news right now in east baltimore, sky chopper 13 over the scene of a serious crash impacting traffic. >> reporter: hello mary, we are at east mount and eager street where there's been a crash between two vehicles apparently a taxi cab and other car. you can see substantial damage to the one vehicle. at least one person has been injured here in transported to the hospital. baltimore police are connecting an investigation. looks like they have green mount closed at eager as they continue their investigation. some new details tonight in the murder of a maryland correctional officer. wjz learns police was called to the victim's apartment to stop a night. derek valcourt is live with the

story. >> reporter: police responded to the scene after police got a call of an ugly argument. less than 15 minutes later, she was dead. the murder of jones devastated neighbors. >> it was friday night, saturday morning around 4:00, 4:30 in the morning. >> reporter: melinda pinder lives next door. >> they came and talked to me, i sat over there with her for a little while. police left, once i left i came back in there with her. i said don't stay here. why don't you go to your mother's house. she said i'm not staying here, i'm going over to my friend's house. >> reporter: after a tense

three hour stand off, police realized the apartment was empty. grief counselors on hand today at the division of criminal services. meanwhile neighbors hope her killer is brought to justice. >> i just don't understand it because she was very nice and loved. >> reporter: police tell me they have not spoken with the victim's boyfriend yet. officially they will not say whether he is a suspect or even a person of interest they are looking for in the case. we are live in baltimore, derek valcourt. >> jones is the mother of a 3- year-old girl who is now staying with other family members. tonight a new look at the most dangerous cities in the united states. baltimore is on the list. in a survey compiled by cq

screening. but that can make long lines even longer. >> what i would hope that they would consider is the vast majority of people want to just get home to the holidays and spend time with their loved ones. >> reporter: the scan speed isn't its only advantage. >> the pat down is more invasive than just the screening. >> i was just mortified. my underwear was dropped to the floor. i was standing in my underwear and standing up. >> reporter: four out of five americans are okay with the screenings. >> it's unusual and weird. but we have to accept it. if we're going to fly safer. >> reporter: now about 20% of passengers will be asked to go

through that body scanner. the tsa assures the screener with the passenger never sees the picture and those looking at the scanner never sees the passenger. officials are asking fliers to take plenty of time this week. denise is in the newsroom with more in the search for a suspect. >> reporter: a woman was running about 7:00 at night as she ran through sheffield court, a man grabbed her, pulled her the ground and sexually assaulted her. the woman was able to fight off her attacker, she ran away. anyone with information about the attack is asked to contact police. denise, thank you. police say if you go running alone and a stranger makes you feel uncomfortable. turn around, call police and head toward a group of people or a home. bravery in baltimore. city police officers jump into action and save lives after a

devastating and strong tornado. adam may has details of special honor for the officers downtown, adam. >> reporter: a number of baltimore city police officers will be getting life saving awards for their valor. a few of them got a special thank you from the mayor and police commander. >> what just happened? we actually had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. >> reporter: four police officers honored. they were first on the scene after a tornado hit north baltimore in the middle of night ripping the roofer off of four apartment buildings. >> i was looking up and thought, there's no ceiling. i started looking with my flashlight and everything was on the floor. >> reporter: a man nearly

knocked unconscious, a woman buried under rubble and her mother bleeding on the ground. >> the woman had a large piece of concrete covering her, she was trapped, she couldn't move. she wasn't making any sounds either. i really feared the worse for her. but i was relieved after they pulled the concrete off of her and she was speaking. >> you could not be prouder of the way they performed that night. >> reporter: i spoke to one man who was rescued with the officer. he says he is extremely grateful -- and we spoke to a man that was taken to the hospital and he says he is

a huge crowd on the streets of baltimore tonight. a group is marching to protest project development. it's estimated that close to 1,000 people are participating in the march. nearly a year ago that we got the first of three blizzard's that hit the area. andria and era fujihi has the story. >> more snow than i've ever seen in the last 16 years on

the highway. >> reporter: and state department says no one could have been prepared for the amount. this year as snowplowers practiced, they are planning to coat the roads with more salt and molasses. they have 350 pieces of equipment and don't plan to acquire more. this year they've ordered more plows so that they don't have to wait for repairs. >> we have salt contracts already in place. a lot more preparation. >> reporter: preparing for the worse, but hoping for a little less white. andrea fujihi. >> if you would like to check

we had a foggy misty start to the day. but it cleared up and ever since, temperatures shot up to the 60s. take a look at where we got at vwi marshall. look at these temps, 65 degrees today. 47 the low. average is now 54 and 33. and the record 76 and 15 back in 1880. what a range here end of the night. 59 in d.c., still 57 ocean city. the due points are coming up a little bit. so there might be a little fog again tonight. don't think it'll be quite as

prevalent as it was this morning. we might see some changes late in the week. most of the activity passing well to the north. another little batch of showers beginning to show up. that one will move across ohio. i think tomorrow afternoon will be rather cloudy. just a chance of a few showers tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow night. once that front passes we will clear out and cool down for wednesday. but it'll be a nice travel day, most of the region, once this front moves through, a little bubble of high pressure, pretty much like southern portions of the carolinas. dry and cooler conditions, so very cool travel weather expected for wednesday. however by thursday, another front approaching, we'll bring us a chance of shower activity

facelift. today governor blake assigns a new plan to come up with money to fix up the schools. and it's not hard to see why this is a priority. >> reporter: the conditions jump right out at you. >> i think the city schools are very neglected. >> reporter: a school crossing sign is reflected on the old plexi dallas sign. and - - plexiglass sign. not much difference from the time levon and her husband were going to school. >> there was no heat. >> i was going into classrooms by 1:00 in the afternoon, i mean those kids were flopping on their desks. >> it's a mess, kids come and play on this, they'll be falling because of the condition. falling down, it's just -- >> kids spend more time out of school than they do in.

