terrifying wake-up call. dozens of homes ruined after a strong storm resident of rips through baltimore. >> now, weather officials work to confirm a possible tornado. >> hi. i'm kai jackson. >> i'm mary bubala. here's what people are talking about. >> it is an absolute miracle no one died. the cleanup is under way right now, as bee take a live look at the aftermath over perring parkway in northeast baltimore. derek valcourt is in baltimore county, but we begin with adam may, in the hardest hit area of the city. >> kai, when you survey the damage here on the ground, it really does look like a war zone. right here behind me, you can see that bge crews are back here. they are trying to restore electricity. and in the meantime, no one is allowed in this neighborhood.

the dutch village apartment complex at northeast baltimore, torn to shreds by a strong storm that surprised residents overnight. >> i was asleep. and i just heard the boom, boom, boom. >> and that was your roof? >> that was my roof coming. the glass popping. the glass breaking from my window. >> the tree from my backyard had flew over into my window and shattered it completely. >> reporter: 54 units and 16 buildings have now been condemned. many are missing windows. some look like they have been bombed. residents gathered for help at a makeshift shelter at a nearby ice rink. >> we are not allowing anyone to go in. trees are falling. there are hot lines on the ground. cars stacked on each other. and it's not in the best intf everyone to go -- interest of anyone to go in tonight. >> reporter: they were tossed around the parking lot. governor o'malley and mayor

stephanie rawlings-blake toured the damage. >> pretty interesting damage, a cut through the city-county line here in northeast baltimore. >> we are tremendously blessed that we are not here talking about significant loss of life with what we just witnessed today. >> reporter: and as the mayor just said, no one was killed in the storm. but at least three people were hurt. we're hearing of one child that may have had a broken arm. we're also hearing from an adult male, a cancer survivor, who was just released from the hospital. moments ago. he has an incredible story of survival. and i'll bring that to you at 4:30. for now, we're live, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you so much. first warning weather coverage continues with derek valcourt in carne, baltimore county, where as many as 100 homes are there. derek? >> reporter: check this out. this is just one great example here. this huge hole, now in this roof. a window to the sky, if you

will, was not here, just 24 hours ago. and that is all because of this. this gigantic tree. a real testament to the power of how strong these 80-mile-an- hour winds were, that they were able to take these winds down and cause havoc in this area. >> reporter: in the carne park neighborhood, they woke to mother nature's mess. trouble began around 1:45 in the morning, when neighbors heard rumbling in thhomes. >> my -- their homes. >> my wife and i woke up and said, we better get to the basement. by the time we got to the basement, it was basically over. >> this free made a thunderous noise, when it came down on this house. >> all of a sudden, you hear the tree go down. and this is what happened. at first, it was just sitting on the house. and as time has gone by, it has just slowly creeped down the house. >> reporter: the homeowners out

of town, neighbors were the ones who called 911. >> when the fire crews arrived, it became clear that some kind of unusual weather event had moved through with this line of storms. >> reporter: some of the damage too difficult for firefighters to see in the middle of the night. it wasn't until this morning when many homeowners realized just how severe the storm was. >> reporter: and i came out this morning. and i saw a shoulder off of my house. and i looked around and there were two trees next to me that fell completely. one fell on the car over there. and one fell over there. >> reporter: bge crews hard at work over here. as you can imagine, thousands of power outages in the baltimore county area, that they have been working to restore power to. and they aren't the only ones hard at work because of this storm. all week long, we've seen lots of insurance adjustors out and about. and nothing but tree trimmers who see dollar signs when these storm comes through and do so much damage here. we are live. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness

news. >> derek, thank you. first warning weather coverage continues now with captain mike perry, in sky eye chopper 13. he has a view of the entire area, from where he is sitting. mike? >> reporter: hi, kai. we are along mclane boulevard, south of northern parkway, where most of the damage was done. this was where the roofs were literally ripped off the apartment buildings upon and as you can see, the power of this storm as it fell. trees after ripping off the roofs, knocking down the trees. and then causing the roofs to slam into the back of townhomes nearby. now after it did that damage, the actual roof itself continued up into the court and landed right up just south of northern parkway. now, there was a significant amount of debris here, lined up in front of these houses. you can see ripped shingles off, and ripped the siding off of many of these houses. it's just extremely fortunate that no one was killed as a result of this significant damage from this storm. and this appears to be the worst affected area, although

