>> and i'm denise koch. here's what people are talking about tonight. >> hidden cash, bribes and corruption. it sounds like a political thriller. but it's playing out now in prince george's county. mike hellgren has more on what a howard county couple has. >> reporter: the indictments show how wide-ranging this investigation is. now, government lawyers tell us that the connection involves bribery. and they've got a lot of damaging evidence. most of it comes from wire taps. >> reporter: federal authorities revealed new information about their indictment of amreek and ravinda melee. the feds searched their mansion in clarksville, where investigators said they found $400,000 in cash in a closet. both face conspiracy and extortion charges in connection with a corruption charge that

has already led to the arrest of jack johnson and his wife. federal authorities spoke to wjz about the ordeal. >> is it difficult for you to see her go through this? >> she is my sister. of course, it's difficult. but no comment. they are very hard working people. >> reporter: who are the melees? and what are their connections to johnson? they grew up in india, and moved to the u.s. for years now, building a small empire of businesses. >> as a human being, very good, honest and true. >> in prince george's county, they own tick tock liquors. the feds say they bribed some without paying taxes on them. >> mr. johnson is the county executive. and the melees are business people. i think he knows quite a few of the business people. >> they contributed to jack johnson's campaign. >> at all any connection to jack johnson? >> well, that's the allegation.

>> he went on to say the melees know johnson personally. >> they squeezed them to paying bribes. >> if what they said is true, it will obviously be problematic. and a judge ordered ravinda melee held today. the federal government want toss confiscate millions of dollars in property from the couple. reporting live at the federal courthouse, in prince george's county, mike hellgren, wjz eyewitness news. campaign finance records show the melees' company, also contributed $1500 to baker, who will replace johnson as county executive. be sure to stay with wjz and wjz.com for complete coverage of the corruption scandal. out of a job, a baltimore police officer fired after he was arrested. keith nolan looked up information in a police database for a suspected drug dealer. he had only been a cop for about a year. another officer was also suspended as part of the investigation. shut down.

a popular roller skating rink, closed for good. mare sein the newsroom -- mary is in the newsroom to tell us why skateworks closed. >> the roller rink recently lost has permit. the place is popular. but also the site of trouble over the years. the rink lost its placement after a 12-year-old girl claims she was gang-raped. before that, police were called out several times to deal with rowdy crowds. they also filed for bankruptcy. and the place is padlocked now. denise? >> thank you, mary. one of the suspects charged with raping that girl goes on trial next year. inappropriate relationship. an eldersburg woman is electric looking at prisknow-- is looking at prison time for having sex with a teen boy. she admitted to having sex with the boy. nguyen's couple found pictures and text messages. nguyen met the boy because she works with his mother. she will be sentenced in

february. a bizarre case. weijia jiang is live at the carrie murray nature center. are police close to catching these thieves? do you know? >> reporter: police are questioning two juveniles. but they have not made any arrests. now, what an emotional day it has been for everyone here. earlier, they were certain those animals would all die. now they are here and healthy. a rapidly unfolding burglary investigation led police to this home in the 5,000 block of west baltimore. investigators say a couple who lived there called 911 after they went home to discover 10 exotic animals inside. the very ones reported stolen from the carrie murray nature center, located just a mile away. >> it's like a movie. you got everybody standing on their doorstep, watching as they carry stuff away, like it's confidential. >> reporter: crews transported the animals back quickly. eager to care for them. worried they might die. >> they might need specific heating, lighting.

specific foods. and if they're not given the foods, they are going to become sick again and may not make it. >> reporter: police are investigating two juveniles they found at the house with two break-ins. they say over the weekend, someone snatched up several hissing cockroaches, water snakes and two geckos. and monday night, it was two baby chameleons like this one that were taken. police also recovered two backpacks and bags of clothing report -- reported missing. >> i can't believe it. it's amazing. awful. >> eddie murray, oriole legend, funded the center 27 years ago. now, park administrators are relieved a piece of that is back. >> nothing is sacred. you can't have anything nice anymore. these are so that your family and your kids and your cousins and your uncles can come and look at this stuff and learn. >> now, police say charges for both juveniles are pending. the director says this is not the first time kids have broken in and tampered with the animals. we are live in west baltimore

tonight. weijia jiang, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you very much, weijia. we will, of course, stay on top of this case. we'll let you know as soon as they charge the thieves. breaking news now. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene of the accident in baltimore. >> we are in southwest baltimore, vic. this is lombard and schroeder. with apparently a child struck right in the middle of lombard street in the middle of the block. police are on the scene. paramedics are tending to the child. apparently, the car that did strike the child remained at the scene. police are conducting the investigation. and as you can see, both lanes, east and westbound lombard, right at schroeder are close as police continue their investigation. >> thank you very much, captain mike perry. it's a risky surgery. turns out, it may not even be necessary. adam may explains what is being done to stop what some call a rush to the operating room. adam? >> reporter: well, vic, today, the house of delegates began looking into the possibility of new laws that would crack down

