attorney general said that the county executive's arrest would be just the tip of the iceberg in their investigation into the corruption here in prince george's county. as promised, that investigation is getting a whole lot bigger tonight. we're learning about nine new arrests in this case, and a long list of additional criminal charges. >> reporter: among the arrests, three prince george's county police officers, charged in what the fbi calls an extortion and drug trafficking ring. this latest development, the result of a long, federal investigation into corruption in prince george's county that came to a head friday, as fbi agents raided the home of county executive jack johnson and his wife leslie. the two were arrested after fbi wire taps on johnson's telephone overheard him telling his wife to destroy and hide cash and checks that the fbi calls evidence that johnson was taking illegal payoffs from real estate developers in exchange for political favors. johnson, who denies any wrongdoing, returned to work

today, confident he'll be vindicated. >> just wanted the citizens of prince george's county to know that i'm going to remain strong. i'm going to finish what i started. >> the fbi tonight said they are trying to confiscate a long list of additional properties and cars that they say were obtained through illegal activity. meanwhile, the new incoming county executive-elect here in prince george's county is just about to start a press conference here, in which he will be addressing this entire corruption scandal that has rocked prince george's county, where we are live. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. and this just into wjz. sky eye chopper 13 is over the home of the liquor store owners implicated in this case, against some of the prince george's county police officers. this home in clarksville, howard county, is owned by

amrick and ra vinda millhigh, where it appears investigators are still on the scene at this moment. they are accused of paying those two officers derek talked about, to transport untaxed cigarettes and alcohol. stay with wjz on these arrests arrests and for more information on the charges and investigation, go to wjz.com. catching a sniper. five military buildings targeted. tonight, the department of justice is offering thousands of dollars to catch the person responsible. denise is in the newsroom with more on the award. denise? >> well, mary, $20,000. that's how much is being offered to catch the person who fired at military buildings in the d.c. area. all of the shootings happened either overnight or early in the morning. this is video of the scene from one of the recent shootings at a coast guard recruiting center in woodbridge, virginia. the pentagon, the national museum of the marine corps, and a marine recruiting center in suburban virginia, were targeted. no one was hurt, however, in those shootings. mary? >> denise, thank you.

police asked people to call 202- 278-2000. shards of glass fly into one person's eye. tonight, someone firing a bb gun is responsible. weijia jiang is following the seven for the -- search for the shooter. >> reporter: tonight, police are coming up short in that search. can they fear the shooter could strike again. >> reporter: it was supposed to be a quiet drive home from work. >> it was a nice day. i had my top down. >> reporter: but for gordon hester, it became a dangerous ride. >> out of nowhere, i got a pain on my right leg, like somebody had punched me. and i thought perhaps it was a bird that had flown into the convertible. >> reporter: hector quickly realized it was not a bird but a gunshot, leaving a nasty wound that swelled and bruised. police say his was one of five cars the triggerman randomly shot at. >> then you saw the bb. >> then i saw the bb on the floor mat. >> and you thought, really? >> yeah, right.

can you believe it? it's crazy. >> reporter: police say the bb gun shootings took place sunday, around 4:00 p.m. patrols surrounded the scenes where many windows were blown out. along with hector, a 25-year- old man was injured, when glass flew into his eye. >> reporter: police believe the shooter was hiding out in these woods. the elevated location gives the suspects two advantages. number 1, you can see the cars clearly. number 2, it's a great disguise. with all of these fringes, can you hide out anywhere. >> police conducted an extensive search throughout the area. but we were unable to locate the suspect. >> i got angry. so i turned the car around and went back to the area to see if i could see who had done that. >> reporter: angry, but ultimately relieved. >> it's ridiculous. that somebody didn't get hurt, that somebody didn't, you know, crash their car, when their window was shot out, or me getting hit in the leg. it's just lucky. >> reporter: police say bb guns

