handcuffed. one of the most powerful politicians in maryland are arrested during a federal raid. >> the charges jack johnson is now facing. hi. i'm kai jackson. >> i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. this afternoon, federal agents arrest prince george's county executive and his wife. alex demetrick is at the federal courthouse, with this developing investigation. jack johnson and his wife are due to appear in federal court, just about within 30 minutes from now. and we should know what exactly it is they are being charged with. johnson and his wifeleslie were taken into custody earlier today. there are unconfirmed reports. and i must stress, they are unconfirmed at this time.

that johnson has been the target of a federal investigation for two years. but what the focus is unknown at this hour. johnson may have allegedly been in the process of destroying documents. reports say a toilet was being used to flush away something that investigators wanted to seize. jack johnson is in his final year in the council. his wife was just elected to the council this month. i'll have a lot more to tell you later on. back to you, kai. >> breaking story. alex demetrick, thank you. we'll have much more at 5:00 and 6:00. a shooting victim dies while trying to find help in baltimore county. now, police make an arrest in his murder. vic is in the newsroom with details on this for us. >> reporter: the 30-year-old victim was shot several times in randallstown. nain-year-old keon cunningham is now charged with has murder. police found him in the 5400 block.

neighbors say he rang a doorbell for help but it was too late. cunningham is being held at the baltimore detention center with no bail. >> no word yet on the motive for the murder. a 21-year-old girl dies, her family says it is all because of a dangerous drink. there are new calls to ban four loko in maryland. >> reporter: the benge is called four loco -- beverage is called four loko. it's been banned in several states, but its maker does not believe it is dangerous. >> reporter: these are the pictures of the car. courtney drank two cans of the controversial energy drink, four loko, which also contains alcohol. according to them, she went out of control. they believe a combination of a high and a low caused her to fly into a rage. she took the teens to someone

else's car that night. >> we have a website. it is called www.banfourloko.com. >> she changed that night. she could not remember people's names. she blacked out within 30 minutes of having the alcoholic beverage. >> reporter: four loko has already been pulled from several states, but not maryland. however, the attorney general has banned similar drinks, telling wjz, thesasmed- -- these amped-up pops are popular energy drinks. in washington state, four loko was pulled from shelves after four college students got sick at a party. >> now we have incident after incident of people getting the drink and drinking to the point of it being extremely dangerous. >> reporter: courtney was thrown 90 feet. her uncle...

>> we feel that the kids just do not know what they're drinking, what they're consuming. >> reporter: four loko said in a statement that its beverage should be -- taken responsibly. that its alcohol content is stated plainly on the label. >> experts say four loko has the caffeine of four sodas and alcohol content of four beers. tonight, everyone is safe, thanks to one man's quick thinking. jessica kartalija is live in the newsroom with more. >> reporter: the bus was carrying 30 vietnam veterans who reunited in washington, d.c. for veterans day ceremonies. the bus caught fire at the 14th street bridge. witnesses say the flames shot 40 feet into the air. a vietnam vet on board first noticed the smoke and got everyone out just in time.

>> and everybody evacuated from the bus. as we got off the bus, the flames started shooting out of the back of the bus. >> a lot of quick thinking. being a vietnam vet, on veterans day, he saved like 40 other people. it's incredible. >> amazing. luckily, no one was injured in that fire. >> what a great story, jessica, thank you. the cause of the fire remains under investigation tonight. a string ever investigations under way now after the fire that crippled a carnival cruise ship. passengers now sharing their stories on the nightmare voyage. >> reporter: it was early monday morning when the smell of smoke awoke many passengers. chris harland had his camera going, as thick, black smoke rose near the stern. >> there's a fire. where does that smoke come from? >> reporter: the passengers were told that in spite of the smoke, there was no fire. >> no fire. no fire. just lots of smoke.

