island this morning hoping to find clues. we'll tell you if they did and expect to hear from the boy's father later today. first, a new lear for president obama in warrant today. congress is back in session with democrats still controlling both houses but only for the next months. so, the question is, will he be able to get anything done during this lame duck session? cbs news congressional correspondent nancy cord des joins us from capitol hill. good morning, nancy. >> reporter: good morning, harry. the first item on his agenda, are tax cuts, the bush-era tax cuts set to expire at the end of the year so they don't have much time to figure it out. the president wants to extend some of them. the republicans want to extend all of them but are now signalling a willingness, both sides, to compromise. heading home from asia, president obama told reporters on air force one he's open to a compromise with republicans who want to extend the bush tax cuts to everyone, including the wealthiest americans. >> i want to hear from them how strongly they feel about it,

particularly given that they're also saying they want to control the deficit and debt. >> reporter: republicans, in turn, signaled they might be open to a temporary extension of all the tax cuts for a couple of years. >> well, if that's all we can get out of the president, and he is the president, so we'll work with him on that. >> reporter: for democrats, cutting a deal now is crucial because in january, they lose their house majority. nearly 100 newly elected members, all but eight of them republicans, arrived in washington this weekend for a one-week orientation. have you spent much time in washington in the past. >> i have not. i have not. but, we're looking forward to it. >> reporter: more than a third have never held elective office before. 32 of them are small business owners. at least 37 of the incoming members consider themselves part of the tea party, determined to make their mark on the republican party. >> i'm not going to compromise my principles, that's very important that we stick to our principles but as listening as

i'm fighting toward a limited government, free markets, individual liberty, i'm willing to accept that i'm not going to get an ideal system. >> reporter: today, all those new members will get a crash course in government, an all-day class, harry, called congress 101. >> nancy cordes in washington this morning, thank you very much. also in washington, cbs news political analyst john dickerson. john, good morning. >> good morning, harry. >> let's talk about the bush tax cuts a bit. we say it over and over again, we've been saying it for months now, a lot of people really don't understand what's at stake here. president bush put in these tax cuts a couple years ago, they are set to expire at the end of the year. what is all this -- what's all the haggling about? >> that's right. they were designed to expire at this time and the problem is nobody wants this em to expire but republicans and democrats can't agree at the moment on how to biscly design them. and if they can't come up with an agreement, then everybody's taxes will increase. so, the white house and president says he doesn't want to give a tax cut to millionairs

and billionairs and republicans say you've got to give a tax cut to everybody. now they are trying to dance around and figure out how to come up with some kind of agreement because they know in the end they have to do something. >> one of the things that's been floated in the last 48 hours or so was, okay, let's let the tax cuts -- let's keep this permanent for almost everybody except people making over a million dollars and then maybe add an incentive in here and we'll have tax breaks for small business people. like that actually get through somehow? >> senator mark warner of virginia, democrat, has suggested that republicans don't want to delink these two. they know if that happens they know maybe the middle-class tax cut the pass, more popular thing and they will lose the larger tax cut for everyone. this is being floated, one of the things in the pot. another suggestion from chuck schumer, democrat of new york, to raise that family level up to a million dollars. in other words everybody under a

million dollars gets a tax cut. i don't think republicans will jump right at those alternatives at the moment. >> congress and the president supposed to have dinner pretty soon and what's the anticipation about that? >> they are going to have dinner. there will be some humble pie and some crow eaten, probably. and they will have to get past the fact they've all been saying these terrible things about each other on the campaign trail for the last several months but this is the beginning of the ice breaking process. the president has said and he said on his way back from his trip last night that he wants to go back to his first principles, one of them is bipartisanship and so he's got to start trying to find a way to work with these republicans. >> so interesting, even as these young congressfolk come into town a tug-of-war already within the republican party. the "d" party folks say we're not so sure we want to go to all these orientations because we don't want to be corrupted by you. >> a lot of people have come to town to push against the system they are now a part of and we'll

