worth airport this morning with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: the big question is what will travelers do when they are confronted with the new security screening procedures. if they decide to protest in large numbers, this could be a very long week. it's the beginning of the busiest travel week of the year. with nearly 1.5 million americans taking to the skies between now and sunday facing pat downs that many feel are too aggressive and body scans that are too revealing. >> i think they show too much and are not necessary. >> reporter: refuse the scan and get ready for a full body pat down by tsa agents, a procedure that has passengers on edge. even secretary of state hillary clinton says she would avoid probing hands of the tsa. >> would you submit to one of these pat downs? >> not if i -- not if i could avoid it. who would? >> they have become fodder for

"saturday night live." but passenger thomas sawyer says there was nothing funny about his pat down at detroit's metro airport. he said it was so aggressive it spilled his urine bag, a result of cancer surgery. he had to travel in a urine soaked shirt and pants. >> i was just mortified. my underwear had been dropped to the floor. i'm standing in front of them with underwear had to ask for them to pull it up. >> reporter: president obama said he asked tsa officials to examine new security measures. >> what i said to tsa is you have to constantly refine and measure whether what we're doing is the only way to ensure the american people's safety. >> reporter: many americans support full body scanners to protect them from terrorist. >> i rather have a body scan than a pat down. >> reporter: many are demanding the tsa change its ways and provide a dignified way to fly

safely. officials are feeling the heat from all levels from travelers. the question is if they'll change these security procedures or modify them any time soon. maggie? >> don teague in dallas. joining us from washington is tsa administrator john pistole. virtually every newspaper in the country quotes you as saying you wouldn't change these procedures and then as backtracking a bit to say this is an evolving process. so many people will be traveling this week. i want them to know exactly what to expect. could you please be as clear as possible. will you change these security procedures before the holiday? >> maggie, of course we're always evaluating and trying to assess what is the best possible way of conducting our security operations to ensure the safety and security of the traveling public. we know the weekend that al qaeda in the arabian peninsula issued new information that went into great detail about how they

constructed these cargo bombs out of yemen at the end of last month. very aware of the concerns raised by the american people, members of congress reflecting their constituents views and those of the general traveling public concerned about what does this mean? what i'm doing is working with security experts both within ntsa and the inspector general's office that did covert testing that found we were not thorough enough over the last several years to say are there other possible ways of doing screening that would also give some high level of confidence that everybody on every flight has been thoroughly screened. >> in the meantime you will continue with the pat downs that some people call humiliating, violating and demeaning at the moment. that's still the plan? >> let me say first very few people receive the pat downs. they either alert through a walk through metal detector or opt

out of technology. >> some people who have don't like them. i don't know if you heard the story of this man who said that it was so aggressive that his urine bag spilled. my question is why should anyone have to sacrifice dignity for safety? >> well, what it comes down to is that balance that we've been talking about. obviously great concern over anybody who has felt like they have not been treated properly or have had something embarrassing like that happen. the bottom line is how can we make sure that we don't have a bomber who opts out and then not given a thorough pat down and have the nonmetallic bomb on him that can cause catastrophic harm and kill hundreds of people in the air and perhaps people on the ground. that's that balance between the security and privacy. how do we best work that? >> mr. pistole, i'm sure your

aware of the internet move for travelers to opt out of these full body scanners on wednesday and opt instead for those pat downs. what would you like to say to people who are considering doing this? >> what i would hope they would consider is vast majority of people just want to get home for the holidays and spend time with their loved ones. i would hate for those people who again over 80% of people say we should use advanced imaging technology and another study, 78% said we should have enhanced screening, the vast majority of people including the 99% who do not opt out of ait through our experience, those people want to get home to spend time with family and loved ones so i just feel bad for those people who might be delayed because of lines caused by people who want to protest. >> john pistole, thank you very much, sir, for your time. >> thank you, maggie. despite intense international pressure, north