>> everybody is saying, okay, no smoke, but no fire, huh? >> they tried to calm everybody down by saying it was a flameless fire. >> did anybody believe that? it's a flameless fire? >> no, not at all. [ laughter ] >> reporter: soon there was no denying the fire or the extent of damage. the ship lost power, leaving passengers with little to do. >> we were bored. it wasn't very sunny. so we couldn't even lay out and get tan. >> and there were no fancy meals. >> we started eating peanut butter, which everyone was excited about. we love peanut butter. >> we didn't even know how much we loved peanut butter. >> many were on board, celebrating special days like an versaries and -- anniversaries and birthdays. >> we'll have a honeymoon experience. >> what's the first thing you want, in terms of food or shower? >> i want a hot shower. >> reporter: as they headed to

san diego, they had little idea what a big story their ill- fated cruise had become. finally, on solid ground, they were greeted by a hoard of cameras and reporters, as well as family can -- and friends. >> reporter: the carnival splendor is being towed to a dry dock for inspection. it may be november. but the colder weather isn't here yet. it's dry and sunny, with comfortable temperatures in the 60s. wjz has weather and traffic together. meteorologist tim williams is here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. >> well, mary, delightful afternoon. not one we could say is in the record books by any stretch of the imagination. but we're definitely approaching some levels we don't see here in this often. take a look at first doppler radar. high pressure in control at the eastern sea board. the dew point and humidity are at 12. 12 degrees. and relative humidity at 12%. 12% is almost unheard of here. bob turk and i were talking about arizona levels, so dry, where you hardly feel any moisture levels at all.

65 degrees is above the normal high. and the only thing we have really to talk about is this advisory in effect. a coastal flood advisory. because we have winds blowing on shore, they could be one or two feet higher than average at times. and as soon as winds shift around, those levels will drop. but that is only a minor concern. nothing major on the coast. we'll talk about how long the stretch continues in just a few moments. let's check on the roads with sharon gibala at wjz traffic control. well, another day despite the beautiful weather out there. we have a bunch of accidents, including one on 295 now. that's in the northbound lanes, approaching 895, blocking two right lanes. watch for delays there. that one just happened. second accident on the outer loop, perring parkway, delays behind that one. wreck on 40 eastbound on winters lane. another in reisterstown. cherry valley road. a vehicle into a building there at reisterstown road in cherry valley. in bel air, a crash on route 32.

last seconds of their thursday night game. sports director mark viviano has reaction from the team and from the fans. >> reporter: well, mary, the ravens and their fans experienced the full range of emotion in the span of a minute on the game clock. the thrill of what appeared to be victory. then the agony of actual defeat. itthe thrill is lost when the result is defeat. >> wide open. >> reporter: the falcons rolled over the ravens in the first half. this missed tackle on atlanta's first touchdown, a sign of tough times. joe flacco was frustrated most of the first half. ravens fell behind, 13-0. before a second half rally that included three ravens' touchdowns. flacco found todd heap in the end zone to give the ravens their first lead, 21-20, with about a minute to play. but the 40 seconds that followed felt like an eternity to the ravens as atlanta qb mark ryan marched his 40 yards

a texas father wanted by police. detectives say he crashed his suv, then ran away, and left his injured children behind. the accident happened in a dallas neighborhood. police say the man slammed into a telephone pole, grabbed a 1- year-old girl from the vehicle, then left the three other kids at the scene. two. them were seriously injured. well, some dramatic video from suburban columbus, ohio, where a purse snatcher takes off with more than just a purse. take a look at the video. the victim was walking through a parking lot in a wal-mart, when an suv pulls up. the man inside takes the purse and ended up dragging the woman. she ended up suffering a broken shoulder. surprising new research finds that vaccinations may mod be the best way to keep whooping cough from spreading. sandra hughes breaks down the new study for wjz.

>> reporter: it's called whooping cough, because of this. the long cough. and then the whoop that follows. health officials are urging everyone to get vaccinated against the disease, especially older adults. but a new study is questioning that strategy. >> blanket vaccination campaigns may not be very effective. >> reporter: mathematicians at the university of michigan analyzed data from europe to figure out how whooping cough spreads. they found that kids are much more likely to catch the illness from another child, not an adult. >> although we've known for a long time that kids have contact with other kids, we didn't really realize how intense that contact is. >> reporter: so far this year, health officials in california have dealt with almost 6500 cases of whooping cough. and 10 infant deaths. >> reporter: children under a year old cannot be vaccinated. and they're most susceptible to whooping cough. and of the young children who

