arrests. >> reporter: a rapidly unfolding burglary investigation led police to this townhome on the 5,000 block of clifton avenue in west baltimore. investigators say a couple who lived there called 911 after they went home to discover 10 exotic animals inside. >> it's like a movie. you got everybody standing on their doorstep, watching as they carry stuff away. >> crews carry stuff back to them. worried they might die. >> they need specific heating, lighting. specific foods. if they don't, they're going to become sick again and not make it. >> reporter: police say over the weekend, someone snatched up several large hissing cockroaches. five water turtles, an iguana, and five geckos. and two baby chameleons like this one were taken. >> i can't believe it.

it was amazing. i mean, awful. >> reporter: the preserve has been a staple for youth, since orioles legend eddie murray founded it 22 years ago. he wanted kids to learn about the animals. and now, they are glad a piece of it is back. >> nothing sacred anymore. these are so that your kids and uncles and cousins can come and look at this stuff and learn. >> reporter: police are not saying how old these juveniles are or their relationship. but now, they are saying charges for them are pending. we're live in baltimore city. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> we'll continue to follow it, then. police say the suspects entered through an unlocked window. they are reviewing fingerprints at this time. seconds from death. a woman drives in an ocean city canal. and a quick-thinking samaritan jumped into action. a tough choice for some was an easy decision for a restaurant employee. he dove into a bayside canal to

save a woman from her car. taylor drove her are -- car straight into the water last night. after several attempts, he was able to break the car's back window, allowing vander hood to escape. one minute after i got her out of the car, the car sank. she would have been dead. i'm glad she's alive. i wonder if she realizes just how close to death she came. ocean city police say after vander hook was rescued, she left the scene before being found at a bus stop. she now faces dui charges. >> police plan to recognize sullivan with their highest civilian award for outstanding service. a gruesome find. the discovery of a body prompts an investigation inside howard county. police found a body off of westbound i-70. state police are only saying the body was an adult. and it was inside a box. no other details have been released. authorities are now waiting for an autopsy report.

squeezed for cash tonight. the attorney for a howard county couple, is speaking about their ties to prince george's county executive jack johnson. wjz stays on this story live at federal court in prince george's county. mike hellgren has the latest development for us in this scandal. mike? >> reporter: thethe allegations are damaging. government lawyers say they paid big bribes to prince george's county officials for their businesses. and they caught it all on wire tap. >> reporter: federal authorities revealed new information about their indictment of amreek and ra vinda melib. the feds searched their mansion in clarksville, where wjz has learned they found $400,000 in cash in a closet. both face conspiracy and extortion charges, in connection to the corruption investigation, that has already led to the arrest of jack johnson and his wife. family members spoke to wjz about the ordeal. >> is it difficult for you to see her if through this?

>> i have no comment. she's my sister, of course it's difficult. no comment. >> reporter: so who are the melibs, and what their connection to johnson? they lived in india, moving to the u.s., building up a small empire of liquor stores n. prince george's county, they owned tick tock liquors. officials say they bribed to get their license. >> mr. johnson is the county executive. and the mehlies are business people. >> reporter: they found they contributed to jack johnson's campaign. >> the allegation is public officials. and we know what happened. >> reporter: christian went on to say the mehlies know johnson personally. and the county executive squeezed johnson.

>> it's a sad day for all of us. >> reporter: and a judge just ordered ravinda melee detained, saying she was a flight risk. and also, we found that their corporation donated to rashin baker who will replace mr. johnson. >> lots of twists and turns to this, mike. thank you. new at 6:00, wjz speaks to one of mehlie's close friends and business partners. what he's telling us about them and the indictment. and stay with us for more on the charges and the investigation. going to wjz.com. a teenager sexually abused. now, the 36-year-old suspect in the case pleads guilty in carroll county. thi nguyen pled guilt to fourth degree sex offense. prosecutors say from january to july 2009, she had sexual

conduct with a teenage boy. she cannot have any conduct with the victim. -- contact with the victim. hundreds of heart patients could have undergone problems. wjz is live. adam may has details of this new push. >> reporter: yes, this afternoon, a house committee heard from doctors, hospitals, and state health officials on what they can do to try to increase patient safety. >> reporter: the kickback scandal, involving st. joseph's medical center, billing the government for unnecessary stent surgeries, placed in patients to weaken arteries, led to a $22 million. >> we very strongly want those outwires to be evident. >> he testified on behalf of two cardiology groups. he told his house committee that his fellow doctors favor some sort of new legislation to repair patient trust. >> i think merlin can really