are illegal. in fact, they are common. but they come with a lot of strict guidelines. this suspect could face a long list of charges for assault and property damage. we're live at police headquarters tonight, weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> weijia, thank you. police say the victim who got glass in his eye was treated and released from the hospital. a break in that case that hit close to home for baltimore's mayor. police say they have arrested the man who broke into her husband's car. anthony thomas was arrested sunday. detectives interviewed thomas and he admitted to breaking into kent blake's vehicle. thomas now faces theft charges. a sexual assault. tonight, that's how one man is describing his experience with airport security. he chose not to go through those new body scanners, so he had to be screened the old- fashioned way. kendis gibson reports for wjz on the growing controversy. >> reporter: john tiner was borning -- boarding a flight in san diego, when he was asked to go through one of the tsa's new

body scanners. he said no. >> i opted out. they walked me around and explained to me that they were going to do a patdown. >> reporter: tyner refused that, too, recording the exchange with the agent on his cell phone. >> i don't understand how a sexual assault can be made on me. >> this is not considered a sexual assault. >> it would be if you weren't the government. >> reporter: that video went viral. and overnight, tyner became the public face of passenger frustration. >> i don't know. but i think it invades privacy. >> but riderath -- i'd rather be safe than not. >> reporter: scanners they say reveal too much. and the patdowns are invasive and humiliating. >> reporter: passengers have been complaining about these since they went into effect in july. but with recent cargo bomb incidents and travel about to start, officials are making no apologies about being more aggressive. >> this is all about making

sure that you, your family, and your kids are safe when they travel. >> reporter: a new website, we won't fly.com, is calling for passengers to protest, by not traveling on one of the busiest travel days of the year, the day before thanksgiving. the site's creator says it is getting 76,000 hits a day. nopol -- napolitano says the hits are growing. with the backlash from passengers growing, they may hear a lot. >> homesland security say -- homeland security says the x- ray machines do not pose any health risks for passengers. clouds rolling in as well as the chance for rain. bob turk and bernadette woods are tracking live doppler radar. bob? >> reporter: right now, things are quiet. >> had a lot of fog. clouds. down to our south. that's where we're looking at a big batch of rain. most of it, the heaviest, will pass just to our west. but we do expect to see a

pretty wet tuesday coming our way. might even start some light showers or drizzle. if you're heading out probably after 11:00, 12:00, then during the day tomorrow, looks damp pretty much all day long. what about the rest of the week and the end of the week? bernadette has a look at what we can expect. >> that storm is coming from south to north. we stay in the mild air. but when it gets out of here, the second half of the week, it's going to connect with cooler air and pull that back down. a real long stretch of mild air will be coming to an end this week. nothing that extreme. but temperatures in the low 50s for highs. but nothing that bad. a taste of freedom. somali pirates kidnap a british couple for more than 300 days. tonight, the couple is free and sharing their story. charlie d'agata reports for wjz, their freedom came with a price tag. >> reporter: they're one step closer to coming home.

paul and rachel chandler chandler wave from the porch on their first night of freedom. the british couple flew to the neighboring kenya sunday night after somali pirates held them hostage for more than a year. but their joy turned to sadness when they learned that paul's father died while they were in captivity. >> reporter: in october of last year, somali pirates seized the retired couple in the indian ocean. the chandlers say their captors held them at gunpoint and beat them when they refused to be separated. in videos released by the pirates, rachel chandler showed the strain. >> it's because i'm not with my husband. that i'm feeling so lonely and desperate. >> reporter: the pirates demanded $7 million in ransom. in the end, they reportedly settled for close to a million, most of it raised by the chandlers' family. britain's foreign office said it helped arrange the safe release of the chandlers, but officials insist, the british government did not pay one

