missing family mystery. a teen kidnapped, her family disappears, what happened when the only suspect appeared in court. hello, everyone. this is what people are talking about. there are fears that a missing family is dead. police are still searching a park just a stone's throw away from where the suspect lives. and we go to ohio where that man appeared in court a short time ago. >> reporter: the search dogs and teams looked for signs of the family in a heavily wooded area near kenyon college. they collected what may be a sock, evidence, along a trail. >> we run this path and it is

scary to think that someone would do something like that. >> reporter: the trail is close to where they found the missing mother's truck on thursday and first questioned the suspect, matthew hoffman. he appeared in court through a video hookup at the jail with a public defender he did not enter a plea. bond was set at $1 million. he was restrained in a suicide gown. >> until a professional says otherwise, we put him in the suicide gown. >> reporter: he is charged with kidnapping sarah maynard. she was rescued on sunday but her family members and a family friend have not been seen since last wednesday. investigators have little hope of finding them alive. residents are looking for anything out of the ordinary that may help police, many have joined in the searchs. >> knowing that someone is missing and knowing it could be

my kids. >> reporter: she moved to ohio after serving six years in prison for setting fire to this town house in colorado. he has not spoke within investigators since he was given an attorney. more charges are expected. >> the public defender told the court he works as a tree trimmer but that he was currently unemployed. corruption scandal rocking maryland. details in the mess of an investigation that made headlines with the arrest of the prince george's executive. we have more on the folding case. >> reporter: 11 aof the rests have been made and -- 11 arrests have been made and accounts seized t started with jack johnson and his wife. they are accused of trying to destroy evidence and taking bribes. as we told you, a couple who owned this howard county home were arrested as part of the investigation yesterday. they own several stores and the

u.s. attorney accuses them of paying bribes. they appeared in court a short time ago. they were being squeezed by johnson to pay the bribes. >> thank you. three police officers were arrested as part of the probe yesterday. and we're following the complex story. we'll have the latest coming up at 5:00. we have breaking news now, baltimore city police have found a number of exotic animals stole from a wildlife center. it has been broken into twice in days. and someone taking turtles and other creatures. police have confirmed that they found all of the animals unharmed at a house in west baltimore. we're following the story. we'll have the latest for you at 5:00. a line of showers is moving through the region. a look outside how much longer will it last. and bernadette woods is in the weather center tracking the system. >> the rain moved in overnight

heroic. the commander-in-chief presented him with the medal of honor, the highest military award. he is the first living service member from the iraq and afghanistan wars to receive it. >> you charged forward through extreme enemy fire embodying the war that says i will never leave a fallen comrade. >> it was a teen leader in the valley. in october of 2007 the taliban ambushed the squad. and rushed into the enemy fire before a soldier backed a cover. he rescued sergeant joshua brennan who was being carried away by the taliban fighters. >> in the days leading up to the ceremony honoring him, the staff sergeant told his loved ones that some of them would have to stay home. >> he asked our family members to understand that he wants his

men there. there is only so many that can fit in the room, he wanted his guys there. >> everyone hails him as a hero for his bravery in battle n an interview, the staff sergeant called himself a mediocre soldier. >> i don't think that i did anything that anyone else that i was with would not have done. >> now he returns to duty at a u.s. army base in italy. in washington, joel brown wjz news. >> seven soldiers who fought and in iraq have been given the medal of honor. a bomb scare at a baltimore county high school. and crews are on the scene at pikesville high, a package was found under a classroom. you can see the bomb squad used a robot. students who use that trailer were moved to another classroom. >> it is popular but the scene of trouble. now a loweller -- roller rink is shutting its doors.

we're following the story from the newsroom. >> and skate works lost the permit to operate and has now closed for good. the permit was revoked after a girl was aresulted in a storage room in august. it had been in trouble before that after the police were called to deal with rowdy crowds and fights. the owners have filed chapter 7 bankruptcy which is liquidation with $577,000 in debt. back to you. >> thank you. the suspects charged with assaulting the girl go on trial next year six the rain slowing the rush to get home down? let's find out now. >> reporter: no matter how you say it, it is slow out there. we have so many accidents, we do not have time to mention them. and 83 southbound at guildford and an accident with a backup to north avenue. an accident on the inner loop. that is on the right shoulder.

two accidents on 295 and the northbound lanes. 295 and route 100. ridge roads and engle side, too many accidents to mention. west 41st at 40th is one. and accident in hanover and anne arundel boulevard. another in glen burnie. one more on 50 east bound. that's on the ramp to ritchie highway. there are the drive times. you can see in the 20s and the 30s. slow on the roads. we can take a look at 95 north of 195. delays are evident there. we had an accident at 195 that's clear. there is a look at the southwest side of the beltway. very wet there. the traffic report by subway. come in and get the new breakfast melts. they are hot and goodness like the new subway melt or bmt.