take the lead with their legislation here, to try to move forward with very strong, pure processes. with good, external oversight. >> reporter: they also want to include reforms that improve communication between various oversight agencies. >> what exactly is the goal here for the people of maryland. >> i think the goal is to find that balance to make sure people have access to needed, appropriate, and affordable healthcare. and at the same time, they are not receiving services that they ought not to. because there are financial and other services for the provider. >> he also told me that he hopes any new legislation would have the support of doctors and hospitals. they certainly have a while to try to hammer out these new laws. next session starts january 12th. last year, state lawmakers also pass the the law that tackles medical fraud. a big drop on wall street. concerns over inflation in asia, caused the dow to plunge.

at one point, it was below the 11,000 mark. here's a look at the closing numbers. dow was down 178. s&p down 19. nasdaq off 44. a damp tuesday around maryland tonight. clouds are lingering. when will things dry out? bob turk and meteorologist bernadette woods are tracking live doppler radar. we'll start with bob. >> particularly in the baltimore area. take a look at radar. you can see all of this stuff moving in from the south and southwest. still more stuff south of washington, on the 95 corridor. we still have to deal with this through late this evening. heavier batch east of the city. west of columbia, montgomery and frederick county, not much going on. heaviest rain there, from galena. that's going to move into delaware shortly. to the west of us, much lighter rain activity.

very, very spotty. we'll be dealing with this, probably until at least 9:00, 10:00 tonight. bernadette woods has a look at what we can expect for our wednesday and beyond. bernadette? >> reporter: the storm is going to stick around until early tomorrow morning. when it starts to pull out of here tomorrow, no winds kick up. and winds will turn around to the west. and we'll have wind gusts. even further west, we have wind advisories that go into effect in the overnight hours and will continue through most of tomorrow. the thing is, these winds will bring in dryer and eventually cooler air. and we'll have the forecast shortly. right now, back inside. >> thank you, bernadette. a name change for maryland institution. school officials at the college of notre dame, held a pep rally to announce a new name for the school. starting next fall, it will be known as notre dame university. you can see they spelled out the name on the t-shirt.

a young musician collapses and dies at the peabody institute. the teen had such promise. >> this is a look at the marching band as a drum major. students and teachers there are grieving today. casey butler had been one of their star physicians. butler had died suddenly during

a college class. >> i have spoken some peabody professors. and they are just as shocked as we are. she did -- definitely had a very promising future in music, whatever path she would want to take. and her passing is troubling and sudden. >> the high school music students who know casey met this morning to discuss her death. and counseling is being offered. the kids are so -- it's such a family. and they have been upset as have i. >> casey chose the basoon, even though her band director says it is not an easy instrument. but she enjoyed the challenge and would tutor younger people. ♪ [ music ] >> the choir director listens to an audio director. a company by the choir she was

just a $1.99 a month at your baltimore hyundai dealer. well, we might tend to forget there are many rural areas of maryland that are hard to get to with a car. as mike schuh reports, state police have to literally pluck the victims with their trees out of the chopper. these are pictures hovering. >> this person fell approximately 30 feet, between sliding and falling. >> broken bones and a head wound. it's too remote and dangerous to carry the 17-year-old out. what they're going to do is similar to rescue this spring. the victim is hoisted up to the police chopper, taken to another chopper, and flown to shock trauma. sergeant mike perkins took those pictures. >> this is out of the ordinary. we only do probably 20 or 30 of these a year. compared to thousands of

medivacs we do a year. >> a spot they earned by hours of training just for this scenario. but -- >> these are few and far between. so you might think the adrenaline is flowing. not so. when you get involved with this, you go into training mode. and everybody is like, it's exactly the way we trained to do it. so i hate to disappoint. >> and there will be no doubt. due to patient confidentiality laws, the condition of that 17-year-old is not available. we have rain still in the region. take a look at radar. looks like it could probably stay wet, at least probably until about 9:00 or 10:00 tonight.