penny in ransom money. >> the british government will never reward hostage taking. >> reporter: but it's big business in somalia, where pirates are still holding close to 500 hostages in more than 20 ships. and there's little chance the pirates who held the chandlers for 388 days, will ever be charged with their crime. in london, charlie d'agata, wjz eyewitness news. >> the retired couple from kent, england, had planned to spend their retirement sailing around the world. despite their ordeal, paul chandler said, ideally, he would like to be back at sea soon. where police found one member. family alive. i'm alex demetrick. parking. and a neighborhood fed up. that story as eyewitness news continues. this maryland man is now cancer-free. but more than 42,000 others will be diagnosed with

homeowners on morgan state university are beyond frustrated. alex demetrick reports, they are fed up with students parking in front of homes, forcing residents to park blocks away. parking around morgan state university isn't just tight, it can be impossible. >> it's not just during the day. this goes into the late hour of the night. sometimes up to 11:00 at night. we're afraid to go to the grocery store. when we when comeback, we know there is nowhere to park.

i know i have walked six blocks. they actually were texting and calling each other. when one moves out, another moves in. >> morgan does not seem to care. this neighborhood was here before morgan was here. >> reporter: frustrated by what they say was a lack of help for morgan, neighbors took to the streets. many marked except for permits. >> it does not work. >> curt anderson, who lives in the neighborhood, is pushing for tougher restrictions. >> we want to make it full-time residential parking. >> and that's fine. we certainly understand that. >> reporter: so morgan has reduced campus parking fees. >> the first half hour is free. and 50 cents an hour for every hour thereafter. i don't think you'll find a better deal. >> unless it's to park for free, squeezing out residents. >> morgan state university has a new president who will meet

with community associations this wednesday about the parking problems. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check with kristy breslin live at traffic control. overall, the rush hour is not a bad one. if you are traveling on the beltway, north side inner loop. just a couple of brake lights there. it will take you about 15 minutes to get through. not too bad for this time of day. delay, 20 minutes from baltimore national pike to liberty road. average speed, about 32 miles an hour. that's as far as 95 goes. no problems to report there. but southbound does slow down from mountain road to whitemarsh boulevard. we have an accident to watch out for. that's in the bel air region. 136. at philadelphia road. it's attracting plenty of attention. cars flowing out. they get a sneak peek there. and three city accidents to update you on. park avenue at west mulberry. and also, east fayette at st. paul street. let's take a live look. not too bad of a drive there at old court road. this traffic report is brought

to you by hyundai. time to check out the all-new 2011 sonata. one of only five to achieve the safety rating. >> more than 42,000 americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year. and more than 83% of them will likely die from it. andrea fujii explains the importance of early detection. how are you? >> how are you, my man? >> 57-year-old jim epier line is a pancreatic cancer survivor. and he may only be alive today by chance. >> doctors were looking for something else and discovered a tumor, the size of a tennis ball, on the head of my pancreas. >> reporter: less than a week later, he had the tumor removed. that was a year and a half ago.

>> i am cancer-free. >> reporter: doctors claim the cancer-free to early detection. >> we don't have the chemo that we'd like or really other treatment. so the key to this is early detection and treatment. >> reporter: mammograms can help detect breast cancer. but there is no early screening tool for pancreatic cancer upon. >> they say look for stomachaches, weight loss, diabetes. and most importantly, a family history of pancreatic cancer. >> the majority of the patients are not candidates for surgery. it has already spread by the time it's diagnosed. if you can save a life, that to me is tremendously meaningfulful. >> jim's life may never be the same. but he says what is most important is he is still

there's city hall tonight. >> not bad. i mean, it's dry for the time being. as it's cloudy out there. but considering the most beautiful weather we've had the last eight to 10 days, which is just spectacular. yes, we have a chance of rain here. rain, across extreme southern southwest virginia. and greensboro to bristol, tennessee. all across portions of tennessee, it's moving generally up the appalachian chain. and as you go further to the southwest, it's even more. most is moving across the southern portion of georgia. the swamp into northern florida. for us, rain moving in. it will be damp the next, let's say, starting late tonight. and probably lasting on and off during the day on tuesday. temperature-wise, we're not going to drop much.