a wild scene in minnesota

after an apartment in a bar goes up in flames. this was the scene last night. firefighters rushed to the apartment to find it engulfed in flames. one man had to be rescued but no one else was seriously hurt. no word on the cause. it is a scary reminder not to drink and drive. it started as a normal traffic stop but it take as wild turn in california and as cc butler explains, police got it all on camera. >> you are looking at dash cam video. when the officers pulled over the driver of this black car, stopped for driving under the influence. the driver, a 42-year-old, put the car in reverse before getting out. then he realized what he did. he jumped back into the car and it flew forward into a water and air dispenser causing the line to rupture. the driver and passenger were

in the car. employees say after it ran into the pump, water was everywhere and they say that it took the crews 24 hours to restore water to the gas station. a reminder of when not to get behind the wheel. >> of course the driver is now facing dui charges. a rough day on wall street as worries mounted about inflation in asia. the dow was down all day long. here is a look at the closing numbers, down 179, sean sep -- s&p down. and let's go to new york where we have the money watch update. >> reporter: it was a tough day for stocks. investors are worried about inflation in asia and the possibility that the economy may need a bail out. that overshadowed a better than expected report. the giant's profits jumped more than 9% and mostly because of

cost cutting and sales overseas. the soaring gas prices pushed the wholesale prices higher in october but there was little sign of inflation since the cost of food, cars and computers all fell. home builders in the u.s. are looking ahead to bring. and builders are feeling more optimistic about the prospect for a up tick and the worst summer for the market in a decade. beatles are online. apple has started selling music from the fab four on the itunes service. they have not allowed songs to be purchased until now because of a long running trademark battle between the old management company and apple. the songs will sell for 1.29, albums to be down loaded for 12.99. they are one of the top sellers even though they broke up nearly 40 years ago. that's your money watch. for more go to cbs money watch.

the fbi calls him the geezer bandit and he was robbing banks all over southern california until last week when he hit a bank in bakers field. the crime started in august of 2009 with a robbery in san diego. he committed ten robberies and before moving to river side in june of this year. the fbi says he has been pulling off all the robberies in the same way he did in bakers field. >> during the robbery, the geezer bandit went into the bank, presented -- presented a note, made a demand for cash to the teller and displayed a weapon and threatened the teller with a weapon. >> he was a folk hero. he has a painful on facebook with 2000 -- a page on facebook. the description calls him a white man in his 60s or early 70s. but there is one nagging question about the geezer, what if he is not.

>> our agents and taskforce officers are giving every consideration to the fact that he may be younger, that he may be wearing a mask. >> he may not be one at all, but police are not amused. they stress he is armed and dangerous. in los angeles, sandra hughes, wjz news. >> the fbi is offering a reward in the case. a scare on campus. buildings at a college were evacuated. we have the latest on the threat. >> they were rushed out of four buildings on ohio state university, bomb threats were e- mailed into the fbi headquarters in washington saying the buildings including the library were specifically targeted. students and faculty members were alerted and police searched the building but did not find anything suspicious. officials and the fbi did not specify the nature of the threat saying they were taking it seriously. >> thank you very much. 56,000 students attend ohio

state university. we're learning about a fight in prison that left five people stabbed. there was a fight in the metropolitan transition center that's a wing of the state prison. they were all hospitalised with non-life threatening injuries. no officers were involved. the fate of the man who is accused of killing charlotte charlotte is in the -- chandra lev. why is in the hands of a jury. the immigrant is accused of murdering the washington intern ten years ago. her disappearance created a sensation when she was linked with the then congressman gary condit. a long-serving member of congress, guilty of ethics charges. but he will not step down. now the house of representatives will determine his punishment. >> count 11, violation of the code... >> reporter: the panel

announced the verdict against charles rangele. >> we found a conviction by clear and convincing evidence. >> reporter: the veteran was found guilty on 11 counts of breaking the rules, including failing to disclose at least $600,000 in assets and income, failing to report rental income to the irs and soliciting donations from foundations and businesses that could benefit from his vote in congress. >> we have tried to act with fairness, led only by the facts and the law. >> the 80-year-old did not attend the hearing but made a brief appearance on monday. he said he had run out of money to fight the case and needed more time to set up a defense fund and hire a lawyer. >> since i don't have counsel to advise me, i'm going to have to excuse myself. >> he had been one of the influential members of the house serving 20 terms in congress. voters in his district reelected him two weeks ago,

identity. a hero dog who saved soldiers from a suicide bomber in afghanistan is put down by mistake. >> whats to the dog mean to you they have asked everything. >> reporter: toriry young'sing too was put down this morning by accident. a worker didn't the rules. target was put down instead of another dog. >> for her to be ripped out of our lives like this, there are no words to describe it. >> saturday he was released to learn that target was picked up about by an animal control officer and at the county animal care and control center. but when he went to pick her up this morning, she was already dead. the officer who put target down told him the dog she put down could not be his pet. >> was she a stray?