korea is ramping up its nuclear program. the rogue country built a secret new uranium enrichment facility and david martin has more this morning from the pentagon. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, harry. >> let us talk about this report that was first released in "the new york times" over the weekend. a well known american scientist who has made visits before goes to north korea and what does he see? >> he sees something he called stunning and astonishing which is a fully up and apparently running uranium enrichment plant which he said looked as modern as anything you would see in the united states. and they somehow did this while under economic sanctions and of course one of the big mysteries here is how they got the technology. >> before we get to who might be helping them, let's talk a little bit about the united states envoy to north korea said

this morning that this is not a crisis. however, the kinds of uranium and sophistication of the technology there while north koreans will claim it's to use to make electricity could very well be used for other purposes, could it not? >> it could. when it comes to north korea nobody puts much stock in the best case analysis that this would be used for electricity. the fear here is that while they're showing off this one plant, there's another secret plant some place else in north korea that we don't know about that is already turning out bomb grade uranium. >> all of this happening under sanctions. does it seem that somebody must be helping them in some way and the other part of this is the fear is that they are making uranium that ends up weapon grade, north korea would sell this to anybody who would want it. >> this is the whole proliferation issue. it appears that somebody somehow

gave them some technology on how to build this sophisticated equipment that you need for enrichment. that somebody could be iran. that somebody could be pakistan. north korea already has between 6 and 12 nuclear weapons. nobody wants to see them get anymore. the bigger concern as you mentioned is they will sell bomb grade material to another nuclear want to be either a state like iran or syria or perhaps even worst, a terrorist organization like al qaeda. >> david martin at the pentagon. thank you very much for your expertise. do appreciate it. it's now 7:10. we want to give you a look at the rest of the day's headlines. jeff glor is filling in at the news desk. >> there's good news on children's health. a dramatic drop in

weighed in on a possible presidential candidate of palin. >> she's beautiful. i think she's happy in alaska and i hope she'll stay there. >> reporter: her book tour will take her to key presidential battleground states for the run up to 2012 like iowa and south carolina. in exerts of the book, palin talks about popular culture and not politics while criticizing reality tv shows like "american idol." palin revisits comments michelle obama made during the 2008 election campaign when mrs. obama said support for her husband made her proud of her country for the first time in her adult life. i guess this shouldn't surprise us, palin writes, since both of them spent almost two decades in the pews of the jeremiah wright's church listening to his rants against america and white people. the book's publisher is sueiing

>> of course. in my fantasy football game too. back in july teagan marti plunged 100 feet from a ride at a wisconsin amusement park. a fall that no one believed she could survive. in a moment we'll speak exclusively with her mother and her attorney. first i flew down to florida last week and spoke to teagan about the fight of her life. 13-year-old teagan marti dreamed of months of going to wisconsin's extreme world amusement park for the thrill of riding terminal velocity. >> she had seen on the travel channel the thing about amusement parks. she wanted to go on it. >> terminal velocity is like bungee jumping without the cord. >> the operator, this man, made a mistake and released her without putting the safety net in place. she plummeted ten stories before crashing to the ground.

how much did you see? >> i saw the entire thing. i was the first one to do cpr on her. and it was just horrific. >> reporter: teagan crushed her pelvis, spleen and liver barely clinging to life she was air lifted to a nearby hospital. the man was criminally charged with reckless injury and faces up to 25 years in prison. >> i wish i could forget the moment. i remember it all. >> reporter: today teagan struggles with simplest of tasks. sun able to walk and can barely speak. what is the first thing that you remember? >> waking up in the hospital. >> reporter: now nearly four months later she spends three hours a day five days a week at this rehab hospital in south florida pushing, pulling, and hand reaching for recovery. how are you feeling?

julie, and their family attorney, stuart grossman. let me say what a pleasure it was to spend time with your family and to see how well teagan is doing and how wonderful her prognosis is. i want to talk about the legal case and lessons we can all take from this accident. let me ask you, who do you blame for teagan's accident? >> i blame charles carnell for his negligence. >> charles carnell, the ride operator, who admitted to releasing teagan 40 feet too early before the safety net was in place is reportedly devastated, julie. he's said through his attorney that he just blanked out. something he says can and does happen to everyone and that he meant no harm. do you accept that explanation? >> it's never happened before so i don't understand how he said it could happen. there should have been a fail