50 degrees. our high was 57. 55 in washington. and 55 down in ocean city. the dew point is getting close to temperature. pretty moist atmosphere is one of the reasons. there will be more fog tonight. particularly to our east and southeast. kind of a damp, low-level cloud cover. probably starting south of washington, maybe to after 10:00. maybe in the d.c. area, if you're heading to a football game over there, probably around 11:00, you might see some drizzle into our region. probably after that, and during the overnight. we'll see rain moving in. out to the west, they had a bit of snow. a lot colder in the higher elevations. during the east, temperatures to about normal, to slightly below average. all of those clouds, here comes the rain. moving into southern virginia and carolinas. and that steady rain moves in overnight. picking up maybe a half inch or maybe as much as an inch of

rain with the system. maybe even a little heavier across west virginia. far western maryland and western sections of virginia. low pressure actually passes to our west. sort of a warm air mass coming in from the atlantic ocean. behind it, winds dry out quickly wednesday and thursday. it will start cooling down by the end of the week. temperatures getting into the low 50s, which is below our normal. which is now down to 57. baytemp at 55. and super small craft tomorrow afternoon on the bay. sunrise, 6:51. set. yeah. 4:51. forecast for tonight, then. later tonight, rain moving in. down around 44. it's not going to drop that much. tomorrow back up into the mid- 50s again today with rain and draiz drizzle. a lot of wet leaves tomorrow night. and they're slippery on the road. be careful. >> bob, thank you. still ahead on eyewitness

5:28. 50 degrees and cloudy. good evening. thank you for staying with eyewitness news. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. campus crime. tonight, an extensive search for suspects in three armed robberies at local college campuses. jessica kartalija is tracking the investigation. it appears to be a quiet day on loyola campus university. but a brazen robbery has students on edge. >> obviously, are we aware of it on campus? yeah. all of us should take into account that something happens. >> sky park is somewhere where other people park. so i try not to park where my car is explode compliewd -- is excluded. >> campus officials say three students were robbed at knife point friday. >> we're increasing foot patrols in the area. we also have closed circuit tv on the area that was involved.

>> on campus, sky eye chopper 13 was overhead minutes after a student walking to her car was robbed at gunpoint. >> the victim then gave the suspect her money and her wallet. >> reporter: police say the suspect got the victim's attention, saying, hey, tiger. she was wearing a towson tigers jacket. and a woman making a deposit at a campus bank was robbed. >> we give a lot of information about how to be safe anywhere. not just loyola, but anywhere they might be going. >> police do not have any suspects in custody. >> officials say the suspect took off with $50, a cell phone and a student's ring. four suspects wanted for an armed robbery in glen burnie are still at large tonight. it happened saturday night at the cinco de mayo grocery store

on crain highway. employees told police they entered and stole money. they fled the scene in a gray suv, driven by a fourth suspect. missing since june. after months of a fruitless investigation, for 8-year-old kyron horman, authorities in oregon have now launched a new search for evidence. vic is in the newsroom with details. >> reporter: they have begun searching the waters of the channel. the search comes just days after kaine horman asked the judge to punish teri horman if she does not answer questions about her stepson. investigators still have not found the one clue that could crack the case. >> this is not a homicide. it's not a kidnapping for hire that we know of or ransom. and the fact is, there is not a discernible crime scene.

>> mary, back to you. >> thank you. police have not named teri horman a suspect in kiron's disappearance. hoping one of the kidnapped children will lead them to her mother, brother, and family friend. police searching for a missing ohio family comb through the park. patrol helicopters flew overhead, as officers used boats to check the lake. >> we still would like to remain a hopeful attitude. >> a s.w.a.t. team rescued 13-year-old sarah maynard. >> i would call her the epitome of bravery. >> police found sarah maynard bound and gagged in hoffman's basement. they arrested him and charged him with kidnapping. sarah is out of the hospital and with other family members

