deadly consequences, a young maryland woman dies in a horrific car crash. tonight friends and family are pointing the finger at the drink called four loko. good evening i'm vic carter. >> and i'm denise koch. here is what people are talking about. >> four loko, it's a caffeine drink packed with alcohol.

concern is growing over the drink's safety. kelly mcpherson has the story. >> reporter: the fda is already looking into the drink. this vigil is about more than the loss of 21-year-old courtney spurrey who died after she drive her pickup truck into a pole after drinking four loko. >> she changed that night. she could not remember people's names. she blacked out after 30 minutes of having the alcoholic drink. >> britney. she was a little peanut. you can imagine drinking a

couple of these drinks. all of a sudden she has no ability to control herself. >> reporter: that's the community's new mission. it's already happened in michigan and washington state where nine college students nearly died at a house party. >> every one of them that were hospitalized had drank four loko. >> one near by store is being proactive. >> this community is family oriented, if it saves our community it's coming off our shelves. >> you have a lot of energy, you feel like you can do anything. >> reporter: that girl tells me she had one of the four loko's that night but she felt okay. none of them will ever -- four lokos that night but she felt okay. all say they will not drink another one again. reporting live from the eastern shore, kelly mcpherson, wjz

eyewitness news. >> thank you, kelly. the makers of four loko say the content is no more than a cup of coffee. they stand by their product. >> drug smugglers find a new way to fight smuggling inside the buttons of a dress. a package was intercepted. hidden inside each button agents found a powdery substance that is your -- substance that turned out to be $50,000 worth of heroin. baltimore city police police officers shout no to the mayor's new contract. 90% of the men and women in blue rejected the new contract. the mayor's proposal was intended to narrow the city's gap but it implies the lack of success toward the officers. >> the officers know these are tough times economically for the city and everyone else.

but these are men and women who are expected to go out there and take a bullet. >> tonight the mayor issue add written statement saying she is confident both sides can reach an agreement. tonight the mayor is a victim to baltimore city crime. the mayor's husband kent parked his car outside their north baltimore home last night. at some point bandits snatched a satellite system. the car was out of their sight. police say there was no signs of forced entry. the radio was worth several $100. mike hellgren reports leopold says the lawyer doesn't have the facts to back them up. anne arundel county executive john leopold faces nasty allegations. among them he's addicted to women, he fondled a woman in

his office, called another a pig. that he ordered police to run down license plates of women he found attractive. john singleton was the lawyer who filed that complaint. now he's the subject of this motion for sanctions, the county attorney filed it saying the claims singleton is making are lies and he doesn't have the witnesses to back them up. >> every single fact in this complaint e believe can be verified by witnesses. singleton says the complaint is good old fashion bullying. >> this is certainly not going to be the end of it. with all due respect, i'm not going to back down. >> reporter: the county's attorneys and representatives for mr. leopold did not return comments to the allegations. carla hamner described one of the accounts that led her to

file it. >> he physically grabbed me from the arm. yelled i want you to turn and face me like this, get your hair out of your face. >> reporter: the county wants a federal judge to hit her lawyer mr. singleton in his pocketbook with fines in return. singleton has to respond with sanctions by next week. mike hellgren. >> the lawsuit against the county executive seeks $10 million in damages including a $5 million fund to compensate any employee found to be victimized. an ecolight scare in a orchard sparks a lawsuit from one of the victims. the farm recalled apple cider last month after seven people got sick. 21-year-old nicholas fickle was one of them and now he is suing. health workers are still testing the cider to confirm the e.coli. hundreds of maryland children could be facing health

problems and not even know it. kai jackson explains why local children are being urged to get tested for heart disease. >> reporter: hard disease is a growing problem in young people. doctors are sounding the alarm on heart disease in young people. a condition that many associate with adults and seniors is rearing it's ugly head in teenagers. >> we've seen over 1,600 young athletes and even in this healthy crowd we found a lot of them having obesity and high blood pressure. >> reporter: the numbers tell the story. obesity is a risk factor for heart disease. the maryland department of health and mental hygiene say 15% of children have hard disease. >> we're testing for

cholesterol and glucose which would indicate diabetes. but we're also doing a very thorough questionnaire. a high fat diet, lack of exercise and other lifestyle choices are the reasons for heart disease in young people. >> i just walk for heart disease with my family, my sister and my boyfriend. we walked for my cousin because she died from a heart attack. >> reporter: the screenings at poly high are expected to take five to six minutes per person, back to you. >> john hopkins held a similar screening for athletes last year. back on dry land. a stranded cruise ship docked today. >> reporter: it took hours for all the passengers to disembark. after four days adrift, they were glad to be back on dry land. >> it was an adventure. >> an experience. >> the people did the best they could with it. >> reporter: the ship was towed into port thursday morning.

there had been no lights, no air-conditioning, no cooked foods since monday. >> anything hot at this point we would love. anything hot. hot shower, hot food, hot anything. >> reporter: and the worse part -- >> no bathrooms for 18 hours. >> toilets weren't running. >> no toilets. >> reporter: the trouble began early monday when passengers awoke to smoke and a lot of noise. >> reporter: they said a lot of smoke but no fire. >> reporter: passengers were never in any danger says carnival. but it still doesn't know what caused the fire in an engine room. >> we've been in business for 35 years and we've never had a situation like this where it had a ship dead in the water for these many days. >> reporter: the company is giving the passengers a full refund and a free cruise, but the question is if any of these

lawmakers face an increase in gas prices. >> reporter: you pay the price at the pump, including gas. >> we probably need taxes but i really don't want to pay too much more fun gas, that would be bad. at a time when drivers are deciding how much gas they can afford to put in the car. legislative analysts are delivering the three little words no one wants to hear, demands exceed resources. in other words, you are short $1.6 billion. that has senator mike miller looking at bumping up the gas tax. >> it is never popular. >> reporter: neither is standing still but without money for road and highways improvements, traffic could be worse than it already is. >> in the baltimore metropolitan region, it's the second longest commute time in the united states that is out of new york. in the washington metropolitan region, we have the most congested space outside of los angeles. it's not so much an economic issue as it is a quality of life issue which means getting

missouri into portions of oklahoma. a little snow across northern colorado. a little bit of snow fell in denver. but here in the east, for the first time all the way to florida that cloud band just quiet, big area of high pressure governing our weather. high pressure down to the south, slowly but surely is going to move off the coast and it'll start to get the winds back to the west southwest. keeping us in mild weather all weekend long. looks like we won't see any rain here or everyone even a chance of rain until perhaps tuesday afternoon as low pressure way down by the gulf looks like it'll head up to our region by tuesday. north winds, five to 10 knots. the bay temps around 54. clear and cold, frosty, some spots 29. downtown probably 44. 63, beautiful sunny day