not the only affected area. you can see three blocks south. high school here, along perring parkway. we see other roofs damaged and lots of other folks conducting cleanup also. but just the sheer power of this wind was very, very significant. in what it did here. it's probably the worst damage i've seen in quite sometime. back to you on tv hill. >> just really scary moments for the folks last night. all right, captain mike. thank you. now, meteorologist bernadette woods has a look at the strength of the storm as it moved through the area. bernadette? >> we have a couple of different areas going on. this is the area that saw the worst damage. notice this line of storms, just around here. it moved through the region. that's where all of the damage was done. top left-hand corner. this is a time code, too. we'll take you through one more time and show you. as we head through the overnight hours, making their way northeast into baltimore county. now, we don't know if it's a tornado yet or not. the national weather service was out there, surveying the

damage. and they will have an assessment later today. a few things they are looking at are one, the pattern of the damage, whether it's a straight line or if this is twisted and in a rotation. and also, the damage on the roof compared to the construction on them. even though the storm is gone, the winds have been gusting high all day. just dropped the wind advisory in effect for a lot of the area. still in effect for 8:00 tonight. this is why. the winds have been sustained for most of the day, over 20 miles per hour. they are starting to back off. take a look at the wind gusts. over 30 miles per hour. we have approached 50 miles an hour at times today. we'll have a complete loo forecast. -- fleet complete forecast. -- complete forecast. and we just checked with bge. 11,000 are without power. and 4,000 in baltimore city. remember, wjz is always on. for constant updates on the forecast, and live radar any time, go to wjz.com.

is it the end of banning alcoholic drinks. kendis gibson is in los angeles, with details. >> reporter: college student, jose navarette has tried a few alcoholic energy drinks. >> the most i had was 1 1/2. and i felt like i was having the time of my life that day. >> reporter: youbut the combination of alcohol with caffeine can be dangerous. they said mixing the two is a public health concern. >> the person becomes intoxicated to the extreme. when the caffeine wears off, there are blackouts that occur. >> reporter: the fruit-flavored drinks have nicknames like liquid cocaine and blackout in a can. and are especially popular on college campuses, where dozens of students will be sent to emergency rooms. >> reporter: one can of the most popular brand contains the alcohol of four to five beers.

and the caffeine of four to five cans of soda and the extra jolt can be dangerous. >> the caffeine impairs the drinker to be able to tell that they're drunk. >> reporter: four loko is now removing caffeine from its drinks. alcoholic energy drinks are already banned in four states. students in washington state are stocking up before the ban takes effect thursday. >> we sold maybe 30 cases just this morning. >> as for navarette, he's given up on the drinks. >> it messes with your heart. >> reporter: they warned, the government can seize the drinks, if companies continue making them. kendis gibson, cbs news, los angeles. >> the companies that make the alcoholic energy drinks have 15 days to respond to the fda. new at 5:00, local reaction to the fda's decision about these drinks. >> full-body patdowns. they are sparking privacy concerns at airports nationwide. but the tsa says they are here to stay. at a hearing on capitol hill today, the head of the tsa

admitted, the new patdowns are more invasive. but he said the government must provide the best possible security for air travelers. federal officials also decide if passengers will not be able to avoid body imaging screening, based on religious beliefs. civil rights say it violates the right to privacy. a landmark contract tying teachers paychecks to student performance. it was up a first time. now it's up for a second vote at this hour. thousands of baltimore teachers are at the polls right now. denise? >> well, the baltimore union rejected the original contract by 400 votes last month. but as you say, teachers are back at the polls right now, following successful negotiations between union and school officials. they reworked the potential agreement, adding details that teachers were fighting for. the union also changed the way teachers vote, by using electronic polling, after teachers complained of waiting. under the new contracts,

three men, armed with handguns rob a busy chuck e. cheese restaurant in california. watch the unsuspecting teenage employee in the black and white stripes. in a matter of seconds, he's down on the ground. only when we free the surveillance video can you firstsee the robber point the gun in his face and then at the back of his head. >> oh, my god, that's horrible. >> reporter: we showed the

footage to shocked parents that came to the same chuck e. cheese and robbed it. >> kids come here all the time. and they stamp your hand and you think it's safe. but when this happens, i don't know. that's crazy. >> reporter: the video goes on to show robbers huddled over. the three crooks ran around, wearing masks, gloves and hoods. later, they forced all 40 employees into a storage room, steal an undisclosed amount of cash and disappear in seconds. >> we bring them here to play, not to die. oh, my god. that's horrible. >> reporter: police say they looked like experience criminals who have done this before. no one was injured. and the three robbers got away. catching them is now one of the department's priorities. >> next time, i'll just -- i'm just going to leave them at home, rent a jumar, order a--