see it in two interesting ways, there will be a vote among republicans about what to do about earmarks, not a huge part of the budget, not a huge creator of this enormous budget deficit. very small, indeed. but they are symbolically large and a lot of the tea party candidates signed pledges. some of the members who came back are, you he know, in the senate want to keep earmarks. there will be a fight there and also a fight about the tax cuts, what kind of compromise will republicans stands for with the president. >> john dirk son in washington, thank you very much. do appreciate it. good to see you. >> thank you. >> erica hill is at the news desk and has a check of the rest of the headlines. good morning, erica. >> good morning on this monday. seven people dead this morning at least 20 injured following an explosion at a resort hotel. it happened on mexico's caribbean coast in playa del carmen. cbs's preeti arla has more. >> reporter: a powerful sploegs ripped through south of cancun mexico saturday killing five

homeland secretary -- is calling for calm asking for air travelers to have patience when it comes to the new procedures some. groups including pilots and whole lot of passengers say the new security procedures violate a person's right and some even call for a boycott during the very busy thanksgiving holiday. cbs news travel editor peter greeberg is here with more on this. good morning. >> good morning. >> what are the main concerns you hear about the full-body scanners. >> talking about 2200 check points at airports, a lot of scann scanners. three big issues, privacy, health and safety and of course the process of going through them itself. >> exactly how long that will take. >> exactly. >> talk first about the privacy issue. i for one want to know who's looking at these images, are they being recorded anywhere? do we know the answers to any of those. >> the tsa claims they aren't archiving these images people can't archive them or store them. for those like myself who have gone through that machine you

have to take everything out of your pockets, not just metal, everything comes out of your pockets then they scan you then a guy with a walkie talkie talking to somebody else in a closed room to see if you have been cleared. it takes a while. >> do they know how much they can see? >> some of these grums are calling this like a virtually strip search or a grope. the points is after the underwear bomber they want to see everything you are carrying inside your clothing. there is a reason for it. >> the last couple of days the patdowns, some people need to forego these machines altogether and apt for a patdown have become even more invasive. >> the tsa changed the rules they are allowed to use the fingers and palm of their hand to feel around breasts and genitalia. >> what? have they gone too far. >> we are about to find out. you can opt out of the scanner machine but they are not going to tell you you can, you have to ask. once you do, they have to get another agent over there and delays the process. >> talk about delays, the main concern people have over the

holidays. how much extra time will it take if you have to go through these machines versus the old ones? >> the old ones, just walk through. the new ones, you've got to take everything out of your pockets and stand with your arms outstretched, they scan you as the thing goes around and you have to wait for clearance. that will take between three and four minutes. plult ply that by the number of passengers in line, assuming nobody opts out. >> or assuming they don't find anything suspicious and have to check, right. >> exactly. assuming you opt out they have to get another agent over there and they don't have enough agents to do that. if everybody wants to do this boycott and opt out, the lines will be really long wafnlsts do you suggest? are there any solutions? >> a couple, number one, not every airport has the scannerners right now coming in slowly some. airports you'll notice at the security check points there is a scanner and mag no tom ter. my advice go for the mag no tom ter. if you go for the scanner, you'll be later. >> or go to an airport that doesn't have them yet. >> or yeah, most people don't have the choice because they

have already booked their fwlits. they are still learning this process at the tsa and if janet na pal ton no is asking for patience, there's a reason for that. >> thanks so much. harry. turning to the case of chyrkyron horman, the boy missing since june his father is again holding a news conference to again ask for anyone with information to koum forward. our correspondent jeff glor has the latest. >> good morning. his parents say this morning they still have hope he'll be found alive but after months of a fruitless investigation authorities have launched a new search for evidence and this time is under water. dive teams from eight agencies began a painstaking process of searching the murky waters of this channel. they were hampered by water so black one official called it diving by braille. >> not a lot of visibility. some places, only a foot. but, they just take it, you

