deadly military confrontation. the flashpoint is an island occupied by the south. it's also claimed by the north near the country's western border. north korea fired dozens of artillery rounds. south korea fired back. south korean military says at least one south korean marine was killed and at least 13 others were wounded. a report from beijing. >> reporter: part of south korea's western island of yeonpyeong are in flames following the latest military clash between north and south korea. witnesses say north korea showered dozens of artillery rounds onto the island, which lies near disputed territory. south korea fired back, and the two sides exchanged fire for almost an hour, while the island's 1200 civilian residents took cover. this is the latest act of aggression by north korea which unveiled a new, modern nuclear facility to an american scientist earlier this month. in march the north is also believed to have launched a missile at a south korean warship, killing 46 on board. seoul now reports it's put its

military on the highest possible level of alert and worries of signs of more trouble to come. cbs news, beijing. >> later this morning, dutch officials are expected to release results of tests on a jaw bone found on a beach in aruba. the bone was found two weeks ago and may belong to missing american teen natalee holloway. dutch officials are comparing her dental records to the remains found in aruba. holloway was 18 years old when she disappeared during a graduation trip back in 2005. she was last seen with joran van der sloot. the 23-year-old dutchman arrested twice in connection with holloway's disappearance but never charged. van der sloot is currently awaiting trial in peru for the murder of 21-year-old stephanie floory. it's still unclear what caused a deadly human stampede in cambodia. the trouble started at the cambodian capital during a festival marking the end of the rainy season. thousands crowded a bridge and panicked. hundreds ended up being killed. manuel gallegus has our report. >> reporter: chaos on the streets of cambodia's capital

monday night. authorities say more than 330 people were killed, and almost as many were injured on the last day of a festival to celebrate the end of the rainy season. a 22-year-old victim said i was stuck in the crowd for a long time, and it was so hot i became unconscious. crowds were gathered on a small island in the river. a soft drink vendor says a handful of people passed out. that set off a panic in the crowd, which turned into a stampede. hundreds tried to escape over a bridge, crushing others along the way. most of the dead were either trampled to death or drowned after falling over the sides of the bridge, their shoes left behind. ambulances made repeat runs between the river and phnom penh's hospital. the main hospital was filled to capacity with bodies and injured patients. some victims had to be treated in hallways. back at the river, onlookers were stunned. one witness, who was shocked by the deaths, said nothing like

this has ever happened before. cambodia's prime minister has ordered an investigation into the stampede, calling it his country's biggest tragedy since the 1970s reign of terror by the khmer rouge. manuel gallegus, cbs news. meanwhile new zealand hope dimming for the 29 trapped coal miners. security video of friday's mine explosion was released this morning. nothing has been heard from the miners since the blast. rescue crews haven't been able to enter the mine because of toxic gas. in this country tomorrow is the busiest travel day of the year. the head of the transportation security administration is asking frustrated airline passengers for patience. he's urging them not to boycott the full body scanners. whit johnson is in washington with the latest. good morning to you. >> reporter: terrell, good morning. well, the online bloggers are threatening to jam up airport security this holiday travel season as a result tsa is almost begging the public for understanding. the tsa wants to make sure the busiest travel time of the year

is being done. >> reporter: homeland security secretary janet napolitano defended the stepped-up measures monday, along with several travelers. >> i like it. i figure i have nothing to hide. so i'd rather everybody be searched and everybody be safe. >> reporter: the tsa says about 1 million passengers have been patted down in the past month. and just a fraction of them, 700, have complained. less than 3% of airline passengers are actually patted down. the white house says it is taking traveler complaints into consideration throughout. >> whit johnson with our report from washington this morning. whit, good to see you, thanks. folks in southern wisconsin and northern illinois are cleaning up after a much different kind of turbulence. >> beth, it's a tornado. >> this is one of at least three tornadoes that touched down in northern illinois near rockford monday afternoon. a school bus was blown off the road injuring six middle school children. none were seriously hurt. at least two twisters touched

down in southern wisconsin. one trapped a woman in a barn. >> then i saw that tree go down, and then i knew my wife was in the barn so i kind of panicked. >> glass was breaking around me, and i didn't know what to do so i just ducked down and let it go through. >> several homes were destroyed. nearly 50,000 people lost power. on the "cbs moneywatch" this morning, stocks in asia were mostly lower. ashley morrison in new york with more. >> good morning, terrell. asian markets dropped amid worries about europe's financial stability. hong kong's hang seng finished down more than 2.5% while japan's nikkei was closed. today wall street gets the fed's latest measure of just how much the economy is growing as well as a new report on home sales. on monday, stocks finished mixed. the dow lost 25 points, while the nasdaq finished up almost 14. the fbi has raided the offices of three hedge funds as part of a major investigation into alleged insider trading. the three raids in new york city, connecticut, and boston took place on monday.

"the wall street journal" says the companies earned tens of millions of dollars in illegal profits using insider information concerning mergers. the government is concerned a full investigation into whether the 2005 honda accord hybrid is prone to unintended acceleration. that follows a deadly crash in 2005 in which the driver claims the vehicle lost braking power, then sped out of control. similar complaints led to the massive toyota recalls. nissan's new electric car, the leaf, debuts next month with a mileage rating you've never seen before. the epa says the vehicle will get the equivalent of 99 miles per gallon. the leaf doesn't even use gas but tests show it can travel 73 miles on a single charge. that translates into a cost of $561 a year in electricity. netflix is trying to move more customers on line. on monday the company announced it will offer streaming-only
