race against time. police in ohio search frantically for a missing family. >> a daughter is found alive. can she lead police to them? hi. i'm kai jackson. >> and i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> police are questioning a suspect. manuel gallegus is in mount vernon, ohio, where the intense search is under way. police searching for a missing ohio family combed through this park, about 40 miles north of columbus. patrol helicopters flew overhead, as officers used boats to check the late lake. -- the lake. >> we still would like to remain a hopeful attitude. >> reporter: the public park is just a block from the house, where a s.w.a.t. team rescued 13-year-old sarah maynard. >> i heard them say.

they all ran back in in the squad. >> reporter: police found matthew maynard. they arrested him. they are still trying to find has 10-year-old brother cody, mother tina herman, and family friend tiffany sprang. police found blood in the home, about 10 miles from the park and hoffman's house. but within walking distance from where hoffman's mother and stepfather live. >> sprang's father helped lead a group of volunteers who came to help with the search monday. >> thank you, guys. be careful yourselves, please. >> reporter: hoffman's neighbors say he often went to the park. right now, he is the only suspect. the deputies say they searched for him wednesday night. sarah has left the hospital and has been reunited with other family members. >> i recall for -- would call her the epitome of bravery. >> reporter: she told police she last saw her mother and

brother in their home wednesday. >> hoffman has a prior conviction in colorado for arson. he is tentatively scheduled for a bond hearing tomorrow afternoon. grisly scene. a maryland native is found dead. this scene in eerie-- erie, pennsylvania. >> she was murdered, along with her 7-year-old son and 4-year- old daughter. a third child was wounded in the attack. the bodies were found inside the home of a kitchen in erie this week. someone called police when jamie ran near her home and never came back. police identified the killer as the father. 21-year-old brian dakus. after shooting malinowski. jamie malinowski wrote on her facebook page just last week that she was planning to leave backus. >> the boy who survived the

shooting suffered a wound to his ear. we have breaking news from prince george's county. two days after the county executive is arrested, three prince george's county police officers are put in handcuffs by the fbi. wjz is in prince george's county. derek valcourt has details of this breaking arrest and if the two are linked. derek? >> reporter: in fact, the fbi says the two cases are linked. a total of nine more arrests here in prince george's county today. as you mentioned, three prince george's county police officers, on what the fbi labels as extortion and drug trafficking charges. the fbi does say that those arrests are linked to the jack johnson corruption investigation, although they will not say how. these are the latest developments in what has become the biggest political scandal in maryland so far this year. >> reporter: many in prince george's county, still reeling over the allegations against county executive jack johnson. >> if it's true, it would be horrible. you'd feel let down by someone

that you trusted. >> i think it's terrible. >> reporter: johnson and his wife, arrested on corruption charges friday. their home raided by the fbi, moments after a wire-tap phone conversation between the couple. the fbi claims they discussed a $100,000 check from a developer, just as fbi alleges were knocking on -- agents were knocking on the door. leslie johnson asked, do you want me to put it down the toilet? jack johnson said, yes, flush that. >> reporter: they discussed almost $8,000 in cash, where johnson allegedly told his wife to hide the money in her bra. the charges may be linked to a civil case. in a separate case, a hotel owner says johnson solicited bribes. >> i'm innocent of these charges. and i just can't wait for the facts to come out. >> reporter: those facts will have johnson defending himself in a federal courtroom, where prosecutors hope the case will send a stern message to

pellet. anybody with information is urged to contact the baltimore county police. well, safety in numbers. and on some college campuses in maryland, even that doesn't stop the crime. there is a surge on three campuses in the last week alone. >> reporter: mary, suspects are still on the loose. after 5:00, people are held on three different baltimore college campuses. police do not believe the robberies are related or part of any spree. one victim was held up at knife point at the campus of loyola university. robbers at essex county used guns on their victims. fortunately, nobody was hurt. so far, they do not have specific descriptions of any of the suspects in these robberies. and we will have more on the high alert on local campuses coming up in a live report at 5:00 and 6:00. after a foggy start, the skies started to clear up a little bit. outside now, the clouds are breaking for a little sun.

well, they have, trust us. wjz has weather and traffic together. meteorologist bernadette woods, standing by here with the updated numbers from first warning weather. hi, bernadette. >> hello, kai and everybody out there. yes, a few peeks of sunshine. and they look so bright and sunny. this cold front sort of bypasses, sort of skimming along maryland and heading off to the northeast. but take a look when we open this up. here's the next storm coming our way. this is the biggest one. it's scooting across the south and picking up a lot more moisture toward maryland. and we'll have a full forecast on that coming up shortly. let's check in on the roads for you right now. here's kristy breslin. >> hi, mary. hi, everyone. so far, we have a couple of delays out there. a lot of accidents, though. if you are traveling on the beltway, some brake lights to watch out for. outer loop also congested there from providence to york road. taking a look at 95, southbound slow there.

