good morning, everybody. good to see you on a monday. thanksgiving week. i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen. we begin this morning with the uproar over new airport screening procedures. late yesterday the transportation security agency said it's looking into refining the procedures but that's it for now. the tight security will stay. 1.6 million americans will fly this week. a body scanning boycott is planned. congress is also considering hearings. we go to washington for the latest. >> reporter: good morning. the scanners have been in place for months and now are fully operational at about 70 airports across the country. more than a million people will be impacted by these new measures as they travel for the holiday weekend. there's growing turbulence over the latest airport security measures. >> i think the body scanners are invasive. >> would you submit to one of these pat downs? >> not if i could avoid it.
4:32 am
no, who would? >> reporter: with 1.6 million americans set to take to the skies this week, many face the added step of going through body scanners or a full body pat down. thomas sawyer got both. >> i was just mortified. >> reporter: he says his pat down earlier this month was so aggressive it spilled his urine bag, a result of cancer surgery. he had to travel in urine soaked shirt and pants. >> i was so embarrassed at going into the airport and thinking people would see me and "smell" me. >> reporter: the tsa plans to keep the measures in place. there could be some changes. in a statement sunday, the head of the tsa said the agency would work to make screening methods as least invasive as possible. earlier he maintained a policy was here to stay. >> we're not changing the policies. >> reporter: some travelers say the inconvenience is a small price for safety.
4:33 am
>> i would rather give up a little privacy than worry about something going wrong on a plane. >> reporter: airports could see problems on wednesday. a loosely organized protest called national opt out day is urging passengers to boycott scanners and opt for pat downs. that could mean even bigger delays on the busiest travel day of the year. a body scan can take as little as ten seconds but a pat down can take up to four minutes so if people choose to participate on wednesday you can see why it could cause delays. right now both airlines and airports aren't saying if they're taking any extra steps because of the protest. >> pack your patience. thank you. engine failure forced a moscow bound airliner to return to new york last night. one of two engines on a boeing 767 failed just after takeoff. the crew circled john f. kennedy airport for more than an hour as it dumped fuel. no one was injured. an investigation is under way. a 13-year-old american boy campaigning for the

4:35 am
north korea boasts the new plant has been in the works since april 2009. it's intended for civilian use but hecker says it could be converted to make it nuclear grade uranium. it could be an attempt to prop up north korea as it faces a tricky power transition from ailing dictator kim jong-il to his youngest son explains admiral mike mullen, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. >> it also continues to validate a country that is led by a dictator and constantly desires to destabilize the region. >> reporter: or this revelation could be a bid to secure more food and fuel aid for the impoverished north. in exchange for promises to shut the plant. one thing is clear. strict sanctions pressuring north korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program are not working. and once again kim jong-il is creating a political firestorm in the region.