safe mechanism in place so this could never happen to anyone. >> since the accident what they've done as you know is put up red tape to prevent other employees from releasing people too soon. is that in your view too little too late? >> absolutely. i don't think red tape is the answer. i think that there should be some mechanism in place that would prevent anyone from being dropped without something in place to stop that from happening. >> what do you think an appropriate punishment would be for charles carnell? >> honestly i don't have an answer for that, maggie. >> he faces up to 25 years in prison, stuart. i know that he's facing his punishment. you have settled with extreme world, the amusement park and now you are also going after the

manufacturer of the ride. what would you like from him, stuart? >> you know, i view carnell as almost a tragic figure. i certainly never thought that he intentionally hurt teagan. having said that, he represents a class of people who are given an awesome responsibility and they just can't be "blacking out" or not concentrating or whatever it might be. >> what do you think the lessons are? i'll start with you, stuart, for all parents here? >> well, thank you. i think that the

nearly 40 million travelers expected to hit the road for the thanksgiving holiday, now's a good time to think about the tires on your car. those four rings of rubber can make all the difference when it come to avoiding an accident. consumer correspondent susan koeppen is here with all of the details. good morning. >> good morning, harry. most americans use all-season tires but experts say snow tires are a good investment during the winter season. are they worth the money? we wanted to find out so i got behind the wheel and headed into a very icy situation. it's not even winter yet but snow has already hit from the midwest down to the texas panhandle. >> by thanksgiving winter will be in full swing in parts of the country especially over the central plains on into lakes and

perhaps even the northeast by then. >> reporter: as temperatures drop, driving conditions get dangerous. traditionally december, january and february are the worst months for driving with nearly 1.5 million crashes last year alone. so how do you keep yourself safe? matt edmonds from tirerack.com says it all starts down here. how important is the right tire on your car? >> the easiest way to think about it is the tires are the shoes on your car. having the right shoes on your vehicle for weather conditions is just as important as your personal shoes. >> reporter: we put some tires to the test on a skating rink in connecticut. three identical cars. one with summer tires. one with all-season tires and one with winter tires. take a look at how the different tires react to braking at just 10 miles per hour. the summer tires keep on going

sliding more than 45 feet after hitting the brakes. the all-season tires are better. sliding nearly 36 feet. if i have these tires on my car and i get to a stop sign and stop, did i just go through the intersection? >> you pretty much cleared the intersection. >> reporter: take a look at what happens with winter tires. we stop after almost 18 feet. >> straight and controlled. >> reporter: side by side the difference is dramatic. we also tried turning at just 10 miles per hour. the winter tires corner no problem. i glide right through. the all-season -- out of control. not so much. the summer tires -- i'm turning right but i'm going straight. we have no control at all. >> our vehicles these days have so many technologies to help give us control and safety but they're only as good as traction and control. the only thing that gives us

traction are those four tires. >> reporter: and experts say if you're going to put winter tires on your car, put them on from thanksgiving to tax day and you need all four to be winter tires and not just two in the front or two in the back. >> it can make it more dangerous. how much do these things cost? looking at the difference on the treads you can see there's a big difference. >> winter tires are 100 to 150 per tire. it will cost you $400 to $500. think about what is the deductible on your car insurance. would you rather have tires or a crash? >> in florida or southern california, i don't have to pay attention to this. >> if you live in florida or southern california, you probably don't need winter tires. the rest of the country if you have any sort of icy condition, you get snow, winter tires make a big difference. >> i saw you driving in the segment there on this ice rink. was it as dramatic as it looked? it was stunning the difference.

52 is the high wednesday and maybe showers and 48 on thanksgiving day. it will be chilly and the normal is 54. and 44 saturday, donning take it. >> a correction's officer was shot and killed in east baltimore. and andrea fujii has more. don, the police say that the officer knew her killer. the s.w.a.t. team surrounded the apartment of the veteran correction's officer after finding blood on her door. she was shot to death sunday morning inside of a friend's house. the police then went on to her apartment in north baltimore and searched for answers police say that the suspect is an associate, not an inmate. she lived with her boyfriend and 3-year-old daughter. don, back to you. thank you, and a teen who grew up here was found beaten to death in boston. last week, the 16-year-old disappeared in north carolina.