now. she told investigators she last saw her mother and brother saturday. they have yet to find family friend stephanie sprang. the sheriff believes all three might be dead because of of the the amount of blood in the family home. it is 10 miles of hoffman's house. but within walking distance. >> reporter: police say the parents are cooperating with the investigation and that hoffman is the only suspect. a deputy first spoke to him thursday night in the area where they found tina herman's pickup truck. >> we'll try to get the search effort coming down this way. >> reporter: sprang's father helped lead a group of volunteers who helped with the search monday. >> thank you, guys. >> neighbors say hoffman also went to the nearby park. manuel gallegus, wjz eyewitness news remember. >> hoffman, who has a prior conviction in colorado for arson is tentatively scheduled for a bond hearing tuesday afternoon. after a three-week delay, the hearing for the fort hood shooting suspect has come to an

end. the hearing ended after three minutes when defense attorneys presented no evidence. what sanis charged -- hasan is charged with 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder. military officials have not said yet if i -- if they will seek the death penalty if the case goes to trial. a man accused of killing chandra levy will not take the stand in his own defense. ingmar guandique said he does not plan to take the stand in has own defense. closing arguments is scheduled for tuesday. chandra levy's dips -- disappearance created buzz when she was linked to then- congressman condit from california. captain mike perry has more for us. >> reporter: it's not clear whether this is the penitentiary involved or the city jail. but this is the 900 block of

forest street. we know at least one person, an adult male, has been suffering stab wounds. the others here, it is not clear how significantly they were injured or whether they were injured sult -- as a result of a fight inside. but you're seeing city medics sort of juxtaposing here so they can get out and get to a local hospital. looks like the whole prison system here into downtown is on lockdown. and all of the guards are at their posts outside. we'll continue to keep you updated if we get more information on this. but looks like right now, they had some sort of altercation at the maryland penitentiary. >> we'll continue to follow it. no delay in the ethics trial of a powerful congressman. charlie rangel walked out of a trial in washington. he's mad that the committee won't give him more time to find a lawyer. they have accused him of several ethics violations,

including not paying taxes on a vacation home. as inez feray reports for wjz, winners from the midterm elections are in d.c., learning the ropes while current lawmakers are trying to make progress in lame duck session. >> the house will be in order. >> reporter: congress is back for a lame duck session. and one of the biggest issues is tax cuts. democrats want the bush-era cuts. members of the tea party rallied outside the capital. >> there must be no compromise on preventing a tax increase on any american. >> president obama plans to talk taxes with leaders from both parties later this week. and on his way back from asia, he sounded willing to listen to republicans. >> i want to hear from them how strongly they feel about it. particularly given that they're also saying that they want to control the deficit spending. >> reporter: democrats would

like to get a tax deal done before they new congress gets in january. that they lose their majority. new congress mcs are in-- congress members are in did. c. this week. including two car dealers, a funeral home director and a pizzeria owner. >> after the '08 election, we had two freshmen republican senators. obviously, i'm pretty excited to be sitting here with 13. >> reporter: in january, congress will have more than 100 new members. more than one-third have never held elective office before. ines feray, wjz eyewitness news. andy harris was in washington, d.c. today to take place in activity. tax time is still five months away. but there are new rules for people who prepare your taxes. they now have to register with the irs before they can fill out any returns. tax preparers who aren't cpas or lawyers will have to pass a

resort. last month, a summit is scheduled to be held. at first, it was feared the blasts might be related or drug cartel related. >> it is a sad event that the possibility that it was an attack has been discarded as we said from the beginning. where the reports from the hospital said, the wounds might be from shrapnel. they are not. >> reporter: investigators later thought that cooking gas might be to blame. but it now appears the blast was caused by an accumulation of gas from a nearby swamp. pretty articla, for cbs news. one of the men kelled in the blast was at the resort for his honeymoon. caught in an inferno. dozens killed in an apartment fire. at least 42 people have already died. thick, black smoke prevented helicopters from being trapped on the roof. the building was being renovated when the scaffolding