from the porch of the british high commission in nairobi on their first mission. they came after somali pirates held them hostage for more than a year. but their joy turned to sadness when they learned that paul's father died while they were in captivity. in october of last year, somali pirates seized the retired couple in the indian ocean. the chandlers say their captors held them at gunpoint and beat them when they refused to be separated. in videos released by the pirates, rachel chandler showed the strain. >> it's because i'm not with my husband that i'm feeling so lonely and desperate. >> reporter: the pirates demanded $7 million in ransom. in the end, they reportedly settled for close to a million, most of it raised by the chandlers' family. britain said it helped arrange the safe release of the chandlers. but they insist they did not

pay ransom money. >> the british government will never reward hostage taking. >> reporter: but it's big business in somalia, where pirates are still holding close to 20 hostages in five ships. and there's little chance that the pirates who held the chandlers for close to 188 days, will ever be charged. >> the retired couple from kent, england, had planned to spend their retirement sailing around the world. despite their ordeal, paul chandler said ideally, he'd like to get back to sea soon. and still ahead. a thanksgiving day recall. if you have your turkey already, you may want to grab a pencil. this maryland man is now cancer-free. but more than 42,000 others will be diagnosed with pan pancreatic cancer this year. what are the early warning signs? i'm andrea fujii. that story ahead on wjz eyewitness news.

you know, it doesn't really matter what it's like today. because yesterday was so nice. and saturday was so nice. >> we had an amazing stretch of weather around here. we really have. and even though it was cooler today, we were right on par with our averages. we're going to show you temperatures that were out there. so far today, we topped out at 56 degrees. and the average is 57. so we're right near there. we started out the day at 41 with that fog in place. it has been lifting. and a few peeks of sunshine out there. coming in now at 52 degrees. a lot of 50s in the state. even 40s in the mountains. the winds not much of a factor.

but they will start to become a factor over the next couple of days. right now what is going on, and the fog because of the low cloud is a cold front that scooted by. here's that first one. this one sort of just crosses through northwestern parts of the state. those have all lifted off to the north and kept us to the mild air. here's that next storm. this one is digging across the south. it's taking more of a southern track. picking up more moisture along the way. and going to move up the coast. rain moves in overnight, late tonight. and it's going to continue tomorrow. but it's really going to pick up as we head through the afternoon hours. and the center of the storm gets closer. it's going to take until wednesday morning for the storm to get out of here. here's the first storm. that levers us. second goes through tomorrow into wednesday morning. and then pulls away. when it pulls away, the winds will turn around to the northwest, and there is cooler air back here. much colder air, actually. because there is a lot of snow

in minnesota with that colder air. but we have been blocking it off to the northwest. it opens up the path for that cooler air to come our way. out on the water, small craft advisories do go on the water. before that happens, though, tonight, mostly cloudy skies. overall, today, we got close to 60 degrees. and today, we drop down into the 40s. by tomorrow, we are going to have that rain around. rain and drizzle at times. 57 for our high. so still very close for our average. we hang onto somewhat milder air, wednesday. and then cooler one is going to start to come. hasan agreed to testify. a military judge will decide if there is enough evidence for hasan to go on trial. hasan studied in bethesda to become an army psychiatrist. another maryland soldier dies in afghanistan. he died after being hit by a roadside bomb. he was stabilized where he died november 11th, veterans day. the 28-year-old soldier is from western port, allegheny county. lutes is married with two children. search continues for a missing ohio woman after a 13- year-old girl was found alive. police found sarah maynard bound and gagged in the home of 30-year-old suspect matthew hoffman. but there has been no sign of the girl's mother, her 10-year- old brother, or a family friend who had been missing for nearly a week. an unusual amount of brood was -- blood was found in the family home, though whose bhownd blood is unclear-- blood is unclear. hoffman was arrested, but

police say he is not cooperating. kiman horman's parents say they still have hope he'll be found alive. but they have a new search. and this time it's under water. dive teams from eight agencies began the painstaking process of searching the murky waters of multinomah. sophisticated cameras helped pinpoint the dive sites. one official called it diving by braille. >> not a lot of visibility. some polices only -- places only a foot. but they take it slow and take it carefully. >> reporter: it's been more than a month now since officials and volunteers on horseback scoured sauvy island for evidence. and the search seems exhaustive. investigators still have not found the one clue that might crack the case. >> this is not a homicide. it's not a kidnapping for hire that we know of or ransom. and the fact is, there's not

even a discernible crime scene. >> reporter: the latest search comes after kaine horman asked the judge to punish teri horman if she doesn't answer questions. she was the last person known to have seen kyron alive. he says she has information concerning kyron's whereabouts and she won't answer because it will lead to criminal liability. >> no judge is going to force her to testify. she is entitled like any other citizen to maintain her silence. >> reporter: the two are locked in a bitter battle. early ther month, ter -- this month, she withdrew time with her 2-year-old, after kaine questioned her fitness as a parent and mental state. >> reporter: attorneys say kaine horman is using the divorce to vilify her.