well, as promised. kind of a wet tuesday. we haven't seen that much rain. we haven't seen anything like, you know, flooding or anything like that. so far, at the airport, you've had about a third of an inch of rain. take a look at radar. there is more to come, down to the south. still a batch from laredo. south of washington, we'll take a look around the baltimore region now. very light stuff going on. the heaviest, just moved through the area a little while ago. south of the city, a little solid batch from southern baltimore county to the annapolis area. it's going to move through the next 30 minutes. west of us and northwest of us, it's quiet for the time being. on the eastern shore, that's where the heaviest rain was. now it's moving quickly off to the north and northeast. some breaks in there. and not a whole lot going on

there. to the west of us, also some breaks. particularly over carroll, and frederick and montgomery county. but still decent rain. some of these showers will continue to head off to the east and northeast. so we're not done with all of the rain yet. probably continuing on and off until maybe about 10:00 tonight. and then things will clear out. but tomorrow, once it clears out, we have a very windy day shaping up. we could see wind gusts tomorrow up to maybe as high as 40 miles an hour. it will dry things out quickly. warmed up to 60, washington. 58, pax river. 61 in easton. we're at 55. temperatures tonight, actually may go up a couple of degrees before they start cooling down. but not until tomorrow afternoon. high actually may consider -- occur around noontime tomorrow. right now, we've got a wind out of the east, off the atlantic ocean, keeps us in that moisture, -- moist, moist flow in the atlantic ocean. but tomorrow, once this low pressure that has developed

across the southern mississippi valley, passes to our west, it will get strong up to ontario. and behind it, winds go back to the northwest. dries things out quickly. and call this the dry spot. then there's heavy showers. later tonight, it might see one brief heavy shower. and then things will clear out, late, late tonight. as the front continues to move through the region. you can see how widespread the range is from boston through portions of indiana. it's a pretty widespread event, as far as rain goes. that low pressure, passing to our west. front goes through. and then we dry out with windy conditions. now, on thursday, a weak area of low pressure passes to our south. probably give us some clouds. it will still be mild wednesday. but thursday, the cooler air begins to move in. and we're talking about temperatures where they were today. but a lot dryer. by the end of the week, we might even see some frost tonight. and a gale warning for wednesday. on the bay. with the bay temp now around 53

it is 5:29. 55 degrees, with just some light rain out there right now. from sky eye chopper 13. good evening, everybody. thanks for staying with wjz's eyewitness news. here's some of the stories people are talking about tonight. it has been more than a year since a crash crippled a baltimore county woman. today, in federal court, a guilty plea from the woman who was drunk at the wheel. derek valcourt speaks exclusively about the victim of the crash and the drunk driver she blames. >> reporter: it is just what they have been waiting 13 months for. and it's a story you'll only see on wjz. >> reporter: the world cup soccer tournament came and went

without rising soccer star charlie davies. what started out as a fun night out with two friends, ended with a drunk driving crash that split this suv into pieces, left davies with crippling injuries and killed 22-year-old ashley roberta, who attended baltimore's mercy high school and grew up at her parents home in phoenix, maryland. >> that night changed her life forever. >> reporter: chandra berta will never forget that night. early that morning, her daughter and davies were riding with this woman, maria espinoza of howard county. the three had just left south of the george washington parkway, when a drunk espinoza lost controlof her suv, slammed into a guardrail, mangling davies' body, and killing another. >> what has this done to your family. >> the pain is so great, we can't even explain it by words.

the pain is so great. and it was caused by maria espinoza driving drunk. >> reporter: espinoza, barely injured. her blood alcohol at .13. today, she pled guilty to involuntary manslaughter, while maiming someone while driving intoxicated. >> i think it will help a little bit. knowing that maybe it will save someone else. they'll think twice before they'll get into a car after they have been drinking. >> reporter: espinoza faces up to eight years in prison and $250,000 in fines when she is sentenced by the judge on february 18th. in alexandria, virginia, derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> they are considering filing civil lawsuits against the driver. a terrifying turn in anne arundel county. police say the woman parked outside. as she got out of her car, a man put something against the

back of her head. she offered her purse. anyone with information is asked to call police. a bone fragment is found. could it belong to natalee holloway? >> reporter: tourists found a human jawbone on a beach in aruba. now tonight, dutch forensic experts are testing to see if it belongs to natalee holloway. it brushed up in one of the areas by joran van der sloot in a series of confessions he later rescinded. she was last seen with van der sloot. experts will first establish whether the bone is human before then comparing it to dna to see if it was holloway's. >> van der sloot is in prison in peru, charged with killing stephany flores. somebody e-mailed bomb threats. it involved the campus library, as well as three laboratory