can be vaccinated, 10% of parents don't do it. >> if you get parents to vax night their young kid -- vaccinate their young kids at a young age, we can control this. >> reporter: research is focusing on making sure all children get the shot. >> whooping cough usually lasts about six weeks. a weak week on wall street. investors were once again in a selling mood. here's a look at the closing numbers. dow was down 91. s&p off 14. nasdaq down 37. let's go to new york right now, where alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. consumer confidence rose this month for the first time since august. a slight gain in jobs and wages are starting to lift americans' spirits. but that did little to lift spirits on wall street. traders are worried about the

cooling down the economy. that could be bad news for the u.s., which exports many products products to china. noir northrup grumman will cut 380 jobs or 2% of its work force. the company which builds submarines and aircraft carriers for the navy, says the cuts are necessary to improve efficiency and costs. northrup grumman employs 120,000 people worldwide. 70-year-old newsweek magazine and 2-year-old website the daily beast, have reached an agreement to merge. tina brown, who was chief editor, will do the same job at both newsweek and the daily beak, which she cofounded. the maker of budweiser beer is crying foul with major league baseball. anheuser-busch is suing mlb, saying they reneged on their contract. mlb decided it was not binding, allowing it to offer spots to competitors.

moving in our direction. nothing is really progressing. and that's why we're locked under this dome of high pressure that has been dif giving -- has been giving us the indian summer. right now, we're looking at 65 degrees. our temperature at bwi marshall. dew point has gone up. 13. wow. that's really, really humid. 13 is the dew point. relative humidity at 13%. we don't see these levels very often. and we'll enjoy them. north wind at 3 miles per hour. 30.34 and rising is your barometer reading. 55 in oakland. 61 in elkton. 62 in the nation's capital. and 58 in pax river and ocean city, at 55, where the winds are coming in at 10 miles per hour. the winds have been somewhat fluctuating between a northeasterly flow, blowing from the northeast. and a flow right on down from the north. and as a result of that, we do have a coastal flood advisory in effect for all of the shores really along the bay, through

midnight. just because the flow has been pushing up along the banks. maybe 1 to 2 feet above average height, could cause some low- level flooding. but that will be for a very short time. what we're watching, though, is this next storm system. monday into tuesday. we'll start to see the clouds increase. tuesday into wednesday, a better chance of rain. this system has mixed precipitation up toward iowa and back toward the dakotas, where snow has been falling. the high pressure is definitely going to stay in control. with that, the mild sare stays -- air stays with us. and we will drop in our temperatures. but we still stay very close to the normal. which will be in the upper 50s. we don't -- cooler only means that we go back to where we typically would be this time of year. your sunset today is 4:54. northeast wind on the bay. next high tide at fort mchenry. 11:28 tonight. skies will be clear.

it is 4:30. sunny, 65 degrees. hello, thanks for staying with eyewitness news. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about. >> we want to update the breaking news that wjz has been following all afternoon. one of maryland's most powerful politician. mary is following the story. >> prince george's county executive, jeff johnson and his wife are expected in court any second now. this is new video showing johnson, rather, being taken into custody outside his mitchellville home. it's not exactly clear what the charges are. those are expected to be unsealed in court any minute now. johnson, who is 61 years old, has served as prince george's county executive since 2002. his term is up in just weeks. his wife was just elected to the county council. wjz has learned that federal

agents raided a total of 13 location as part of their investigation into johnson. back to you, denise. >> all right. thank you, mary. >> wjz is in court for johnson's appearance. a live update coming up all new at 5:00. a scare in the sky again. this time, it's a flight from philadelphia to pittsburgh. wjz is live. jessica kartalija with more on what happened. and the similarities similarities to another near disaster. it's incredible, vic. tonight, all 150 passengers say they are incredibly relieved to have landed on solid ground. grrr. >> that's how passengers on the flight described the noise they heard just after taking off from philadelphia international airport, thursday afternoon. >> i was thinking, maybe i was going to die. >> so we got like five minutes in the air. and there was a loud noise.