the search for a newborn found abandoned at a catholic church. they found an infant in a duffel bag. detectives are concerned for the health of the mother. more than 42,000 americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year. and more than 80% of them will likely die from it. in tonight's healthwatch, andrea fujii explains the importance of early detection. >> hey, jim. how are you? >> 57-year-old jim ecron is a cancer survivor. and he may only be alive by chance. >> doctors discovered a tumor, the size of a tennis ball in my pancreas. >> less than a year later, he had it removed. that was more than a year ago.

doctors credit his being cancer- free to early detection. >> we don't have as effective forms of chemotherapy as we'd like. so the key to this is early detection and treatment. >> reporter: mammograms can help diagnosis breast cancer. but there is no early-detection screening tool for pancreatic cancer. >> reporter: so doctors say look for symptoms, like stomach or back aches, weight loss, jaundice, diabetes. and most importantly, a history of pancreatic cancer. >> the majority of patients even are not candidates for surgical therapy. that is, it's already spread by the time it's diagnosed. >> reporter: since his diagnosis, jim is helping to spread awareness, like at the event purple stride, maryland, last month. >> if you can save a life, that to me is tremendously meaningful. >> reporter: jim's life may never be the same. but he says what is most important is he is still living. >> i now need to take pancreatic enzymes every time i

grueling acts she endured during her 2002 abduction. he could spend the rest of his life in prison if he is convicted. today, an exstate trooper pled guilt to manslaughter in the murder of a black man in alabama. jessica kartalija is in the newsroom with details. >> reporter: prosecutors say james fowler shot jimmy jackson during a civil rights protest in 1965. jackson's death sparked so much controversy that the day of his killing became known as bloody sunday. jackson's father and sister were beat to the floor with a billy club, when jackson tried to help fowler. in court, fowler pleaded self- defense and was not charged. the case was reopened. today, fowler accepted a deal to serve six months in prison and complete six more on probation. denise? >> fowler, who is now 77 years old, apologized to the victim's family, after entering the pleas, saying he didn't mean to

kill anyone. the mother of missing north carolina girl says she wants to have her body taken to australia for burial. 10-year-old zara zara's body was taken home. so far, no one has been charged with her death. but her stepmother, lisa baker, is charged with obstruction of justice for writing a bogus ransom note after she disappeared. an explosion in cancun leaves several dead and others injured. >> reporter: a powerful explosion ripped through the restaurant of a resort hotel, just south of cancun, mexico sunday, killing five canadian tourists, including a 9-year- old boy. two mexican hotel employees were also killed. witnesses reported that the floor of the building blew through the ceiling, sending bodies, glass, and pieces of the restaurant flying. the grand riviera princess

hotel is a luxury 776-room resort. last month, a climate summit is scheduled to be held in the area. at first, it was feared the blast might be terrorist or drug cartel related. >> reporter: it is a sad event. but the possibility that this was an attack has been discarded, as we said from the beginning. where the reports from the hospital said that the wounds might be from shrapnel, they are not. >> reporter: investigators later thought that cooking gas might be to blame, but it now appears the blast was caused by an accumulation of gas from a nearby swamp. pria dearticla. quantas airlines will keep its airbus 380 grounded for a few more days. the decision comes after one of the engines burst into flames last week. they'll be replacing the faulty engines in the days to come. singapore airlines grounded three of its a380s last week.

in a lot of clouds. there were a few breaks. a little sun for about 10 to 20 minutes this afternoon. humidity is way up there. dew points up as well. 76%. the barometer, right now, holding steady. 30.01 inches. should fall, as low pressure will begin the approaches late, late tonight, into tomorrow. 57 in washington. ocean city, 56. out in oakland, still cloudy there. and 43. a lot cooler. our winds have primarily been all morning long, off the atlantic ocean. kept us in a very low overcast. we did have a little dry air and a little sun peeking out to the west of us. right now, east winds at 7. now, to the south, you can clearly see a big glob of rain from east texas over to georgia this morning. and it's beginning to make a move across the appalachians. the main low pressure is going to actually pass to our west. which means the bulk of the heaviest rain will be to our west. so here, you can see the rain

headed in our direction. look for rain, pretty much on and off most of the day tomorrow. but once it passes, wile actual -- we'll actually dry out rather quickly. sunshine here on wednesday. there is the rain moving up from atlanta now. heavier showers and thundershowers, with much warmer air across southern alabama. for us, just look for some rain. it's possible by tomorrow evening. there may be a rumble of thunder south and east of us, as a little warm air moves. but primarily, a wet and damp afternoon. and it will get a little cooler. on wednesday, actually not a bad day. but after that, temperatures will begin to get down below normal for the end of the week. southeast winds tomorrow, at around 10 knots. small craft advisory on the bay tomorrow. bay temp in the mid-50s, still. tonight, then, cloudy. late, late tonight. light rain and drizzle. 44, which is warmer than it's been the last four or five days. look for rain and drizzle.