they really do. >> reporter: the conditions of the buildings are considered a reason for truancy and a deterrent to learning. >> you realize that our kids are learning in a dark environment. what does that mean? >> reporter: a task force will find ways to channel funds into school improvement. an estimated $2.8 million shortfall. >> what we're doing is taking a step toward improving our school system, system wide. >> reporter: an improvement into the charter introduced by jack young would allow the city to gain a revenue stream. reporting, i'm pat warren, now back to you on television hill. >> thank you, pat. the task force will make it's

recommendations by february 2011. and captain mike perry over an accident to bring us more. >> reporter: this at lynch and beltway. three vehicles involved. most serious injured is the rider of motorcycle. you see there the shattered motorcycle apparently had a collision with a gray sedan. knocked it into the path of a white pickup truck. we have one person going to shock trauma. that is the operator of the vehicle. as you can see, police do have lynch road closed at guyway in north point baltimore county. back to you. >> captain mike, thank you we'll continue to follow that as well. back in july we told you about the teenager who plunged 100 feet from a ride at a wisconsin park. vic is in the newsroom with the recovery of a very determined

young girl. >> reporter: it was a tragic mistake with serious consequences. the girl plummeted 10 stories before crashing into the ground. today tigan is unable to walk and can barely speak. her mother has high hopes for a full recovery. >> in the beginning, we were kinds of told, she's not guilty not going to walk again. i have so many plans for her. >> reporter: there is hope that she will one day walk again. mary, back to you. >> vic, thank you. the ride operator was charged with reckless injury and faces up to 25 years in prison. a horrifying end to a los angeles basketball game. police there are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy. he fell from a third level luxury box at saturday's laker's game. the child was reportedly taking pictures with his family when

he fell nearly 30 feet to the ground. he was taken to a near by hospital where he later died from head trauma. we could learn today if a jawbone found on the beach in aruba more than a week ago belonged to natalie holloway. kelly cobieba is in the aruban capital with more from wjz. >> reporter: the new evidence, a jawbone with an intact molar has been in the hands of investigators for almost a week. by comparing the bone with holloway's dental records, investigators will know if it's natalie. >> i believe at this, the results are in their hands. >> reporter: 18-year-old natalie disappeared during a class trip. her mother is desperately awaiting for answers. saying in a statement there is no good answer whether it is

natalie or whether it isn't. but no answer at all is most unbearable. holloway was last seen with van der sloot who was convicted twice but never charged. van der sloot is currently in a peruvian prison for the death of another girl in may. if the jawbone is tied to natalie holloway may lead to the conviction of van der sloot. >> the first thing investigators have to do is prove that natalie holloway is dead. 29 miners and emergency workers are rescued in china after being trapped in a pit for more than 24 hours. the miners were working under

ground at a coal mine when a flood strike. 14 managed to escape but 23 were trapped. a team of 20 rescues were then also trapped as they attempted a rescue mission. all were found alive and all are in good condition. such a different story in new zealand. that's where time is running out to save 29 miners. toxic and explosive gases are preventing teams from going in the mine. >> reporter: police are warning family members that the miners may not have survived. but they are keeping hope. >> just how long is it going to take to find out what's going on down there. >> as time develops you have to

understand that it's a case of putting in a mask and running in there. the risk is huge. >> reporter: area search teams are able to reach, though the air is too toxic to enter. rescuers have begun boring a 500-foot shaft to make contact with the men. >> we are going to get through this and do everything we can to get the men out alive. >> reporter: one of the trapped miners is 24-year-old malcolm campbell of scotland. his parents and residents in the small town of new zealand are trying to stay hopeful. >> the mood of the town is becoming pessimistic. and we need to be able to prepare for the worse. >> reporter: officials say a phone line deep inside the mine has rung unanswered for days. >> a total of 189 people have been killed in the country's minds in the last 114 years. time now for a quick look at some of the stories you will find in tomorrow morning's edition of the baltimore sun.

breaking news right now in northwest baltimore. scene of a crash, captain mike perry with more. >> this is right in front of the roisterstown road plaza. one of the drivers is trapped inside of the vehicle. they were able to pop the door lose but now that operator, or the person inside that vehicle is being removed by paramedics. it is affecting the racers town road. you see two lanes are blocked. one lane is getting by, expected delays in the area as

stunned by shasen's violent death. she was shot five times while driving through beverly hills tuesday. no shell casings were found on the scene. there are reports that shasen told friends she thought she was being followed as far back as march. >> there is some pressure to bring in the lapd into this investigation because the beverly hills police are not very experienced in solving homicides. >> reporter: investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from a movie premier attended by shasen the night before the shooting. >> we have sources telling us they are looking at ronny shasen's personal finances for potential irregular activity. >> reporter: those attending sunday's funeral don't believe shasen lived a secret life or

in health watch, a new federal report shows pulling medications off the shelves has cut hospital visits by 1/3. 11 -month-old dorinda campbell has a fever and cold. >> she has a lot of congestion, a cough and runny nose. >> reporter: she can use a fever reducer. but cough remedies were withdrawn from the market in 2007 after the fda warned they could cause serious harm or even death. since then, the number of young children going to the hospital for bad reactions to the drugs has been cut in half. so what are parents to do? tkr-rs doctors say it's important to