pumper-- jumper, order a pizza at home. wall street did not bounce back today. the market suffered losses again. although not as steep as on monday. the dow was down 16. s&p up a fraction. alexis christoforous has tonight's cbs money watch update. wall street is focusing on the global economy once again. ireland is struggling after a collapse in its housing. inflation was flat for the third straight month. two/10ths of a percent. at the same time, prices for cars, hotels and clothing fell. the housing market continues to fall despite record low mortgage rates.

new home construction fell nearly 12% last month. mostly because of weakness in apartment construction. overall, home construction is 77 below its peak. analysts say it could be years. and a promising new cleft rol drug. merck's drug was found to boost good cholesterol to new highs and bad cholesterol to new lows. the news stunned researchers. for more, head to cbs money watch.com. in new york, i'm alexis christoforous. wanted. what this woman is accused of stealing. a 10-year-old found dead. the reason a father did not attend his daughter's memorial. how long will the sun stick around? >> wjz 13 is always on.

been windy. wind advisory out for most of the state. but here on the eastern shore, stays. wind gusts even higher than that. and they're starting to back off at this hour. but earlier today, these are some of our peak wind gusts. we saw over 50 miles per hour in dover and in d.c. even around camp david. frostburg, 46 miles per hour. it's 57 degrees outside right now. and take a look. we topped out at 61 today. our low so far has been only 54 degrees. we're way above average. but we're going to start to back off on that, too, over the next few days. here's that storm on a wider view. here's the center of it, driving this entire thing. it was so close today, even though the cold front was gone that's why it was high. and just removing itself from our area. the winds will start to respond and slacken as we head through

the evening hours. now, another thing, too, another storm will come through. it's going to keep up a little breeze tomorrow. and then bring in the cooler air. high pressure will start to settle the air friday. it will be a cool day. but then things start to recover. winds are backing off. and overall, not too bad. so for our forecast, it comes together like this. we have gail warnings until -- in effect. they will be replaced through tomorrow night. bay temp, 54 degrees. forecast as we head through the overnight. winds start to lessen. we are going down to 38 degrees. then tomorrow, any sunshine giving way to increasing clouds as we head through the afternoon. and the storm passes off to the south. we think it's probably going to go through dry. it's so small, a lot of people aren't going to see anything. snow shower possible as the cool air starts to come in behind it. >> we are in mid-november.

>> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about this afternoon. hundreds of maryland families affected by a monster storm. this is what people in baltimore county are dealing with after strong winds uprooted trees and damaged about 100 homes there. now, despite the damage, there were only a few minor injuries. wjz is tracking it all live in first warning weather. bob turk has a look at the strength of the storm. but first, adam may is following up the cleanup under way in northeast baltimore. adam? >> well, denise, there were pee 3 people that were confirmed to have injuries as a result of this storm. one of those men was a recent cancer survivor, who thought this storm was going to be the death of them. >> right outside my window. >> reporter: speaking only to wjz, michael wilkins barely made it out alive. after an apartment complex got hit. >> the lights went off. the tv went off. and it was just a loud, boom.

and before i could embrace might for what i knew had to be disastrous, i was hit in the face with some sort of debris. and when i looked up, all i saw was the sky. and the sky looked very dark, like it was about to do the same thing again. >> wilkens hid in his closet, suffering cracked ribs, going in and out of consciousness, until he was rescued by paramedics. >> it was just unablable. and i looked around. and looked like i was in a war zone. >> did you feel like you were in shock a little bit? >> i'm still feeling in shock. i've been in shock since this happened. and i'm still in shock. there's no way i would have gotten out of there. i was definitely afraid and fearful for my life. >> reporter: a very lucky man now.

