents. they are more likely to be girls coming from single-parent households. >> i think they also have trouble with their thumbs sometimes. >> it followed more than 422 students at public high schools in the cleveland area last year. thea dry crop. alex demetrick reports, that could mean low-interest loans for some farmers, but not most. >> reporter: this past summer, early corn burned in the field of much of maryland. >> corn took the hardest hit. heat is bad, and dry weather is bad. and when you have heat and dry weather, it's sort of like a double whammy. >> reporter: producing smaller yields. the tipping point is -- >> 30% crop loss of your county-

road. and a few in the city. two other accidents west belvedere and west parkway. and cathedral. that just upon. meantime, we have some delays on the beltway. 29 miles per hour is going to be your slowest spot. a 21-minute drive time. 35 miles per hour is your average. w a 17-minute drive time there. taking a live look outside. that is your delay on 70 westbound. it runs from approaching 29 to marriottsville road. you can see we're looking at pretty significant delays. that accident is clear on 95 north north of 100. >> try any new breakfast sandwiches. get a freshly brewed cup of seattle's best coffee, too. the maryland food bank

that blast. two others were tain to the hospital in serious condition. debris scattered throughout the neighborhood. investigators say the explosion appears to have been caused by natural gas. fire officials in texas are checking to see if a fire that burned several buildings to the ground at a west style theme park was deliberately set. it happened in wilmer, texas. six buildings were destroyed, including the general store in the 1800-style town. the park closed about a decade ago, but has been used as a set for movies and tv shows. more revelations into the federal investigation into the worst oil spill in u.s. history. jessica kartalija has more. >> reporter: investigators say the bottom line is the seemingly acceptable risks added up to the disaster. investigators outlined more than a dozen decisions that at the time were explainable. but all of the events came together at the worst time, causing the well blowout and millions of gallons of oil to

spill into the gulf. critics say bp is getting a free pass for its history of cost-cutting. >> 11 workers were killed when the rig exploded back in april. chilling revelations in the elizabeth smart trial. on the stand today, smart said her accused kidnapper, david barzee, wanted to kidnap her cousin and make her another bride. she is being stoic on the stand, testifying against the man who held her, raped her and held her prisoner for months. >> reporter: 23-year-old elizabeth smart told the story as she awoke to a man with a knife to her throat and a man threatening to kill her and her family it f she didn't leave with him. in chilling testimony, she said, i could feel something cold across my neck. i thought i was having a nightmare. it is just an indescribable fear. >> reporter: smart was

kidnapped when her utah home when she was 14. she was spotted with him nine months later, walking down a street in salt lake city. smart says how he took her to a campsite with his wife. she ordered her to take off her clothes and put on a robe. then he performed a ceremony, where he took her as his second wife. smart testified, he proceeded to fight me to the ground and forced the robes up, where he raped me. >> reporter: mitchell's lawyers don't deny what happened. they argue that his mental illness and extreme religious beliefs led him to believe that god told him to do it. >> reporter: elizabeth's mother testified earlier, that the family first met a clean-shaven mitchell in 2001. she said he appeared to be down on his luck. so they hired him to do work around the house. if convicted, mitchell could spend thest rest of -- the rest of his life in federal prison. >> reporter: mitchell again started singing hymns in court

before opening statements began. the judge removed him and ordered him to view the proceedings from a holding cell. a minor fender bender from boston takes a turn. police say drivers were taken to the side of the road. traffic backed up quickly. and a 54-year-old man in a honda didn't like the delay. after a shouting match, witnesses say he got out of his car, went over and began punching one of the drivers. that's when the man went over and stabbed the man who was punching him. the 54-year-old victim began suffering minor injuries. a fire has caused millions of dollars in damage, to a warehouse, belonging to musician neil young. despite the damage, a lot of the belongs in the building were able to be saved. no one was injured in the fire. it's official. tv announcer nancy o'dell will

shore, only to stumble across a 40-foot chunk of a ship wreck. that recently happened along the sleeping bear dunes of lake michigan. the park believes the wreck washed ashore, a couple of weeks ago, during a major windstorm. experts think this is likely the ship wreck of a fairly large boat. they are working now to identify it. a major achievement for scientists in switzerland. they say they have actually recreated the big bang on a smaller scale. they have used an ion collider. to recreate what happened in the moments just after the big bang. they plan to use mini bangs. to study the origin of matter. surely, we can find a more deggified way of describing the mini bang. you have your mini bang, big bang. >> looks and feels like autumn outside. >> bob turk has the updated

here's a look outside. another beautiful sunset. coming too early. but it's still beautiful. >> an hour earlier than it was last week. >> see? i like the morning light. at least it was sunny all day long. and it's been very, very dry, very pleasant. beautiful day this afternoon. sunshine, wall to wall. looks like this same weather pattern is going to continue into the weekend. and it's going to get even warmer. we've got up to 63 today. by the weekend, we might even be in the mid-60s. right now, take a look at temperatures, just really, really pleasant out there. we're at 61 last report. however, as soon as the sun sets, boom, it drops like a rock. humidity at 47%. still got a bit of a breeze, although not as strong as yesterday. north/northwest wind at 12. barometer on the way back up. 29.92 inches.

as that deep area of pressure east of new england continues to move away. 57, elkton and easton. and d.c., still at 63. coolest spot, oakland at 52. and cumberland coming in also at 63 down in the valley. beautiful weather for this time of year. really, you cannot top this. i'll be honest with you. still got a bit of a breeze. anywhere from 7 to 12 miles an hour. and temperatures again, back in the upper 30s to low 40s, which is very close to normal this time of year, which is about 36. if you want winter weather, get out to colorado. portions of northern utah area. eastern idaho. portions of wyoming, montana. just enough cold air. some areas getting one to three, maybe as much as four, five, six inches of snow. the rest of the country, just beautiful. and this is not going to impact our weather at all. in fact, because this storm is right here, it's going to bring up weather ahead of it. during the east. that is the only place that has

clouds. we've got beautiful. high pressure continues to dominate. tonight, wednesday, thursday, into the weekend. this high moves off the coast. that means the winds go back to the south and southwest, even milder conditions expected. just really nice stretch of weather. northwest winds on the bay, 10 to 15 knots. and they do have a small craft advisory. through the morning tomorrow, for the winds. bay temp now, down a little bit to 55 degrees. sunrise in the morning. at least the kids can get on the bus with a little light breeze. 6:44. and it sets. just sets. 4:57. tonight, generally clear. beautiful night. down around 40. and that is still a little above normal. tomorrow, sunshine all day long. pleasant -- yeah. 62 today. it was 63. we're talking about an identical sort of afternoon that we had today. these temperatures are running about 3 or 4 degrees above normal, which is now 59. tomorrow, drops to 58. by the weekend, it drops to 57.