on unneeded surgeries and increase patient safety. >> reporter: the kickback scandal, involving st. joseph's medical center, billing for unnecessary surgeries, just led to a $22 million last week. and now hearings this week. >> we very strongly want those to be dealt with. >> he testified on behalf of two groups. he told a house committee that has fellow doctors favor some sort of new legislation to repair patient trust. >> i think merlin can really take the lead with their legislation here -- maryland can take the load her with new legislation. with good, external oversight. >> reporter: state health officials also want stronger legislation to include reforms that improve communication between various oversight agencies. >> what exactly is the goal here for the people of maryland? >> i think the goal is to find that bell to make sure people

confrontation, harris asked when his government subsidized health benefits kick in. sources say he got upset when he found out he doesn't get the benefits until 30 days after he's sworn in. a critical vote, just hours away, as baltimore teachers get ready to vote again on a controversial new contract. wjz political reporter pat warren has the new pressure being put on teachers to say yes. outside the baltimore teachers union headquarters, these teachers let it be known they plan to vote against the tentative agreement reached between the union and school system. >> we say the union members are against the contract. >> what's the rush? >> mayor stephanie rawlings- blake is running this video on you tube, urging teachers to vote for the new contract. >> a quiet storm of education transformation is happening right here in baltimore. >> reporter: the mayor calls it a quiet storm. but for a group whose function

[ ding ] a howard county man, blinding a police officer, is held in court today. the officer who lost all vision in his left eye, addressed the courtroom today with an impact statement delivered by his wife. >> reporter: in may, sheriff's deputies respond to a call for an officer in distress, in joppa. >> deputies arrived at the scene. found an off-duty baltimore city officer who was bleeding

profusely from the head. >> reporter: 33-year-old jermaine cook, a 17-year veteran with city police, says he was on his way home when 20- year-old james kim bel fragged -- kim bel flagged him down, accused him of speeding, then hit him with a beer mug, while shouting racial slurs. >> i was struck with a bottle. and i'm a police detective. >> okay. for what agency? >> baltimore city police, ma'am. . [ indiscernible ] >> reporter: in a harford county courtroom, a statement read by officer cook's wife, compared what happened to his eye, to, quote, placing a grape in a bag, cutting it and mashing it flat. after four surgeries, officer cook lost vision in his left eye and won't be able to perform duties as an officer. in his sentencing hearing, defense attorney david henninger said kim bel didn't mean to hurt cook. saying, quote, i don't think anyone could call james a moon person. he's not the criminal type.

dwreasesing the courtroom and-- addressing the courtroom and officer cook, kimbel said i wish i could trade places with him. kim bel was sentenced. >> in his impact statement, deputy cook said that the entire incident has been very difficult on his son. deputy cook's first wife, the little boy's mother, was killed on 9/11 in new york. and now, another violent incident, involving a parent. in harford county, i'm jessica kartalija, wjz eyewitness news. >> well, james kimball who is now 21, showed little reaction when his sentence was read. his stepfather got up and left the courtroom. road worker found the body inside a box this morning near braddock mountain. that box was in a wooded embankment off the side of the road. police have not yet identified the man's remains, but they're treating his death as a homicide. imagine, vividly

a drippy, dreary good day to stay in bed kind of day to be sure. most of the rain hasn't been all that heavy. it's kind of scattered. and we'll still deal with it throughout the evening hours. you can see the bulk of it, east of us and actually west of us. here in the city now, it's pretty quiet. a little batch sliding off to the east. heavier, south of anal napolis. and it's very quiet. and will probably stay that way for a while. heaviest rain, steady rain. down through cambridge and down through the ocean city area. that's also moving up toward delaware. west of us, scattered rain all over the place. most of it is moving from southwest to the northeast. just west of the city. looks like that's where we'll be seeing the rain yet this evening. hereof in the city, if you look toward d.c., there's not a whole lot here.

we're not done with the rain. but most of the heavy stuff is passing us by. d.c. is up to 61. much cooler. 60 in ocean city. the winds continue to bring this moisture in from the atlantic ocean. low-level moisture. a lot of low clouds. and as you know, we've seen rain on or off. we've only had about 35/100ths of an inch of rain. not that much. to the west, it's been heavier. low pressure to the north of georgia. probably passing pittsburgh late tonight. and there are heavier showers going through west virginia. a little skinny line going through there. that's thundershower activity. might move into extreme western maryland. for our region, we'll stillhave rain to the south. looking at occasional rain. dry air coming in right behind it. and that means it will get

quite windy. as that increases on thursday. a weak little area of low pressure with clouds but no precipitation by the end of the week. gusts up to 35 knots and a much dryer day coming up tomorrow night. rain ending. it will dry out very quickly tomorrow, with winds up to 30, 35 miles an hour. up to 62. they'll start cooling off and drying off. and temperatures start falling by late in the afternoon. it won't be frigid at all. but it will be cooler to the end of the week. >> thank you, bob. help for those who are less fortunate. today, the ravens gave back to the community. mary shows us how they're helping people in need. mary? today, vic. some of the biggest names on the team go ahead a major impact in their community at the helping up mission in east