it's been very, very busy here all afternoon. we have seen construction crews, tree trimmers coming and going from this apartment complex. trying to get it cleaned up. trying to make it safe for residents. for now, no residents are allowed here inside their apartments until tomorrow morning at the very earliest. reporting live, adam may, wjz eyewitness news. >> what an incredible account of that story. adam, thanks so much. and a look at the storm's strength as it moved through baltimore. last night, around 11:00, we had a little line of thundershowers across virginia. by the time they got here, they got stronger and stronger and moved very quickly across the area. there you see the highlighted area, between 1:00 and 1:30. that's when the strongest lines of these moved through. whether or not it was a straight-line wind damage from a thunderstorm, or downburst, they can be up to 80 miles an hour. or whether it was, in fact, a small tornado. weather services out there right now. they looked to see the damage

pattern. to see if it is rotasted -- rotated, twisted. or if it just picked up and moved from one place to another. that would mean it's very strong, straight line winds. we'll have determination as soon as weather service prints it out for you. and to the north, new jersey was also hammered by strong winds. officials say strong gusts flipped over several small planes at an airport in mercer county. the same storm has been seeing major damage. and more than 80,000 people lost power. no injuries were reported there. remember, wjz 13 is always on. for instant updates, the forecast, live radar any time, go to wjz.com. breaking news right now. lots of smoke from a fire in baltimore county. sky eye chopper 13 is over the scene in sparks. captain mike perry has more. mike? >> reporter: we're in the 4400 block of coal bottom road. this is on the west side of i- 83. north of cold bottom, where a

single wide mobile home has caught fire. they still have heavy smoke coming from the flames inside. there is no word of injuries or a cause at this point. but firefighters are on the scene, making good progress on the fire. >> thank you very much, captain mike perry. he has been dubbed the merchandise of death. and he is finally in america, facing terrorism charges. russian-born victor booth, is accused of selling terrorist weapons all over the world. but both booth and russia say he is innocent. >> reporter: victor boote has been called the merchant of death, accused of supplying murder weapons to dictators and warlords worldwide. u.s. investigators say he is also a terrorist. and in a courtroom, the former soviet military officer was charged. >> he no longer poses a threat to global security. >> reporter: boote was arrested during a sting operation in thailand.

undercover officers said they wanted weapons to kill u.s. agents. authorities say boote offered to sell them hundreds of missiles and guns. >> based on recorded conversations, boote said he preferred murdering americans. >> reporter: he is believed to be worth billions. his exploits were believed to inspire the 2005 movie "lord of war" and the fictional arms dealer played by nicholas cage. >> reporter: inside the courtroom, he wore a t-shirt and sweat pants and spoke politely to the judge. the 48-year-old, who pleaded not guilty, says he's been wrongly accused. and the russian government agrees. >> reporter: russia fought hard to keep boote from being taken by u.s. authorities. the charges against him comes just days before president obama and russia's president attend a nato meeting in portugal. the white house says the tug-of- war over the suspected arms dealer will not damage relations between the two countries.

boote is being held without bond until his next court appearance in january. ines feray, cbs news, new york. in the past, russian officials warned that cooperation efforts might be curtailed, unless boot is freed. hundreds remembered a little girl who was killed last month. but her father was not in attendance. now he's explaining why. >> vic. mourners gathered on what would have been zara baker's 11th birthday. she disappeared last month. new court papers show that the girl was dead and had been dismembered. adam baker said he had nothing to do with it. >> reporter: snow -- there is no possible way to ever fill

the hole from my daughter. >> reporter: police found bones belonging to zara at two locations miles apart. zara's stepmother denies dismembering her. >> her stepmother remains in jail after she admits to writing a fake ransom note to throw off police. police just charged a former survivor producer, with killing his wife on their mexican vacation. stacy butler is in los angeles, with the new evidence that led to his arrest. >> reporter: taken into custody, at the redman family home in rancho palos verdes tonight, bruce beresford-redman is behind bars for murdering his wife monica. according to a stunning complaint, just filed in federal court, the night before monica beresford-redman went missing, two british teens in the room below, were awakened

by screams and loud calls for help from above. it sounded look a woman in extreme distress. a forensic expert examined beresford's hotel room. he found stains on a pillar, on the sheets on the bed and on the railing. the stains tested presumptively positive for the presence of blood. >> reporter: and hotel records showed that one of the keys was used to open the door to their room, at least nine times between midnight and 7:00 and 8:00 a.m., in the early morning hours of april 6th. at least four of those are recorded during a 15-minute period between 4:00 and 4:15 a.m. tonight, we spoke with a woman in mexico. >> she said it was a very good news and a showing of support by the united states towards