know, slow and take it carefully. >> reporter: it's been more than a month since official and volunteers on horseback scoured this island for evidence. while the search for him seems exhaustive, investigators still have not found the one clue that might crack the case. >> this is not a homicide. it's not a kidnapping for hire we know of or ransom. the fact is there's not even a discernible crime scene. >> reporter: the latest search comes days after his father asked the judge to punish terry hor mon if she doesn't answer questions about her step-son, the last known person to see him alive and a focus of the investigation. in divorce documents, he insists teri has information concerning kyron's whereabouts and that she won't talk because her testimony will lead to criminal liability for kyron's disappearance. >> no judge, particularly in a divorce case, is going to force terry harmon to testify. she's entitled like every other citizen to maintain her silence. >> reporter: the two locked in a

where the girl and three others disappeared on wednesday. >> she is in good condition. she was taken to a hospital for evaluation. >> reporter: there's been no sign of her mother, tina her man, 10-year-old brother kody or family friend stephanie sprang despite a massive search. hoffman, a 30-year-old ex-con was arrested without a struggle about 8:00 a.m. sunday by s.w.a.t. team officers who blasted their way through the front door . >> there was two sheriff cars walking the road here and all kind of sheriff cars started pulling up and the s.w.a.t. team came. >> reporter: the suspect is expected in court later today. authorities say intel jins gleaned from interviews led them to hoffman's home. police believe he had been in control of sarah since she was abducted wednesday. >> he is a weirde, he really was a weirde. he sat in the trees. if you look back in the tree, there's a hammock he would sit

and watch people. he's just different. >> as far as knowing the family, we're uncertain whether he knew them, they knew him. >> reporter: for now, the case is still classified as a missing persons investigation but police found what they called an unusual amount of blood in the family home, though whose blood is unclear. but, so far, authorities say that suspect is not cooperating and they say it's likely additional charges will be filed against him. maggie? >> dean reynolds in mt. vernon, ohio, thank you. joining us from washington criminal profiler pat brown. good morning. >> good morning, maggie. >> from the details we know so far, the fact an unusual amount of blood was found in the home does that tell you the people were likely alive or dead? >> well, it's not very good news. obviously we know one has been severely injured and the simple fact they are somewhere out there and we don't know where and this man is not telling us leads me to believe something probably not too good has happened to them. >> wouldn't it be difficult to

hide three bodies? no one has found a trace anywhere. >> this whole case is like an incredible mystery. we don't know everything that the police know at this point so there may be some pieces of evidence that, you know, i'm not aware of that would really lock this in. but, they got their information through interviews, so how this was pointed to this particular man is going to be something we're going to find out. one other thing i can't imagine how this man worked alone. we are looking at this a lot of people saying this guy wanted that 13-year-old girl. when you have a sex predator he wants that teen-aged girl she is usually walking down the street one day, he's watching from a nearby house. she's home alone, he grabs her. why would he go in there and take a 13-year-old girl when he knows everybody else is there, as well. there were two cars parked tht driveway. it doesn't make sense that was the entire motivation here and he'd do this alone taking four people with him. it's a little confusing. i think there might be somebody else involved. >> wouldn't it seem to you this girl, 13-year-old girl who was rescued would be key to finding out what happened to the other three. >> you would think so, at some point she had to have her eyes

available unless he she is so emotionally tramtized she can't discuss anything at this point but you would think she would have an idea who was in the house and who took them and where they went so they are probably not telling us what she knew. >> neighbors say this suspect was odd. one mother was so afraid of him she would bring her kids inside whenever he was outside. it seems to me as though there were warning signs but then again being odd is not a crime. is there anything that could have been done? >> oh, no, not really there. are many, many odd people out there and there's certainly a lot of psychopaths living in our communities and we say, god that, guy is creepy but doesn't necessarily go out and kidnap and rape and murder people. all we do is try to keep away from them -- >> he did have a criminal record not as a pedophile, but an arsonist. can you take me inside his bound. >> it means he has a criminal mind. people don usually set fires unless they've got some kind of

product cheaper somewhere else. keep in mind maybe the price started high and therefore the discount looks big but it's not significant when you look at the total price. one way to check this out and to vet this, comparison shop. we've told you previously about websites. all of these places are places you were check and figure out whether or not you are gestd the lowest price on something. >> all right. we're out there and decide to go on a saturday morning at 9:00 maybe not the best time to go. >> probably not your best shot and the national retail federation says the best time to go shopping is the night before a sale. after 6:00, when crowds are going to be less but the computer in the different retailers probably reflect the prices and in many cases if you go to a retailer and say you're having a big sale tomorrow, i want that price, they'll give it you to. >> sometimes it seems like the bate-and-switch. you see the ad, the comeon and you go to the store and they say, oh, we're out of that. how do you avoid that. >> do your research before you