soccer star crippled. one year later, the driver admits she was drunk when she wrecked her car. tonight, derek valcourt speaks exclusively to us about the crash and the driver she blames the world cup came and went without davies. what started out as a fun night with two friends ended up in a drunk drunk crash. left davies injured and killed ashley roberta, who attended baltimore's mercy hospital and grew up in her parents' home in phoenix. >> that life changed her life forever. >> reporter: jana will never forget that day. early, her daughter were riding with this woman. the three had just left a d.c. nightclub, heading south on the george washington parkway, when a drunk espinoza lost control of her suv, slammed into a

guardrail, mangling davies' body and killing ashley. >> what has this done to your family? >> it has devastated our family. we'll never be the same. the pain is so great. we can't even explain it in words. the pain is so great. and it was causeed by marie espinoza, her driving drunk. >> espinoza, barely injured, with a blood alcohol level of .13. it's a guilty plea ashley's mother hopes others will learn from. >> i think that will help a little bit, knowing that maybe it will save somebody else. they'll think twice before they get into a car after they have been drinking. >> reporter: espin ona -- espinoza faces up fines and time in prison. now, charlie davies has returned to playing soccer.

davies' family is considering filing civil charges against the driver. a woman drove her car into the water. lucky for her, a good samaritan decided to take action. christopher sullivan said he jumped onto a floating dock and pulled himself closer with a rake. he was able to bust the back window out and rescue 22-year- old taylor vander hook moments before the car sank. >> i think anybody that came up on that situation would have done the same. there was a person in the car and they were sinking and she was crying out. i think in the reverse, she would have done the same for me. >> after this, vander hook said she left the scene. then she tried to bribe officers to drop charges. a heroes welcome at the white house as a soldier is presented with the military's highest honor. mary is live in the newsroom with more on what makes this such an historic situation.

>> salvatore giunta is the first to receive the metal of honor. the army staff sergeant. both rescued soldiers later died from their injuries. that makes today's honor bittersweet for the sergeant. >> and although this is so positive, i would give this back in a second to have my friends with me now. >> he was the rifle team leader when they were ambushed in afghanistan. >> several others have received the medal of honor, posthumously. a man jumps into the way of a freight train to save the life of another. the quick-thinking hero talks

exclusively with wjz about what was going through his mind when he jumped onto the tracks. a man suffers a seizure and falls onto the tracks at a washington, d.c. metro stop. retired marine jumps into the path of danger and saves the man's life. >> what was going through your mind at that moment? >> the first thing going through my mind was get him to safety. and i jumped onto the plat storm. >> he said he had no idea when the next train would come through the arlington stop. >> was there ever a moment of hesitation? >> once i realized he was not responsive, i said, oh, to hell with it. and i grabbed his arms. and two gentleman up there helped me get him up on the platform to safety. >> he knew what to do at this

stop because his father, back in the 1990s, worked at the metro center. and his father talked about the danger there on the tracks. >> he used to take me into the tunnels. he would tell me where to go, what to touch. whatnot to touch. don't ever touch the third rail. >> reporter: an important third lesson, because that third rail carries 750 volts of deadly electricity. >> did you learn anything about yourself during this event? >> that i'm nuts? >> well, i just hope i look after it. it's very, very special. >> reporter: kate called princess diana an inspirational woman and says she wishes she could have met her. prince william says he is confident his fiance will do a good job as princess. >> no one is trying to fill my mother's shoes. and what she did is fantastic. it's about making your own future and destiny. >> reporter: the royal family has known about the engagement for a month. the queen says she is delighted for the couple. william's father charles says he's thrilled. >> reporter: kate's parents can't wait to call the prince family. >> we all think he's wonderful. and we're extremely fond of him. >> reporter: the pair met eight years ago at st. san drew's university in scotland. they moved in together as friends and their romangs blossomed from there. >> they'll have to get used to it now. and as far as the pitter-patter of royal feet. >> i think we'll take it one

moving to ban caffeinated alcoholic drinks this week. the fda is expected to find that caffeine is an unsafe additive to food and alcoholic drinks. nine people were hospitalized and a maryland woman died after drinking the popular drink four loko. she was involved in an accident. the drink has already been banned in four states. hitting the road for the holidays. expect more traffic as you visit family for thanksgiving. triple a just released its holiday travel forecast. they predict about 42 million people will travel. that's a big increase from last year. the bad news is, if you are traveling, be prepared for higher gas prices and possible delays at the airport. >> and you have to listen to that music the whole time you're staying there. >> i'll be out of my mind. katie couric has a preview of what's coming up tonight on the cbs evening news. it's a conversation we often avoid. when it comes to end of life care, what do you need to think about?