and then we were told that we were going to turn around and come back. >> does seem pretty routine. in fact, he told us everything was fine, precautionary. he was going to circle back around. >> reporter: u.s. airways spokesman derek hannah said that they decided to turn around because a bird may have hit the airplane. it was the same model of plane involved in the miracle on the hudson bird strike incident. >> we're glad he did a sully. it was pretty terrific. but there was no panic. there was -- by the pilots or the crew. they just did a beautiful job. >> reporter: the five crewmembers and 140 passengers were flown on a different aircraft and landed safely at pittsburgh international around 7:00 in the evening. >> i'm glad. i've been awake since 3:00 a.m. san diego time. so i'm glad it's over want. >> reporter: and no one was injured aboard that flight. they all landed in pittsburgh just a few hours later than scheduled. vic? >> one person suffered two

broken legs, but there were no reports of injuries when the american airlines plane landed on the hudson river. a man is jumped in ann anne arundel county. and the suspects take off in his car. it happened early yesterday morning in brooklyn park. police were called to west meadow road, where the victim said two young men attacked him and stole his wallet and keys. they were last seen fleeing the scene. headed towards baltimore city. new twists in the desperate search for a missing ohio woman, her children and a family friend. kai is in the newsroom with the latest on the investigation. kai? >> 32-year-old tina harmon's boyfriend reported her missing wednesday. as police in howard, ohio, began their investigation. they also found the two children and a close friend were also missing. herman's truck was found late yesterday on the campus of herman college. a coworker said she found blood inside herman's house. police have been in contact with herman's ex-husband. but police say at this point,

he's not a suspect. >> howard is a small town, 50 miles northeast of columbus. a new twist in several scandals around the word. -- world. >> a double agent blew the whistle on those sleeper agents. >> hannah chapman didn't so much come in from the cold when her spy cover was blown. using her new celebrity status to open a moscow boutique this week, she seems to have come into the cold. chapman, who picked up her english name, when she picked up her english husband, has long become the story that spread last summer. she was one of 10 long-term sleeper spies, living apparently long upon terms -- long terms in the u.s., when they were expoised in an -- expose the in an airport scene. but none of the spies was

exposed like anna chapman has been exposed. her femme fatale form has been on the cover of a popular russian men's magazine. others go back to espionage. the russians are reported to be scouring the world for a mysterious colonel sherbicov. the head of secret intelligence. who fled to the u.s. just as russian president med ye -- med yevev was expected to go. to kill the russian. russian sources say they are sent to find the traitor, serbicov. anna chapman isn't the only one keeping this spy story in view.

russia's intelligence is demanding that they get their act together. be on the lookout. the d.c. metro system wants information about two men acting suspiciously. according to an internal memo, they were spotted at the station, trying to videotape the station inconspicuously by holding the camera at their side. another rider who took the picture of the men riding the train. sarah palin's e-mail hacked. but the college student who did it won't get any hard time. they said he should spend a day and a half in a halfway house, not a prison. in court, he apol jietzed to the -- apologized to the palin family. he could have gotten up to two years in prison. president obama is wrapping up his 10-day trip to asia. joel brown tells us, the president is dealing with new

issues as well. while g20 leaders toasted what they call a successful summit, president obama left south korea with little to celebrate. he failed to strike a deal with south koreans on a free trade agreement that has been delayed for years. >> do we have a deal that, woes for us-- that works for us? that's my first application. -- first obligation. >> and the president had no luck putting pressure on world leaders. after the setbacks in south korea, reporters traveling with the president asked him if he had been hurt by the punishment his party took in the midterm election. >> the answer to the second question is no. >> things won't get any easier when the president gets back here to the white house. next week, he'll sit down with congress's newly-empowered president to talk about tax cuts. >> reporter: while the president wants to let tax cuts expire for hose making -- those