get to the mall and make sure you have your information straight. >> the other thing that happens, we go in and get a great deal on whatever it, is a flat-screen tv and the first thing we're asked as soon as we agree to buy the thing is whether or not we want a warranty. >> and this is the way retailers make so much of their money. they keep about 50% of what you pay for the warranty. most -- most people will tell you not to take that warranty. most people will say, most of the experts will say you're already going to get most of the things that you would want under warranty, under warranty under the standard warranty without paying for it. also if you pay by credit card a number of credit cards extent it for you. >> should be able to back it up. last but not least, what about return policy, especially this time of year, all these sales will and, you know, sending the gift to grandma or whatever, if she doesn't want it can, we send it back? >> she can send it back if she keeps the receipt and everything in the box. make sure each retailer, some have different return policies so check before and make sure you include that receipt for whomever is getting that gift. >> all about the receipt.

latest on what to look out for. good morning. >> good morning, maggie. >> a huge number. >> this study was presented out of this week's session for the american heart association, the biggest cardiology meeting in the world and looked at almost 20,000 healthy women, average age 57. most were health care professionals anyone from a nurse's aide to a ph.d. and followed them for ten years. what they found is that those who had a higher degree of job strain actually were at 40% increased risk for overall cardiovascular disease. as you said, maggie, an 88% increased risk for heart attack. >> how did they define "job strain". >> job strain for this study included people who felt they were in jobs with little or no decision making, they were very demanding jobs and in particular didn't allow them to use their individual creativity. >> not necessarily the boss but worker bees. >> exactly. this could be an ph.d. or rn. it wasn't necessarily at the lower end of the work hierarchy. >> got it.

they also looked at the particular affect of job insecurity which so many feem in this economy. how does that affect you physically. >> as you said, job insecurity could be someone swo has a job and fears they might be losing it or out of work potentially. basically what they found those who stated they had a degree of job insecurity also were at higher risk for obesity, hypertension, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, all those things as we know really stack the desk for us in terms of risk for cardiovascular lar disease. >> ideally we would eliminate all the stress but that is not realistically. how do you handle the stress in a better way nimplts general, whether at home working, because a lot of people do, or a job place you feel is giving you significant stress, try to minimize the negatives and accentuate or maximize the positives. obviously one of the biggest negatives people should strive to cut out completely is smoking. >> i knew you would say that. >> smoking outside their jobs,

standing on the street. >> a stress buster having the opposite effect. >> exactly the worst thing you can do for your help, meditation or deep breathesing exercises if you can't leave your desk or step outside for a mental health break, do deep breathing, 10 minutes a day can really, really help. obviously avoiding junk food we know especially in the health care profession there is junk food everywhere, the watercooler. >> you have access. >> exactly. you want to try to minimize that and try to eat more healthfully at work. if you can, take a walk during the day. i know near high hospital i see a lot of health care professionals walking during their breaks which can do wonders not only for your skik lolg cal but physical well-being. >> do you find stay-at-home-moms have a similar level of stress. >> well, they haven't done the study yet but in terms of the patients i see they are balance can a lot, a lot of balls in the air worrying about their

phone. his goal, get back to new york by the end of the week. so, let's check in with dave, who has made it all the way to -- >> drum roll? >> yep. >> yakima, washington this morning. >> dave, how are you doing, buddy? >> a little disappointed we're not further to the east, but we're in good shape at this point. i'm off interstate 82, we're at the gear jamme rsdzs truck stop right now. to give you some numbers -- and i've got to tell you, if you are ever in this area and need a good breakfast and i know because i'm watching people eat right now at gear jammers. >> are you warm enough? you don't look warm enough. >> no, i'm not because i got a ride from bellingham to seattle with a great guy named devon yesterday. and i left my jacket in his car and i'm not kidding. so, he's going to fedex it to me but i don't know where i'll be the next day somewhere so that's a problem in and of itself.