mex nex in this particular incident. -- mexico in this particular incident. >> reporter: there have been questions question about the justice in mexico. authorities want them to extradite him back, possibly to send a message. >> reporter: family members say before her death, monica beresford-redman discovered her husband was having an affair and was seeking a divorce. the trip to mexico was an attempt to reconcile. a large cocaine ring. 14 people are facing drug trafficking and money laundering charges. officials say they used private jets jets to shuttle large amounts of cocaine to baltimore. a woman stealing from cars parked in school parking lots. it's happening around anne arundel county and police are asking for help. mary is in the newsroom with details on the investigation. police are investigating several thefts from cars parked outside schools, as well as other public parking lots. and they have just released

these photos of a woman, using credit cards stolen from these cars. she's been caught on tape, buying things from grocery stores in pasadena, crofton and glen burnie. anybody who can identify this woman is asked to call police. denise? >> thank you, mary. detectives believe there are other people involved in the theft. if you're waiting for someone to get home from work, let's check in on the roads now with sharon gibala. >> good afternoon, everyone. well, we still have problems actually left over from the overnight storm. some debris still blocking northern parkway. that's going to be northern parkway between hill road. you can take cold spring lane there. meanwhile, an accident, kingston. hunt valley, there's an accident on mccormick at wright avenue. several accidents in the city, some of them include orleans at north broadway. east pratt. west franklin street. one more in glen burnie on richie highway at new jersey

a 3-year-old girl is rescued, unharmed, after she falls into a 98-foot well in argentina. the girl was playing when she fell into the dried-up well. rescuers lowered a net down the shaft for the girl to climb in. it took over six hours to pull her back up to safety. well, the search continues for three missing family members who disappeared last week from their mount vernon, ohio home. jessica kartalija is live in the newsroom with the latest. >> reporter: no one has seen or heard from the missing family since last week. a mother, her son cody, and a family friend have been missing. one of the family members, sarah strang, was found and

rescued sunday. matthew hoffman is accused of holding her in the basement of his home. investigators are searching the area near his home as well as conducting air and water searches. >> reporter: police say hoffman has not been cooperative in the investigation. he has been placed under suicide watch. ronnie chasen was known as a power player. now, she is gunned down in her car in beverly hills. >> reporter: flowers and a candle lay at the site, where hollywood publicist ronnie chasen lost her life, after being shot five times in the chest. while at the wheel of her mercedes. >> i picked up the phone and called other people so they would tell me that it was a mistake. >> reporter: jeanne wolf is with west parade magazine and calls ronnie one of her dearest friends. this is video of ronnie posted on you tube. >> i'm going to miss most about

all right. things are finally quieting down. winds are beginning to calm down as we look at sunset tonight. take a look at temps around the region. with 57. west winds still at 21. humidity pretty low now. down to 41%. the dew points drop. and the barometer on the way back up. big area of low pressure that came through the area. created tremendous amount of wind, overnight, with that line of thunderstorms. obviously we had locally very gusty, strong winds. perhaps even in some locations.

perhaps even small tornadoes reported. although we have not had verification of that storm yet. but we're still waiting for the weather service to make a final determination. 41 in oakland now. 62 in pax river. 61 in ocean city. our high of the day was just before 1:00 this morning. that's when the front came through. that's when we had the warmest temperature. the most instability in the atmosphere. this is very rare for november. had all of this warm air coming from the southeast. and a dryer air mass coming quickly across the mountains. and between the two, we had a line of thunderstorms. and down here, around 11:00. and quickly across the region, between 1 and 2:00 this morning. right now, we still have a wind advisory for the upper eastern shore. as you can see, delaware and across pennsylvania. the rest of the region, they have dropped the advisory. you can see the clouds this morning. they cleared out, basically all of the entire region now. generally clear skies. and that will continue. right now, our winds around 21.

only nine in cumberland. 15 in d.c. nine in ocean city. they've come down a little bit. strongest winds generally from the baltimore area, north and east, where the storm still kind of sits. gusts now, 30 in elkton. and 24 in ocean city. still breezy. winds will calm down tonight. 56, strongest winds, dover. camp david, 53. bwi marshall, 46. hagerstown, annapolis. low pressure to canada. but there's the front that came through the region. we've cleared out. a little system coming to the midwest is going to pass to our south tomorrow afternoon. they're bringing clouds. and behind it, temperatures will begin to fall again for the end of the week. we're looking at still breezy conditions. that little weak low, passing to our south. and it will turn cooler for friday into the weekend. gusts to 20 knots on the bay. and gale warning, until 6:00 tonight.