2600. lack of focus. a new study finds the average person spends nearly half of today doing one thing while thinking about something else. sarah winter brill find thes out why our minds have been wandering and how it can help our health. in a life dominated by texts and tweets, turns out, most of us are easily distracted. according to a new harvard university study, our minds drift 46% of the time. >> would you say your mind wanders. >> oh, of course. all the time. >> most admitted it. >> when i'm at work, i think about school, when i'm at school, i think about work. >> it's a catch-22. >> snerksz. >> yeah. >> are you thinking about something else while we're doing this interview? >> yep. >> research found a lack of focus can make you unhappy. >> what we found was when people tended to mind wander,

they tended to be less focused on what they were doing. >> reporter: also, what you're being distracted from plays a part in your overall well being t. mind wandering typically leads to the most unpleasant thoughts. while having a conversation, making love, and taking walks is the most pleasant ones. >> i think maybe one of the reasons is that the brain likes to be stimulated. >> reporter: so the next time you find yourself in a less- than-stimulating situation, like shopping for groceries, do yourself a favor, and focus. >> when your mind wanders, what are you thinking about? >> retiring. >> i don't blame you. >> not working. >> mine wandering was -- mind wandering was first discussed by doctors in the 50s. and has recently become a growing research topic. delightfully, live look outside right now. hopefully had will continue -- this will continue now for a while before winter sets in.

in north carolina. police say they have found the remains of 10-year-old zara baker. her stepmother has been arrested for writing a fake ransom note after zara disappeared. jessica is in the newsroom with more on how an amber alert helped find girls. >> reporter: the mother said an unknown woman took her child, claiming she was from a state agency. the little girl was found by iowa state troopers after an amber alert was sent out. her mother gave the license plate of the vehicle that took the girl. police say a girl's father and a friend of has other than in the van with the child. no charges are pending in missouri. >> the father of the girl claims he took her because she is being mistreated. a california man is robbed at gunpoint in his own backyard. stephanie abrams has details for wjz.

>> reporter: bernard townsend has been breeding akc bulldogs for the last nine years in his south los angeles home. they're expensive to raise and sell for thousands. but he never had a problem, until yesterday. >> he was standing right here as he came in the gate. >> when cookie here jumped on the man who said he was interested in buying, bernard took her inside. >> i went to come out. that's when he had the gun on me like that. he said, don't move. then another guy came. >> reporter: it's -- that's when star, a show quality bulldog, priced alt $3600, and baby glen, at $2700, were stolen. >> one puppy was bell right -- exactly right here. and the other puppy was exactly right there. he grabbed both of them. so i was thinking of starting to try to start fighting b.. but something told me, just don't move. >> reporter: bernard has two puppies left but is very distraught. it took a lot of work just to breed them. >> they have to have c- sections. the whole process is about $2300 to $2700 just to have the

and the sun is just setting on this beautiful friday. now, it started off very chilly across the region, as you probably know. if you're up this morning, at 6:00, 7:00, frost everywhere, except right downtown, which stayed well above freezing. most places again tonight will again get to the freezing mark. we have very, very dry air. look at this. it warmed up. this is typical of the great

basin in nevada. utah kind of weather. 65 in the afternoon. with a dew point of 13 degrees, is extremely low. the humidity. this is about the lowest you will ever find here, ever. 13%. a couple of months ago, i think it got down to 12%. north winds at 3. barometer, 30.4 inches. right now, it's holding steady. 61 in elkton. 60 in hagerstown. ocean city. a little cooler by the water. very dry air. and with dry air, clear skies, light winds. temperatures will begin to tumble all over again. very typical again. out in the great basin, there are temperatures in the 70s in the daytime. for us, this air is extremely dry. 66/28 today. now, downtown, just 8 miles from bwi marshall. the low was 45 degrees. that's a huge spread in such a short distance. and just shows you how variable

weather and temperatures can be around an urban area. 58/36 are the averages. and the record, 78 and 18 back in 1957. right now, very light winds, not a major factor anywhere in the area. the only real weather we have to talk about for our region. out here in the central plains. slowly but surely, this front is going to move off to the east. it will develop low pressure and bring us a pretty good chance, we think, of rain here. but not until tuesday. until then, beautiful weather along the east coast continues. this big island of high pressure will continue to dominate. our winds become a little more west/southwest. keeps us in the mild air. out to the west, it starts to cool down. we're not even going to cool down until maybe the end of next week. enjoy. a lot of sunshine. and mild temps again this weekend. this weekend will be warmer than last weekend. by at least 10 degrees. northeast winds, 5 to 10 knots on the bay. bay temp, around 54. tonight, clear, cold, frosty down around 30. some upper 20s to 40s in the