we've traveled 2,098 miles by air and car. still to go, 27, 076 by car or 23, 31 nautical miles. we're well behind. anchorage, i don't know how bright an idea. anchorage up to fairbanks to bellingham, drove to seattle, drove over to fpiff washington and here to yak man and i have $383 in my pocket, i'll live large today. not bad. we worked really hard. to understand this whole journey, you have to begin at the very beginning. anchorage, alaska, the morn-most major city in america, rugged and frigid, it would have been a hard pick to find a starting point that felt more remote. i got a warm welcome in this very cold place, although it

seemed that the odds were stacked against me. >> i'm kind of scared, i have to say. i don't know if you are going to be able to do this. >> this is tough. >> i began my odyssey in a place of breathtaking beauty, more than 4300 miles from home and dependent on the kindness of strangers to get me back. if you wanted the front sheet, you should have called it! strangers like jessica peterson who offered me my first ride. >> there is so many nice people here alls you need to do is flash your pearly whites and i think people will take sympathy on you. >> thanks for letting me carpool. i appreciate that! with only $50 in my pocket, the girls order of business was to earn some cash. >> how many pounds of fish will i process today? >> today, you are probably going to be somewhere right around two to three thousand pounds of fish during the time you're here. >> we got a little sloppy here

and here. but, you know, if you hold it the right way, you really don't know. word of my willingness to work spread and job offers poured in. soon, i was changing tires. shoveling snow, and driving alaska's version of a dream machine, the zamboni at the university of alaska, anchorage. then, an air ambulance company e-mailed me. they he had an open seat on a flight to washington state but it required an overnight pit stop in fairbanks. wrong way, but i had no other options. air ambulances are used frequently throughout alaska. for some, the only way to get medical care is by airplane. what are you to these people you help? >> um, i hope -- my goal is to treat patients the way i want my family and friends to be treated. >> although i wasn't a patient, i felt that same type of care.

nonetheless, i had to pay for it by unloading 300 pounds of medical cargo. although i only had 12 hours in fairbanks, i was able to land a job at china hot springs and remote resort 60 miles outside of downtown fairbanks. bernie carl put me to work. i chopped wood. even carved martini glasses out of ice for their ice hotel. foeshz magazine voted this the dumbest business idea in 2004. we tell everyone foeshz can kiss my [ bleep ] it features and amazing collection of ice sculptures, ice bar and chandeliers made of individually carved ice crystals. >> here's where you'll be staying tonight. >> the resort gives all their employees room and board and bernie showed me where i'd be sleeping. >> can you sleep in a 20 degree room like this? >> if you're a man. >> oh. >> pretty cool -- and cold. 20 degrees all night inside.

in the morning, it was time to defrost and then to wing my way to the lower 48. as we took off and i looked down on alaska's frozen beauty, i realized what an amazing land i was leaving and what an amazing trip it had already been. >> cool stuff, dave. now what's on the agenda today? >> i have absolutely no idea. [ laughter ] >> you know, we have the -- the problem is, to be honest with you, with anyone i approach at this point, i smell like halibut and cigarette smoke from working in the bingo hall last night. we're at a truck stop. i'm near an airport. and i really have no idea what we're going to do. the key is, i need miles today. i need to get eastward. >> you need to make some serious progress. although you've made some great friends. >> there is that. >> i've got to tell you

flying over the stage at high speeds during key moments in the show. it's going to take everything i've got to pull in this off. the physical demands of circ deso lal are intense. before i could take the stage i had to take a physical. this two-time olympic gymnast kindly offered to test my abilities. looks like it's fun on stage and the torture chamber is down here. >> be happy we're not doing swings. >> i'm happy about everything we're not doing today. ridiculous! >> ten shows a week, 438 shows a day. >> how many a year? >> 478. >> and training during the week, as well. >> yes. >> that blows my mind. after the toughest workout of my life, they raised me to the rafters for rehearsal.