buildings. the initial search turned up nothing out of the ordinary. information of the threats has not yet been disclosed. at this time, university officials do not know why the four buildings were targeted. closing arguments are wrapping up in the murder trial of washington intern chandra levy. they have asked to convict ingmar guandique for the 2001 murder. earlier in the trial, the inmate testified that guandique confided to him that he had, in fact, killed levy. dna evidence was never found to link guandique to the crime, though. the only suspect in the disappearance of an ohio family appears in court today. the three family members are still missing. manuel gallegus has the latest for wjz from mount vernon, ohio. search dogs and rescue teams look for signs of a missing ohio family. investigators collected what looked like a sock, possibly evidence, along a popular

trail. >> me and my friends always run this path. and it's scare to think that somebody would do something like that. >> reporter: the trail is close to where police found the missing mother's pickup truck last thursday. and first questioned the suspect, matthew hoffman. hoffman appeared in court tuesday, through a video hookup at the jail. sitting with the public defender, he did not enter a plea. the judge set his bond at $1 million. he was restrained in what guards call a suicide gown. >> until a mental health professional says otherwise, we put him in the suicide gown. >> reporter: the 30-year-old is charged with kidnapping 13-year- old sarah maynard. police rescued the teenager from hoffman's basement sunday. but her brother cody, mother tina herman, and family friend haven't seen them since thursday. >> residents are looking for anything out of the ordinary that might help police. many have joined in the daily

searches. >> knowing that somebody is missing and knowing it could be my kids. >> reporter: hoffman moved to ohio in 2007, after serving six years in prison for setting fire to this townhouse in colorado. he hasn't spoken with investigators since he was given an attorney. but police say more charges are expected. manuel gallegus, cbs news, mount vernon, ohio. hoffman is currently under suicide watch. a house panel has found new york democrat charlie rangel guilty of 11 counts of financial and fundraising misconduct. the 80-year-old walked out of his ethics trial monday, after telling the panel he had no money to pay for a lawyer. rangel will now face a house vote, denouncing his conduct, but will most likely remain in office. he was reelected this month, with 80% of the vote. the first living service member from the wars in afghanistan and iraq have received the nation's highest military honor today. joel brown reports for wjz from washington. >> reporter: it was a heroes

welcome at the white house. for an army staff sergeant who insists he's done nothing heroic. the commander in chief presented salvatore giunta, with the medal of honor, the nation's highest military award. he's the first living service member from the iraq and afghanistan wars to receive it. >> you charged forward through extreme enemy fire, embodying the warrior ethos that says, i will never leave a fallen comrade. >> reporter: giuntas was in october of 2007. the taliban ambushed his squad. giunta rushed into fire. back to cover. then he rescued sergeant nguyen, who was being carried away by two taliban fighters. he later died from his injuries. >> leading up to the ceremony, honoring him at the white house. staff sergeant giunta said that

some of them would have to call. >> he has asked our family members to please understand that he realm want -- really wants his men there. >> everyone, from his parents to the president, hails him as a hero, for his bravery in battle. but in an interview with 60 minutes, the staff sergeant called himself a mediocre soldier. >> i don't think that i did anything that anyone else that i was with wouldn't have done. >> reporter: now, staff sergeant giunta returns to duty at a u.s. army base in italy. in washington, joel brown, wjz eyewitness news. >> in all nine of the medals of honor awarded previously for actions since the vietnam war have gone to members of the military killed in action, including three awarded by president obama. baltimore residents can now travel to more destinations for as little as a dollar. the mega bucks company is adding daily service to 10

>> probably over $1,000. >> reporter: the federal trade commission is cracking down on work-at-home scams, offering tips on the web, including a warning for a man once convicted of taking advantage of desperate job seekers. >> there was ridiculous money being made. you could take down $20 million in 8 months. >> reporter: christine durst screens up to 5,000 job leads on her site. >> for every 62 leads we look at, 61 of them are scams. and only one of them is legitimate. >> reporter: be suspicious if they charge a fee for information. or if the ad says no experience necessary. and if the pay is unbelievably high, don't believe it. katherine joseph admits she should have known better. >> there was that carrot in front of me that i keep chasing after. >> reporter: experts say one of the oldest rules is the best, if it sounds too good to be