my stomach was in knots. >> stay calm. don't wiggle around a, just -- >> don't panic. i almost missed that grab going across. i can do it during the show, i think. that grab was a bit more strenuous than i thought. i think we need to give it at least one more go-around. there will be 1800 people out here tonight. my heart rate will be going pretty quick again i think by the time i'm on stage. >> the successful rehearsal boosted my confidence. i was ready to do this thing! but first, i had to make a small sacrifice for the sake of show biz. >> when elvis went into the military it was a big deal we had to have his haircut.

we need to clean up your haircut and get you clean shaven. >> elvis made sacrifice for the country and i'm making mine with the moustache. >> you. >> are with my warrobe and makeup complete i transformed into a real cirque du soleil performer. >> our newest castmember, everybody, tyler. [ cheering ] >> they are all amped up. i'm fired up now! the show started and i walked into position, my heart was racing as i began my descent. this was happening. i reached for the net, climbed down and saluted. mission accomplished. ♪ return to sender ♪ return to sender >> that went pretty quick. >> good job. >> thanks.

>> having the chance to perform with this amazing cast was a dream come true. >> i was a little bit nervous holding on to the rope but once i started going i don't really remember it at all. all i remembered was to keep my butt and legs up. i somehow was allowed often the circ today so lay stage. seeing it that close, was cool, absolutely amazing. >> the true test, of course, of your performance, none of the 1800 people asked for their money back, right. >> no. at least not that i know of so far. >> it's funny. you said it looked, you know you see you going down the zip line and have to grab it and it doesn't look that bad. it's really tough. >> like significantly more strenuously than i thought because you are kind of hauling when you come in. i only got to practice twice in warm-ups. >> that's it. >> one with lights on and one with lights off and music going. the first time i almost missed it. i went and grabbed with my right and lost the grab and got it

barely. i was a little shook for the real deal. >> after you are done and see the rest of the show and see the performers afterwards they look a little nervous like tyler might move in on my territory? >> i don't think they were too nervous about that. when you see them train and work out they do over 450 shows a year and train, as well. when i saw the hindz the stage stuff, i had a new appreciation for it. the guy, grant, who trained me, two-time olympian, it was, i mean, a little tough. >> a lot of these folks you may not realize people see the shows but like you said they are dancers and gymnasts and have to be able to do it all. really the hardest workout you've gone through, huh. >>? by a long shot. i knew i was in trouble. dude rips off his shirt, with the olympic tattoo and thought -- >> do you think you were a little over your head, we sent you on the toughest assignment. >> my alpha came out and i'm

water, a little bit of chili flake. we'll pat it and dry it a because you want the seasoning to stick to it like this. >> right. >> i have a seasoning of chili powder, you could min, salt and pepper, thyme and rosemary. we'll season the heck out of it. >> you don't have to rub it. >> you can rub it, harry, if enjoy doing that, that's fine. >> oh, whatever. [ laughter ] >> get it nice and seasoned. don't be shy with the seasoning because you want to really coat it on. >> it's going to sit in there for a couple of hours, right? >> a lot of hours. this is something i like to do, i add coca-cola to give it steam, instead of water. >> i like it. >> being from texas we like our coca-cola in texas. >> i like it. anybody ever tried doctor pepper? >> people try it a lot because we like doctor pepper. >> just curious. >> couple cokes. >> that's it? >> that's it, really. >> do you have to cover this thing up. >> absolutely.

you can do that, put a little foil on there. we're going to cover that up and i'm going to let you bring it over to the oven and i'll pull the hot one out. >> deal. >> getting to the part you like. >> yeah, because we've got to see the finished product. >> we'll put it in the oven, harry, 200 or 210 degrees. >> really low heat. >> really low heat about 10 or 11 hours. it's definitely a set it and forget it kind of situation, you know? then we reveal this here. look at that. >> oh, my lord! look at that. >> so, it's been cooking and you can see the bones -- >> literally -- >> -- take themselves out. that's kind of how we like to do it. >> maybe one of the coolest things we've done soinchts then you can take this and we're going to take it out of the coca-cola bath here, very, very carefully. >> like, what, 10, 11 hours? >> yeah, about 11 hours. you can see -- how this is going to kind of -- >> oh, it's going to just come
